Itunes 9 hangs on importing media

I have recently switched to Mac and need to import 20Gb of audio (mixture of mp3 / mp4) into itunes.
Everytime I try this itunes hangs after about 20 seconds. I've tried dragging folder across and selecting from the menu, same result.
Anyone any ideas as I can update my ipod at the moment.
Using Itunes 9.1 and OSX10.6.2
Cheers

okay, for the purpose of testing, you could create a (temporary) new admin user account on your Mac, log into that, and try to add a few of those files.
what happens ?
edit:
before attempting above, try his first:
check if you have +read & write+ permissions for your iTunes music folder. in finder, right-click on it and +get info+. unlock the little padlock (you may have to enter your admin password) and change the permission settings. next, click on the little gear-shaped icon and +apply to enclosed items+ like so
you may also give everyone read & write access. if this doesn't help, try the same on your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder).
now try adding the files again.

  • ITunes hangs on importing .xml library

Hi all, this is a long standing problem I've had and I can't seem to find a good answer, maybe someone here might have some clues.
I am running the latest iTunes 10 build on my 2006 Intel iMac. My collection is approaching 500 gb (lots of audiobooks and fairly long DJ sets) so it's stored on an external HDD. It's connected to the iMac via a high powered Targus USB hub.
About once every three months or so iTune will hang on the 'importing .xml library' box when opening. It doesn't matter how long you leave it, ultimately you'll have to press 'cancel' and it will import what it could and make the old library 'Damaged'. Sometimes you can just delete the new library and rename the damaged one and it's ok. Only sometimes though. What usually happens is I have to reimport everything, which takes up to 12 hours when you include the gaplass playback stuff.
Am I missing a possible solution? It's been going on since at least iTunes 7. This is the first time it's done it in 10, though it's an identical error to all previous models.

And this is what it looks like. I have taken screen shots:
First it does this until finished (100%):
(It's German and it says, "3238 of 5748 files are being copied").
Then comes a new window showing this:
(This one says, "38 of 5748 element(s) imported")
and then this just stops at 10% looking like this until I force-quit the Organizer:

Running iTunes 6 on WinXP (Sony Vaio RS402, 1.5Gb RAM, P4 2.8GHz) I often have a problem with iTunes hanging while importing the last track of a CD (both commerical and burned). Tried using 2 different CD drives but the same problem. Any ideas?

  • Hang during import from camera or media - HELP!

iPhoto hangs during import from camera or media reader. Works for 20 or more photos, then hangs. No response at all. Must force quit. After restarting the import, it will go further the next time, then hang again. And again. And again. Eventually the import completes. After that, all is OK until next import. VERY FRUSTRATING. Especially with 8GB media cards. ARRGH!
I've tried rebuilding iPhoto library (all options). Using iPhoto 7.1.5 on OS X 10.5.6. 4GB ram, intel dual core.
Help me Obe-Wan. You're my only hope.

I usually use the media reader. After the imports started hanging is when I tried importing direct from the camera to see if it made a difference. No difference.
I've reformatted the media. No difference. Still hangs on first import after reformat. Multiple media cards, all same result. Tried different USB ports, same result. Tried different media readers. Same result.

  • HT3819 iTunes is saying it cannot import media because the computer is not authorized, but it has been authorized. Help!

I am trying to share my iTunes library and have Home Sharing turned on both computers with the same Apple ID and have the second computer authorized, but when I try to import media, iTunes is telling me the computer is not authorized. Help!

The computer needs to be authorised to play with whatever Apple ID purchased the music. You may need each computer to be authorised with all Apple IDs.
Have a look at the get info summary page of the media and see what Apple ID purchased it. Then authorise the computer with that Apple ID

  • How to import media in bulk into iTunes v11

New to iTunes. have a ton of ripped CDs that I purchased & ripped. Cannot figure out how to get iTunes to see them. They reside in their individual (by artist) folders under the iTunes folder.
    Running Win 7 PC
    I've tried:
    - Resettin the default directory
    - Importing (only allows 1 file at a time)
    - Click/Dragging from Explorer into iTune (doesn't work)
    - Adding a FOLDER to a library (this option doesn't appear - at least in v11)
In short is there a way to simply get iTunes to 'see' my media? I copied it under the default dir - but still does not see it. I've read about CONSOLODATE - but this seems to only be available if the songs are already in iTunes.
as you can see - I've exhausted a lot of tips/options but still hitting a wall
    Any/all help much appreciated.

