Everytime i click on iTunes on my desktop (PC Windows), the user agreement window appears and i have to click on "Agree"... then this message appears:
"The iTunes Library.itl is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."
That's exactly what it says! I dont know what it means!!!

Same problem happened to me. Go to Music (on windows). Then to iTunes folder. Right click on "iTunes Library". Properties. Then click on security tab. Where it says "To change Permissions, click edit" Click Edit. Then under "Permissions for system" Check the box for Full Control ALLOW. Click Apply. Then run iTunes it should work.

I cannot get my itunes account to open - it says itunes library.itl is locked - i'm computer iliterate so everything i've read about deleting files or something I dont' understand. is there not an easier way!?

In Windows Explorer, right-click > Get Properties on that exHD itunes folder. Go to the Security tab and give your windows user ID full control and ownership. Make sure to check the box for child/subfolders to get those same permissions.

this may happen on external drives if:
The external drive was hotpluged (removed) without going the correct "eject" way
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
    First Aid for external drive
    Close iTunes
Unmount (eject) external drive the right way.
    Mount drive again
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up" This will force the filesystem to rescan the file structure of the drive and rebuilding the file system table and journaling file.
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive) restart iTunes
If your iTunes library is on your internal drive, this may happen
The system was not shoot down correct, e.g. "pulled the plug"
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted

    Close iTunes
    Reboot system

  • I cannot access iTunes on my desktop.  Works fine on my laptop.  Message says "The iTunes Library .itl is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission."  The disk is not locked.

I cannot access iTunes from my deskyop.  Worked great until a couple of days ago, then I now get the message that "The iTunes Library .itl is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."  I have not turned on any parental controls on the desktop.  I have reloaded iTunes several times.  No luck.  I've run virus scans several times.  No luck.  I've restarted & tuned off the computer several times.  No luck.  I've uninstalled iTunes then reinstalled several times.  No luck.  Any thoughts?

To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file.  Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty.  Note that I am running Windows 8.  Hope this helps!

  • The iTunes Library.itl is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.

I just had to reset my entire laptop to factory settings, therefore my original iTunes was erased, leaving my iPhone 4 no accessibility for new music. I had to download CopyTrans so that I could transfer all things on my iPhone 4 onto my new iTunes. It said it transfered properly, but when I try and open iTunes,"The iTunes Library.itl is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file." pops up. Please help.
    Thanks, Breanna

I just had the same problem and was able to fix it after trying a couple of things I found after a search.
The solution that worked for me:
Find iTunes folder - it should be in C:\Program FIles (x86) or similar depending on your operating system
Right click the entire folder (no need to open it) and click properties
    Click the security tab
Click edit and highlight the user name under which you logged in.
Click the box next to full in the allow column, which should check everything
    Click apply
    Open iTunes
    This worked for me.

i tried the other suggestions and i cant get rid of this message.
    can anyobdy help?

I had that problem too. I tried to remove iTunes from my computer and then download it again, but that did not make any difference. Then I tried polydorus' answer ("starting iTunes with the shift key held down, when asked to choose a library, navigate to your iTunes folder and choose iTunes Library.itl"), but that did not work either and that same message about the library being locked appeared again.
Then I had a brainwave. I deleted that iTunes library.itl file. (To find it, go to My documents, then My Music, then iTunes, and there is the itunes library file). I now tried to open iTunes by clicking on the iTunes icon on my desktop, nothing happened, as if I had not clicked on it at all. I restored the file from the recycling bin to where it was before. But that also returned me to where I had been before, i.e. I got that locked-library message again. So I deleted that file again. Then I tried right-clicking on the iTunes icon. On the little menu that appeared, I clicked 'Open' and hey presto, suddenly the iTunes set-up assistant appeared and everything went smooth from then on. When I checked, there was a file called iTunes library.itl again and this one worked OK.
By the way, I did not lose any of my music downloads or podcasts when I deleted that file, so it's definitely worth a try.

the itunes library .itl fileis locked on a locked disk, or you dont have the write permission for this file.  this is what it says every time i try and open itunes why ?

    Sounds like a permission issue.
Navigate to the iTunes Music Library.itl file
    The path should be Username/Music/iTunes/
Right click on the iTunes Library.itl and select Get Info
The window will open on the left hand side. Go to the Sharing and Permissions section at the bottom
Click the padlock to allow changes and enter your Mac logon password
Select yourself and make sure you have Read & Write selected. Click padlock to lock it again
Close the Get Info window and try and start iTunes

  • Cant Open iTunes - iTunes Library.itl is locked

Never had this problem and searched for fixing it but under properties Read Only is NOT checked on anything which was the problem for almost everybody that had my same problem. The error message I get when trying to open iTunes is "iTunes library.itl is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission". This problem occured after the latest upgrade to iTunes 10. To repeat - Read Only is NOT checked under properties.

To repeat - Read Only is NOT checked under properties
Make sure you have full Read/Write permissions to \Music\iTunes\ folder and all contents.

  • ITunes library .itl file locked.....what to do?

I just downloaded to the 7.4 iTunes and am now currently 'locked' out of iTunes completely. Admittedly, I'm not the most computer savvy but any sage advice would be appreciated.

When you tried opening iTunes while holding down the shift key to open a certain library, did you try opening the file in My Music>iTunes>Previous iTunes Libraries? There will be an .itl file in their with a date on it; it might be from whenever the last time you updated itunes was.
Another thing you could try is rebuilding your library from the .xml file - the instructions are on this page (but see my notes below): http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313
I have successfully done this, but I didn't have a 'locked' file, so I don't know for sure it will work for you. One thing I would suggest is don't actually trash the 'iTunes Library.itl' file until you get your library back. And when you open iTunes it will be completely blank, but don't panic. Also, it's probably going to take awhile, so just let iTunes do it's thing while it's importing.
When it's done you should see all your music files and playlists; you will probably lose all your playcounts and ratings though. If for some reason there are music files still missing try File>Add Folder to Library and add whatever folder(s) are missing.
If you don't get the library back please post again - maybe someone else will have another option.

I'm trying to reconnect to my itunes library on an external disk. I locate the disk, but when I try to open the file, I get a message that says the Itunes library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file. Has anyone seen this before?

    Hello,
Mark the folder / file and push command + i ,
At the end of the window there : Sharing and Permissions
Just click on the lock, Put password, and change Privilege to read & write .

  • The Itunes library.itl is locked.on a locked disk.or you do not have write premission for this file

Itune will no open. It says the itunes library it is locked

    Hey rogerky,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities! I found information about the iTunes "locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder" error message. Check out the following for a resolution:
Verify the location of your Windows XP My Music folder. The default location for this folder is
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music
If you do not have this folder at the default location and have not moved it to another location, consider creating one inside your My Documents folder.
Download and install Tweak UI from the Microsoft PowerToys website athttp://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx Note: This utility is for Windows XP only. Please review the system requirements before installing.
Once you have installed Tweak UI, open it from the Start menu.
In the column on the left, click on the plus symbol next to My Computer and select Special Folders
In the right pane under Special Folders, choose My Music from the Folder pop-up menu.
Click the Change Location button. You may see a warning message appear with precautions for changing this setting; after reviewing the message, click Yes.
In the resulting window, browse for the My Music folder as described in step 1, and click OK.
    Reinstall or open iTunes.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, the settings for the current user may be corrupted, which could cause iTunes not to install or open. You may have to install and open iTunes in a different Windows user account.
