ITunes 9 Grid View dissapointment

First of all white background of grid view is awful, it looks cheap!
Dark background in 8.x versions looked much more elegant.
We can not adjust the size of icons anymore...
Dissapointment....

*Found the fix!* (Be sure though to still contact Apple about your displeasure.)
Go here to this kind soul from Deviant Art who has the hack files to return the background to dark charcoal black again!

Be sure to thank him. I followed the instructions, which only took a couple minutes and .......Whoo Hoo!

  • Why does iTunes grid view not remember default sort settings?

    Hello,
I am using iTunes 8.1 and I like to use the Grid view (Artists). Using the Grid view and clicking on an artist to look at the albums, I like to sort the albums within using "Album by Year".
Once I have made this change, it sticks until I close iTunes, so I can go into any other artist from Grid view and the albums will be listed using "Album by Year" automatically.
When I restart iTunes and click on an artist in grid view, iTunes has reverted to sorting via the first column, the one with track numbers. I then have to manually click "Album by Year" to get it sorted again.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if there is a solution to it? This also happened in iTunes before I upgraded to 8.1.
    Thanks

Unfortunately, I can't offer any solution because I'm experiencing the same kind of trouble. Please help us! It would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,

  • ITunes Grid View

I have recently updated to iTunes 8 (normal update through OS X) and am using the Grid view layout.
I have noticed that when it is in grid view and you hover over album art and press the "Play Album" button that it starts from where you finished from last time (e.g. half way through a song/album) and not the beginning of the whole album.
I have looked through preferences but have not found a way to turn this off, is there one and I have just missed it?

I haven't tried it but there is an Options tab in in Get Info window. One of the options is "Remember Position" for an album or "Remember Playback Position" for a single cut. Perhaps this is set and you can uncheck it?

  • All episodes don't show up in Grid view

I've got 20 seasons of Top Gear all converted and waiting to be added to iTunes. They exist on my external HD, so when I drag them in to iTunes I hold in Alt/Option, so they stay there.
If I drag in the folders for seasons 1 through 13, all episodes show up, and if I select the show in iTunes I see "tabs/buttons" for Season 1, Season 2, etc etc.  Pic here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2213114/2013-08-23_18-05-00.jpg
However if I drag season 1 through 14 (or more), only season 1 shows up in iTunes grid view.  However all episodes/season show up in List view, and all are available on my Apple TV.
If I drag just, say, season 14 through 20, they add fine.  But if I then add 1 through 13, again only 1 season shows in Grid view.
In all cases the correct number of "New" episodes shows on the blue banner on the cover (i.e "99+").
Top Gear generally has about 6 to 10 episodes per season.
I have exactly the same problem with The Simpsons.
All my other shows added fine.  Just The Simpsons and Top Gear had issues.  I doubt it's a co-incidence those are the only 2 shows I have with hundreds of episodes and 20+ seasons each.  It's almost as if iTunes has some kind of limit…
    Running iTunes 11.0.5 and OS X 10.8.4.

Your website has a link to a feed at
    http://feeds2.feedburner.com/CrossCultureCalvaryChapelPodcast?format=xml
This feed contains the itunes:new-feed-url tag, forwarding to a feed at
    http://calvarychapel.nl/index.php?option=comsermonspeaker&task=podcast&feed=RSS2.0&nohtml=1
This latter feed is what is being used when you click on the 'subscribe' button in the iTunes Store, and the result matches the feed. (The list you have under 'Podcasts' in your own iTunes application probably includes earlier episodes: removing them from the feed doesn't remove them once downloaded, but the removed episodes don't show for new subscribers).
However, the iTunes Store page lists 114 episodes, the last being 28-3-09, thus not showing later additions, and shows earlier episodes present in neither feed. Therefore the page has the correct feed link for subscribers but itself has not updated since March - since when you have changed the URL and deleted earlier episodes. Why this should be I can't say: there is usually a delay before changes show, but only a day or two. It's peculiar that it should have failed to update the Store page but has the correct link on the 'Subscribe' button, and I can only suggest you try contacting Support:

  • Playing a playlist with multiple albums in Grid View in iTunes 8

    Hi All,
Here is a situation I came across, that was quite unexpected compared to the behaviour in iTunes 7.
Suppose I have a playlist with multiple artists/albums. I have this playlist in Grid View. I choose this playlist from the left side navigation tree and press the play button. This playlist is set to shuffle by songs. I expect it to play a song and jump to the next song. iTunes 8 would just keep playing the same songs in the first album listed in the Grid View and would not jump to any other.
    http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/4726/itunes20080910191124oh2.jpg
In this screenshot above, it will keep the songs in "The Very Best Of". If I press Ctrl+L (show now playing) then it would show only the songs in this album. This quite explains why it doesn't play other songs.
To explain a bit more on what's happening:
If I go to List View the song now playing does not have the Now Playing icon:
    http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1113/itunes20080910191500vf3.jpg
Notice it is playing "Opa Opa" but in the List View, it doesn't show it.
This is because in Grid View if you play a song from the playlist, it has its own "virtual playlist"
    http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/5269/itunes20080910191525wl1.png
Notice the now playing icon there.
    Why is this the case?
I hope you guys understood what I was trying to explain.

turingtest2: I had already done exactly what you described in the *"Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist"* section of your article. But what I hadn't done was the advice you gave as the last sentence in this section...*"In addition if you change the Compilation status of tracks they may be temporarily treated as tracks from an Unknown Album, again things should resolve themselves if you close and reopen iTunes".* As soon as I closed and restarted iTunes, the Unknown Album with five tracks disappeared and the tracks were again displayed with the correct album.
Your article is a great read, even for people who understand iTunes...there is a lot of helpful advice there to have bookmarked just in case any of the other problems you address are ever encountered. Thanks for taking the time to compile it and share it iTunes users.

