ITUNES AND OPTIMIZATION ON DRIVE C

My itunes really causes my computer to fragment--is this common? Any way to prevent same?

Yeah, If you delete the file from your computer you CAN NOT get it off from your ipod and back onto your computer unless you buy/get a program to do that. I would strongly advise you to backup all of your files on either a CD or DVD disc, external hard drive, or some kind of removable storage. I say this because ipod's have alot of problems and you will need to restore at one point or another and that will delete all of your songs from your ipod. So back those files up! ;D

  • Deleting Tracks from Itunes and from Hard drive

    Hiya
I used to click delete in Itunes and it would remove the track from both Itunes and my hard drive.
However no it only deletes from Itunes, any way to get it back to how it was?
    Cheers

I was having this problem and managed to find a solution.
I had to change my iTunes folder to the same folder that my music was actually located in.
    In iTunes:
Edit -> Preferences... -> Advanced -> (iTunes Music Folder Location) Change..
    Hope this helps some people.

  • Help: itunes and external hard drive

I bought 2 TB Seagate external hard drive just so I can put all my music/movies/tv shows on it so I can free up space on the laptop. I followed these instructions from Apple's website... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364
What I've read was after the above was done I could hook up the external, hook up my iphone and I would be able to use itunes as I normally would b/c it was getting my music (& stuff) from the external but I could never do it. Last night everything kept giving me the exclamation point and saying it couldn't locate the file. I tried to load the music from the external to itunes so I did that in itunes with add file/folder to itunes and it duplicated a lot of my music BUT I was able to play some of the files. So I started deleting the exclamation point ones and this morning I was going pick up where I left off and it has been nothing but ****. Nothing would play and itunes kept not responding. So I uninstalled itunes (exactly how apple website said too) thinking and praying I might start from scratch b/c at this point I was boiling and I was done. So now after reinstalling itunes it is still not responding and nothing will play.
My hard drive still shows all the files but won't play.
I was simply trying to save space but simple is not what i've got!!!!!!
    Thanks- Megan

Windows is probably changing the drive letter of the exHD after you plug in the ipod. Isn't that nice, it can do that without telling you?
For instance you started ituens and made the library while the exHD was F:
Then you plug in the ipod and the windows changes it so the ipod has F:
Now itunes is lost so you get the !
You need to assign the drive letter to be permanent on the exHD. Use windows disk manager.
You an also assign a permanent drive letter to your ipod.
My advice is to pick letters far down in the alphabet.

  • Apple TV, iTunes and my hard drive free space

    Hello,
Not sure if anybody has posted this question already. Here it goes.
¿Is it possible to leave some content just in the AppleTV without syncing it to the iTunes? I have a MacBookPro with 100 Gb hard drive; my Apple TV is 160 GB and my content is around 25 GBytes of Movies and 35 Gbytes of TV Shows plus some 2 Gigs of music. Now the issue is that, everytime i bought some movies/songs in the AppleTV it's being transfered to my iTunes in my MacBook and im running out of space like crazy!
So, is it possible to leave in the AppleTV just the content i bought from the iTunes store without syncing it with my iTunes and my Mac hard drive?
And, is it possible to transfer the (movies/tv shows) purchases i've made in my iTunes to my AppleTV so i can free space?
    Regards.

So in essence, if you buy a 160 GB ATV and only have a MACBOOK w/ 80 GB, you can only use less than half the space available on your ATV...that *****! I wonder what the best external storage device is for ease of play of content? I hate adding extra equipment....

  • How can I delete files from iTunes AND my hard drive? It used to be very obvious in iTunes but I no longer see that option.

I used to easily be able to delete songs from my hard drive and library through iTunes but I no longer see that option. Is there a way to do that or a workaround of some kind?

Are these songs in the iTunes media folder shown in iTunes prefs > Advanced?
Only songs in this location will be deleted from the HD when delting from iTunes.
    Also, iTunes prefs > Advanced.
    Click Reset Warnings.
If you are deleting from a playlist, it will only delete from that playlist.
Hold Shift and press Delete to remove from the playlist and from the library.

