ITunes accesses 'net and changes song titles. Please make it stop!

Hi,
Everytime I put in a CD, iTunes seems to access somewhere on the 'net and displays info about the CD, including stuff like "genre", blah blah blah.
But the most annoying thing is when it changes the title of a song... Recently I inserted a CD single of a pre-release from a well-known recording artist and iTunes decided to name the track "Send In The Clowns" (the actual title couldn't be further afield from this).
I really hate this "feature", want it to stop. How do I do it?

After getting your first reply, I did some quick research, and now I understand what you mean by "upload to the Gracenote database", and a few things came to mind...
(the following rant is not aimed at you, SpaceMonkey, not at all...)
First, I seem to remember that not too long ago iTunes offered a pref which let users decide whether or not they wanted iTunes to connect to the 'net. Now that pref is gone, hence my post here.
Ewwww... how slimily corporate. Take away a feature from software we've all paid for without disclosure; a feature that allows private people to decide whether or not they want to have their home enjoyment of music scanned by an anonymous corporation. Great...
Second, I'm not so sure I'd want to take even 1 millisecond out of my life to add information to this database. Not sure what the greater good is that I'd be contributing to, especially when I don't want the Gracenote "feature" to begin with. Maybe I'm just not that altruistic or something...
But to have to add info to the Gracenote database so that Gracenote won't send the wrong information back to my computer -- a feature I don't want anyway?
I think it's time for me to stop using iTunes, other than to purchase music from time to time. There are plenty of other ways for me to listen to audio on my system. It's all just too... icky... At the moment I'm taken aback at the lack of control I'm afforded while I use my computer, and how features I've paid for are taken away without notice. Great...

I recently purchased songs from my iphone.  All good...  But I then went to put them on my ipod touch.  They seemed to have downloaded but the songs wont play and the song title/the text, appears in a grey colour and there is a downlaod symbol in front of the song title.  what do i do next??  They play on my iphone and from the itunes library but not from my ipod touch.

If the songs are still on your ipod, make sure autosync is disabled in iTunes on your computer, connect and right click on it in the device list, then choose "transfer purchases" to copy all bought media and apps from your ipod to your computer.
If the songs are not on your computer and got deleted from your ipod as well, you can't get them back, unless you have a backup of your iTunes library as part of your computer backup.

  • My Ipod Touch Was dropped and screen is broken. How can I get It Fixed? I cannot Unlock the Ipod Touch, all I can do is play Music and Change Songs.

I Dropped My Ipod Gen 4 on a Granite Floor and it Spider webbed. Now all I can do is Play songs and change songs from the lock screen. I cannot unlock the Ipod or do anything else. Is there any way for me to get it fixed Cheap???

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for $199 for 64 GB 4G and $99 for the other 4Gs. They do not fix yours.

  • Ipod touch is skipping and changing songs on its own

My ipod  touch skips like a scratched cd and changes songs on its own when i am outside with it.  I usually take it to the pool and listen while i'm laying out but recently it started doing this.  I don't let sunlight hit it directly i have it covered by my leg or a towel.  When i come home it starts working again.  Is this a common problem and i cannot take it outside when it is hot, or do i have a defective one?

    - Do you have the headphones with a remote? Sometime there is problems with sporatic signals from the remote especially with moisture/high humidity.
    - Try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod
If still problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • ITunes is changing song titles and artists

iTunes appears to be infrequently and randomly changing the artist and song title tags of music in my library.  I usually just put my music on random shuffle, so it can take me a long time to actually identify errors -- like when I listen to music from a particular artist, or when I happen to glance at iTunes when a song iTunes has mis-re-named is playing.  So far, the errors seem to confined within single albums at a time, but that might just be because of the circumstances of me identifying the errors.
In the first case I noticed a while back, an album with six songs had their titles all jumbled up.  Each song was titled with an incorrect song title from the same album.  The artist, album, and genre tags all remained correct.  In the most recent case, two songs from a compilation album had their artist and song title tags overwritten with the info from a third track on the same album (so I ended up with three songs with the same title and artist).
Any idea what might be causing this apart from a crappy coding?

If iTunes and WMP are referencing the same copy of the MP3, then a tag change in one will be reflected in the other. If that is not what you want, you will need separate copies of the song.
Being picky, iTunes will write it's changes to the tag immediately (unless the file is locked as read-only) whereas WMP may choose to do it at some later point in time unless you use an option to "Apply media information changes". WMP will generally notice automatically that another appliation has modified the tag and updates it's library accordingly whereas iTunes only spots the change if it accesses the tag for some reason.
If you want WMP & iTunes to play nicely together you are best off disabling the WMP options for "Rearrange music in the rip folder..." and "Automatic media information update..." (you can still do so manually). I also find it best to change the WMP rip folder to the same as the iTunes Music folder. Letting iTunes "Keep the music folder organised" is a matter of choice (I choose not) but at least WMP can cope if your files get shuffled around by iTunes whereas the reverse is not the case.

  • ITunes Changes Song Titles When I drop Them In a Playlist

I am using ITunes 10.2.1 When I drag a song to a playlist if there are numbers in the title iTunes deletes the numbers ex. "1. MySong" becomes "Mysong".  I like the numbers in there to keep track of the song order visually.  How do I fix this?

