ITunes 9 Dumps music library when exiting the program
I would sure appreciate any help that you all might be able to throw my way. Upgraded to iTunes 9 a couple of months ago. Basically from the time it was installed I have had the problem that I must Manually click FILE and Add Folder to Library. Upon exiting the program it will then basically dump the whole library and the next time I open iTunes I have to Add Folders to Library Again. After the upgrade to 9 I didn't even try syn'in my Nano because I was afraid I might loose music so I just left it alone and kept fiddling trying to figure out why the library would dissapear upon exiting the program.
Just after Christmas I got a 16GB Touch so figured I really need to get the figured out..... and I'm still trying. Before connecting the Touch for the first time I COMPLETELY uninstalled iTunes, Quicktime, Apple Software UPdater, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour,etc. After this, I found i still had an itunes folder in my Music folder so I deleted that (I pulled purchased music files into a seperate folder on my desktop just in case). I reinstalled itunes 9, went to File and then Add Folder to Library and imported everything. I wanted to get up and running with the Touch so I made a couple small playlists and called it a day. Exited the program, then re-opened it just to check if it was still there and it was! I was excited..... but not for long. Next day opened iTunes 9 and there was no music, the library was empty.
I could go on and on... but won't. I've read posts about checking the XML file in wordpad, which I've done and seems like it's correct. even when I go to Preferences/Advanced, and look at where it's storing it seems correct.
Can some one point me where to look?????

Thank you so much for your reply Katrina. Interesting stuff. Somehow in the mega searches I was doing for answers I didn't think to search using the Vaio angle. I will definitely go through those Vaio Files. This is my 4th Vaio and I NEVER seem to use any of the preloaded software, but to this point have not had problems until I installed iTunes 9.
Last night I read another post that reminded me that the music files that show up in the iTunes/music folder are just "pointers" or say "shortcuts" (I can't remember the actual term used) to where the ACTUAL music files are located. When I used the Add Folders from the file menu I've always assumed that these "shortcuts" have been placed in the iTunes/Music folder properly. But just in case, I clicked on the Copy Files to iTunes Media folder in Advanced tab to be safe and then I did the Drag/Drop from my windows MY MUSIC folder (rather than using the Add Folders to Library in iTunes). I started by dragging and dropping like 5 albums. Then I'd close, open, close, open etc. to see if they would stay in my iTunes music library.... and they DID! So I left it overnight and then this morning I dragged a bunch more albums into my iTunes music library. Did another close, open, close, open on iTunes and so far everything is staying in place. My next test is going to be to completely shut down my Vaio and start it back up and see if it's all still there.
Do you think any of this makes sense, or relates back to the Vaio software issues from the post you provided? I don't quite understand why it would work to drag/drop but not simply click Add Folders to Library???

IPod Touch dumps music library when I download content from mobile iTunes
I have had this problem twice now, and both times when I'm away from home and can't get to my computer to sync up easily and fix the problem.
- I am downloading podcasts from the mobile version of iTunes using the Touch's built in wifi
- I open the "Music" app to listen to my tasty new podcasts
- The splash screen that says iTunes is updating the library - this may take a few minutes - appears
- soon, presta! I have none of my original music available, just the crappy single of the week I got for free from iTunes. I begin to hate this undiscovered band for seemingly poor reasons.
now, every time I go back to my computer at home to sync it up, it restores the playlists and content I thought I had lost, so my best guess is that mobile iTunes is screwing with my iPod Touch's music library file, because for all I can tell the files still seem to be there. Just un-findable.
I'm not jailbroken, and don't fancy it, unless someone thinks it might help me get my music and podcasts back before I can return home... a week is a long time to go without my stuff.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated! thanks,
BrockI have the same problem with mine, but i dont really pay attention to when ive bought songs of mobile itunes. Sometimes when i turn my ipod on its says updating library but then states no content, so i have to go to the computer to re-sync my songs. Ive looked all over but cant find any answers to stop this, have you had any luck yet?

I have subscribed to iTunes Match and have employed it to listen to music on my Macbook Air and iMac. On these devices it seems to operate by streaming music to the device rather than deleting the device's current iTunes library and downloading songs as they are played from iTunes Match. Not so on the iPhone as far as I can tell. Consequently, to date I have not activated iTunes Match on my iPhone 4S. I presently have 40-50GB's of music on my iPhone, sync'd from my iTunes music library on my Macbook Air. I am concerned that if I enable iTunes Match on my iPhone I will lose the music library already on my iPhone, as Apple seems to be representing that once iTunes Match is enabled on the iPhone the current music library, carefully compiled, will be gone from the iPhone forever (unless I later re-sync it from the iTunes library on my laptop), that it will be deleted. Although this would free up a lot of space on my iPhone, I bought the 64GB phone just so that I could keep a lot of music on it and accessible at all times. I am concerned that in certain instances, say if I am in the subway and want to listen to music on my iPhone but don't have internet access below ground, that I won't have much music to listen to, only those songs previously played and thus downloaded onto the phone from iMatch, presenting me witrh a rather limited choice of music to play instead of the 40-50GB's I now have to choose from. Apple seems to have presented me with the choice of the lesser of 2 evils: i) enable iTunes Match and lose the music library already on the iPhone in exchange for access to iTunes Match and a greater number of songs than I can fit onto the phone (my library exceeds the phone's capacity) when a Cloud connection is available or ii) don't enable iTunes match and limit myself to only those songs, a considerable portion of my library to be sure but not all of it, that I can fit in the phone's storage space, i.e., the 40-50 GB's I have on there now. If I choose the latter course, each time I purchase an album I'll have to delete another album to make room for it on the phone. Apple thus offers me a sort of Hobson's choice, bad all the way around. Do I have this right? The Apple techs I've spoken to don't seem to have a handle on the "deletion" aspect of enabling iTunes Match on the iPhone. Right now, I'm too scared of "losing" my iPhone music library to enable iTunes Match on the iPhone. [Possible work-around, albeit a pain in the ***: I suppose that I can enable iTunes Match on the iPhone and spend the next couple of weeks 24/7 downloading songs from my iTunes Match library back onto the phone to replace at least some of those deleted when Match was enabled, thereby rebuilding a proxy library on the phone itself to play when I'm stuck in a tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan while maintaining access to thee larger iTunes Match library, more music than my phone will hold, once we come back into the light and my Cloud connection is restored.] Comments, suggestions will be appreciated. I have tried several ways to transfer my itunes library and Playlists to a new computer. I get the music library but not the playlists. Can you advise?
2nd > I purchased 21 new tunes yesterday on the new computer> worked great> but when I made a disc to transfer the playlist. I get the music but no album info just 1,2,3,etc. So I have signup both computers to share thinking that would work. But no to that also.

