ITunes and Norton

It is finally time for me to renew my Norton Internet Security. Last time I did so, iTunes quit working properly (it was iTunes version 6). I was simply wondering if there is still an issue with compatibility? Have people had better luck with McAfee? Help is much appreciated.

last time, everything got so messed up that I had to remove both and start from scratch. I hope this is no longer an issue

    I have had the same problems with iTunes as everybody else.Installed fine but will not open.This was due to NIS blocking iTunes(and many other programs) from accessing the internet.This is what I did with the help from symantec;
    1. open nis
    2. Select personal firewall
    3. select configure
    4. select programs from the tabs
    5. select program scan. This will scan your computer for all the programs that require access to the internet.
    6. When the scan is complete look at the list of programs to see if iTunes is there.
    7. If itunes is not on the list select ADD and browse to where iTunes is located on your drive and select the program. The program will be added to the list and will prompt you to configure iTunes access, select permit always.
    8. restart your computer
This worked for me and came from symantec's web site and email help. Good luck

B Noir suggested I ask you about my problem.
I completely gave up on 5.0.0 and 5.0.1. They completely crashed my system and had to do a hard reboot. This is what I did first to get some function back:
    Starters:
I have a brand new Sony Vaio Centrino Laptop with 1gig of memory. I am running the Norton Suite, there is a program preloaded on here called SpySubtract, and AOL is often used.
I had the prior version of ITunes running fine, with no problems whatsoever. I then upgraded to 5.0, we all know what a mistake that was. I waited for 5.0.1 and here's what happened.
    FIRST ATTEMPT:
#1) I strictly followed the uninstall instructions B Noir gave me, it was link to a posting by Da Gopha.
#2) I updated/upgraded Norton to make sure I had the most recent version and data.
    #3) I restarted.
#4) I turned off Norton and then I downloaded QT standalone from the Apple site.
    #5) I restarted.
#6) I turned off Norton and then downloaded Itunes 5.0.1.
#7) It opened, it even found my music and everything. Joy abounded. I felt like Jack on the Titanic: I am king of the world. Silly boy I was.
#8) I closed Itunes, turned on Norton and restarted Itunes. I got to the Norton prompt page, said to always allow and then NOTHING. Dead, just nothing happened.
    #9) Restarted, still nothing.
#10) Restarted, turned off Norton, tried to start Itunes, NOTHING happened.
    SO:
#11) Went through all the steps to erase Itunes/Ipod etc. again.
#12) Loaded up the version that came with my disc: Itunes 4.8.31 and the QT from the disc: 6. It worked, again Joy abounds.
#13) Restart, let Norton turn back on. Tried Itunes (4.8.31) and . . . . NOTHING. I check the Norton Config and Itunes is set to allow. Bonjour is still there, don't know why, but it is also set to always allow. This version of this program worked on this machine before all this crazy 5.0 and now 5.0.1 stuff.
#14) My wife went to sleep muttering something about me losing my marbles.
#15) Restart, turn OFF Norton and try Itunes. It starts, my music is there and everything. Joy again. However, very tempered. I can now only run Itunes if, and only if I turn off Norton. I really don't like being on the internet with norton off.
I just don't get it. I don't mind not having the new version of Itunes.
Does 4.8.31 new Bonjour. If I dump Bonjour will it effect 4.8.31 functioning. If not, it may fix things. How do I get rid of Bonjour.
Any ideas why this is happening. I can't upgrade. I can't function properly. I am not as frustrated as before because now I have my music, but this is not the way things are supposed to be.
B Noir then told me to do the Norton Scan and add Itunes to the list. This is what my response was to that suggestion:
I did the NIS scan, Itunes is NOT there on the list. I went to the Itunes directory, selected the program and got a box that said the program already had rules. I went back to the list that is normally populated (not the one that is generated after the scan). Sure enough Itunes is there and it is marked Permit Always (or something like that). I thought maybe it was a setting error. I highlighted Itunes (on the NIS list) and hit modify. Crash. Computer completely frooze up. I hit control-alt-delete, could get as far as the "do you want to notify MS of the problem" and then it just sat there. Needed to do a hard reboot and now I am back where I am.
Should I delete the NIS entry for Itunes, do a scan and see what happens. Remember, I am now running 4.8.31 and will not upgrade until it looks like this is fixed. Now I am just trying to get the functionality I once had back. What about Bonjour, should I get rid of it. If yes, how do I do that?
B Noir then suggested I contact you for help because you had figured out the Norton problem interplay.
    PLEASE HELP.
    Thank you,
    David

  • ITunes 7.1 and Norton Anti-virus do not get along!

