ITunes and mulitple machines

Have several computers in a home network, wired and also Airport.
Figured out how to share the library between computers: How do I share control between them. Main library on comp #1, shared to #2, how di I adjust the playlists and such from #2?
Thanks
Michael

I agree:
I have a G4 at work and an iMac at home, one ipod nano, and would like itunes to allow me to duplicate what the excellent "rsync" unix utility does:
keep it all in sync.
I don't want to care where I download podcasts or tunes off itunes store, I just want to get that on my nano and into my other library behind the scenes.
This business of "You can only sync to one Library at a time - would you like to erase everything blah blah blah" is wrong. I bought a lot of cool mac stuff, make it so it works together and amps my stokage.

  • IPhoto, iTunes, and Time Machine

I have a late 2009 Mac Mini running Mavericks. The Mini has a 200gb drive.  Is it better to have iPhoto, iTunes and Time Machine on an external hard drive? I understand it doesn't matter where the location is as long as you have adequate drive space. That is not what I am asking. Another words, you have a separate external drives for EACH one.  Does it make sense to have separate drives for iPhoto, iTunes and TM. All of these external drives plugged into the Mini. I am thinking of the recovery as well as if one drive crashes then you are not dead in water,
I am thinking this way because iPhoto alone can get fairly large as well as iTunes. It makes sense to me to have separate drives for each one. Anyone else have this type of setup at home?

Thanks for the response. I understand that I would need a backup of all three drives.  However, I was asking if it is better to have your iPhoto and iTunes libraries on separate drives versus using 1 large drive to hold the data. The other point, iPhoto and iTunes can get fairly large in size over time. So, do you use 1 large external drive or use 2 separate drives.  Obviously, I know that when a drive crashes, you may or may not be able to recover any data off of it. Obviously, I know that you need a backup of the drives in case of drive failure.
I would like to know if other Apple users have separate drives for iPhoto, iTunes and TM?  If so, which manufacturer are you using?

  • Why does my Mac shutdown while playing itunes and the machine is in idle mode?

When I am playing music and my iMac goes into sleep mode, the music stops after 5 to 10 minutes and my machine shuts down.  Why?  Is there a way to stop this behavior?

    Hello Jason,,
Thanks for the response.  Your suggestion is not my problem.        It does not matter how long I set the machine to sleep.  My       machine powers down after some period, but ONLY when I am playing       iTunes.  I am also running Parallels 9.0 which uses Windows 7 at       the same time Mavericks is running.  This allows me to use my       Windows programs.  If I shut down Parallels, it does not solve my       problem.  Also, it is important to note that when playing iTunes,       the machine suspends Windows 7 completely and powers down the Mac       to the sign-on screen.  Sometimes the machine powers down after 10       minutes and sometimes 20 minutes or a little more.  I am really       stumped!!  This situation never happens unless I am playing       iTunes.  Otherwise the sleep routine functions normally.

  • Problems with new iMac and Maverick: ITunes and Time Machine

Just upgraded from an old to new iMac, migrated my data from my old machine and installed Maverick. Couple of major problems.
    1. My iTunes library won't open. I've been into the library folders but can't work out how to get the old library to load. Decided to try a sync back from my iPhone but while the phone tells me that it has synced with my Mac, the music hasn't moved across.
    2. Time Machine doesn't work. On my old machine I was using an external Omega hard drive but when I plug it into the new Mac it isn't even showing up on the desktop. Clearly there's a connection of some sort as the disc is powering from the Mac. Prior to upgrade, I was getting messages that Time Machine couldn't be updated but I put that down to my failing elderly Mac, which kept crashing, freezing and needed replacing. Perhaps the external drive was dying too.
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Thanks,
    Mike

I dragged the installer from the install disk to my desktop and was more successful in installing problem CS2 apps. Make sure to update everything as well. Some times it takes a restart to get the finickiness out of PS.