  • Two computers with iTunes and one external drive

Hope someone has an idea.....I have internet at work, but not at home. I do have iTunes8 on both, but can not download or store my music library on the work computer. I have created a large music library on the home computer already and now need to get some missing album art and track info. How can I move the library to the external drive and then use the iTunes on my office computer to get the art and track info then take it back home?

  • Problem; itunes and external hard drive

I saved my musics to my external hard drive and imported them to my itunes library, and tried to modify their tags, but everything in info section was inactive and couldn't be modified. but once i move the file to internal drive, it works fine no matter where it is stored afterwards. what's the problem here? I've already tried deselecting the read-only attribute.

You would have to change the tags while working inside the external drive. Then when you look at them through iTunes you will see the changes that you made.

  • ITunes and CD/DVD Drive Control

Hi..I can't use my CD/DVD drive for any reason UNLESS iTunes is running at least in the background. It's like iTunes has taken over complete control of my drive. I would like to be able to use the drive for other things (photos, etc.) without having to first run iTunes. Anyone have any ideas about this? Thanks,
    Alan

    Hi all,
I have a Satellite P30-110. I have tried assigning specific controls to the CD/DVD buttons of my laptop to Winamp but everytime I do it reverts to a default hotkey identifying code.
For example if I want the Play/Pause button to act as a hotkey for the Play button in Winamp and I enter it into the Hotkey setting it comes up as: 0x1770001 but when I click add it reverts to: 0x1000000
Can you tell me why this is or how to stop this from happening.
    Thanks!

  • Problems using iTunes and my external drive.

So I initially had a little trouble getting my iTunes to work smoothly with my external drive, a My Book 1Tb, but after a lot of trouble shooting and help from people on the forum I got it and it worked brilliantly. But now, it seems to have run out of gas, the drive is on (indicated by the blue light on the front of the case) but there is no disk image on my desktop and no matter how many time I 1) search for the drive, 2) disconnect it physically from the computer and reconnect it, 3) shut everything down and boot back up it is still unresponsive. I started having problems with my TimeMachine saying it could not back up files onto the disk and couldn't figure that problem out either. And now this, I am really hoping it isn't the drive, even though I thought it was. However, my Mac (iMac G5) has really been acting up now too.
Every time I try to verify and repair the disk permissions in DiskUtility it freezes while still verifying. And my iTunes has been locking up and constantly unresponsive. I am not that savy with technology and so I am now at the end of my rope.
Please help me solve my issues?

You might want to take this over to the Leopard discussion group since it really sounds like it is a drive or computer issue. It will get better attention that way.

  • Windows iTunes and Mac Hard Drive format

I use my iPod in a PC for iTunes. Can I use it as a hard drive for a mac as well? Please advice.
    Thanks!!!
    ~Ferd

As a matter of fact, you can.
When you use your iPod with Windows, it formats the hard drive as FAT32, which the Mac can also read. But, in order to use it with the Mac, you'll need to put it into disk mode. You can do this by resetting the iPod (slide the hold switch on, then off, then hold Menu and Select; the iPod will reset, but continue to hold whiel you see the Apple logo. In a few seconds, you'll see "Do Not Disconnect". Your iPod is now in Disk Mode, and your Mac will recognize it as such.)
Also, when you're done, don't forget to eject the iPod. If you don't you could lose data, and no one likes that.

  • ITUNES AND MY CDROM DRIVE

Got ipod nano for xmas. Used the itunes disk that came with it to install itunes. This in turn erased my cd drive so i couldnt play cds or use the drive. I even tried installing the version on the apple website. I phoned a computer helpline and they said i would have to restore my computer to factory settings and download the version off the internet and not the disk. After losing 15 months of college work and my wedding photos the itunes did the same damage again. I am so upset that i can not use my ipod and my computer has lost everything. is anyone having the same problem.

