ITunes and Computer freeze when connecting 160GB iPod classic

160 GB iPod Classic
Model: MC293LL
Version: 2.0.4 PC
iTunes version: 11.1.3
computers: 1 Win8 desktop,
1 Win7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1 Notebook
since yesterday I started having trouble with my iPod. When connecting it to the Notebook it showed a message: "There's a problem with this device. Scan the drive now and fix it". After clicking on scan and trying to fix the problem the notebook froze, so I connected it to me desktop, and it worked, it said that the problem was fixed. But when trying to open the iTunes it froze and after disconnecting it I realised the music was gone. So I connected it again, the same "There's a problem with this device. Scan the drive now and fix it"-message showed, but at the end the computer said it didn't detect any problem with the drive, so I opened iTunes and restored the iPod, and it worked but after that iTunes froze, then Windows Explorer and then the whole computer. Tried to connect the iPod to the Win7 Notebook and the same thing happened, first iTunes froze and then the computer froze, they both didn't show the blue screen.
What can I do? The iPod was already restored to the factory settings.

i had the same problem. all i did was download the newest version of itunes, which i had been putting off for months because it takes so long. after i did this itunes worked fine for me
hope this helps

  • ITunes and Computer freezes when ipod is connected

When I connect my video ipod to my computer (dell desktop) the system freezes, as in it will not respond to mouse clicks and keyboard (but can still get to task manager). When I unplug the ipod it comes back to life. Programs always freeze, but sometimes I am able to navigate within windows without it freezing, but as soon as a program is brought up, my computer falls to its knees.
I have the latest version of iTunes, and updater v. 1.1, (but I have not been able to update the firmware yet from v 1.0).
The odd thing is last night I was able to download several gigs worth of music to it without incident. I then tried to load movies (they were in the wrong format, but I didn't know it at the time), and so in an effort to correct that I uninstalled itunes, the ipod drivers, and the ipod updater programs several times.
I cannot update the ipod firmware because the computer freezes when the ipod is plugged in, so the program freezes as well. Kind of a catch 22 situation.
I have been over the forums and help archives for about an hour and a half now and I have come up dry.
Windows XP does recognize the ipod when the cable is connected, and the ipod flashes, "Do not disconnect", which it is supposed to do.
I suspect this is drivers/software, but I have no idea where to go from here.
    Help?

    Hey!
That EXACT thing happened to me! 2 nights ago I'm downloading like crazy, all is well. I got on LimeWire and downloaded some videos and tried to put them on my iPod. Imported them into iTunes then tried to put em on my iPod and it completely wiped out all my songs! So I get back on, put the songs back in, and about half way through the update the thing freezes. I've re-installed everything, and have reset my iPod. Did you figure out what to do? Maybe your fix will fix my problem, too.
    Thank you!

  • Macbook Pro Freezes When Connected to iPod Classic!

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro that is acting a little funky. Whenever I plug in my iPod Classic to add music everything works perfectly fine until I eject the iPod. My computer then basically freezes up (gives the rainbow spinwheel of death) and it will not recover. The iPod icon doesn't disappear, it just turns light grey and everytime my only option is to force quit iTunes. The problem doesn't end there, my computer is completely bogged down and I have to force shut it down. It is incredibly annoying... The iPod works perfectly fine when I plug it into my fiancee's older Macbook Pro, it ejects fine and I've run disk utility on it using that computer and there are no problems with the iPod. My mid 2010 Macbook Pro runs other USB devices just fine (iPhone, iPad, Flash Drives etc.) it's just the iPod.
Additionally, every since I upgraded to OS X 10.7 the computer will not shut down/restart. It just goes to a grey screen with a spinny wheel and won't fully shut down (I've left it over night to no success still grey screen). I have reinstalled OS X several times so I'm confused on this one as well. Any information on either of these issues would be greatly GREATLY appreciated.

I should add that I can quit iTunes with the iPod connected. When I try to eject the iPod by manually dragging the icon to the trash the funkiness begins (icon doesn't disappear just turns light grey, and the computer freezes). I have found the computer behaves if I put it to sleep with the iPod connected (the iPod will eject properly) and when I wake the computer up, everything works w/o funkiness, however the greyed out iPod icon will still be on the desktop. This is the only way I've found to be able to manage this iPod when connected to this MBP.

  • ITunes and computer freezes when syncing

My iPod and iTunes work fine separately, but when I sync my iPod, it'll sync a couple songs/photos/videos and then suddenly freeze which freezes my entire task bar. I use windows vista and itunes 7.6.1 and I haven't had this problem before.. What's the deal?

I have this exact same problem and cannot figure out a solution to it. It has happened twice to me.
First time it happened was around Christmas. All of a sudden, I could not sync the iPod any more as my system froze when attempting to do so. iPod and iTunes worked fine apart. I dug through the whole system and could never get it to work. The only thing that I could do was to move everything to a different box. I lost all of my history in doing that, though.
Now, in the past couple of days, the same issue has started again on the 2nd box. I've reinstalled iTunes, I've started everything with a base config (only required system services running), I've tried old iTunes libraries...nothing works, it still syncs for a bit and then everything freezes. I enabled disk use and then ran a disk check on the iPod. It found some errors and corrected them. I guess I could erase the iPode to factory standards and then try syncing again, but I did this when the issue occurred the first time and it didn't solve the problem.
Any insight anyone can give into this issue would be greatly appreciated.

  • Computer is crashing (freeze) when connecting my iPod Nano

    Hello,
my computer is crashing (freeze) when connecting my iPod Nano. I have a Pentium IV with windows XP Pro. Can anybody help me please.

This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.

