ITunes and contextual menu bug

Can anyone verify this?
If I use my Mighty Mouse to right-click on a track in iTunes either the menu selection (e.g. 'get info') has no effect (4.9) or iTunes crashes (5.0 and 5.0.1).
The same thing happens if I control-click, so not just a Mighty Mouse thing.
I thought it might be fixed in yesterday's update but it wasn't.

Raymond hello,
Your problem indicates that you do not have the ownership and or permission set right on your Music library and or the data files.. you may also have locked files to contend with.... Do this..
Check that your HD is in order with 'Disk Utility' ...
Run repair HD from original CD or DVD install disk...
insert disk and re-start holding down the 'c' key until you see the spinning gear.
At installer level do not continue...
Use top menu and go 'Disk Utility' select your HD volume with the Operating system on...
select 1st aid... select repair Hard Disk.
if errors are repaired run again until none are reported then verify your HD.
quit and return to the Finder Do not continue with the Installer...
Check the permissions are set correct on the Apple installed software...
Use 'Disk Utility' from Applications > Utilities > select HD... select 1st aid. repair permissions... if repairs are needed run again until none are repaired... do not worry about messages 'we are using special permissions etc... they are OK Quit when finished.
Use BatChmod to set correct permissions on your home ~ Music folder
To set preferences using BatChmod is very easy...
This compact GUI will perform the same tasks as a 'command line in Terminal '
drag the complete Music folder
with libraries and iTunes Music folder inside to the BatChmod Icon and drop....
check path is correct.... tick if not already.... Owner=R W X, Group=R, Others=R,
then tick 'Apply ownership and priviledges'...'Unlock' & click Apply...
provide password... all done very quick...
come back and report the results Raymond .... TP

  • Contextual menu bug

I think Leopard is full of bugs. Here is something I've tried to figure out without any luck and is hoping that someone have an intelligent answer for this.
This is the problem; when I e.g. right click an .html file and choose "open with" many of the apps are listed with several versions. And the really weird part is that it is not consistently. The contextual menu is different from each .html file. This problem goes for a lot of different file types. If anyone bother to have look at some pictures to see what I'm talking about, their here: http://home.no.net/pixelmix/htmlopenwith01.jpg. It's four pictures so just change the 01 to 02, etc.. By the way, I'm using a Norwegian edition of Leopard.
To save you all some time: I do not have several versions installed of the apps in subject.
So, that's that. Anyone with a clever mind out there? I would really appreciate an answer.
    Thanks!

You can clean up the "open with" menu by running the following command in the terminal:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
All old application versions will disappear from the "open with" menu.

  • Dictionary Contextual Menu Bug from within Preview or Skim

Seems like there is a bug with the way 10.5 handles pdf's and the contextual dictionary menu item. Highlighting a word and selecting the 'Lookup in Dictionary' contextual menu item seems to be unreliable at best. Most of the time, this feature refuses to work in either Preview.app or Skim. Any ideas? BTW i currently use Dictionary with both the standard Oxford dictionary and Wikipedia functions.

The "Mail Document" option in preview works fine for me...dunno what the problem could be, but perhaps if you removed the preferences file for preview from your "~/Library/Preferences/" folder, that might help resolve it. Faulty preferences files are causing folks a lot of application misbehaviors.

  • Installed 10.2.8 and contextual menu doedn't work

    Hi all,
I install 10.2.8 on two iMacs and options in the contextual menu in the Finder are not displaying anymore except the arrows e.g "open with" arrow or the arrow to scroll a long list of options. Has anybody got any ideas what I could do?

    HI Donny,
I haven't had a chance to come back to this computer till now. I reinstalled the Mac OSX 10.2.8 update, I had forgotten that you said to install the Combo version. Only change I have noticed is that the "Open with" arrow on the the contextual menu appears and displays the names of applications when clicked but the actual contextual menu still hasn't any text.
I am getting this strange read out in Disk Utility and if I remember correctly 10.2 should not be displaying all for this but I think only the line with "New Permissions". Would you have a look through it & see do you recognise anything there. I will give the Combo update an install and report back.
    Thanks again,
    Fiachra.

