Itunes and external hardrives

I am working with an external hardrive (Mybook), and I tried dragging the itunes icon over, but it didn't copy it to the hardrive. Is there another process for getting these songs over to Mybook? I'm trying to free up space on my imac.
Thanks.

  • Help: itunes and external hard drive

I bought 2 TB Seagate external hard drive just so I can put all my music/movies/tv shows on it so I can free up space on the laptop. I followed these instructions from Apple's website... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364
What I've read was after the above was done I could hook up the external, hook up my iphone and I would be able to use itunes as I normally would b/c it was getting my music (& stuff) from the external but I could never do it. Last night everything kept giving me the exclamation point and saying it couldn't locate the file. I tried to load the music from the external to itunes so I did that in itunes with add file/folder to itunes and it duplicated a lot of my music BUT I was able to play some of the files. So I started deleting the exclamation point ones and this morning I was going pick up where I left off and it has been nothing but ****. Nothing would play and itunes kept not responding. So I uninstalled itunes (exactly how apple website said too) thinking and praying I might start from scratch b/c at this point I was boiling and I was done. So now after reinstalling itunes it is still not responding and nothing will play.
My hard drive still shows all the files but won't play.
I was simply trying to save space but simple is not what i've got!!!!!!
    Thanks- Megan

Windows is probably changing the drive letter of the exHD after you plug in the ipod. Isn't that nice, it can do that without telling you?
For instance you started ituens and made the library while the exHD was F:
Then you plug in the ipod and the windows changes it so the ipod has F:
Now itunes is lost so you get the !
You need to assign the drive letter to be permanent on the exHD. Use windows disk manager.
You an also assign a permanent drive letter to your ipod.
My advice is to pick letters far down in the alphabet.
This page has drive letter directions

  • Problem with iTunes and external drive

I moved my files to an external hard drive months ago but apparently forgot to uncheck the auto synch button.  It seems that I just managed to copy them all back to my computer hard drive where I now only have 6gb.  Since I originally moved the files I have put some movies and a little music on the computer and have iPad files in the mix.  How to I get it all synched so that I know I have everything and then delete it from my hard drive?
I then would like to add some new CDs to the IPod, but do not want them stored on my computer drive, just external drive.
Please feel free to treat me like I am clueless because I am.  Once I burned my entire Cd collection and moved it I have not done anything else with iTunes except buy the occasional app.
Thanks in advance for the help.
I was trying to follow directions on another post which did not seem to fit so I began trying random things.  Very bad idea!

    Nevermind.  I figured it out.

  • Problem; itunes and external hard drive

I saved my musics to my external hard drive and imported them to my itunes library, and tried to modify their tags, but everything in info section was inactive and couldn't be modified. but once i move the file to internal drive, it works fine no matter where it is stored afterwards. what's the problem here? I've already tried deselecting the read-only attribute.

You would have to change the tags while working inside the external drive. Then when you look at them through iTunes you will see the changes that you made.

  • ITunes on external Hardrive- Will Time Machine back it up?

I have all my iTunes music and iPhoto pictures on an external harddrive. I have another external Harddrive that I use for Time machine. I want Time Machine to Back up the external harddrive. When I open Time Machine preferences, the list of "Do not backup" contains my external harddrive and when I try to select it and hit the "-" sign it is grayed out. What gives? How can I use time Machine to back up my music and photos? I cant keep all that info on my internal harddrive. Surely Apple must have thought of this. Help!

    Had the same issue,
Had to make sure that all the drives I wanted to back up using Time Machine were in the same format. e.g. Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)
When I did that it gave me the option to back up the drive(s). However, be aware that to format a drive will delete the data currently on it.
I had to move everything off the drive. Reformat. Put the data back on. Then Time Machine accepted the drive for back up.
    Hope that helps?

  • ITunes and external amplifier (no Airport Express)

Running iTunes 7.7.1 and want to run line level out of my Macbook Pro directly into my external amplifier. I've got the right cable (I think) and have set up my receiver/amp properly (running the left/right into the CD audio in). However, I can't get the signal to make it through to the speakers. My receiver is old enough that it doesn't tell me if a signal is coming in, but I can't see any reason it wouldn't be (and I know the receiver works). I can hook up ear buds to the headphones port and hear the music as well. I shouldn't need an Airport Express for this direct connection, should I?
Any ideas? Any preferences in iTunes that I need to get set correctly? Thanks.

There are no settings in iTunes other than volume that would affect this. Do other sounds from your Mac play through the amp (e.g. system sounds or sounds from a web site)? If not, then check the Sound system preference and make sure the appropriate output is selected. If it is, you may have a bad cable (it needs to be a 1/8" stereo to dual RCA) or something misset on the amp.
    Hope this helps.