    Similar problem here:
When I'm playing songs with iTunes and connecting my 3G 20GB iPod, my computer will hang up completely - screen goes dark and I have to reset my PC.
However, when my iTunes is "idle", i.e. not playing a song or doing anything else, connecting and syncing the iPod will work just fine.
I'm using the newest (6.x) Version of iTunes on WinXP SP2 with a 3G iPod 20GB.

  • What version of iTunes should I use for my 160gb iPod classic with a 2.0.1 software?

I have a 160gb iPod classic with a 2.0.1 software. I just had my laptop fixed and I downloaded the new iTunes but I can't sync my iPod. I think this is because it's not compatible with each other (am i right?) Well, anyway, I need to know what verstion of iTunes to use so that I can sync again on my iPod. Thank you!

    hi PT the devil advocate,
    The first reason why I'm suggesting this is because of the first question ask in this post;
    sphericalcamel wrote:
I updated iTunes to whatever is current through software update, but when I tried to run it I was informed that it needed 10.4.9 to run (and for some reason software update didn't pick up that requirement).
The second reason, is because you will not receive full support on older software version. Like said above, you cannot buy song with an older iTunes version.
Beside, I said in a previous reply of this post that this is my personal preference to keep software up-to-date and that _I do understand_ that other person could prefer to stick with software version that have been proven to work well and not update. Having say this, I do not beleive that you need to play the devil's advocate here.
Nevertheless, this is normally suggested to keep software up-to-date in order to prevent either security issue (lot of updates are for improving security) and also for bugs issue. I'm not suggesting to buy Leopard here. I'm only saying that 10.4.2 is out-dated by 9 version which are free upgrade and that at version 11, 10.4 should be quite mature now for all computer.
For me, based on this, I do not see any reason why someone should not be running previous version than 10.4.11. If there is sleeping bugs running 10.4.3 and not 10.4.2, I'm suggesting to adress this issue instead because _there must be a solution to this_.
In order to solve the issue, I'm just suggesting to post it on Tiger forum.

  • ITunes 10.1 freezing when connecting my new ipod touch

    Hi,
I recently bought an ipod touch 4th generation and downloaded the latest itunes software (10.1). Once i connect the ipod to the usb port itunes automatically opens but then freezes. The ipod is visible on my disc drive and but then the itunes is unresponsive. I have to use task manager to close itunes then. itunes works perfectly when the ipod is disconnected again.
I am using a windows vista 32 bit OS. I tried the same in my friends system with windows vista OS and the same thing is happening.
But when i connect the ipod in a system with windows 7 64 bit OS there is no problem whatsoever. What could be causing this conflict with the Vista?

Connect the iPod to iTunes. Select your iPod in the left sidebar under Devices. The main iTunes window will show the Summary tab about the device. Go thru all the tabs and select what you want to sync with the iPod. Click Sync.
BTW, if you want to see in iTunes what's on your iPod, click the disclosure triangle next to your iPod in the Devices list.
BBTW, did it ever occure to you to check Apple web site and read up (or view video tutorials) about how to use the iPod and iTunes?

  • Computer freezes when connecting ipod

I have an ipod classic. I wanted to updated it with  music and tried to sync it but it wouldn't sync. After several attempts I decided to Restore it. It deleted all the files on my ipod.
Now it's not letting me sync it and everytime I plug the ipod into my laptop it freezes.
I tried rebooting the ipod and it doesn't make any difference.
I also updated my preferences with manual syncing and that didn't help.
I also opened my computer folder and tried to right click the ipod under devices and it just stays there thinking, nothing happens. Its frozen.

    Need more info to help
How big is your iTunes library?
Which version of iTunes are you using?
What is the iPod software as shown in the iTunes summary page?
Can you do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but help in troubleshooting.

    - You will never get a proven solution since there are many many causes of your problems.  Wait, there is a proven solution.  Puchase a new Mac and a new iPod.
    - Try here fore the iTunes problem.  It includes a link for XP
iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues
    - For the iPod problem all yu can do is:
    - A reset. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore the iPod from backup
    - Restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • Just installed iTunes and it freezes when I open it

I just downloaded the current version of iTunes (4-8-09). when I open the program it just freezes. I use Firefox as my default browser. WMP has always been my default music player although during the installation i checked the box for iTunes to be the default. I also have Real Player installed (but I never use it). is there any reason iTunes freezes with these conditions? I am so lost. I have already uninstalled it and re-downloaded and re-installed it twice just to be sure I had a good file. PLEASE help me!

  • Blue screen when connecting my iPod Classic to Windows7

    Hi!
I know there are lots of these problems round here, but none of them actually seemed to apply to my situation nor did the advices seem to have helped me.
    Here's the thing:
A few days ago while synching my iPod Classic with iTunes, it just crashed. I mean it stopped syncing but wouldn't eject. I got angry and just unplugged my iPod (I'm an idiot, I know) . After that, I tried to synch it again but i would just plug it in, click 'sync' and nothing would happen . For less than a second it would sync but nothing would actually happen. I decided to reboot my iPod. That's where real trouble started. After clicking "Reboot..." my laptop just crashed and blue screen popped up. Every time i plug my iPod while iTunes is on, the same thing happens - blue screen. I already checked my drivers, they're all updated.
Here's what it says when the blue screen pops up:
    Technical information:
    *** STOP: 0x00000034  (0x00000000000000AB6, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000420, 0x0000000000000000, 0x00000000000000000)
I'm going to the seaside in a couple of days and I desperately need my iPod.
Would be very grateful for any kind of help and feedback .
    EDIT:
Oh, I forgot to add. I also checked my laptop's memory, it wouldn't detect any problems. Also, when i plug in my iPhone, everything works just fine.

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities
This seems to be more of an issue with Windows than with iTunes or the iPod. I would suggest scrubbing it for malicious software or seek out a professional.
