ITunes 9 can no longer encode '24bit 96khz wav' to 'iTunes plus aac'

In iTunes 8.2.1, on a G5 PPC running Leopard, if I try to convert a '24bit 96khz wav' file to 'iTunes plus aac' via iTunes, everything works fine.
However, I cannot convert this same file using iTunes 9. It gives me an error saying something like 'file cannot be converted using current iTunes encoding and bit rate'. I tried a bunch of other iTunes encoding settings to see if I could encode the file with any others, and I couldn't get any to work.
I then downgraded back to iTunes 8.2.1, and I could then encode the file as aac.
Is this a bug, or did we lose a really cool iTunes feature when transitioning from 8.2.1 to 9?
Thanks,
-Clayton

I got tired of waiting for Apple to provide support for this in iTunes 9, like they previously had in iTunes 8, so I gave up on waiting.
I'm using Sample Manager and a bit of AppleScripting to pre-process my upsampled audio, and get it down to 16/44.1 wav, before asking iTunes to convert it to AAC and add it to my library.
Not so happy with Apple on this one... but I get it, I'm in a small demographic... people that have upsampled audio that want an AAC copy in their iTunes library... so I'm OK with it...
I just wish that someone from Apple would have at least acknowledged this post, and admitted that they dropped support for this when moving to 9, and that they have no intention of supporting it at the current moment...

  • I can no longer encode a sequence in PP CC after the Dec 2013 update

II have had to shut down and restart PP CC about 5 times when just creating a very simple sequence of clips from a family get together for Thanskgiving.  I had to shut down since everything just quite responding.  Fortunately, when I reopened the project, I could resume.   I finally got my sequence created, but, now I can't export the sequence.  The encode has failed 8 times in a row.  I've tried direct export, and exporting to the AME queue.  Sometimes I get the error sound and the absolutely useless error message "Error compiling movie.  Unknown Error." Other times it just stops making any progress in the encode with no message at all, but there are zero CPU cycles being consumed by PP or AME.  It just plain stops, wiht no eror message.  That happened 3 times when used the Media Queue approach, and in the preview window in AME, it just stopped encoding at very different places in the sequence.
It appears as though I can no longer encode a movie.  And I'm paying big bucks for this every month?  What a sap.
I'm glad I'm not a Pro, whose income and life depends on these tools!  But, I have a full time job, and only a very small amount of free time.  I do not want to spend my small amount of free time as an Adobe Beta Tester.  I've been using Adobe tools for years, which is why I signed up for CC, but...at this point: I can't even encode a simple sequence!
I can't express my disappointment.  I wanted to be loading the encoded MP4 onto VIMEO for my friends and family to see by now, but.....I can't even encode a very simple sequence.  And, I not a newbie.  I have hundreds of videos on VIMEO, and many more on Youtube and Smugmug.  Every one was produced with Adobe PP (from v4 on).
But now:  I'm dead in the water.
I gurantee you that i will not 're-up' when my CC subscription expires, and, I guess right now, I have to start from scratch with my raw clips and find some other tools to use?  I wish all my expensive plug-ins (like MB Suite) would work in whatever the tools I will move to...but...I guess I'll just have to write them off as a loss, just like the next 8 months of paying for my Adobe CC Software that no longer works.
I wish there was a way I could take the Thanksgiving Project and its sequences I've created in PP CC and convert the Project to PP 6.0, since I never had  any issues with it PP v6.0.
But, from what I understand, if you make a project in PP CC, you are lost.  You can't go backwards.
And, you know what?  I'm done.  I quit.  I won't even try starting over in PP 6.0.  I'm going to find some other tools.  I know they won;t be as full-featured as Adobe's, but...I'm not a pro.  I just need something that works reliably.
    Disgusted beyond words.

PS:  So, does Adobe have any kind of disaster recovery plan when an update like this fails?  Can you please send out a "new update" that rolls me back to the prior version on PP CC?