  • Fix? iTunes slow to import CD, sync iPod, freezes on credits - Page Faults

    All,
Using Windows XP on a computer with 512 M of memory (lightning fast for it's time) I found that iTunes would import CDs at 0.3x to 0.7x, way too slow. iTunes resonded slugglishly to UI commands. And the credits screen (help - about iTunes) would freeze. Other applications do not have this problem. I found that iTunes memory management is sub optimal, at best. This causes iTunes to swap portions of its active program memory to the hard disk, slowing the interface by a factor of x1000.
How to verify if this is happening:
    1. Open task manager by RIGHT clicking on the date on the windows control bar
    2. Click on the "Process" tab, then from the menu select "View" then "Select columns . . "
    3. Make sure "CPU", ("handles" (i.e. open files), "threads" (i.e. parallel processes), and "page faults" are checked. Page faults are swap of memory to the hard disk.
    4. Open iTunes, use as usual (e.g. view credits)
    5. If iTunes becomes slow (right away in my case), watch for increasing page faults (what I experience) or excessive threads or handles.
In my case I'm getting over 1000 page hits a second when viewing credits. Someone didn't use good programming skills. (Not necessarily Apple, see below)
Note: I see, and expect, the CPU to go to 100% while importing CDs.
Please note: ** I do not use a mail client on this machine. ** I use a web based mail program and do not use MS outlook, and I don't want to. I only mention this because when I used iTunes, it locked up and I also received an error saying that I needed to setup my outlook client. Turning off automatic updates seems to have solved this lockup.
Since I run Word, excel, iExlorer, games, and windows media manager without error I'm having trouble understanding why iTunes uses so much system resources. Poor development tools? Virtual machine? Bug in complier library?
    Thigs to try to fix:
Since this is a memory issue: Try one or more of the following:
Minimize the screen when importing CD (screen calls are a hog)
This is what made the most improvement for me.
    Stop all other programs
This allowed me to stop the credits screen.
Try stopping / halting your antivirus programs
Try updating your Video card driver.
Note: I have a 'business' style video card. Aboslutly no bells/whistles. I do not wish to upgrade to a directX card just to allow easy transfers to my iPod / iTouch. I am using an Intel 82810E Graphics Controller with drivers provided by Wicrosoft.
Set your performance for best performance:
+ Right click on the "My Computer" icon
+ Click on "advanced" - "Performance" - Visual
+ Click on "adjust for best performace"
Note: This changes the XP look, had no effect for me.
If you are still having trouble, close iTunes, open the Windows Media player to import your CD with the following settings: Tools - Options
Player - Deselect start player in media guide (unless you really like it)
Copy Music - Deselect Copy Protect Music (otherwise it only works in WMP)
    Root cause?
I suspect that the iTunes is calling a function that it expects the video card to do easily. I suspect that the video card doesn't have that functionality, so the video card driver tries to emulate the functionality. The slow response from the driver apparently causes iTunes to go haywire.
    If you read this far:
Please let me know if you found this helpful by writing a response.
If you can think of anything (other than buying a new computer) that would allow this applicaiton to work, let me know. BTW: A real old version of quicktime works just fine on my 486!
    Apple developers:
I would be open for a test bed if you need older HW to qualify on.
Any idea why the credits would cause the page faults?
Any way to use a bare bones video library (e.g. no scrolled fades etc.)?
For an application that essentially copies files to my iPod, it sure uses a lot of resources.

    Welcome to AD!
This is a user chat board - Apple developers won't be seeing your post. You could re-send it using
itunes menu > Help > Provide iTunes Feedback

  • ITunes crashes when importing video (only)

I'm running 6.0.1, and have a new iPod. I wanted to use my g4 powerbook (1.33 MHz, 512 MB RAM, OS X Tiger 10.4.3) as my video library, and use my PC for my existing 350 GB music library. However, iTunes hangs with the beachball when I add any video (mpeg4 or h.264). The beach ball shows up for 2-3 seconds, and then iTunes closes, leaving me with an error report dialog box. Adding music to my library works fine, and the video files I'm using have added to my PC iTunes library and iPod with no issues at all. I've uninstalled iTunes and quicktime and reinstalled both (QT then iTunes) with no luck fixing the problem. This is SO frustrating, as I want to update my videos, iCal, address book, email all from my powerbook, and simply use my PC for music. I can't do this and no topics anywhere online seem to address this particular issue. This is the first time a piece of Apple software has crashed on me, and it does so consistently. Please help!

