ITunes 9 Hanging on Updating library

When I start iTunes 9, I see a window that says it is updating my library. There is no cancel button. At around 5% it just stops and hangs.
I killed it twice and when I tried to restart iTunes, I get a "file locked" error. Reverted to the one that the update created for me (thanks apple), started it up and it hangs on 5%. Last time I waited over 1.5 hours. Activity Monitor shows it as not responding. I have just over 6000 songs under music.
This was is a previous post but the person who started it seemed to have worked it out. I am still having the issue.

I waited 3.5 hours for it to complete.
It was not frozen, the application was still responding, but nothing could be pressed and it just pinged at me.
In desperation, I wrote a long post to this forum. The instant I pressed post, iTunes went from 5% complete to 100%.
I recommend just waiting, but I really hope Apple addresses this soon.
I also apparently cannot use this forum interface.

  • ITunes hanging after moving library to wifi drive

    I have MacBook Pro (bought Feb 2011, upgraded to Lion), Airport Extreme and a new external hard drive connected through Airport Extreme. Today, I moved my library to the remote drive and imported a HUGE collection into iTunes (some 25+ GB of songs). While importing 1655th song out of 4200+ songs, iTunes hanged and I had to 'force quit' the process. Since then, iTunes just keeps hanging everytime I start the program.
    Connectivity to the wifi drive is not a problem, as I am sitting practically right next to it.
    While trying several things, I upgraded iTunes to the latest version (10.4.1), but the issue continues.
    Do I just leave the MacBook next to AE to give itunes a chance to sync the huge collection? Is the collection corrupted and needs to be made again (how do I do that)?
    Please help!!
    Thanks
    Harmeet

    Move it all back to the C: drive to exactly where it was before, and follow these directions to fix it.

  • ITunes crashes while updating library

    For the past few months, whenever I start up iTunes, it automatically begins to update my song library. This is fine and all, but once it gets about 4/5 of the way done, iTunes crashes. There is no apparent way to stop iTunes from updating the library, since it wont let me select the window with the progress bar or the main iTunes window itself. I've tried reinstalling iTunes twice and fiddling around with quicktime, but nothing seems to change. I've posted this topic before and I came back an hour later and it was on page five with zero responses, so that sort of lead me to believe no one had an answer for me, but I'm becoming very sick of having my iTunes and thus my entire music library bricked. So please, any and all help will be GREATLY appreciated.

    The last time I saw that (although it has just been the once), the problem was caused by a damaged library file. Given that you're getting the error when iTunes is doing the library update, I suspect it's the same issue.
    Try an iTunes library recreation as per the instructions in the Re-creating the iTunes Library file section of the following document:
    iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists
    Does that get you past the error?

  • ITunes & trouble initializing - Update Library hangs

    Hi everyone,
    I recently upgraded to the latest version of iTunes and, like everyone else, I'm having difficulties.
    The program opens correctly. However, when it begins to update my library automatically, it completes about 85% of the update and then hangs ... and hangs ... and hangs some more.
    After the program freezes and ceases updating the library, the computer comes to a virtual halt and I have to shut it down manually.
    I've reinstalled quicktime, but I'm not certain that has anything to do with this problem.
    Any thoughts?

    Killed the processes, installed from .dmg, everything fine.

  • Installed lates version of iTunes. Now it hangs 'while updating library' Any ideas?

    Running iTunes for Windows, on 64-bit Vista PC. I tried uninstalling iTunes and re-installing, but it still stops running while 'updating itunes library'.

    I searched this forum for simlar problems. I found:
    Start iTunes in Safe Mode
    Open iTunes in Safe Mode to isolate any interfence with plug-ins or scrpits not manufactured by Apple.
    Hold down the Shift and Control keys while opening iTunes. If performed correctly, you should see a dialog that says "iTunes is running in safe mode" before iTunes finishes starting up.
    After clicking Continue, determine whether the issue you were experiencing persists in Safe Mode.
    If you see the same issue while iTunes is in Safe Mode, proceed to the Create a New User Account section below. If you do not experience the same issue, consult iTunes: Troubleshooting issues with third-party iTunes plug-ins for steps on how to remove thrid-party plug-ins.
    The library fully updated after a few seconds. I then closed iTunes and started it normally. It runs fine now. I'm not sure what caused the problem, but it was fixed. I hope it works for you. For the full article click:

  • ITunes Hanging after updating few songs

    Just bought a new 80GB and have been trying transfer songs from my library. My library is in an external 200 GB hard disk. I upgraded to iTunes 7.2. Run XP
    Now i Tunes hangs regularly after updating songs ranging 20 to 200 or so songs. I have over 7k songs and find it a big trouble to force shut iTunes each time.
    Have tried resotring with same result.
    Any solutions I would be mighty obliged.