I had the same problem after installing version 11, my CD/DVD drive was disabled/uninstalled completely.
I restored version 10.7 to get my iTunes functionality back using a backup i created before the upgrade.
Unfortunately, not being a PC wiz, I had to contact DELL support to fix the problem as a simple reinstall of the drivers failed to fix the problem. I am fortunate to still have hardware support as the PC is only 7 months old. DELL thankfully were fully aware of the problem and deleted the "Upper & Lower Filters" from my registry ("how to" available from a Google search for anyone confident enough to do this alone).
I still get the request to reinstall iTunes software on starting itunes, but for now I just click OK and move on and iTunes works fine (using version 10.7). I will probably reinstall 10.7 after doing another backup, but for now I don't need to and can do without the added grief.
DELL said this was a common problem that is easily fixed, but as yet are unaware of any further issues.
I have an Dell Inspiron 620, running on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS with 6GB Ram
Hope this helps, if nothing more than assuring you that you are not alone.

  • ITunes and Three Hard Drives...

Is it possible to do this: One iTunes Library containing music and video content. I want to keep all music files on one hard drive (A) all movie files on another hard drive (B) and all TV shows on another drive (C) and have the iTunes Library file remain on the primary hard drive? Is it possible to use the iTunes application to see all the content of all three drives if all the drives are plugged into the computer thereby freeing up space on my internal hard drive? Many Thanks for your input.

Yes it is possible. However, iTunes does not have any facility for putting certain kinds of content into certain drives, so as you add new material you will manually have to put it in the right place.
Also, to keep your stuff where you put it and only where you put it, go to Preferences and turn off the options for "Keep..." and "Copy..."

  • Question on iTunes libraries on external drives

Back a few years ago I put my itunes music library lived in a NAS drive. If the drive was not mounted however when you launched iTunes the library would reset resulting in a blank iTunes.
This was such a deal breaker for me in the end I ditched the nas.
Now I have my itunes library on an external USB Harddrive. If for some reason the drive is not attached when launched, all that happens is you see your library of music but when you select anything a little alert icon goes next to it with a warning the music could not be found. When you attach the harddrive all is well again.
A friend has an extreme base station with his music folder on. And has just explined to me the self same issue as I used to have.
Can someone explain why iTunes will sometimes work fine, and sometimes reset depending on how it feels? Is there a way to predict this, and more importantly ensure that iTunes simply says it cannot find the tune, and not reset the whole library. Which is a most odd behaviour anyhow.

Your iTunes folder on your Startup Drive (in your USER>MUSIC>ITUNES folder) contains a file that is the roadmap to all of your songs, ratings, playlists, etc. Your iTunes application (in the applications folder on the startup drive) is, well, the application (like an engine) that runs iTunes.
By default, your iTunes Library (where all your actual MP3 files are stored) is in that iTunes folder (in your USER>MUSIC>ITUNES folder). However, when you store it on an external drive, you usually change it's location (in Preferences) so that iTunes knows where the Library is located.
So.....what's probably going on is that you have iTunes set up right for an external drive and it will run properly when that drive is plugged in. iTunes knows where everything is because all that info is contained in the file I mentioned. When you start iTunes and your external drive is not plugged in, iTunes will default to the iTunes Library in the folder on your Startup Drive (USER>MUSIC>ITUNES folder), which is probably empty. It knows where all your songs are on that external drive, but can't access them b/c the drive is off or disconnected.

  • My computer crashed while updating my iPhone, wiped out all my songs from my phone, iTunes and hardrive.  Had over 2500 songs, anyway to get these back?

I lost all my songs off my phone, iTunes and my hard drive when iTunes was updating my phone.  I had over 2500 songs that I've collected over YEARS, is there anyway to get the music back?  Or do I really need to start my collection all over again?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your comptuer for just such an occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
In the U.S, yo can use the new icloud beta version to retrieve itunes purchases.  Open itunes store, click Purchased under Quick Links