  • 2 external hard drives with iTunes and Time Machine

    Hi folks.
My 160gb hard drive on my iMac is full so I've bought 2 x 1tb external hard drives, my plan being to move my iTunes library to one of them (as this uses the majority of space) and run it from there and use the 2nd hard drive with Time Machine.
My question is this, will Time Machine backup any changes to my iTunes library if it isn't on the computer's internal hard drive?
    Thanks!
    Brian

Just be sure the iTunes volume is formatted +Mac OS Extended (Journaled).+ Most drives come formatted for Windoze, and TM can't back them up.
See #1 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum) if you need to reformat and aren't sure how.

  • Trouble with itunes and time machine

i am having trouble with my iphone and thought it may have been itunes, so i went into time machine and tried to replace my current version of itunes with the last one. Everything went fine until i got right to the end of replacing it. it said i didnt have the authorization to do that...or something along those lines... now i cant even open itunes, ill click on it and it just bounces once and thats it. can anyone help me!?

I haven't been able to back up to my FreeAgent external hard drive
The TM disk is your backup destination and I assume it is the Seagate FreeAgent disk. The source is your Mac.
Wireless. I have a Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive plugged in by USB to the mac.
You say it is connected via USB, yet your are saying backups are done wirelessly.
From Terminal, can you post the output of tmutil destinationinfo (remove any personal information as you see fit)?

  • ITunes and Time Machine

    Hello,
My 2006 iMac has a 160G hard drive. More than half that is the iTunes library! And lately, the hard drive is getting too full.
I back up with Time Machine onto a Western Digital USB external hard drive with 320G capacity.
I'm thinking I should put the iTunes library on the WD external HD.
Will I have to delete all my HD back ups to do this? Should I re-format the WD external HD?
Or should I buy a new 2T external HD which would be big and fast, usable when I upgrade to a new iMac later this year?
What new external HD would you recommend?
    Many thanks,
    Art

    A couple of things.
First I'd recommend against using WD EHD, their enclosures tend to have problems with OS X.
Next is NEVER use the TM drive for any storage than TM. If you want to store your media library on an external HD (which is a very good idea) get another EHD and dedicate it for media, including your iTune, iPhoto (or Aperture) libraries.
As far as what drives I'd recommend they would be:
    OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
    Lacie Quadra d2 series series
    G-Tech G drive series
All are of similar build quality and features. Personally I use Lacie but wouldn't hesitate with either OWC or G-Tech.

  • Itunes and time machine (authorization)

    Hi all,
After a recent apple update I lost the ability to connect wirelessly to the internet. I have reverted back to an older system set-up and have rectified this problem however now I can't play any of my itunes purchases. I believe this is because I changed the username of my apple account after the latest time machine backup I made. It says I am signed into the correct account but if I try an play anything it asks me to authorize the computer again. If I put my password in at this point it opens a file and starts to play however there is no picture or sound just a grey window? I have tried the help on the apple website and it didn't help at all as I had to get the latest version of itunes which required an update of safari, quick time and the operating system (to 10.5.8) so I lost the wifi again.
    Anyone had this problem?

  • Why is the iTunes Match setup process causing iTunes (and my machine) to freeze?

I purchased iTunes Match several days ago, and it continues to freeze iTunes, subsequently locking up my machine. It keeps getting stuck on step 1 of the setup process (analyzing my library); I have left it overnight several times with no luck.
At this point, I really just want my $25 back, but has anyone else encountered this problem? Is there a workaround?

it's been confirmed elsewhere that: once again, itunes IS in fact the problem.
many kudos to Apple, my hat tips to their engineers for being such brilliant programmers. and i'd also like to take this opportunity to thank them for the numerous other times i've had problems with Apple-written software on my windows-based pc's....
    Go Apple, yeah !!