OK.  I have successfully encoded this very simple sequence, but, I *can't* get it to encode using my "standard" custom H.264 preset that I have been using for years.
But, I was not able to encode in many plain vanilla codecs either, but, I got a notice that there was a CC update for AE, so I took the time to install those updates, and, as I always do, I re-booted after the update of AE.
But, of course I had re-booted a couple times last night when I couldn't get the sequence to encode.  That's somethinf I always try b4 writing to a form.
So, here's the sequecne of events this morning:
    1)  Try to encode sequecne to uncompressed AVI (Cineform AVI 1920x1080).  It SUCCEEDED.  But, even though the AVI was large > 3.6 GB the quality was horrible, I did not pay much attention to the quality settings.
    2)  Try to encode to Quicktime H.264 codec.  FAILED.
    3)  Try to encode to Quicktime Codec=Uncompressed 4:2:2.  FAILED
    4)  CC UPdate notice for AE CC and AE 6.0
    5)  Perform update
    6)  Reboot
    7)  Try to encode to Quicktime Codec=Uncompressed 4:2:2.  SUCCEEDED - but ENORMOUS FILE SIZE *very nice quality though*  :-)
    8)  Try to encode to Quicktime Codec=H.264.  SUCCEEDED.
    9)  Try to encode to my 'usual' H.264 Preset FAILED, just hung up during the 2nd of two passes.  My preset is a VBR with 2 passes, see bitmap below. In this particular case it got 'hung' at this frame.  But, It never 'hangs' in the same place?
So, I don't know why I was able to encode the sequence using the Quicktime Wrapper and botn Uncompressed and H2.264 Codecs after updating AE CC and rebooting, but not before.  Surely there is no interaction between AE and AME?
But, the re-boot should not have caused it alone, since I had rebooted several times last night, and I've installed nothing but the new update for AE since last night?
So, I guess I'm OK now.  Please excuse my tone last night, I was very frustrtated.
It is interesting that I still can't encode this particluar sequence using my "standard" H.264 preset.
And, BTW Jim:  What I mentioned in my previus post was not that I had brought and old PP 6.0 sequecne into CC and encoded it successfully, but that I just re-encoded one of my most complex sequences AGAIN in PP 6.0, just to wanted to make sure nothing was haywire with "good old" PP 6.0.
But, I did just re-encode a sequence from PP CC from before the Dec 13 update using my "standard" H.264 preset, and...yes...it DID encode.
SOOOOO...Jim, you were correct.  My inability to encode was not due to the DEC 13 PP CC update, but something very peculiar about this one sequence.  But, it is a very simple sequence.  The only effects applied is some light color grading using MB Colorista, and Warp Stabilizer to a stabilize a few hand held shots.  No other effects.  And...the encode that fails using my standard preset, never fails at the same frame.
But...at this point I'm OK.  Instead of an encoded file in MP4 I have an ecnoded H.264 rendition in the QuickTime MOV wrapper.  At least I've got that sequence done and can move on to the ton of others I need to get to (without having to learn an entirely new tool).  :-)

  • Can no longer burn 24bit SD2 songs in iTunes 5

I used to be able to burn 24 bit audio files (particularly Sound Designer II (SD2) files in iTunes -- but in version 5 this seems to be no longer possible, though I can still play back these 24 bit sd2 audio files. Is there either a way to get iTunes 5 to burn these files to audio CDs, or else to downgrade back to iTunes 4.9, which worked just fine?
    Cheers,
    Matthew.

Itunes 5 won't play SDII. If only I could downgrade back to 4.9 ! As far as I know, it's impossible without reinstalling the whole operating system from scratch.
I can't believe SDII and 24 bit files are no longer supported, why remove the feature? It had to be a deliberate decision, right? some upgrade. I don't even own Jam anymore, itunes had removed my need for it. Apple giveth, Apple taketh away.
The other deplorable thing here is the complete lack of any avenue to communicate with Apple on this or any topic. I haven't seen one customer feedback option on any of these support pages. This is really bad, the company doesn't care at all.

  • 24bit/96kHz Support?