Sounds like Itunes 7.1 is causing hella problems for everyone out there. Add me to the list. My Itunes works, my library is there, but this update, unlike every previous update Itunes has done, is not recognized by Norton Antivirus. Every 2-3 seconds I get an Internet Worm Protection Notice about Itunes, asking me if I want to allow it access. I of course say yes.....and then the same window pops up again. Extremely annoying.... I've also lost the ability to view other people's libraries over my local area network...not cool.
Any suggestions of what I can do within either Itunes or Norton Antivirus (2005....all latest updates) to regain my sanity?
    HP Pavillion   Windows XP

i'm with CoJeff on this one.
typically it's the firewall with NIS 2005 (or standalone Norton Personal Firewall) that causes grief with iTunes. (we've had these issues dating back to the iTunes 4.8 days with NIS 2005), but every now and then i see reports of that worm protection feature causing grief in similar ways.
the amount of reports of problems with NIS 2006 and 2007 are literally a couple of orders of magnitude less than with NIS 2005. so it may be worth just upgrading to one of the more recent versions.
... if you'd prefer to stick with your 2005, though, let us know and we can try running through a few of techniques we've used to deal with this.

  • HT1925 I am getting "invalid signature" when I try to download or update iTunes? Using IE10. and Norton. What to do? Please suggest. Thanks

I am using EI 10 and Norton. It will allow me to download iTunes, but not update. I cannot dowload apps from iTunes. Same error message.
    Thanks for help.

That suggests that the installer is getting damaged during the download.
I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

  • Songs transferred to Ipod will not play in Itunes and don't show in Ipod

I have had a nano for a good 6+ months and have yet to be able to fill it up with music. Under 200 songs it is a crap shoot whether or not the songs will show up after I eject it. If I load 200+ songs to the Ipod one of two things happen. 1. After ejecting the Ipod none of the songs i loaded show up on it, and after linking it back to the computer, itunes tells me that it must be restored. 2. a good number of songs will not play but are skipped over. The album art shows for a split second and goes to the next song. The next time I plug it into my computer it says that It does not recognize it and forces me to restore it again.
I have done the following among other things.
    1. Repeatedly restored my ipod, this does not help.
    2. Re-installed Itunes and Quicktime.
    3. Loaded only AAC files.
    4. Turned off Spy Sweeper while before plugging in my Ipod and load songs.
    5. Disabled Norton Anti-virus.
    6. Confirmed how I am ejecting it.
    6. Replaced my Ipod once.
    7. Bought a new computer HP Pavillion a1630n.
    8. Invested well over 40 hours of my time trying to get this thing to work.
I have over 200GB of music which and I cannot get much more than 2GB on my 4GB Ipod without a problem. As of this writting I have restored it 6 times, after each time I drag my songs to the Ipod icon, when it is done loading, I press the eject icon next to the IPod and each time I click English-->Music-->Artists--> and after that all I get is All-->All-->Nothing. I plug it back into the computer and have to restore it and start over. I have had the same problem on two Ipods, and two Computers. I want this to work so bad. Help Help Help.

The exact message that I get each time I plug my Ipod back in states, "iTunes cannot read teh contents of the iPod "MILOPOD." Go to the summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings."
I am continually restoring my Ipod over and over again reducing the number of songs on it over and over until I get lucky enough for the songs to stick. Only about 100 or so will regularly stick. I am now restoring it for the 7th time.

  • Latest iTunes and QT install properly, will not run. Help?

Fujitsu laptop 2.8Ghz, 512MB memory, XP SP2, iTunes 6.0.2.23, QT 7.04. Hardwired to router/cable Internet connection.
I am a dedicated Mac user, and friend has the above equipment. He had a previous point level version of iTunes that stopped working about the time he started using his new Nano. He removed iTunes and downloaded latest (above). Installation runs and finishes normally without any informational or error messages. Attempts to run iTunes from the desktop, or directly from the iTunes application fail (w/o any messages). Like a cat, it just ignores you.
I personally used the control panel to remove iTunes, and then delete iTunes folder corpse in program files. Rebooted the computer, downloaded (above) iTunes/QT package. It installs normally, yet any attempts to launch iTunes recreates the no activity situation. Both network installs and local installs produce same result.
He is going to use his vendor supplied backup disks to reinstall the computer. Then perform O/S updates, and then try to reinstall iTunes/QT again.
Is there any malware in the wild right now that may be contributing to this issue on Windows platforms? I will also be recommending that he turn off his Symantec A/V software for the next install, though it wasn't off during the initial successful installation and use of iTunes.
Any constructive ideas to get back out of the ditch? Yeah, I tried for months to get him over to the Apple side without success.
    Thx,
    Chuck