I have a similar problem. I am using 10.4.3 with iTines 6.01 and QT Pro 7.03. When I want to import a video file or when I want to watch the preview in the iTMS iTunes crashes straight away. No problems with music.
I have no idea what the reason could be. I think it has to to with the ltest update to 10.4.3, because everything works fine under 10.4.2 (with latest iTunes and QT).
Perhaps anybody has an idea what to do

  • ITunes no longer imports or plays CD's

I'm running iTunes 8 on Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, and I've run into a problem where if I try to import a CD, iTunes starts to import the first track, then just proceeds to skip through every track until it reaches the end with nothing imported. As it tries to import, you can see the little animated importing animation to the left of the song, but it only lasts a second or so then moves to the other tracks and does the same until the end.
I get this same issue when trying to play a CD, with iTunes skipping through all the tracks trying to play something. I've done the iTunes diagnostics for the CD drive, and all tests have passed. CDs play fine in Windows Media Player BTW.

I have a nearly identical problem. I can import part of the first track, and for some reason, part of the 6th track and then skips over the rest. It shows the play times as a huge number (somewhere around 667 hours) but imports nothing. I cannot play the CD with iTunes either.
I bought vista home premium and was disappointed to discover it does not come with a x64 bit disk. I used vista 32 bit software and had absolutely no problems with iTunes. After a fresh install of vista for 64 bit iTunes no longer works properly. I can still play anything I transferred from my backup HD but no importing is possible.
I have tried the error correction with no success. I tried installing and running 32 bit iTunes and it gives me an error saying something to the effect of "iTunes is improperly installed. You may need to reinstall iTunes to fix this problem."
I have a hard time believing that this is due to a x64 bit problem as Apple has used this technology longer than most. Is this an issue with the latest iTunes? I am going to fuss with it some more but I'm very frustrated that I can bearly use the new iPod I bought. Any suggestions from Apple users as well as Dark Side (*vista or windows in general :)*) users would be awesome.

I've been having trouble installing iTunes on my Windows 7 Pro 64bit. It hangs at the same place every time. I opened up task manager and found the culprit, DiFXInstall64.exe. When I kill this process, iTunes continues and finishes the installation. Why does it do that? What is DiFXInstall64.exe? And does it cause any problems if I kill the process and iTunes installs as usual? Will that damages the program and give trouble later on?

I have the "Copy files to iTunes music folder" option checked in preferences, but if I try to drag/drop a folder with MP3s into my library, iTunes will import/copy a few files and then ignore the remainder.
For example, I have a folder with 20 songs ripped from CD. I drag/drop this folder into the iTunes library. iTunes starts to import the songs, and copies 4 or 5 files, and then the import stops. It doesn't always happen on the same song, so I don't think it's a corrupt file. The same behavior occurs both in Vista 7.1 and on the Mac mini 7.1 as well. I'm at a loss as to why it will only import some of the files, and why it decides not to import at different files each time I try.
    Anyone else know/experience this?
    Thanks,

I've answered my own question after trying a few things. Here's what solved my problem.
I moved my iTunes library out of the My Music folder, which was the default folder for Windows Media Player rips, and was also included in WMP's monitored folders. There is some sort of conflict with Windows Media Player's monitor folders function when it comes to adding songs to the iTunes library and copying them to the iTunes music folder. It's like WMP intercepts the file so iTunes gets confused and stops.
As soon as I moved my iTunes library to a place where it wasn't monitored by WMP all was good again. I can now add folders to my library with copy files to iTunes music folder checked, and all works well.
From what I've seen, there are others on this board with this problem (in other threads). I hope my fix works for you!

  • Can I export itunes files to windows media player?

itunes lets me import music tracks from my windows media player, but I can't seem to get itunes tracks to go the othe way, into my windows media player. I'd like to be able to do both, as sometimes I buy tracks online at MSN, and sometimes at itunes, and I like to keep em on both players if possible. Can anyone advise? Thanks.

OK, if you buy songs at MSN you have to burn them to audio MP3s and re-rip them as MP3s to your PC into iTunes. Then they will go on your iPod.
If you buy songs at Apple you have to burn them to audio MP3s and re-rip them as MP3s to your PC intop whatever MSN uses. Then they will go on your MP3 player.
These different digital rights management schemes don't make it easy on us honest folks.
To quote Otto, "inconvenient" and that's the mildest comment I can use.
I myself have it easy because I like indie label music and I use emusic, which is mp3 to start with.
