ITunes and Network Storage Issues

I have 3 computers, all Vista, and have my ITunes Library on a NAS. When downloading music fron the ITunes Store on each computer, the new files are downloaded to the local machine, not to the NAS. What can be changed so that when anyone purchases a new song or app they are downloaded to the NAS, not the local machine, I know that each library is showing different song counts as the are not syncing properly with the NAS so we are all missing songs that each has downloaded.

iTunes copies purchased tracks and ripped CDS into the iTunes Music folder as designated in the local computer's iTunes preferences.
You could set the location of the iTunes folder to the NAS drive. This would copy the tracks there but not add them to the other PCs library database. That would have to be done manually from each PC.
However you could take a look at a third party utility such as Tune Ranger:

  • ITunes Media And Removable Storage Issue - Can't Get iTunes to recognize the new location.  Any tips?

I've had my iTunes media on an external HDD for years.  Let's call this drive B.
My iTunes library and xml file reside on my Mac HDD.
I decided that I wanted to buy a bigger HDD and move all of the media to it.  Last night I copied all of the media files to the new HDD (let's call it P) from B.  I also copied the iTunes folder from my Mac HDD to P and directed iTunes to look for the media in the Advanced settings.
Of course when I launched iTunes after all the hours it took to do all of this copying, it could not find any of the media on P without asking whether I wanted to locate it - and the library was full of explanation points.  When I examined the info on a few songs, it was showing that all of the media was still pointing to B as the location with the complete directory structure pointing to that old location - and not to the new drive.
I tried creating a new library and still could not get the library to recognize that all of the media was now on P instead of B.
I remember when I did something similar years ago, I just changed the location in iTunes in the Advanced settings and iTunes realized that all of the music was on B instead of its prior location.
I finally gave up and restored things back to the original settings with all the media on B.
I did a lot of searches and followed everything explicitly -- which basically meant copying the iTunes folder (with the library and xml files within it), and the media to the new drive and then telling iTunes where the new location was.  To me it shouldn't be any simpler than that to get iTunes to recognize a new location for all the music.
Can anyone offer a more rudimentary breakdown of things for me to try so that I can get iTunes to acknowledge that all the media is on P and not B?
P is larger than B  for those of you who are wondering why I'm trying to get this to work. And P also will be a drive that dedicated to iTunes and media and nothing else.  Unlike B, which has all kinds of assorted files on it along with my music, etc.
And yes, each time I made changes  - I restarted iTunes

Thank you both for the information.
It sounds like I did something out of sequence based upon reading the split library information, thinking I was doing the right thing.
This is exactly what I did
I copied the folder with all the media from B to P
I copied the entire iTunes folder from the Mac HDD to P
I option click started iTunes and connected to the library file and when iTunes opened it was OK - and looked like it normally does when I was still using B as the storage
    I connected to P
When it didn't work, I tried to create a new library and did the same exact things.
    So let me ask this:
Should I hook up P again and delete everything off of it except for the folders that have the media in them and then copy the current iTunes folder over onto P again - and then copy all of the media from it's current location into the iTunes Media folder inside of the iTunes folder I copy over from the Mac and then try to connect and consolidate everything?
I assume that if I move everything from the current media folder into the iTunes/iTunes Media/ that I copy over everything will be under the iTunes umbrella as if things were never split?
I don't seem to recall it being this difficult when I originally set up things on B, as it was a split situation then too, if I'm not mistaken.
I really appreciate the instruction.  And honestly it does make sense to have everything in one location to prevent problems like this from happening  - it would just be great if iTunes had a feature that moved and/or copied the necessary files to the new location to prevent splitting links

  • Sharing iTunes from Network Storage Device

    Hi everyone,
I'm just new to iTunes and the apple forums, so please be patient with me. ;o)
I have a 2 x PC Windows XP Pro network at home with iTunes 7.02 installed on both. Currently my wife has her tunes on her PC and likewise with mine.
Recently I purchased one of those Netgear SC101 network storage devices so that we can keep all of our important documents, images, emails and so on in a central spot just in case something happens to one of our PC's.
The Netgear has 2 x HDD's which are mirrored for extra protection (to be sure, to be sure)!
What I need to know is whether we can we combine both of our play lists into a single one, and store it on the Netgear so that we can both access it at the same time?
    Is this do-able?
Over to the "brains trust". Thank you in advance for your help and advice.
    Cheers, Mike

    Mike,
I have 3 Windows computers, 2 running XP MCE, 1 running Vista, and also have a MacBookPro. I have a Buffalo Terastation Home server, with the entire iTunes music collection on it. Each computer has the iTunes folder mapped as a network drive, and it has an assigned drive letter. That makes the process so much easier, as you can immediately access anything, each computer can add or make changes (you can block deletion from certain computers if you wish). All computers can access the music simultaneously and I have them streamed to different music sources via airtunes. The playlists are computer specific, so you can keep your playlist on your computer, your wife's playlist on her's. You can update your iPod on yours, and since you can authorize 5 computers via iTunes Store, you can have up to 5 computers in your household using iTunes. So far, no glitches. Hope that helps.