  • I just updated my Apple TV software and now I can't get to iTunes and the menu keeps going back to basic menu.  Software update fail!

Updated my software when prompted three days ago and as soon as the update was finished the basic screen came up with main menu.  However, when I selected "Podcasts", "TV" or "Movies" the screen goes black and the same home screen comes up again.  The only things that work are HuluPlus and Netflix and all non-iTunes icons.  I can't buy anything from the iStore so if Apple wants me to keep iShopping at the iStore and take my iMoney you might want to make a patch available quickly.

I just did the update to version 5.2 on our ATV2 and now I'm having the exact same problem as the OP- all attempts to access any iTunes services i.e. Movies or TV result in dropping back to the ATV Main menu.   Per Winston's suggestion, I logged out of iTunes and then tried to log back in.  I am getting a message "the server is not responding- please try again later".
FWIW- all my non-iTunes services on the ATV are working fine- i.e. Netflix and YouTube.
Sounds like the update has overwhelmed the Apple servers.

  • Custom tuning menu, menu bar, and contextual menu transparency levels?

I'm not talking about simply toggling menu bar transparency (which you can already do in 10.5.5 using System Preferences), but I'd like having the chance to tune transparency level for different objects.
Is there any way to tune:
    1) menu
    2) menu bar
    3) contextual menu
    transparency level?
(possibly individually for each of the three categories)
    This would be cool.

You can't - all the template navigation menus are not made to be changed.
If you want anything different, then you need to open the Inspector and go to Page and then check the box where it says 'hide navigation menu' and then you can build your own text based menu by using text boxes or shapes etc. and then use hyperlink to link to your pages. In this way you have full control over colour and placement.
The template navigation menus were not made to be changed.

  • Dropbox and contextual menu

Dropbox has added itself to my contextual menu. Does this mean Dropbox can access my system? Can it install dark software? Why does Dropbox not have to ask permission to modify my system?
This is very confusing to me.

I guess I wasn't clar: Dropbox changed mu finder behaviours, without even asking permissions. I taked wit Dropbox support; they don't know any way to undo it, other than uninstalling Dropbox.
If they can, without authorization, change my finder, what else could they change if the felt like?
For that matter, why couldn't every one of my 150+ applications decide to put itself, irrevocably, in my contextual menu?
    I find this inexcusible.

  • Missing mute from itunes dock contextual menu

    where'd it go?
    itunes 8 btw

here's the gist of the feedback i left apple in regards to the problem:
if one needed the volume muted in itunes to listen to something like an online news video feed, and then being able to unmute to continue using itunes, that functionality has been removed with the itunes 8 update. whatever audio action is being pushed out by itunes, has to be stopped, then restarted.
it was very easy to pause/mute itunes pre version 8 from the dock, to still have the audio function for other audio output.
using the keyboard to mute, mutes everything system wide. this is not ease of use/user friendly.
before itunes 8...i would have given itunes 7.x a 10.
    i gave them a 2

  • Bug or Feature? Array Custom Contextual Menu Destroys "Delete" and "Insert" Element!

    Step to Reproduce:
    - Create an Array (doesn't matter of what type).
    - Ctrl-M (to switch to Run Mode)
    - Notice that:
           - when you Right-Click on the Array borders, you have access to an "Empty Array" menu item among other things
           - when you Right-Click in an Array element, you have access to an "Insert Element Before" and a "Delete Element" menu item among other things
    - Now switch back to Edit Mode and modify the contextual menu in the following way:
            - Advanced>>Run-Time Shortcut Menu>>Edit...
            - Edit>>Copy Entire Menu
            - Switch to "Custom" menu (instead of "Default"): the menu disappears and is replaced by a single ??? item
            - Edit>>Paste: The default menu reappears with the ??? on top
            - Create you favorite custom menu item by editing the ??? item (say: Do Nothing)
    - Save the menu with the control and switch to Run Mode (Ctrl-M).
    - Now try the first 3 steps above: wherever you right-click, you have access to the Custom Menu, but the Array Element contextual menu is GONE.
In other words, you cannot (it seems) define a custom contextual menu for an array without destroying the default contextual menu for its elements.
Therefore, if you want to preserve the ability to Insert and Delete Elements in an array, you have to add these two items to the Array contextual menu and juggle with the position of the right-click to figure out whether or not to display them...

