ITunes 9.2 - Genre Setting Bug

Has anyone worked a way to stop iTunes automatically choosing Genres for songs - when the chosen Genre contains a number in it's name ?
e.g. Rock 90's will set itself to Folk or Avantgarde .... ?
Only seems to be a bug with Genre's that contain numbers. VERY VERY Annoying when you use Genres extensively.....

Looks like iTunes 9.2 is reading the first few characters of the Genre and intrepreting it as one of the pre-defined genres used in the ID3v1 specification.
If you re-apply the desired genre it may stick. If not, then the problem might be that the file in question has both an ID3v1.x & ID3v2.x tag, which is allowed by the specfification, but not well supported by iTunes. I think that in some circumstances iTunes may update the v2.x tag, but then re-read the unedited v1.x information.
The workaround will be to Convert ID3-Tags > None two or three times, then Convert ID3-Tags > v2.3. Don't use v2.4, as as fara as I'm aware, this too seems to not be properly supported by iTunes.

  • ITunes automatically localizes genres?

I was using iTunes on a computer set to use English as the default language. I backed up the library, then moved it to my new computer. The new computer is set to use Finnish as the default language. So far, so good.
When I open iTunes, everything's still fine. However, as soon as it has a reason to touch a track, for example playing it, it automatically with no confirmation begins to translate the genre field, so for example "Celtic" becomes "Kelttimusiikki" and "Classical" becomes "Klassinen." This of course completely mucks up all smart playlists where it doesn't change the genres accordingly.
Any advice on how to deal with this? I really don't want iTunes to automatically muck with any of the information if I don't allow it to. If it insists on translating things, I'd rather it translate everything.

    I appreciate the help.
Unfortunately, turning of the "Kopio Tiedostot iTunes Media -kansioon" setting had no effect. Also turning off the keep folders organized setting "Pidä iTunes Media -kansio järjestettynä" makes no difference; iTunes still changes the genre.
As to changing the language, I'm afraid I'm failing to follow the instructions. The iTunes top menu bar does have a "Muokkaa" (Edit) option, but there is no "Asetukset" (Settings) in the menu. The only iTunes settings I can find are through the iTunes menu next to the apple at the top left, the command+comma ones (iTunes -> Asetukset...). I haven't been able to find any iTunes specific language settings, except for the playback language preference.
Looking at this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2242 it would appear that the Windows version has the language option, but you cannot control the MacOS iTunes language separely from the OS language.

Every time I start iTunes I get the message: "iTunes exec has been set to run in compatability mode for an older version of Windows. Turn off compatability mode for iTunes before you open it." How do I turn off the compatability mode? Particularly when I have to do it before I turn on iTunes.

Try the following document, only be sure that none of the boxes in the compatibility mode tab are checked (not just the compatibility mode box itself):

I started with one itunes account for my iphone and ipad, and now have a second ipad linked to the same itunes.  Can I set up a new itunes account for one ipad without losing what has already been downloaded on it?  I want to stop my husbands downloads appearing on my ipad, and vice versa.

A much simpler solution would be to go into Settings > Store and turn off Automatic Downloads

  • ITunes wants me to set up iPod Touch again or restore it or eject it???

I bought this iPod Touch only two months ago. And since this is my second iPod (the first was a 5 gen that I had had for a couple years), I only did the initial iTunes 8 update I had to do when I bought it. Since it had been working fine, I didn't do any subsequent update(s). My motto is if it ain't broke...Anyhow, I don't normally do updates unless there is a really big gain I want. However, as of yesterday whenever I tried to sync it, iTunes wanted me to set up my iPod touch as a new iPod or restore it. Although it recognized the iPod's name, it wouldn't list any of the other information on it (playlists, etc.). The only other option I had was to eject it. I didn't understand why with no changes to my iPod or iTunes I would have to set it up again or restore it all of a sudden. When I called apple support, I was told that, "there was a problem that has been fixed and now in order for it to stay fixed, you have to restore it one more time." The lady that told me this got this from a product specialist. So I asked her what was the problem? Was it with iTunes or my iPod? How did it get fixed? She couldn't answer these questions but said that something kept updating and since it has been fixed but sees certain issues on the iPod, it wants to restore it so I had no choice but to restore it. Okay. I never updated iTunes 8 since the first time I downloaded it in September. So, why is it updating itself anyway??? Or is it something else that is updating itself? What's updating when I haven't done anything at all? I don't get it. I asked her if I could speak to the specialist myself because I'd like to be able prevent this from happening again (and to just have a basic understanding of what happened). She said I could and put me on hold and nobody ever picked up. I called back and a very nice guy answered that said that these things just happen sometimes (like once a year). I'm not really angry with them. They didn't make the things. I just want to know why it happened. Does anyone out there have an explanation? Have you had this experience?
Sorry. I'm just realizing this is in the wrong area. I don't post that often....I'll try to get an answer elsewhere.