  • Itunes and Networking

I have an issue where I want to take itunes and it's library of music and apps from PC windows 7 A to pc windows 7 B, but instead of burning through a bunch of discs backing up the library I was wondering since they are on the same network, if there is anyway possible for me to do a type of transfer from PC A to PC B. I gave PC A to my boyfriend and he's constantly on it making my time to sync and add new apps limited when it would be so much easier to just do everything on PC B, the new computer with nothing from my IPOD TOUCH 2nd Gen, non MC model, with IOS 4.2.1. I'm pretty pc savvy but networking isn't my strongest area, I could use all the help I could get when it comes to this. Perhaps an email with step by step instructions sent to [email protected] or maybe even a phone call if someone is feeling kind enough to take a moment. The mechanics of this should work, but I could be wrong, just human Thank you so much for taking the time, who ever is reading this.

basically, all you should need to do is to copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from PC A to PC B, replacing the iTunes folder in place on B.

  • Itunes and Iphone sync issues

    Hi There,
So I have a slight problem and would be grateful if someone would shed some light as to how I can overcome this.
    I have an iPhone 5 and iTunes for windows, however, I have not downloaded the current software for the iPhone 5 as I do no have any storage space for it. I have recently tried to update my iPhone's music playlist but the playlist I want to sync is not, however, my old music and playlists keep syncing instead, and it keeps adding albums.In my new playlist I have approx 200ish songs whereas my iTunes is syncing over 700ish (and I've made sure I have not clicked and synced my library- my library has over 1000 so not sure where its syncing 700) I have tried several times to fix this by;
    switching off phone
closing iTunes and opening it again
creating a different playlist and re-syncing music
    de-selecting albums and artists manually
    de-selecting all music then syncing
    created a different playlist
and none of the above have worked at all
It would be much appreciated if anyone has any advice or guidance as to how I can fix this, as I have new music I want to listen to, and with this new music I'll have more storage space!
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi R@chel,
It sounds as if you are having difficulty making sure your iPhone only gets the music you want. In order to do this, you need to manually manage the data that gets synced to your iPhone. This article explains how to do so -

    Syncing manually
If you prefer not to automatically sync content to your device, you can set up manual syncing:
Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes.
Click the Devices button in the upper-right corner. (If you're viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button in the upper-right corner. The Devices button will appear.)
In the main iTunes browser window, select the Summary tab.
Select the option to Manually manage music and videos or Manually manage music. This will deselect the automatic sync settings for the Music, Movies, and TV Shows tabs.
    Click Apply.
    And -
After following the steps above, you can add individual songs, videos, and playlists from iTunes to your device. To add content to your device:
    Select your device.
    Click On this Device.
Choose Add to in the upper-right corner. If you drag a song, video, TV show, or movie while viewing the media in your iTunes library, a sidebar will show up on the right. You can drag your content onto the device. You can also create and modify playlists directly on the device.

  • How does this system sound? (And network storage)

    Hi All,
I'm gonna be getting a new setup soon, thought I'd run it past you guys here.  Really it's an all rounder, I don't have a job in production or anything, but like editing in my spare time for fun (making filmclips out of movies and stuff).  It's not that easy to find good advise about setting up a system specifically for Premiere.
So below is the details of what i'm thinking of.  The PC I have at the mo, i'm gonna turn into a Windows Home Server.  Has anyone used Premiere with networked storage before?  I plan to have OS/Programs on an SSD, and I'll probably have to stick a regular HDD in the box as well (probably a 1Tb seagate or something), then backup to the WHS.  Any thoughts?  Also what sort of impact does the graphics card have?  I'm thinking of getting a second card later down the track and SLI them.
    Cheers

  • Win 8.1 - ITunes and Ipod Touch issues

I am running a new Envy TS notebook with Windows 8.1. I upgraded (1/23/14) to iTunes 11.1.4.62. After installation I encountered the procudure entry point error when attempting to start itunes. Per an Apple discussion group, I did the following:
Copy QTMovieWin.dll from c:\Program Files (x86) Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
    and paste intoc:\Program Files (x86) \ iTunes
This enabled iTunes to start but would not recognize my ipod. In Windows explorer, my ipod was listed only as Apple Ipod. I followed the recommendations to upgrade drivers to no avail. Finally I went to the control panel to uninstall the following Apple programs:
    Apple Mobile Device Suport
    Apple Application Support
    iTunes
I then reboted the system and reinstalled iTunes and rebotted the system once again after installation.
Windows explorer now recognized my ipod as well as iTunes. In fact, now when I plug my ipod in a USB port, itunes automatically starts up and performs a sync with the ipod touch. Haven't had that happen for quite some time.