  • How do I change background shade of grid-view in iTunes 11?

I've just downloaded and installed iTunes 11 and can't seem to find a way to alter the background colour of grid view. It's bright white or bright white! No options to tone it down to grey or black. Help!

Looks like they removed that option
I was a little worried they would actually, I have no idea why they sometimes remove cool features on updates.
Keep your eye out, someone will probably find a way to hack it back to grey.

  • Problem sorting by Artist in grid view using Itunes 8

I have a lot of albums that contain various artist and i set up the info in each with the correct artist name and "various artist" as the album artist. In itunes 8 when i use grid view and use show by artist it displays by album artist putting all the albums by "various artist" in one grid. It's correct in list and cover flow view. How can i set the grid view to display by the artist of the song and not the album. (ex. Soundtrack from the motion picture Tropic Thunder: Display "U Can't Touch This" under MC Hammer instead of Various Artist)

Actually, the grid view should be using the Album Artist tag. When the Album Artist tag was added in iTunes 7.0, the intent was to allow users to properly tag songs based on the artist and any guest artists. For instance, on Luther Vandross’ album +Give Me The Reason+ Track 6, “There’s Nothing Better Than Love” is a duet. Therefore, while the Artist tag for the rest of the tracks should be ‘Luther Vandross’, the correct tag content for Track 6 is ‘Luther Vandross duet with Greory Hines’. Without having ‘Luther Vandross’ in all the Album Artist tags for all 9 album tracks, iTunes would split the album as if there are two albums of the same name by different artists.
The other situation are producer-driven albums like Quincy Jones’ +The Dude+ or +Back On The Block+ . These are not compilations, as you described, because the songs were produced for the albums and Quincy Jones, although not a performer on any of the tracks, is the album artist. The exception is soundtracks that are compilations of songs typically produced for a given film. Like the situation you describe, each track has a different artist, so by having ‘Quincy Jones’ in the Album Artist tag for each track, iTunes maintains the integrity of the album and keeps the tracks properly grouped.
(Now if Apple would only acknowledge and fix the persistent bug that does not carry these grouping and sorting features over to the user’s music folder when they have enabled “Keep iTunes Music folder organized” in iTunes’ preferences.)
The situation you are specifically referencing is that of tagging compilations—albums that consist of tracks by various artists where there is no actual album artist—but you have used the Album Artist tag effectively forcing iTunes to see them as single artist albums. I also tag compilations—e.g., Various Artists (Hip Hop), Various Artists (Jazz), Various Artists (R&B), Various Artists (Soundtrack), etc.—, so I understand what you have done. Unfortunately, the fix for forcing the grid view to recognize individual artists in compilations may require you to clear out the Album Artist tag on all of your compilation album tracks forcing iTunes to revert to the Artist tag in place of the Album Artist tag.
What I would suggest is clearing the Album Artist tag of just one compilation and seeing what happens. If the album appears under “Unknown Artist”, or some other generic listing, in the grid view then iTunes only recognizes the Album Artist tag and I am at a loss as to what you could do. If it works as you hope, then you can go ahead an clear out the Album Artist field on the rest of your compilation albums.
The downside of clearing the Album Artist field is that iTunes will revert to its pre-version 7 habits and break up the albums; that is, a compilation with 12 tracks by 12 different artists will appear in the various views as 12 different albums albeit with the same name and cover art. To keep the tracks properly grouped in other views, you will need to mark all of the tracks from the compilation albums as “Part of a compilation” in the info dialog.

  • ITunes 9 grid view background color?

It seems iTunes 9 has changed the background color of grid view from black to white. How can I change it back? I can't find anything in preferences or the iTunes help manual. Thank you for the help

    Andreas Bauer wrote:
*Thank you Apple* for bringing the *Dark Grid View Background* back!
I'm all for change if it improves things. But I'm not sure the latest iTunes look change is all for the better.
The dark Grid View background was just one thing.
The new iTunes store look doesn't do it for me either. It's just a sea of icons on white background. Everything drowns in a blur of color specks...

  • ITunes 8.0.1 Grid View & audiobooks

I'm experiencing weird views when using Grid View for Audiobooks. I have a lot of them (many 2 or more files per book) and only 1 or 2 are actually clustered by title. All of the others are appearing as single books. One or two actually have correctly clustered the 2 parts for the title and display as one cover with (2 items) underneath.
I've searched the forums and haven't found anything related to this. These are books by the same author with the same title, not compilations. Also, for the ones displaying "correctly," the titles are all formatted precisely the same as the ones displaying incorrectly. (Note: if I change to Artists view in Grid, it clusters all book files for that author under a single bookcover - obviously only correct for one of the books).
Anyone have a clue how to make audiobooks clsuter correctly? These are all being downloaded from Audible.com and come with the same metadata for each title.
    Thanks!