I have a few thousand songs in my itunes music library, when i connect my ipad that has only 50 songs on it will it overwrite the songs in my itunes library
I had previously syncd the ipad and the songs on it, then loaded songs from an old ipod into the itunes account (using irip) and now the ipad songs that were in the itunes account are gone. Can I change the auto sync settings before reconnecting the ipad again as to not lose the songs from my old ipod.

Working on an IMac - with IPhoto v.9.6
This is my first experience with IPhoto... trying to move files from a PC over to a Mac.
I don't have a ton of photos but I created about 6 albums - standard albums - and dragged and dropped individual photos into each of the albums. I named each of the albums as well so I would know what was in each. After i was finished, I created a folder called 2014 and moved each of the albums into that folder. Before moving ANY of the albums, I opened each of them up to make sure that all the photos I wanted in each were indeed there - and since there were some errors on my part, I deleted any duplicates first. SO, I KNOW the photos were actually in each of the albums BEFORE i moved them into the 2014 folder.
My intention was to then delete the photo files in my document file but once I got there I thought I would go back and double check the IPhoto file just to make sure... and the pictures were NOT in the albums where I had placed them... is there a need to save this before you move on and if so, to where and how? I was under the impression that once files were moved to albums, they remain there.
The photos are still in the photo library but unsorted now again... I cannot even open the 2014 folder at this point.
Thanks for any help!!Was back on IPhoto this morning. The folder did not open at all so I deleted it. Beside Albums, nothing showed at all. It was like I had done no work at all except to import my photo folder. Nothing was in my trash bin either.
I started again and created one album at a time. I dragged and dropped photos into the album and exited out of IPhoto, opened up other programs and then returned to IPhoto to see if the album was still there and it was this time. I created a second album and did the same thing. This time, for some reason, the albums seem to be staying in place. I am not doing anything differently than last time. After creating three albums, I created a folder called 2014 and dragged and dropped the three albums into the folder and exited IPhoto. They were still there when I returned - YEAH! It seems to be working - for now! I am keeping my fingers crossed that my photos are not going to disappear but I am not going to delete my photo folder from my files just in case!
Thanks for the suggestions but this may just have been a funny glitch... not sure what happened. I didn't change anything or do anything differently this time except that I am doing it one album at a time and exiting the program between creating each of them and coming back to check... very strange. -
Hi, I lost my entire music library when my hard drive crashed 2 wks ago. It's all on my iPod, though..but the songlist appears gray. I just cannot figure out how to download my iPod music list BACK into my iTunes library. All they seems to address is Library -> iPod transfers. I'm not an iT geek.. Help meeee!

Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

I have totally "uninstalled" what I had and then reinstalled the newest
version of itunes. Still......
First, when I click on the itunes icon to load it takes the program anywhere
from two to three minutes to load. None of my other programs take this
long.
When in the itunes program I can be moving around in my library and itunes
when choosing a song or songs, choosing file, edit, etc,. whatever command I
choose it just suddenly stops. I can issue five commands and watch each one
respond in 30 second to two minute intervals. I can issue several commands,
even shutting down, and it will do all but takes several minutes to do so.
My itunes program was working fine when this problem suddenly arose.
TerryClick here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

From the 'File' menu, select 'Add folder to library'.
Browse to select your external hard drive (or the sub folder(s) within it that contain your music files). This should place all the tracks that are on your hard drive into your iTunes library. The tracks stay in their original location on your external hard drive, by adding the folder to your iTunes library you're just letting iTunes where they're located.
Then, just plug your iPod in and sync it.

How do I retrieve an app that I bought. The icon is in my library. But the program isn't in my device. When I look in the file that contains the app and try to open it, it doesn't open.

This can be done through the App Store on the device that you'd like the app installed on.

Open the App Store on your device.
Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.
Tap Updates from the bottom navigation bar.
Tap Purchased on the resulting screen.
Locate the app in your Purchased tab.
Tap the download button.
The app will begin downloading and you'll be taken back to your home screen.

Before exiting your program, serialize your TreeMap to disk. After starting your program serialize your TreeMap from disk.
First stop should be your text book to learn what Serialization is and how it works, then try to write some code, then ask us to help with any problems.

I normally do backups of my iTunes music files. After a recent hard disc failure I tried to reload iTunes from these backups. This was ok, i.e. the music was all there but I lost my ratings. How do I have to save the music library to include the rating information?

Does this only happen with the tracks you have downloaded from the iTunes Store? Perhaps you should work the suggestions in this Apple support document first.