    Welcome to the discussions,
are you using the same iTunes account? If no, did you authorize iTunes with his account info again before you connected his phone?
To keep your accounts separate on one PC, create a new windows user, log in, disable autosync in iTunes, set up the second account and back up manually by right clicking on the device in the device list and choosing "backup". This will save data, pictures taken with the phone and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer. Music, unless bought in iTunes and transferred with your purchases, is not part of the backup. But you can share music between different accounts on one computer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your phone got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.

Then i try and plug it into my pc with iTunes on (i've set it to do not automatically sync devices) but it still freezes every time. the only way to unfreeze it is by detatching the ipod or resetting with menu/centre (until it loads up again, where it immediately unfreezes and comes up with a load of messages saying "cannot read iPod" and when i try and restore it by pressing menu/centre button while it's plugged in, it says "cannot restore as it is being used by another program" or "error 1415". • I have a new 160GB iPod Classic. I often listen to it for many hours at a time. Even with Itunes and the Classic set on shuffle it repeats songs often and only plays a small fraction of my songs. Help!            of my

When listening for hours to my new Clasic 160 with several thousand songs and both itunes and the Classic set to shuffle all songs it only plays a small fraction of my library and plays many songs several times over that period. It also seems to pick a small different group of songs to repeat without touching many of most of my songs each time I start listening. Over 98% of the music is legally owned in my CD collection. A few are down loads which play! There should be no issues with ownership. Please help. As much as I like all my tunes I want to actually hear them all. There are many many albums that have never been played.

Okay, well we've eliminated a couple of things.
One thing I have noticed about the iPod Classic: I suspect that "shuffle" is actually a Playlist, not a real shuffle. The Classic is not as powerful as iTunes or a desktop/computer, so it cannot truely "shuffle songs". I suspect what happens is that every Sync of the Classic with its iTunes Library causes a revised "shuffle playlist" to be put on the iPod and then, when you choose Shuffle play, it actually uses that special hidden "shuffle playlist".
So one trick is to Sync your iPod with iTunes frequently. This would change the "shuffle playlist". Another trick would be to create your own Playlists, either by adding what you want to a Regular Playlist or by creating a Smart Playlist which adds and removes songs by itself.
Smart Playlists: for example, you can create a Smart Playlist (in iTunes) which contains a random selection of all songs, or a random selection of a particular group of songs, provided the song has not been played for a period of time, say six months, or 300 days. Every Sync of the iPod with iTunes would remove any song from that Smart Playlist if it has been played. That same song cannot go back into the Playlist for a period of six months, or whatever you choose.
This way, you can reduce the likelyhood of hearing the same songs too often. This brings me to another point. If you have the same song, on different albums, then it's possible that you are hearing that same song but from both albums.
Try this: in your iTunes Library,
look for and click on the big + button and choose New Smart Playlist..., if you do not have the Sidebar displayed, switch to the Playlists view where you will find it in the bottom left corner,
Set it up to look like this:
It creates a list of songs that have not been played for fifteen weeks. It excludes videos and in my iTunes Library, it has 527 songs in it. If you would like a smaller list than that, click on the Limit to and fill in the number of songs you want.
Having set it up, play some songs from it (in shuffle mode if you wish) and watch how it changes . The song must play through to the end of the track before it is classed as "played". If you like it, let it go onto your iPod. You could set up a few Playlists, each with their own rules. Even if a song appears in two different Smart Playlists, if you have the "last played is not in the last" rule in both lists, then playing the song will eliminate it from both lists. None of this removes songs from the iPod (unless you use Sync selected Playlists...).

I have double and triples of photo's on my iPad. Not all my pics but most of them. I was told that I screwed up in synching with iTunes when I initally set up. How in the **** do I get rid of all the dups? I cannot delete them from my iPad. HELP ME!

If the shows are in fact still on the pad, they will be found in the videos app, not the music or I tunes app.  Look there and see if they are still there.
If you don't see them there, go to the searchlight screen ( farthest left home page) and type in the name of one of the shows.  If it is on the pad, hiding somewhere, this will find it.
If they are not there, they should not be using up space.
To get them back onto your pad, plug in and sync again.  Make sure you transfer purchases first.   Before you sync, take a look at the video tab in your I tunes, and check what you want and don't want synced.