I have the same problem when I download from Audible.com. I gave them a call with no help. I suspect they are importing the audio book into itunes without sorting the download by book name somehow. If you get a response that helps pass it along. They basically said to look at it in the list view only. All the book artworks are loaded correctly but the grid view doesn't recognize the separate books.

  • ITunes 10's "grid view" displays my songs out of order.

I really enjoy the "grid view" option on iTunes 10. However, I have noticed it has displayed a few of my albums in the incorrect order. I have checked the tags, and they are all set to the same artist, album, album artist, genre, album artwork, amount of tracks, and amount of discs. They have all been numbered correctly from 1 to x. Some tracks (i.e. 5, 9, 13) are displayed in order at the top and the other tracks are below them in order as well. I do not have this problem in any other view format. I would like to troubleshoot this so that I can go on enjoying grid without this annoying glitch.

I am finding the same problem.
The tracks display in the correct order in List view, but not in Grid or Artist List view. They play in the correct order no matter what view is being used, just display wrong.
For example: In the image below, they will still play in order, so if I play the "first" one (#10), it will continue on to play 11-18 in order, it is just the view that is in error.
The solution that seemed to work for me was to force track numbers by adding them to the track number field and sorting on that. So the problem may be disc rips and other media not from iTunes or Amazon may not necessarily have proper track numbers.
Now if that were the only bug I keep running in to.

  • My itunes video playlists (grid view) keep changing to audio playlists

I'm using iTunes 10.7 and stream a lot of movies to my AppleTV. I have video playlists and the AppleTV recognizes them as such.
Lately, my video playlists, in the poster art (grid) view, have been changing to audio playlists and changing the order of the files from alphabetized by Title, to alphabetized by Artist. The buttons at the top of the playlist - "Movies Genres Unwatched" have changed to "Albums Artists Genres Composers"
If I create a new playlist, it retains the video qualities until I select another playlist, then it changes to the audio playlist, when I select it again.
The titles are all out of sequence, on the Apple TV - reflecting the setting on the poster view setting (e.g. "Artist") on the itunes playlist.
What do I have to do the get the playlists to retain the video characteristics?

    thanks. i got it.

  • Prefer older grid view of itunes store - can i get it back?

after resisting for a couple of years, i updated my version of the itunes store to itunes9. in the process, i lost the no-nonsense grid view listing of tracks for purchase, including the ability to click-and-drag to re-size columns when not all the info is visible. predictably, the 'new' store view is laden with album art graphics, and seems designed to launch new windows favouring album purchases at every step. however, the main problem is: it loads and navigates SO slowly and clunkily for me, it's driving me nuts. any way to get back to the old grid view?

Sadly, no. I don't like the new store layout, either, for reasons you mention, and others.
Such as, not really being able to sort by release date.
Clicking on the Artist name, followed by "See All", now gives items that aren't even remotely associated with that artist.
You can send feedback to apple:

  • ITunes 9 Grid view header disabled by default

Ok, the subject is pretty clear. In Grid view the so-called header - the pane on top where the Albums-Artists-Genres-Composers buttons are, and also the scroll box is - is disabled in default view for every playlist, including main library. One needs to turn it on for each playlist manually. Or maybe I just don't know something?

    THANK YOU!
I was having the same issue. I have always used the top columns (in descending order to reduce my options) to sort through my library and was desperately searching for column view controls. I was already considering reinstalling the old Itunes.
In Itunes 8 I remember that the column view was turned off and on with Ctrl + B. That still works but I hadnt figured out how to control it untill I found your post.
    Lots of thanks.

  • My itunes cpu 70% in grid view

my itunes use 70% cpu only when in grid view , it's ok in list view and cover flow view ,
    i reinstall it, nothing
    itunes version 10.2.2
    mac os x version 10.6.7
    what can i do.............?

They redraw the icons all the time when in grid view that is so silly.

  • ITunes 11 how can the window background colour be changed from white to black in Grid View?

How do I change the window background colour ,in Grid View, from the new, default, white back to the good old, more easy on the eye, black?
Apple did this to us in iPhoto some time ago and had to add a preference for shades of grey other than white. Why didn't Apple learn from this mistake?

It is good to know I am not alone. The first thing I did after downloading iTunes 11 was go into preferences to change the background color. But alas, the option for a dark background is gone. I also was kind of disappointed in the lack of ability to resize the artwork, but not to the extent of some other commenters here.
I will say this though. I love the way the albums expand with custom colored backgrounds based on each album's artwork colors. This looks fantastic. Still it would be nice to accomodate those who prefer to use a dark background for the overall application's theme.
So, Apple, I join with my fellow users in requesting the return of resizable artwork, and the option for at least a dark (or an even further customizable) background color for the overall theme of the application. Thanks!
    Godspeed,
    Nuckels