  • Itunes and multiple machines

Ok I'm starting to understand why some people find itunes aggravating.
I have 3 macs in our home, an apple tv(silly us), and 2 iphones. My main machine is a mac pro and we have two laptops. The mac pro does an amazing job keeping the apple tv synced(wirelessly) and the ipods. However I run into problems with the laptops.
I'm considering using chronosync to keep the music folders synced up. The problem is while I can easily copy the itunes folder I of course don't get all of the playlists, etc. And that doesn't tell itunes on my laptops that their's new music that it hasn't indexed.
    * So Question - if I copy over the itunes library files to the laptops- will that transfer the song and playlists over correctly - or will there be volume/directory problems.
Has anyone written a utility to make this process easier?
    Apple if your listening -
    * port the excellent syncing code that you use on apple tv to your normal machines. If I'm allowed to authorize 5 machines for my itunes content - allow me to easily move my data to those machines. As I stated Apple TV does a great job remotely - just extend this functionality to my macbook and macbook pro.
    * please add functionality to detect new files in a folder and automatically add them to the library. This way if I acquire new content I can just do a simple chronosync to move the files over.
    * Ideally if my wife buys a song with her iphone or on her laptop - we want that music to be added to the "ecosystem" and synced back to the main machine. Luckily she mostly just buys CDs and I rip them for her - but it's a pain.
Anyway thx for the help. And if this is a dead horse I apologize.

  • CD unmounts from iTunes and Machine after CDDB completion

When I mount a CD (just put it in the CD tray), it will show up in iTunes 7.6, but as soon as the CDDB is finished, it will unmount the CD from iTunes and the machine (will not see it anymore on the Desktop either), but does not eject it physically from the machine. I have to open the CD tray to get it out, but then if I then put it right back in, it stays mounted in iTunes (and imports normally at that time). I've had to do this for the last several CD's I have tried importing (Audio CDs, CDDB does find the information for them). I put the CD in, iTunes will find the CDDB information, unmount the CD, I then put the CD back in and THEN it stays mounted.
Has anyone else seen this before? All perms are repaired, restarted, etc...
    Thank you!

Well, maybe I should be relieved to find so many threads on this problem, since that means it probably isn't the replacement SuperDrive I recently had put into my MBP (in the last week of its warranty). Same here: every third or fifth CD I insert, the CD shows on the desktop as "Audio CD", then iTunes pops up, consults CDDB, then shows me the name and asks me if I want to import it. Whereupon the CD unmounts -- sometimes before I click Okay, sometimes after -- and nothing further happens. Like a poster on another thread (I picked this one because it was the most recent), I've taken to keeping Disk Utility open while importing CDs, so I can go there and mount the CD -- whereupon iTunes sees it again and asks again if I want to import it, I click Okay and proceed.
Apparently this problem has been widespread at least since iTunes 7.5. Please, everyone who has this problem, send feedback to:

  • This Question is at least 2.5 years old.  But still an issue.  I have an early 2008 and mid 2010 13 inch macbook pro running iTunes 10.7.  Itunes on both machines doesn't recognize blank cds or allow me to import from a music cd when I insert it.

iTunes does not use the .xml it uses the .itl
If you are sure your old library file migrated across (does the file size and modification dates suggest it has?) start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and guide it to the .itl file to get it to use that one.

  • I would like to connect an external hard drive to my time machine and use it as a network drive to store itunes and iPhoto  how do i do this

I have just purchased a new my book hard drive and would like to connect it to my time capsule and store my itunes and iphoto contentent there to free up space on my internal hard drive . Can this be done and what is the process?

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

  • How do i restore my itunes and iphoto from time machine?

I backed up my iMac using Time Machine using an external drive, after purchasing a MacBook Pro. I now want to move my iTunes and iPhoto from this iMac time machine backup to my new MacBook, but I can't get past the "you can't open the application because it is in a time machine backup". I attempted to migration assistant and it said it moved all of my applications over, but the songs and photos from my old iTunes and iPhoto didn't transfer. How can I just ******* move the songs and photos to my new computer from my god **** external drive? Why does it have to be so complicated...

    Look at Q15 here. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
There are separate sections for iphoto and itunes.
It has to be so complicated because Apple made TM to do too much and be too many things to too many people.. a horse designed by a committee. It has become flakey in later editions.
If you still have the iMac you can move the files directly from the source.. you don't need to use TM backups at all.

Can I include external drives to be backed up using Time Machine?  Not only do I want to back up my IMac, but I have several extenal drives for one iPhoto, one iTunes and one for other files & documents.  How do I know if they are included in the backup process?

Yes, if they are not exclude then TM backs them up.