    Ok it is solved.
Reinstalled iTunes 6.03/QT 7.04 bundle with Norton Internet Security turned OFF.
With NIS still off, launched NIS panel and selected programs tab. Went to configure button, and then added each iTunes and QuickTime executable to NIS with "Permit" authorization.
Turned NIS back on and rebooted. Upon restart, clicking on iTunes desktop icon launched and played iTunes normally. Visited Apple music store, and also launched QT movie trailers without issue.
Again, friend's Fujitsu laptop running XP is now working fine after a hard lesson with Norton Internet Security application.
    Thankyou,

  • ITunes and Quicktime won't run

I had itunes and QT working fine when I bought my Ipod. I bought my son a Nano and that is when everything went bad. I have tried everything the apple website has to offer. I am at the point where I was able to download and install the latest version of itunes and QT from the Apple website. I installed each separately. They seemed to install fine. When I click on either of them they open for a second and then close with no error message. I am using Windows XP Home. I have an old version of Norton 2002 on the computer that is no longer operable. I tried unistalling it, and that disables by ISP login. Needless to say I have issues. Can anyone help, because Apple and Microsoft sure won't. Thanks,

    hi dukefafl!
hmmm. if both itunes and QT are failing to open when you try to launch them (with no error messages whatsoever), the first thing i worry about is infestation of the PC by Qoologic adware. (usually with that, people will see a brief "flash" of an itunes license screen when they try to open itunes ... but the symptom isn't universal.)
the free trial version of Ewido has been been cleaning that up for most people:
    ewido anti-malware download
if no joy with that, we'll try checking through a few of the rarer causes of the "error message free" launch failures. (Your Norton is unlikely to be the culprit in this case ... the error message free launch failure associated with that typically only hits people with NIS 2005.)

  • ITunes and QuickTime Failing to Open

    Hi
I have just been forced to buy a new hard drive as my previous one failed totally unexpectedly. Hence, my OS (XP Pro) is newly installed, as is all my other software. Having downloaded and installed iTunes 6 I tried to initiate it but it fails to open. I can see the iTunes.exe in processes but it will not close when I try to kill it. It locks with a memory usage of 12,848 K every time. I can kill all other iTunes/iPod processes but not the iTunes.exe. My registry has no errors, I have no spyware (according to the MS AntiSpyware Beta) and no viruses.
I have all the essential updates for XP Pro plus a selection of optional ones. My hardware drivers are also up to date.
From a quick browse of the forums it seems that Norton Internet Security 2005 might be to blame for my problems. One of the pieces of advice I read was to use AVG software as an alternate (which I have used before and liked) as Norton IS 2005 stops iTunes from loading. I am willing to do that as a short term option, but NIS has always been my security system of choice and I would prefer to have the option to keep using it.
What I would like to know is whether it is true that Norton IS 2005 causes this conflict and if there is a way around it without changing my choice of security or is NIS 2005 totally incompatible with iTunes? I may well be upgrading to NIS 2006 soon and would also like to know if this issue will reoccur if I do. The current conflict also seems to hugely slow down my shutting down speed.
I hope you can quickly resolve or answer my questions.
    Thank you for your time.

    Hi blaccrichard,
This may help you. Turn NIS 2005’s Personal Firewall OFF, (turn it OFF Permanently until your ready to turn it back on) then click CONFIGURE. ( Might be a good idea to disconnect from the Internet at this stage)
Under the PROGRAMS tab remove any reference to Apple iTunes or iTunes or iTunes Helper Module or anything related. and reboot.
After coming back go back to NIS 2005’s Personal Firewall, click CONFIGURE. Under the PROGRAMS tab click ADD at the bottom, a SELECT A PROGRAM window will pop up. Add the following files one at a time, iTunes.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, QuickTimePlayer.exe, qttask.exe, QTInfo.exe. The last 3 are found in your Quicktime folder where that is in your system. Click OK. Turn NIS 2005’s Personal Firewall ON, and try starting iTunes again.
It seems the Quicktime files were never automatically entered into NIS 2005’s Personal Firewall allowable programs listing. Adding them manually should help. I also noticed that from my previous version of iTunes the program listed in the Firewall was named Apple iTunes and not iTunes after I upgraded to 6.

  • Updated my Itunes and now cannot log into store

I just updated my itunes and now I cannot log into the store. When I try to, I get a message that says The network connection timed out. make sure network settings are correct and connection is active. I have no idea what this means. Please help me.

CHeck Norton or McAfee, whatever security software you have. Remove iTUnes from its list and then re-add it. Make sure everything is added: both iTunes.exe & iTunes Helper.exe.

