ITunes 9 store classical music nightmare

I foolishly upgraded my iTunes from 8 to 9 and now I am finding it much harder to find things. One reason is that Composer and Release Date are no longer displayable in the "See all" view (which requires an extra click and wait to get to). Another reason is this view is divided into pages and sort only works within the current page.
Suppose I want to see the most recent albums by Steve Reich (say). How can I do that with iTunes 9?
Column Browser is no use for classical music either, because it uses Artist rather than Composer to filter for Album. I can't see any way of changing this.
Until searching the store for classical music becomes feasible again, I will go back to buying CDs and importing those. iTunes is simply too much hassle.

I find this and the white background both very irritating. And, on my collections, they have split my Classical genre into two playlists: Classical & Classical Music. Why? I now can't browse in one category of music. I have no way of readily knowing if the two overlap or not, since there are 700+ albums in each slot. I'm all for upgrading the quality of the software engine and improving the experience of using it. But not when there are such ill-conceived changes that make it more difficult. I would like an option to retain genre categories and the store interface.

  • ITunes for classical music

iTunes' structures are for "songs" (one song, one track). A CD of classical music contains one or more "works", each consisting of one or more "movements" (usually one track, one movement). How can I store and manage classical music with iTunes, or are there any alternative applications?

Obviously, different users will have different approaches to this problem.
I too am an avid fan of classical music (my iTunes library is over 90% classical). I'm not a great fan of a multiplicity of playlists, though, so I adopt a different approach. I have separate genres for different types of musical pieces — Chamber, Instrumental, Vocal, Operatic and so on. I then have one enclosing folder in my Source list (I call it Classical Categories), within which I have a number of smart playlists (Chamber Music, Concerto, Instrumental, Orchestral, Symphonic). I view these smart playlists as lists grouped with artwork and sort these lists by composer. This has the effect of neatly dealing with those situations where the original CD contains works by different composers, since it separates these out and displays them separately. CDs devoted to music by a single composer still remain grouped as a single item, but viewing as a list grouped with artwork helps make each CD stand out from its neighbours and aids clarity.
Using the search field within any of my smart playlists gives me instant access, for example, to all symphonies or all concertos (or whatever) by any single composer. In many ways, indeed, iTunes has proved to be a better way to access music in my library than was ever possible with physical CDs on shelves — I've lost track of the number of times I've found it frustratingly difficult to find a particular piece of music 'in the old days' because it was part of a CD which I'd filed under a different composer's name because music by that composer was what I bought the CD for originally.
As I say, we'll all find different solutions to the problem of using iTunes for classical music, but I'm happy with mine. What would be wonderfully helpful would be for Apple to introduce into iTunes the grouping by 'Work' which they use in the iTunes Store. I also wish they'd drop the use of that word 'song', which is so frustratingly inappropriate in a classical context, and replace it with 'track'. I've submitted feedback about these points on numerous occasions. Perhaps Apple will address the needs of classical collectors at some time in the future.

  • ITunes and Classical Music

I've got a question about iTunes and classical-music playback. The symphonies, concertos, etc. that I've got are all properly tracked (1 of 4, 2 of 4, etc.) and albumed (1 of 1, etc.). The problem that's driving me nuts comes when I play them on the iPod. I'll select, for example, Beethoven's 6th symphony and playback will consist of ... Movement 1, Movement 3, Movement 2 and Movement 4. What have I done wrong. I've tried clicking "yes" for compilations and still nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This might seem obvious, but make sure "shuffle" is not selected under Settings. I shuffle when I play pop and often to forget to switch the setting off when I decide to listen to classical.

  • HT2470 Why won't Itunes store my music library in my User/Music Folder, if I select my user name as a storage location in Itunes, Itunes creates folders for artist name right in my user folder, instead of in my user/music folder

Why won't Itunes store my music library in my User/Music Folder?
If I select my user name as a storage location in Itunes, Itunes creates folders for artist name right in my user folder, instead of in my user/music folder.  This gets especially annoying because if I tell Itunes to store my "media" in my user/music folder, Itunes will then create a folder named "music" in my "music" folder and will also create additional folders in my user/music folder location to store other non-music media in as well. It is very annoying to see this lack of affinity for folders between two Apple created programs.

Help iTunes locate your media folder:

  • HT1848 I had my Iphone in sync with iTunes in my desktop PC. I had purchased musics from iTunes Store and musics I did transfer from original CDs (legacy ones). How can I recover my whole music assests on Iphone to my iTunes in my notebook PC ?