I have the same problem. Also, I don't want to store everything in a Artist / Album folder/directory, but in what is for classical music more logical: Composer / Album / Artist (= orchestra & conductor or soloist or the like). But also keep in mind that some characters are not allowed in naming a Windows-folder or filename. These characters are: \ / : * ? " | This is typical for any Windows-version (even Windows 7 32bit or 64bit). When you use these characters in iTunes, they will be changed in a '_'. E.g.: Bach: Matthaüspassion in iTunes will be in the Windows folder Bach_ Matthäuspassion.
Also, the total lenght of a filename in Windows (any Windows-version) is max. 256 characters, including folders and subfolders. So, even you change iTunes for another program for ripping and organizing your music like Mediamonkey, these limitations stand. Mediamonkey is not truncating the filenames into a maximum of 32 characters. iTunes has nevertheless the advantage using the CDDB-Gracenote database for its metadata and not FreeDB like the most of the other music library organizers. Although far from perfect, the Gracenote metadata are much more consistent for classical music than the FreeDB metadata. FreeDB is good for modern music, but it's crap for classical music. Less known alternatives like MusicBrainz are also rather consistent, but are too small. To give an idea: Gracenote and FreeDB have both metadata of more than 90 million cd's. MusicBrainz has only 8 million.

  • ITunes - how do I change the title of a song?

When I copied some tracks from a CD onto iTunes, the name of the song did not appear correctly such that The Verve's 'The drugs don't work' was added as 'Nutbush city limits'. How can I change this? I have tried editing the file at source but it does not change in the iTunes library!
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

Do not mess with anything in the iTunes Music folder or else iTunes will lose the music.
Edit the song info using iTunes.

  • Changing song titles

When you change a song title of a saved project file in finder, does it automatically change the title in the drop-down window that appears after clicking on "Open an existing file" (When opening GB)
and does it also change the title on the top of the GB screen of that particular song?

When you change a song title of a saved project file in finder, does it automatically change the title in the drop-down window that appears after clicking on "Open an existing file" (When opening GB)
Yes, because that button takes you to an Open dialog that reflects the latest changes of the Finder.
... and does it also change the title on the top of the GB screen of that particular song?
Yes, because this window bar shows the name of the file.
You can even change the name of your song in the Finder while it's open, and the GB window will reflect that change. When you save, GB will alert you of the name change and ask if you really want to save it under the new name.

  • ITunes doesn't recognize ripped song titles

When I rip songs from commercial CDs (not copied ones), the songs' titles are not recognized and so are not listed except as Track one, two, etc.  No artwork.  Why? all software up to date and this has happened only recently.

Select these songs in iTunes, right click - Get CD track names.
    iTunes prefs > Advanced.
    Tick Get CD track names.
This will get CD track names for any more CDs you use.

  • ITunes starts automatically and plays songs

The last couple of months I have noticed whenever I first start up my iMac; within a few minutes iTunes will launch and start playing the first song in my library. If I quit iTunes, it will restart again in a few seconds. I have also noticed when this is happening that the built in microphone does not work properly with Skype. If I restart my computer; it seems to fix the problem but does anyone know how to stop it from happening in the first place? Thanks for your help.

I agree with/have same problem as vinfromacton.
I know it's Flash causing the problem:iTunes had been functioning normally until this morning when I downloaded Flashto allow me to listen to archived radio programs on the internet.
Once I downloaded Flash, iTunes startedopening and playing automatically ~ every 2-3 minutes. Annoying as it playsover audio I am listening to &/or recording.
Only fix I've found is to turn iTunesvolume down to zero: does not stop iTunes from opening - it continues to do so- but I don't hear the iTunes audio.
I'm also going to try dr alexander'ssuggestion: Open a blank Playlist > leave iTunes focus there>quit iTunes.
It reopens but at least it'ssilenced....
Haven't tried it but I would imagine uninstallingFlash (need to download the uninstaller from the Adobe website) would solve theproblem. This however would lead me back to my original problem: no Flash >cannot listen to audio archived on the internet and other internet audio...
I'm also going to call Apple: I haveAppleCare. Will re-post after talking to them.

  • Working with a projector file. How can center it, not allow scaling and change the title bar?

    I've tried using:
    import flash.system.fscommand;
    fscommand("allowscale", "false");
    fscommand("showmenu", "false");
    fscommand("fullscreen", "false");
on frame 1, but they don't seem to work.  I'm going to be putting this project on a CD and the client wants to make sure it will open centered on the user's screen, which has not been the case so far.  It seems to open at different spots on different computers.
They also want the title bar changed from "Adobe Flash Player 10" to their own title.
Thanks in advance for the help.

You can use: stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE; As for the title bar change, you can change the title bar string using Resource Hacker. But i am not sure if that is legal. You will find the strings under the strings table.
What did you mean by, "You will find the strings under the strings table."?  Were you talking about Resource Hacker?

  • TS5181 My iTunes Radio doesn't show song name please help

My iTunes Radio doesn't show  song name what can I do

I suspect that the encoding of the Korean in the stream is not Unicode, which is what iTunes requires. iTunes cannot fix such things by itself.

  • Ipod nano keeps speaking song title, how do i stop this?

my ipod nano 6th gen keeps speaking the song title despite the hints being switched to off, any help would be appreciated.

First, double check and make sure that VoiceOver is off. Check in itunes by clicking the "Configue Universal Access" button and making sure all checkboxes are unchecked.
Then, on the Nano, navigate to the accessibility settings menu and make sure it is off there.
Finally, at the bottom of the settings menu is the "reset settings" option. Do that, then check again.
If after all this it is still doing it, restore the Nano in itunes.
If it is still doing it after that, it is likely that there is some moisture either in your buttons on the device or in the buttons on your headset (if it has them).