Does the iPhone support 24bit/96kHz encoded songs? I have some really great sounding jazz records that are encoded in this format but every time I try to transfer the song over, it gives me an error that says that the iPhone doesn't support it. I do not wish to convert it to another format for that will degrade the sound quality and possibly the bit depth.
    Any ideas for work arounds?

Since discovering 24bit music a few months ago I've been experimenting a bit, including iPod playback. I've stumbled on this thread, and here are some thoughts:
Can an iPod play 24bit FLACs? --no, but my 2nd generation iPod Touch can play 24bit Apple Lossless files. If you have FLAC files, you can convert them using a really nice utility called X Lossless Decoder (XLD) which makes bit perfect conversions from FLAC to Apple Lossless and back again. You can download from here --> http://tmkk.hp.infoseek.co.jp/xld/index_e.html
Can an iPod play 24bit/96KHz Apple Lossless file? --no, apparently not (at least mine can't) which is something I discovered by accident. It turns out my first 24bit music had a sampling rate of 48KHz, so my iPod swallowed it and played it no problem. Then I got hold of a 24bit/96KHz file and was surprised when iTunes told me that my iPod couldn't play this type of file. The answer is to use XLD to down-sample the 96KHz file to a 48KHz file, and use that copy on your iPod. The full fat 96KHz files play fine in iTunes on your Mac, though, so don't discard them.
Why do I downsample to 48KHz and not 44.1? -- think about it: 48 is half of 96, and 44.1 is not. Half the sampling rate means that (thinking about it in movie terms) every other frame is used without any interpolation (and therefore further degredation) of the original. I have seen 24bit/88.2KHz studio master files for sale on some audiophile websites. I haven't tried one yet, so I don't know if these work on an iPod without down-sampling, but again, the answer for me will be to down-sample to 44.1KHz and not 48KHz.
Does it sound better? --oh yes! The first bit of 24bit music I got was a free download 24bit version of a CD I bought. Naturally the first thing I did was to listen to the same bits of music back to back in both losslessly ripped CD (16bit/44.1KHz) and 24bit/48KHz and the difference is astonishing. The first impression is that the 24bit version is less bright than the 16bit version, but very quickly I realised that was because the music had lost that hard digital edge I'd got used to after years of ignoring vinyl for the convenience of CDs. Then I started to notice the extra detail. In one bit of music, the CD version had a vague background huffing noise I couldn't identify except to say it was a bit of studio background noise. On the 24bit version it's unmistakably the depress-release of a piano's sustain pedal. All kinds of detail in the music has become apparent sicne then.
OK, so does it sound better on an iPod? --absolutely! 24 bit sound is vastly better than anything you've heard on an iPod but you've got to upgrade your iPod a little. The player itself is really very good and worth every penny and then some. The negative value left over is in those tinny little headphones Apple insist on supplying, which for years, and through various generations of iPod/Phone I've owned have gone in the bin without even being unwrapped. Hateful things they are -- just get rid of them! Right now I use Shure SE-530 in-ear headphones, which were very good anyway, but since my discovery of 24bit music have really come into their own. These are expensive though, at roughly twice the price of your average iPod, but there are definitely cheaper alternatives that will massively improve your listening experience. The key is to isolate as much noise as possible (isolate, not "noise-cancel" which in my experience doesn anything but that) so if you don't like stuff shoved into your ear canal, a decent quality chunky pair of retro style big ear pad headphones would serve you well I reckon.
What else have I tried? --well, I've discovered that 24bit files made from vinyl originals sould a lot like vinyl originals in both good and bad ways. The characteristic vinyl rumble and crackle is faithfully preserved in 24bit/96KHz form... Secondly, 24bit files ripped from a digital source such as SACD or DVD-A sound amazing. Thirdly, AAC (which is NOT AT ALL LOSSLESS) is far worse than a losslessly ripped CD, so STOP PAYING APPLE FULL PRICE FOR A LOSSY FILE IN THE iTUNES STORE. Whilst I love Apple, this is one area where they are pulling a fast one on all of us. Tell them it's unacceptable, and go back to buying CDs from Amazon until they at least give us the option to buy lossless versions of the music. Finally, MP3 files (God help your ears if you still have some of those) are vastly worse even than AAC files. Lossy compression is bad, and old style lossy compression is the worst of all.
What do I still want to know? --lots of stuff generally, but in relation to this, here are a some questions that still bug me:
    * why don't record companies make 24bit music more widely available? Why are we confined to very obscure music offered only on specialist audiophile websites? SACDs and DVD-As are out there, and most self-respecting recording studios these days oftem make 24bit/192KHz masters. Why make the best thing generally available for us to listen to down-sampled and degraded 16bit/44.1KHz versions on a more than 3-decade old physical format? (Answers to this question that involve the word "copyright" will be redirected to /dev/null by the way, on the grounds that they are very boring indeed)
    * what is the highest spec Apple Lossless file that an iPod will play? So far I know only that 24bit/44.1KHz and 24bit/48KHz work, and one of these days when I have time, I'll down-sample a 24bit/96KHz file to 24bit/72KHz and 24bit/88.2KHz and see where iTunes stops uploading it to my iPod. If and when I know, I'll let you know.
    * why don't Apple publish a proper specification of what kind of Apple Lossless file any given iPod model will play? The second I see "Apple Lossless up to 24bit/96KHz" or better I'll upgrade -- Apple, that's a promise.