I had my Iphone in sync with iTunes in my desktop PC. I had purchased musics from iTunes Store and musics I did transfer from original CDs (legacy ones). I no longer have my CDs once I did donate it to a public library. How can I recover my whole music assests on Iphone to my iTunes in my notebook PC ? At this time I only know how to transfer Apple Store purchased items.

iTunes will only import music purchased from the iTunes store.  If you need to import music to iTunes from your phone that wasn't purchased from iTunes you will need to use 3rd party software to do so, such as Touch Copy.

When will South Africa itunes store have music available to buy/download?

There is no one from Apple here, thus no one here can answer your question.

  • I have an iPod of rock and pop tracks which i generally use on shuffle mode. Now I have a second iPod to store classical music. If I plug it in to my pc will it duplicate my rock and pop or will it register as a different device?

I have an iPod Classic with rock and pop tracks on which I generally play in shuffle mode. I have now bought a second iPod Classic to store and play classical music as I don't want to shuffle rock with classical. What will happen when I attach the new iPod to my pc? Will it register as a new device with an iTunes file of its own, or will it duplicate what I already have on the original iPod?

You can attach the second iPod and configure it to sync whatever content you like without affecting the first iPod.  I would take a look at this article for different ways to manage multiple iPods on one computer.

  • ITunes Match & Classical Music

It seems to me that iTunes (and iTunes Match) are primarily designed for pop music and the like, hence the constant use of the word "songs". My iTunes library consists  of classical albums (all with artwork) and in some cases I'll have two are more albums containing different readings of the same work. The works are divided into movements and each movement generally is one track. Hence a symphony with five movements will have five tracks (not songs!). I am thinking of using iTunes Match, and my question is this: when iTunes Store tries to match my albums with their 26 million songs, if they find that they have, e.g. Beethoven Symphony 9, will they match that to mine even though it may not be the version that I have? What I am really asking is: if I use iTunes Match will I end up with EXACTLY what I already have in iTunes on my iMac?

I only listen to classical music on my iTunes, and when my spouse installed iTunes Match for me it was a bad experience
First of all all my playlists and play counts disappeared. Then, everything iTunes found a match it would rename that album to whatever it was called in the store.  Well classical alb,a don't usually have titles, so any old thing would pop up. One album came out as "featuring Vladimir Horowitz" with no indication of what the music was. I had organized my entire library by composer and piece, so this was really heart attack inducing for me.
In the end, I wasted the 25 dollars by turning it off permanently, and using my Mac time capsule to restore my library to the version before iTunes matched was installed. In my opinion it is NOT good for classical music lovers.

  • How do I change the way itunes stores my music?

When I look at my music library in the finder my itunes music is stored totally different than the way I have it in my itunes source list. This is creating annoyances for using front row for me. I want front row to organize my music exacty as I have it in my itunes source list. I think this all shoud have something to do with the default way that itunes stores music. Anyone know how to change this?

    Franz,
Perhaps I'm not understanding your question, but Front Row should be displaying your music much as it is in iTunes.
You really shouldn't even have to concern yourself with the file structure that iTunes uses in it's library.

  • Synced new ipod to itunes, now missing all but itunes store purchased music that is already on my phone

Synced our new ipod nano today to itunes. I don't know what happened but now all but itunes store purchases are in the library, my playlist is gone as well as all the music I had downloaded from my CD's. The iphone 5 still has everything on it but not on my computer. Frustrating!!   Now I'm scared to sync my phone, thinking I may lose all of my library off there as well. How do I get my library back on to my computer so I can transfer that music to my ipod?

Look into iTunes Match, a service from Apple that uploads your music in itunes to the cloud (not icloud) so you can download it to other devices.
    Try googling "itunes match"

  • ITunes does not recognize non-iTunes Store-purchased music - Windows 7.

No matter which iTunes Media folder location I select in 'advanced preferences', only songs purchased from the iTunes store are available in iTunes; not any ripped or otherwise downloaded music. This happened three days after downloading the latest iTunes update, after uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, and after moving music from a CD into the default folder location in 'advanced preferences'. After all this, I ripped a new CD in iTunes that played and displayed just fine in iTunes and was placed in the exact same folder as the 80 other CDs that are NOT visible, playable, or available in any other context in iTunes. I am spent. What gives?

Right click on the video in iTunes and select Get Info, go to the video tab and see if you can set Video Kind to Movie
When you managed to get it on the phone and you were able to just hear the sound, did you play the file from the video tab on your phone's ipod?