Well, I created in LabVIEW 2012 such a control and added part of the default menu in the way you described with copy-paste as a submenu to an Edit entry in my custom menu and it did not disappear:

  • HT202213 Have newest version of ITunes and a new AppleTV. ITunes File Home Sharing only shows option to turn off home sharing.  No home sharing icon and Apple TV claims home sharing is not turned on.  Where is this advanced menu?

Cannot get home sharing to work with my new apple TV.  Have the latest version of ITunes and the apple TV is connected to my wi-fi network.  The instruction page says to go to the Advanced menu option of ITunes and choose Home Sharing.  This option does not exist.  The closest I can find is under the File option>Home Sharing where my only option is to turn off home sharing.  There is no home sharing icon and Apple TV insist that the home sharing is not turned on.
I must be missing something obvious here.

  • ITunes 10.4 and Windows 7 bug thread

I thought I would start an entire thread devoted to iTunes 10.4 and Windows 7 bugs since there are MANY people reporting various issues and may not know about all of them. Hopefully this will combine a list of all bugs for reference and help others. So far, most of this effects Windows 7 64 bit, but some are reporting issues under 32 bit too.
I have spoken with both Apple Care and a higher level tech at iTunes support. The iTunes support tech said they were "looking into all reported bugs and are aware of issues with version 10.4, especially under Windows 7. They encourage others to report their bugs to iTunes support so they can work on this and find all the issues.
    KNOWN BUGS:
Album Art copy/paste broken - A bug that causes copy/pase from clipboard where album art is not displayed in the info tab as before. Some have reported success by dragging the image file over to it vs copy/paste method but it is still very much spotty and a known bug.
iTunes store not working - Some have been effected with the iTunes store not working properly for them. Personally I don't have a problem but this has been for some.
"Purchases" link not working in iTunes - When you click on "Purchases" link on the right column, all your purchases are missing and do not show up. This includes, music, movies, apps, etc. This is also a known bug and one that I have personally. Works fine in iTunes 10.3 for Windows 7 64bit and also works fine under both Snow Leopard and Lion OS.
Sync issues - Some have reported syncing issues since upgrading to 10.4 iTunes on Windows 7. This is a bit spotty as well as I have no trouble but there are others that have reported issues.
    Solutions:
For now, the only way to fix this is to use iTunes 10.4 under Snow Leopard or Lion OS. Also, you can uninstall (not repair) 10.4 and install 10.3 again which should work.

You are correct and I wish that I had known this before spending 4 days and a lot of trouble going over this with both Apple Care and iTunes support. They had me jumping through hoops and didn't know anything until it was finally escalated. Only then did I get a vague response like I mentioned in the first post. It's troubling to me how a simple response from anyone there could've just said we know about this and they are bugs in 10.4 causing this.
There are other issues too as you point out with the syncing and crashing. Anyway, hopefully others will find information here more useful than calling Apple for help. Not much we can do now except roll back to 10.3 for those that kept it and hope also they can updated Apple Application Support component.

I (though am not sure what happened) solved the problem. Under show all I had both videos and music selected as on. I turned off videos and ..hey presto..the slider reappeared.

If you have the horizontal menu bar showing (File, Edit, View,...), select View, then select Show Sidebar.
If the menu bar is not showing, dorp down the menu in the very upper left corner and select show menu bar, then follow steps above.
    Hope that helps.  Good luck.
