Itunes and cd drive

when i put a cd in the disk drive, itunes won't recognize it and transfer it into the library. does anyone know what i need to do?

I had a similar problem and solution no. 3 at:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2308
fixed my problem.  I did not have the old GEAR drivers installed--I looked for them and they weren't there so I did not have to mess with the registry to delete them.
Here is what I did:
1) uninstall itunes
2) download and install the new Gear drivers from the link given in the above Apple document
3) download a new itunes installer (it WAS a slightly different size from the one 2 weeks ago, although claimed to be the same version, hmmmmm) and installed itunes anew
4)  everything worked fine
Good luck.

  • Upgrading itunes and disappearing drives

i could use some help, here is my problem :
after upgrading to any itunes version above 5.0 everything works exept windows and all of my burning programs(roxio--alchool120)do not recognise any burning drive.i have a cdrw internal burner and an external burner.none gets recognised.
when itunes first runs i tells me my config folder for the burning drives is empty please reinstall the drives.
should the external drive get installed again when i plug it in?why the new versions of itunes does this ?
so i use system restore to go back a day and everything works again, but the itunes version goes back too.
i hate ipods the only reason i do this is because of my son
ps:is there any way to get the ipod recognised by a old version of itunes?

ok this is the complete story (long version, will try to make it short)
holyday 2003 : install ipod itunes(ver 5?) everything works fine.
sometimes after don't know when my son updates to itunes (i believe 5.1?)and at the time after upgrading the i tunes worked but upon opening the itunes for the first time,
we had a message like this : itunes cannot find the registry settings to allow me to burn cds, please reinstall cds? .after that none of my burning programs had a default burnerand could not burn with any of it. so all freaked out i system restored to 2 days before. all my recording drives started working again and i told my son not to upgrade itunes anymore.
fast forword to few day ago: old ipod broke(hard drive gone) my son buys new ipod w/video from his friend. install ipod works with old itunes. complains because he cannot tansfer video to ipod with old itunes.swears the itunes is now to 6.0 and all bugs are now worked out.tries to upgrade itunes and bam.itunes don't work quicktime don't work all burning drives disappeared again.so much for all bugs worked out!after reverting to old itunes (i went crazy because itunes did not work ,had to clean out registry and install a stand alone version of quick time)now i have officially given up to upgrading itunes!
the old itunes now works with the new ipod but he has no way to tranfer video to it.
i tank you for your kindness in answering me but my only other question is:
is there any other program that let's you transfer videos(any file for that matter) to ipod?
and why can't mac people make the ipod appear and work like an external drive?
why can't we window users copy and paste a file directly into ipod?

  • ITunes and Pen Drive

on a windows xp home pc, somehow an iTunes folder was created ( drive j ) how itunes will not start unless that pen drive is in, i have uninstalled and reinsatlled ( reinstalling itunes still wanted then pen drive in!!!! HUH ).
So i uninstalled again, gone into regedit and removed as many references of drive j that related to itunes, and STILL itunes will not start without the pen drive, i have told itunes to look at drive k ( K:/my music/itunes ) drive k being a 300gb maxtor external drive, and still itunes wants the pen drive ( drive j ) present before it starts... otherthan formatting and reinsatlling windows xp, what else can i do... also click RESET in iTunes->Edit->Advanced and it resets to Drive J ( j:/my musiuc/itunes ) stumped, must be something still lurking in system reg, just can not see it, any ideas????
    Thanks

When re-installing iTunes we get the error message "Invaild Drive J: " ( or something similar ).
yeah, you've got a drive letter confusion going on, as per this MS article:
New drive or mapped network drive not available in Windows Explorer
what is happening: when the pen drive is unplugged, the drive letters change on your system. when that happens, your registry is looking for the "My Music" folder on the wrong drive (or in some cases the My Music folder has ended up on the removable drive, and isn't there to find when the drive is removed.)
ditto with the installation issue. when the pen drive is out, the registry is looking for the program files on the wrong drive ... and folks get either the 1327 you're getting:
    Error 1327 Invalid Drive
    ... or a 1324, or most commonly a 1325.
the easiest way to fix this.
first, with the pen drive plugged in, launch your Disk Management. right-click "My Computer", select "Manage", click "Disk Management".
make a note of the drive letter that is showing for the drive that has your "My Music" folder on it, and make a note of the drive letter of the drive that has your itunes program files on it.
now close out of Disk Management, unplug the pen drive, and launch Disk Management again. change the letter of the drive that has your My Music folder on it to what it was when the pen drive was in. change the drive letter of the drive with the itunes program files to the what it was when the pen drive was in.
there's instructions on how to change drive letters in this document:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear
(although that article is on changing ipod drive letters, the same techniques apply to other drives.)
now try launching iTunes with the pen drive out. does it launch now?