    I do not have shuffle turned on. I do have one track that without the check. I thought that this check meant skip when shuffling. When I look at the options for the track (Get Info/Options) "Skip when shuffling" is not checked. iTunes does not quit on this song.

  • Itunes freezes during update library after 7.3 upgrade

    When starting iTunes, it immediately begins to update the library and freezes about half way through. This is after I updated from 7.2 to 7.3. I have a LOT of songs and I'd rather not uninstall iTunes.
    Anyone know what's wrong here? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    There have been multiple posts on this topic. If you're interested, try searching the forums. (Maybe someone has a better answer than me). Here's my latest post:
    My understanding is that there's a corrupt file in the library that's causing this problem--either a podcast or a video. You can search these forums for other threads on this subject.
    From what I've read, you need to figure out which file is causing the hang and remove it (easier said than done).
    One thing you can try is to pull all of the podcast and/or video files (you could try one or the other first, too.) out of your iTunes folder before you try to launch iTunes. Leave them on your desktop.
    If iTunes launches successfully, then you can slowly try to add these files back to your iTunes folder to find out which one causes the hang.
    Not ideal advice, I know. But it may be a way to get iTunes back up and running again.

  • ITunes 7 freezes updating library on G3 iPod

    I recently bought a Macbook 2 Ghz w/ 1 Gig of RAM and 60 Gig drive. I have 25 Gig of music on an external fireware drive. I have let the system updater do all the recommended upgrades as of yesterday. I used the new computer wizard to transfer all my user data and settings from my G4 iBook when I set up the MacBook (Ibook has fried GPU but can be accessed as a external drivbe) Since I set the Macbook up I have deleted some duplicate songs and consolidated my library onto a freshly formatted exteranl firewire drive. I can play music in iTunes without problem. I have a 30 Gig iPod w/ Dock Connector. This iPod has virtually the same music I imported into iTunes it was last connected to the G4 iBook.
    When I plug the iPod into the machine iTunes immediately starts to "Update the Library". The status bar on the dialog gets about 1/3 done rather quickly and then it freezes. The only way I can get the iTunes to quit is to force quit it from the Activity Monitor, which reports iTunes is not responding. Most of the time I have to force reboot the machine as well. I have done this a dozen times or more. I have left the machine in it's frozen state overnight and it never came back.
    The iPod still works on it's own but I can not sync it with the machine or connect it to the machine without locking up iTunes.
    Is there a way to completely reset an iPod without hooking it up to the computer?
    Is there a way to set iTunes to not sync the iPod as soon as it is connected? (seems the option for this is on the page that comes up after the ipod is connected)
    I've spent an hour on this forum and it seems lot's of people reporting similar problems but have not found any solutions.

    Today I ripped a couple of CD's with itunes.  I haven't used it in a while but it's up to date.
    The problem is that the ripped music shows up in the library when it's ripped, but if I exit itunes and come back in to it, it's not in the library.
    Same thing goes for  the view settings.  I'[ve change all permissions to remove read-only setting.
    Nothing seems to fix this.  Help!!

    Itunes version 10.2.2.12
    Windows 7, SP1 64bit

    Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
    Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeksare worth checking.)
    After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
    If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
    Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select anyiTunes, QuickTime and Bonjour entries and click "Remove".
    Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • A suggestion--please make Itunes behave better when updating library

    Whenever iTunes is running Updating Library, if I switch to another application, every 15-20 seconds iTunes pulls itself back and gives itself top level focus. I KNOW the library is updating. Why do I need to be reminded of this every 15 seconds. Basically, while the library is updating, I can't use my computer for anything else. Please make the "Updating Library" window stay in the background when the user has tabbed away to another application. Thanks!