    Hi JPM and Mlisowski ,
I-pods are the great mashines , but seem that some of the apple software do some mess in the win registries. They are running in the backround slowing a computer , and some times can do that Your other devices as a DVD reader just disapieres.
By my personaly experience , You can thry to use other (more windows friendly) free software to sincronyse Your i-pod,
and You may considere to check this  page

Since now , it solves some some problems for me.

  • ITunes / AppleTV and Network Storage (NAS)

So, is there any easy way to store my videos on my NAS (Infrant ReadyNAS X6, not that that matters particuarly) for use with the AppleTV? I have a couple hundred gigs of MP3's and video's, and can't keep all that on my laptop, obviously, nor would I want to.

    100greys,
Your reply makes it unclear what exactly is connected to your MacBook by 802.11g. It would be unusual to connect a NAS to a network wirelessly using this protocol because of its relatively low speed. If possible, it would be much more efficient to connect it by wired ethernet, preferably using gigabit ethernet.
Regarding a waste of bandwidth with the Apple TV, the streaming bandwidths involved are small, no more than 5 Mbps for the highest supported quality video, so there should be little "waste" involved.
More to the point perhaps, a NAS server probably could not stream content directly to the Apple TV without greatly compromising the security of Apple's DRM, since that server would have to supply any DRM-related functions that iTunes now supplies. Apple has made it clear that it is strongly opposed to sharing the secret details of its DRM methods with any outside company, so this is likely the reason this feature is not provided.

  • ITunes Store Network Connection Issue

    Hello,
I have a 80GB Classic ipod I use on my home computer with Windows XP. I opened iTunes last night but could not open the store. This is the message I recieved. (iTunes could not connect to the store network connection was reset). I can open IE and Outlook Express email so I don't have a network issue other then iTunes.Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Weird happenings for me too...Yesterday I couldn't download a free app, and today, none of my app update downloads will download. I just get the progress bar that says "Downloading ___", followed by "Could not purchase ______. The network connection was reset". Frustrating for sure.
Update: Now, I can download some of the apps, but just got an error that says "There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later." Even going directly to the item in the iTunes Store doesn't work. There's definitely something weird going on.

  • Ipad itunes downloaded causing storage issue

I had no idea my itunes music, photos and video's were so large that they have taken up about 50% of the storage on my new ipad. How do I delete them without losing them on my imac and iphone?

You must first sync your iPad with iTunes on your Mac!
Then you choose for "Manualy sync Music and Videos" in iTunes, then you can go to the tabs above, like Apps and uncheck there what you don't want on you iPad, the same for Music, Photos and Videos, then sync again.

  • Corrupted itunes and re-downloaded issue

I have Windows 7 and my itunes randomely said it has been corrupted and I needed to reinstall it. When I did it then said the library cannot be read because it was created with a newer version of itunes. I am at a loss as to what to do. Please help!

    Hi teachamen!
I have some information here that I believe will help to resolve your issue. First, since your library file says it was created by a newer version of iTunes, let's make sure the latest version is installed on your computer. In order to verify this, you may need to completely uninstall and reinstall iTunes on your PC. There is a group of components that must be uninstalled from your computer in a certain order when uninstalling iTunes for the best possible conditions, and that is outlined in this article right here:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923
Then you will want to make sure you download the latest version of iTunes, which can be found here:
Apple - iTunes - Download iTunes Now
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
After performing these steps, if you are still having issues opening your iTunes library, then you will want to see this article about re-creating your iTunes library file:
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

  • ITunes and Photos - Storage Mismatch

    Dear All,
Since upgrading to the iOS 8.0.2, i've had a problem with my photo storage not matching between the phone and iTunes.
So, upon syncing the iPhone it states i have 2539 (6.19 Gb) of photos on my phone, however, on my phone it says i only have 944 under collections/moments (the repalcement for the camera roll). Shared storage we know if iCloud and not part of this total. Albums only have 226 recently added.
So where are all my photos on the phone? I've run out of space, it's syncing with 0 photos and i can't find a solution.
    Please help!
    Thanks

You need to ask that on the iPhone forum.

  • ITunes and Network Folders

I keep all my music on a Shared Folder (mapped drive letter e:\) on my NAS device. I am able to set it as the default location for my music in iTunes however, everytime I restart iTunes it defaults to my "My Music\iTunes" folder on my desktop.
How can I make this perminent so that I am not storing music to a local machine vs my network share?
      Windows XP

This might help...Before you start iTunes, open the hard drive that has your music on it though windows explorer or my computer. Once you get windows to 'see' the hard drive with the music, that might stop iTunes from resetting your music folder.
Good Luck, and post back to let me know if that worked.