  • Can Itunes Import & play 24bit 96khz music files?

Hi there if i imported some 24bit 96khz music files into Itunes will the files remain this format or will Itunes compress them?
Also is my Ipad/Iphone able to play 24bit 96khz files or not?

With the Apple Lightning CCK and iPhone 5 /IOS6 it seems to be okay to play flac format with soft Ampliflac.
However with IOS7 Apple has blocked the way ! it's terrible, Apple Lightning CCK doesn't work, see

Regarding iTunes, it can play your slamping, in case you put the setting in the right one
I can't understand Apple that block these right slampings under powerful devices like 5S... I know they can't sell very heavy files in density buisness but it's always nice to be free to play what we naturaly like !

  • I bought a Sandisk Connect Media Drive, downloaded the app from iTunes.  Before iOS 8, movies played fine.  After iOS upgrade I can no longer play movies downloaded from iTunes to the media drive.  Anyone else have a similar issue?

I bought a Sandisk Connect Media Drive, downloaded the app from iTunes.  Before iOS 8, movies played fine.  After iOS upgrade I can no longer play movies downloaded from iTunes to the media drive.  Anyone else have a similar issue?

I checked with SanDisk's own online support and they indicate that they have notified Apple of the issue.
According to SanDisk, the problem lies with Apple not having the iOS 8 version of the Safari browser having DRM decoding enabled that the Media Drive relies upon to decode and play iTunes DRM titles. Non DRM encoded videos will play in the browser.
DRM audio is not effected as this is handled by the native iOS music app.
As of the date of this post SanDisk have not been given a timeframe by Apple for this issue to be resolved.
I hope that Apple resolves this issue quickly as I have a large collection of DRM video titles on a 128Mb memory card installed in the Media Drive that I am unable to view.

  • ITunes + Vista = my computer can no longer see my DVDrw drive...

I just downloaded iTunes 7.6.2.9 onto my Dell Inspiron E1705 - and when I restart my computer, the computer can no longer see my Optical drive (DVDrw). I contacted Dell support, and they changed something in the regedit limits or something(I'm not a techy lol), and my optical drive was back.
But the next day when I opened iTunes I got a message that says:
"Warning! The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
    So I reinstalled iTunes.
I restarted my computer, and it could no longer see my optical drive AGAIN. My DVDrw drive gets an error that says "This device cannot start (Code 10)." When I check for solutions it says "Could not load driver software."
I go back to Dell support and tell them my optical drive isn't working. They do the exact same thing to fix it (deleting some limit with regedit) and it works. I open iTunes, and I get the iTunes Warning (Setup Assistant Error).
I asked the Dell tech what the deal was, and he said iTunes isn't compatible at all with Vista.
But according to Mac's website it is...
    Anyone know what's going on?!?!