  • ITunes and Paypal not working

I have an issue with iTunes and Paypal. First off, Apple support has been NO HELP! Last email from them said I should see about the fee based or expert service!?!?!?! I the support was nothing but 3 days of wasted time with them.
My problem is that iTunes needed me to re-verify my payment with iTunes which when I tried to do this Paypal setup the billing agreement then the browser was set to reopen iTunes but it just sits there in iTunes for me to continue again and starts over with Paypal billing agreement every time.
I have tried on different machines and different we browsers with the same problem. I have talked to paypal and they said everything is fine on their end and the billing is setup fine for iTuens to use so they say it is not a Paypal issue.
Anybody have ANY ideas for me to try? (iTunes support people need NOT reply since you have been no help at all except for trying to get more money of me)
    Thanks

You DONT want to link your PayPal with Itunes because it has been used to extract money from peoples PayPal accounts for about a year. I got hit for 100 dollars on Xmas eve. Apple is hidding the facts about this, but PayPal is refunding money to others (and me I hope). No one seems to really identify how this is happening, some say pfishing, some say an Itunes hack - bottom line is don't buy ANYTHING on Itunes if you can help it, and surely don't set up any automatic payments for anything. Live support at Apple has been acting like they don't know what you're talking about for some time, and they simply tell you to send it all in an email and they will look into it. (They have been doing this for nearly a year, and must have about a million emails that they need to get back to the senders on - lol
I think that some of the apps that are free for the IPhone are actually logging keystrokes - but no one seems to be looking into a way to actually protect the phone with good spyware and anti fraud cleanup capacity - at least with any app that i would trust (Norton - McAfee). I sure wouldn't take a free security app from a IPhone or IPod developer !!

  • ITunes and Quicktime Trouble

My iTunes was working fine but then I upgraded to iTunes version 6.0.5, only my music files will play now and all my music videos and other quicktime video formats don't work at all. In fact it say there is a problem with iTunes and it needs to shut down. I have tried to uninstall-reinstall but nothing I try fixes it.
Can anyone recommend something I can try to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Thank you Katrina S. for the recommendation. I tried it and the same thing happens. So it must not be anything that windows startup or other services that load up at startup. I believe it's something wrong with this version of Quicktime cause it was working fine before this version.
When I play a song in iTunes it plays fine. When I play a music video the program shuts down and the report a problem to Microsoft box pops-up. The same thing happens if I just have Quicktime only loaded. At that point I was trying all the taskbar options, that's when I found out about the update problem. I wasn't really trying to see if there was an update cause I have the latest version now. But the error I did get I should not have gotten, right? It should just come back and say you have the latest version, no updates available.
I have Norton Internet Security with Norton Anti-Virus installed with the latest updates installed. Run a virus check, no viruses reported.
At this point I really don't know what to try next. Can you think of anything else? Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks again folks.

  • Can not install itunes and have all requirements. AM I MISSING SOMETHING?

I recently brought and Ipod nano and wanted to install itunes before I received it. I already had quicktime and that is working beautifully. When I downloaded itunes from the internet, the download seemed to work, but when I tried to open it after the installation nothing happened. I disabled my norton antivirus when I was completing it and misconfigured my computer... I don't know what else to do for I am at my wits end for I have removed and installed this application several times. Can you help?
Also, I do have the service pack 2 for windows.

What in the world do you mean by misconfigured my computer? Do you mean you tried MSCONFIG??
In your processes tab (hit CTRL ALT DEL, click on processes) you see itunes and Quicktime? If you do, do they stay or flash away?
Did you turn off Norton prior to launching iTunes to see if it helps at all? Once you get iTunes working, you will have to configure Norton to not block iTunes. Post back

  • Fixes to see CD's in ITunes and check for updates

I was having two problems with ITunes after upgrading to version 6. CD's wouldn't show up in itunes and if i checked for updates it would say "the itunes server can not be contacted, please check your internet or try again later" My internet connection was working fine.
The solution that fixed both was with Norton Internet Security but I would guess similar software could cause the same problem. Go to Norton Internet security, click on status and settings; personal firewall; configure button; programs tab; select apple itunes and change from blocked to automatic or permit all, clicked ok and relauched itunes.
I actually thought it would only fix the update issue but was pleasantly suprised that ITunes can see cd's again. I hope this helps.

    well done, Herman!
I actually thought it would only fix the update issue but was pleasantly suprised that ITunes can see cd's again.
yep ... you're about the third person i've seen accidentally solve a CD recognition problem by fixing their other Norton problems. i'm starting to ask people about Norton if they don't get CDs showing up in their source lists ...