  • Itunes & ATV: Classical Music Question

Hi - I'm usually really excellent with organizing my library of classical but I just caem across something via my new Apple TV which has stumped me - I'm sure there is an easy fix...just not sure what it is. Here is the scenario:
I have in my library multiple complete sets of the Beethoven Symphonies (1-9). I don't have any issues when using iTunes alone or even my iPhone with this - on my Applek TV, I scroll down in the COMPOSER field and choose Beethoven. I am then presented with an alphabetical list of the works in my library on the track level - when you get down to the "Symphonies" instead of seeing:
Beethoven: Symphony 1: mvt 1 (Bernstein)
Beethoven: Symphony 2: mvt 2 (Bernstein)
    etc., etc.
    I see something like
Beethoven: Symphony 1: mvt 1 (Bernstein)
Beethoven: Symphony 1: mvt 1 (Abbado)
Obviously this would "go away" if I just chose this by ALBUM - in any event, is this where either the GROUPING or SORTING would help - I have yet to use them and I rarely see them used on purchased music as well. Thank you ina dvance for any help.
    Steve

From my experience, a good way to handle this issue is through playlists. I first create a new playlist for CD or CD set. When the CD is loaded and its contents appears in a new iTunes window, I select all of the tracks and drag them to the playlist. I've found it easier to work with the tracks within a playlist.
Once in a playlist, select the first track, right-click, select "get info", and select the tab labeled "sorting". There are 2 columns: the left one with "name", "artist", "album" , "album artist", "composer" etc, and the right with: "sort name", "sort artist", etc.
Because I use both an iPhone and and iPad where display space is limited, for the name, I have usually have something like this "Bach: Brandenburg #1 F 1-Allegro BWV 1046" but for the sort name "Bach: Brandenburg #1 BWV 1046-1" etc. For a piece in, for example, D minor I use "Dmin", and use musical notation for sharp and flat rather than the word or an abbreviation.
I've found absolutely no consistency in how tracks are numbered, sometimes with regular numerals, sometimes Roman numerals, occasional mislabeling, etc.
I'd like to know how others import and manage their classical music.

  • How to use itunes store purchased music in SP?

    Hello,
I know that iTunes store music is copywrited and you can't use it in any commercial product. But I am making a movie of my vacation that maybe 10 of my friends and family will see.
I would like to use my iTunes music in this movie and of course the songs I want are the ones that I bought on the music store.
How would I be able to use those songs in my project? If you can do it in iMovie, you should be able to do it in Soundtrack. If I bought a CD I would be able to!
Are there any kind of utilities to take that lock of the songs?
    D

i haven't actually tried any importing music with drm into STP yet, but in the past on my pc, if drm was causing issue with using an mp3 in certain applications (soundforge was a regular), i'd simply burn the track as audio and extract the audio back from the cd...
a little cheeky but drm should be there to prevent piracy, not hinder the legally paying customer

  • ITunes store purchased music not showing

today I went into the itunes store and went under music and purchased......blank screen!!  My books, movies, and tv shows are there but not my music.  Anyone else have this happen and did you get it fixed?  Other computer in the house isn't doing it there's is fine. It's working on my iphone and ipod.

Oops sorry I didn't phrase my question right >.< o
What I'm trying to explain is with the new iTunes Store 9.0 when you buy a song it fades out the name to show you have purchased the song. And recently I have purchased the full album in different parts at different times but never pressed the Buy Album button to get the full album at once. Now after I brought the full album all the songs say I have not purchased them or now let me buy them once again, when they are usually faded in the iTunes store like I said before.
So I was wondering why it did that because I wanted the extra feature for the full album. Since I have brought ever song on the album that I completed.
So earlier this year my hard drive failed and I got a new one which I restored with my Time Capsule. And before my hard drive failed I had purchased a few of the songs on the album (with 8.0), and when I installed 9.0, where you can see what songs you have by them being faded them out,it didn't show credit for any of the songs I had purchased before my hard drive failed.
If you need me to re-clarify or need more info feel free to ask ^.^ I did have some trouble writing up the question since it is hard to describe

  • ITunes Store bought music eventually stops playing

Anyone else had this problem? I was hoping by re-downloading all my music it would fix it but that seems to have done nothing.
For example: Two days ago I downloaded two Toby Keith songs from the iTunes store. I didn't do anything to my phone (including turning it off), when the next day suddenly the songs won't play. Every other song plays fine, except the two Toby Keith songs. At first I thought it was my car stereo, but it wouldn't play on the iPhone either. Plays fine on iTunes.
The only fix is to delete the song and re-download it. I would have normally thought it was the song download, but rewind to a few weeks ago, and my entire Hollywood Undead Swan Songs CD (also bought from iTunes) wouldn't play. It was at this point I deleted all my music and resynced it.
I tried resetting phone, resetting settings, deleting all music and starting again, and it even did it through a restore.
Is this a bug? Is it a bad phone?

Perhaps try resetting your iTunes Store Cache.
Go "Edit > Preferences". In the Advanced tab, click the "Reset cache" button shown in the following screenshot:
    ... and then click OK.
Restart your iTunes, and head back to the Store. Are you getting full previews now?