  • Itunes and external HD

One year ago I successfully transferred all of my itunes files onto an external HD. I changed in preferences for the songs I load to dump it automatically to the external. There have been no problems up until recently. The last batch of CD's I loaded into itunes did not go onto the external but instead went directly to the HD of my macbook. It makes no sense. Everything still is set up for the songs to be placed on the external automatically. After noticing this, I copied them from the macbook HD onto the itunes folder on the external ; a pop up came up telling me that some of the artists are already on the external drive and do I want to replace the old with the new? I clicked "no" and checked the "all button:.
The reason I clicked "no" is that the music that was on the macbook HD in itunes was the same "Artist" , but not the same song...For some reason if I would have copied them over to the external- it would have erased the artist and song and replaced it with the one on the HD of the macbook. Granted, where there were no duplication of artists, the files transferred no problem. My two questions are:
    1. How did all of the sudden the itunes files become placed on the macbook HD and not the external when the path under preferences still reads external?
    2. Why is the external not copying duplicated artists with different songs and just adding the additional song file under the already present artist name?
    Thanks
    Kroe

Okay, first make sure that all the songs you like in your iTunes is listed in the iTunes programme. Right now as long as the songs are in the list that's fine let's not worry whether its in your external or internal for now. Go to iTunes>Preferences>Advanced. See if the folder's location is where you want it to be; in your external drive. If it is don't do anything, if it isn't correct it. Now go to the menu bar. Click on Advanced>Consolidate Library. This put everything that's listed in iTunes in one location that's specified in the location that you desire. If you want it in the external then everything will be there.

  • Time capsule and external hardrive

can I attach an external hard drive to time capsule to expand storage? If so, are there any downsides?

I am having the same problem. I have two drives plugged into the USP port using a USB2.0 hub. Everything works fine for about a day. Then just the internet access works but none of the drives are accessible, not even the internal drive in the TC.
    Symptoms:
    • Internet access works
    • Airport utility can find the TC but cannot access the settings.
    • The desktop cannot access the Time Capsule.
    To recover:
    • Turn off the external drives and unplug the TC.
    • Plug in the TC and wait for a green light.
    • Turn on the external drives.
    • Repeat every day or so.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

  • ITunes and external speaker (Airport Express)

    Hi,
How to choose the external speaker ( Airport Expess) in Applescript in iTunes ?.
    Thanks

I would like to know the answer to this, too, although looking at the iTunes scripting dictionary, there doesn't seem to be any way to set or get the currently chosen external speakers.

  • Itunes and external harddrives

I have all my music on an external HD. I loaded a folder from the HD to Itunes..but the music will only play when the HD is connected to the pc. Do I need to convert the music or something once it is in itunes?

You need to drag the folder to the internal drive before putting it in iTunes, or organize the library from within iTunes.

  • Fire Wire issues with DAW and External Hardrive

Hello Everyone. I'm running a new Mac pro and I have several Firewire hardware plugged up to it. The main issue I have Is may DAW (Presonus FirePod) freezes and looses it's sound. I have to shut down and restart on a lot. I'm not sure if my fire wire Graid 500 is conflciting with it. Is there any way to solve this issue with multiple fire wire devices hooked up?

Most FW cabels are not designed to have hard drives and consumer electronics together. Never daisy chain or use together on a hub.
I invested in PCIe FW800, trouble with freezing coming out of deep sleep or sleep. With Viewsonic LCD the fans would spin (very slow but never totally off) and wake up fine. With Apple Cinema 23" the system now freezes coming out of sleep. So Aaxeon PCIe may not be a good idea (unless they are aware and have improved support or chipset - bought through OWC for $109).
But I do think PCIe (maybe FW400) is the way to go. I prefer to have RAID with a "one drive per channel" making eSATA preferable. Otherwise, you are using one channel for all devices. And one drive per cable.
SoftRAID folks warn against the problems with consumer electronics, as does Granite Digital (which sells pricey high-end SCSI and FW cables).

  • Network Mac & PC with External Hardrive??

I'm getting confused, so thought I would just go ahead and ask.
This is what I want to do. Can I?
Create a wireless network (maybe the new extreme)- connect a printer and External Hardrive. I would have a Mac & a PC running off it.
My question is about the Ex hardrive. I realize it would need to be Fat32 to run both, but I want a large drive. I want to 1. backup my mac 2. Save large files like movies 3. have an area to share with the PC.
I think Kappy mentioned that if I format it Fat32, the whole thing needs to be??? Is that the case? Any suggestions on what would be best for what I'm thinking? Am I thinking wrong?
    I appreciate your comments!

  • Hey everyone! i have a external hardrive i keep my itunes library of songs on and it wont sync with my ipod touch inless i copy and paste it into my ipod device when thats conected. i dont want all the songs on there only checked ones. help plz!!

im having trouble with syncing my ipod touch with my itunes library that i keep on a external hardrive. when i plug up my external hardrive that has all my songs on it, it doesn't sync to my ipod correctly. i have to copy and paste the songs to my ipod device when its connected. i dont want all the songs on there and i want to be able to manually control whats on my ipod. and id like to take some songs off of the ipod also but i want them still in my itunes library though. i usually check the songs i want on the ipod but it isnt working that way maybe because its a external hardrive?? i never had a problem with past ipods with my library on itunes but i ran out of space on my computer and had to transfer all of the songs to my external hardrive. please someone help me!! i thought it would be simple! but it isnt the case! i plug up my hardrive then my ipod, i press sync and nothing gets transfered unless i copy and paste them to the ipod. even though it says ipod syncing in progress! this is really confusing! please help me!! sorry if this is jumbled up and confusing..

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.