  • How to delete songs on itunes and hard drive at the same time?

hi guys. i have been looking around the forum and simply couldnt find and answer to my problem. when i delete a song from my itunes library it only deletes the song on itunes, and not from my harddrive. all my songs is allready in the itunes media folder. when deleting a song itunes gives me the option of Keeping the File or Deleting it From the Hard Disk, i always choose to delete from the hard disk as well but it is still in the itunes media folder.

To remove file from iPhoto and the HD simply put the files in the iPhoto trash and then go iPhoto Menu -> Empty trash.
This works if you're using iPhoto in the default setting, where the files are copied to the Library on import. If, however, you have a referenced library, you'll need to trash the files in your own folder structure yourself.

  • Problem with iTunes and external drive

I moved my files to an external hard drive months ago but apparently forgot to uncheck the auto synch button.  It seems that I just managed to copy them all back to my computer hard drive where I now only have 6gb.  Since I originally moved the files I have put some movies and a little music on the computer and have iPad files in the mix.  How to I get it all synched so that I know I have everything and then delete it from my hard drive?
I then would like to add some new CDs to the IPod, but do not want them stored on my computer drive, just external drive.
Please feel free to treat me like I am clueless because I am.  Once I burned my entire Cd collection and moved it I have not done anything else with iTunes except buy the occasional app.
Thanks in advance for the help.
I was trying to follow directions on another post which did not seem to fit so I began trying random things.  Very bad idea!

  • I have Windows 7, 64 bit, and I am using iTunes 11.0.1.12. I have been all through the threads and internet..how do I delete songs from my iTunes and hard drive at the same time? I have my music in the correct iTunes folder. Nothing works.

    Windows 7 64 bit
    iTunes 11.0.1.12
I have my music in the correct iTunes folder
In iTunes, I select songs, click "delete", then "move to recycle bin", finally, empty my recycle bin that shows the file is there
File is still on my hard drive.
I just want to be able to delete files out of my library and off of my hard drive at the same time. I have tried everything I have read, and there really seems to be no real answer. Somebody please help!

i do, but like i said it fell once and since then it hasn't been able to connect to my laptop. it acts like nothing's connected. i believe if i call the company the HDD is from they'll be able to transfer it to a new one but who knows how much they'd charge. looks like i have no choice now.
If it were truly a backup, then the media would play on the laptop as it would be on the laptop.
Sounds like you actually do not have a backup, instead you chose to keep your media on an external drive.
Regardless of where the media is stored, it's always a good idea to have a backup for instances like this.

  • Itunes and usb drive

i got a new computer and i want to transfer all my music using a usb drive but once i plug the flash drive into my new computer, i can transfer all that music to itunes, but i can't seem to save it or get it to stay on itunes since when i disconnect that usb flash drive, it obviously can't locate those song files anymore.

Make sure under Advanced tab in iTunes>Preferences, +Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library+ is checked. Good luck!

  • Difference between Itunes and Hard drive ..?

    Hi
I'm using Itunes 9 and my music (aiff) is on an external hard drive
I can see 290 GO on the bottom of the Itunes windows and my music folder on the hard drive says 320 GO ! why this difference ? ( I rebuilt the libraries recently)
It is the same with an other new session for the mp3 placed on the internal hard drive. Always a difference..

  • Problem with iTunes and Hard Drive

I'm not sure if anyone else is having this problem but I haven't had it up until this morning. I was putting songs onto my iPod (It's set to manual manage) and I would drop and drag and go look for a new song but when I brought the folder up it would tell me that the previous songs file destination couldn't be found, and it was deleted from my Music Folder however when I went to click on the song to get it's information the file destination would say it was in it's original spot I'm not sure what to do since I've never had this problem before and I don't think it's my Ipod I think it's something either with iTunes or my Computer and I can' figure out which.
Any more questions let me know and any help would be great!
    Thanks!!

  • Remove songs from itunes and disk drive

i have a bunch of songs that i rated as 1 star and now i would like to completely remove it from my itunes Music library AND from my hard disk. i read somewhere here that you can just simply 'delete' the song from the Music library and it will also remove the song from the physical location or it would ask you if you want to remove it from the physical location.. that didn't happen when i tried it. anyone know of another way?