    May want to leave feedback here:

  • IPod/iTunes 6 hangs during updating

    I've just spent most of a weekend trying to figure out why a 40GB click-wheel iPod will not sync with iTunes. I'm at a bit of a loss here. I know there are several (long) posts on update issues - perhaps this is just another case. Here's the low-down:
    Gear:
    * iPod 40GB 'click-wheel' model, 3.1 firmware (2005-09-23 update), firewire interconnect direct to iMac (no dock)
    * iMac G4 1GHz, OS X 10.3.9, iTunes 6.0.1, about 1600 songs
    Symptom:
    iPod appears on the desktop and can browse folders. iTunes starts. Hangs during iTunes update on a random song. Usually <20 into the list - but sometimes anything up to song 1000. Flashing 'do not disconnect' symbol freezes on iPod LCD, iMac hangs (Activity Monitor indicates a >90% cpu load on iTunes process, generally requires a 'hard' restart to recover the iMac - even after force-quitting the iTunes process).
    Tried:
    * Reset iPod
    * Restore iPod with 3.1
    * Restore iPod with 3.0.2 (2005-06-26)
    * iPod into disk mode and restore
    * iPod disk verify and erase using OS X Disk Utility, restore firmware
    * New firewire cable
    * iPod into diagnostics mode - run most tests including HDD scan (all pass)
    * iMac disk permissions verify/fix
    * Delete iTunes preferences and restart - library rebuilds
    * Copy music to a new location, delete all iTunes data, now start afresh and
    use add to library to rebuild library
    * Removed songs and entire albums that sync freezes on (just freezes on
    another song)
    * Checked out iMac firewire ports with iSight
    * Discussed with Apple Tech guy at Genius bar, agreed pretty much all steps
    had been covered. iPod exchanged believing something like iPod connector
    to be the issue. No difference.
    So I'm pretty much convinced at this stage the issue lies with the iMac software. iPod and cable have been thoroughly investigated and changed out. iMac firewire ports work with iSight.
    I've seen some posts suggesting deleting and restrong from the 10.3.9 update the iPod driver (iPodDriver.kext). This seems pretty drastic! I'm hesitant to go get a Tiger upgrade - this should work with 10.3.9.
    Apologies for the long post - but I'd be interested to hear views at this point.
    Thanks

    Hey, you the man. I just want to say thank you. I hooked up a just repaired touch wheel iPod to my son's g4 iMAC, and it kept hanging on random songs and even the one's it transferred, it did slowly. I tried everything everyone else has, I did restores and erases forever. And it kept hanging up, so I had to frequently disconnect the iPod to get control back of the computer. This morning I was on the phone with Apple tech for over an hour. His conclusion was that because some of the songs weren't purchased from the Apple Store, I needed to manually transfer each song one at a time. I had to go, so didn't get to try it until later today and same problem. Again I called Apple tech support. Guy was very nice, on phone with him for 90 minutes, he didn't think the first advice made much sense. He gave up in frustration when we couldn't get into the disk utility because iPod kept going to automatic update. He told me to call back tomorrow and speak to a specialist. He said he's never had this much difficulty with an iPod. After the call, I managed to get into the disk utillity and do the erase and repair but didn't do anything. When I finally deactivated the auto update, manually transferring the songs one at a time didn't solve the problem. I read your post, started up after disconnecting the iSight firewire cable, took a chance of activating auto update of songs again, and voila, it transferred all the songs (all 176 of them) in about 10 seconds, like a warm knife through butter. And as they said on Saturday Night Live, it felt "like butter." I will call Apple tomorrow and tell them they really need to do something about this. In the meantime, I'll keep iSight disconnected whenever songs are being transferred into the iPod.
    Again, your advice is much appreciated. Thank you for the post.

  • After installing iTunes 10.5 update i get the following message when trying to play any song in my Library "The song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"  how do i fix this??

    I have an iPod Classic and work on Windows 7.
    i recently installed iTunes 10.5 update and since then i cannot play any of the songs in the Library - i get the following message
    "The song could not be used because the original file could not be found.  Would you like to locate it?"
    what happened to all my songs (almost 2000) How can i get them back into my music library?
    Please help - i do not want to spend another week downloading all my cd's onto my computer !!!!!

    Try my script FindTracks. Select a few of the missing files to start with then run the script. Choose No at the first prompt so that you can check how it works track by track, then confirm or edit the location of the media folder where your files are. Once you are happy with how it behaves let it process larger numbers of tracks automatically.

    this just started w/ me yesterday.  I was running 10.5.3, and nothing changed - the message just appeard out of nowhere.  I update to the latest iTunes 10.6 but the message is the same.
    Sounds like probably some sort of Library file corruption.
    The two options available in the message box are "Download" and "Quit".  Download is useless because I'm already running the latest.  Quit is pretty useless.
    I was going to just create a new Library and re-import all my music.  Of course, all my iPhone sync settings are going go have to be recreated.