I am having the exact same behavior as xhollysue!
    It goes like this:
    1. Install ITunes, lose optical disk drives hardware (they don't even show up in Windows Explorer).
    2. Use RegEdit to disable Upper Filters at HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}, optical drive hardware re-appears.
    3. iTunes requires a re-install to permit CD burning, and your back to square one.
I got the above fix NOT from a Dell technician, but, instead, from a Microsoft technician, which cost me $70.
I would strongly urge Apple to research this issue and come up with a more reasonable workaround since (1) the iPhone is being adopted by many traditional MS users and the use of iTunes is an integral part of the iPhone technology architecture; (2) iPhone 3G is just now shipping and will bring even more into the Apple camp; and (3) iTunes is clearly a better media player.
Come on Apple. Let's get some enthusiam and take advantage of this opportunity!

  • ITunes 11: In the store, I can no longer sort by name/artist/album

I can no longer sort by name or artist or album when I'm in the store with iTunes 11.  Yes, I discovered the View Options in the Menu Bar. By when I select it nothing opens. Same for Command-J. It doesn't do anything either. I've tried hitting Command-J repeatedly, but nothing.
The fact is, it seems utterly stupid to have this work differently than when you're in your library---by simply hitting name/artist or album in the bar at the top of the list. Having to sort lists in the Store via a completely different method than the lists in one's library is totally counter-intuitive.
But back to my problem:  The View Options won't open for me. Anybody know how to fix this?
I've got a lot of music I wish to buy, but I need different methods of sorting, otherwise it'll be a nightmare trying to keep track of things.

  • Can no longer see iPhone in iTunes on Mac at home

I wonder if you can help? We have 2 iPhones & a Nano all connected to iMac at home & to date syncing happily. I have recently downloaded iTunes to windows PC at work so I can sync iPhone calender with work Outlook calendar. I have managed this successfully syncing my phone at both home & work. This week however my work PC seemed to be having probs seeing my phone. I eventually got them "talking" but during the process the work PC had a pop up saying something about not having the apps in iTunes and did I want them copied. I was given two options, one to transfer & the other not to transfer however it said if I did not transfer the apps would be deleted from my phone(!) I therefore chose the transfer option but it started deleting apps during the sync process anyway. I immediately unplugged the phone but since then I can no longer even see my iPhone in iTunes on my home based iMac (where the back up is!). I have followed the help suggestions (reboot iMac, phone etc) but with no luck. Apologies if this is unclear, I am a bit technically challenged and so really have no idea what I have done/am doing. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks in anticipation.

Thanks a lot!  After I sent the above post, I tried that.  It worked a little.  Some of the ones that I Purchased would not come up.  I followed instructions from Apple about going to Purchased and downloading them again, but ran into another problem.  They are greyed on my Mac and they will not download again.  It says to click on the iCloud beside them, but there is not one visible.  iCloud is set up, at least I thought it was.  I am sure there is a simple explanation, but I am missing it!

My ITunes gift card I brought, the Reemdem code had bin wide out so I can no longer see that code what do I do?

    "bin wide out"?
If you mean you cannot read the code on the back of the card take it back to the store you purchased it from. If the numbers are not visable because you scratched them out I don't know if the store will replace or refund that. If you can read some of the numbers you could just keep trying a combination of letters and numbers to replace the missing ones. This will take a while depending on how many inputs are missing. You will have to use 0 through 9 and I am guessing A through Z.

I've updated to the most recent version of iTunes and I can no longer see any of my old music on my mac.  All the music is still available on my ipad.  How can i download the music on my mac?

First, are you positive it is really not there?  Have you looked in your iTunes folder in your Music folder, and in the media folders there? Do you see your media files?
If your media are gone it is a lot easier to restore from a proper computer backup.  Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