Do you keep your songs in the iTunes Music folder or do you use another folder of your own making? iTunes will delete songs from the library and move them to Trash (Recycle Bin) only if they are in the iTunes Music folder. (iTunes will ask if you want to trash the file if this is the case, it doesn't trash it automatically). If your songs are kept outside of this folder then deleting only removes the reference to the song from the library and you have to go to the folder they are located in to trash the file itself:

  • ITunes makes DVD drive disappear

I installed iTunes for the first time on my machine after getting an iPod Touch. The next day I discovered my DVD drive icon was missing from the Computer window. I assumed it was because of iTunes since that was the only that had changed. I tried restarting my machine, no good. I uninstalled iTunes and my drive was back. I re-installed and uninstalled several times along with updating the DVD drivers, no difference in the outcome. I would like to be able to use iTunes. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The problem is caused by "filters" in the registry.
iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting CD issues caused by device filters
The registry is a dark and dangerous place. It's easy to mess Windows up by making changes in there. If you are not familiar with registry surgery, read about it first. Start here.
What is the registry? - What is Registry Editor? - Back up the registry
Then read in the Help section of Registry Editor (regedit.exe).
Be sure to export keys prior to modifying them.

  • Erasing all music from iTunes and starting over from an external hard drive

    Hello,
I tried moving all my media to an external hard drive to make room on my MacBook Pro and just be able to run the media (ie music movies etc) from the external hard drive when it was connected.
Well this backfired big time probably because I did not follow any sort of instructions.
1st I backed up Finder > music > iTunes > iTunesMedia folder to two seperate external hard drives just in case.
2nd I think (this was back in March 2013) I decided to cut/delete the folder Automatically Add to iTunes and moved it to one of my external hard drives (this folder for some reason contained mostly everythiing that was in the iTunes Media folder).
3rd I finally decided to erase content from iTunes Media Folder
4th I deleted the iTunes Media folder because I felt it was stupid to have a "iTunes Media folder" and "iTunes Music Folder" in the same place but not actually have anything in the iTunes Music folder (probably really stupid of me in retrospect)
5th I unchecked the box under iTunes > Preferences > Advanced "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library"
6th I believe I changed the location of "iTunes Media folder location" in the Advanced area under Preferences thinking this should be pointing to my external drive
I then believe I tried to run iTunes and play my content, but when I did all it did was copy my music/media back to my MacBook Pro hard drive but I did not realize it was doing this until later the next day when I tried to play some music and realized I had 3 copies of everything in my iTunes program (ie music movies podcasts tv shows etc) however, I could play all three versions of whatever it was I selected there was no "error message" saying that iTunes could not located that file, would you like to try and locate.
So I checked Finder to see if there were 3 copies of everything (by the way at this point I stopped connecting my external hard drive for the sake of making more copies on iTunes) but there wasn't??? So I tried to go through Option+View > Show Exact Duplicate Copies and delete all but one of the items. When I would delete them and it asked if I wanted to move them to my Trash Bin I clicked yes and all the 2nd and 3rd copies were gone!!! Yeah, so when I played those songs/movies that remained they would play!!!!!
Than I realized that my Internal Hard Drive was almost full and went looking around for things I could delete to help make my MacBook run better, and realized that my Trash had a large amount of data in it and that emptying it would significantly reduce space on my Internal Hard Drive, but when I went back to iTunes and selected music or movies to play it placed the infamous "!" next to that track or movie and it could not locate those items anymore?
Long long long story short hopefully, can anyone help me set up iTunes so that it only can play content/media off of my external drive and not take up space on my internal hard drive? Is this even possible to do that or will always start to copy those files from the external hard drive back onto the internal hard drive? and second is there anyway to use the Apple router external hard drive to use as the source for all my media?
PS I am running Mac OS X Lion version 10.7.5 and iTunes 11.1.3 (8) 64-bit

    Quit iTunes.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to the external. Don't only copy the iTunes media folder.
Hold Option, launch iTunes, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
This is all you need to do.
Everything for iTunes (except the application) is on the external.

Make a shortcut to this folder on your desktop.
Nothing should be in this folder. When you put a file here, it will get moved by iTunes and added to the library.
The reason it had files in it is because you moved it.

    Hello ryane84
The easiest and most efficient way to copy your music is to follow the steps under the External drive section. Make sure that you have organized the iTunes library first before you copy it over. Then put the copied iTunes folder in the same Music folder on your computer.

I have itunes directory on an external hard drive and want to direct a new installation of itunes on windows 8 to use it. I tried holding down ctrl and clicking itunes and after many tries got it to work one time. When I went back in later it had reverted back to a blank version of itunes and I cant get ctrl to work again. Any other ideas?

This is sometimes caused by a problem with the iTunesPrefs.xml file, normally found at C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml. Try dragging this to the desktop and trying again.
Alternatively the problem may be that you have McAfee AV and it is preventing iTunes from updating the same file and thus causing the problem. See Why does iTunes delete my itunesprefs.xml? for details.
