ITunes and Quicktime 7 install errors

Hi folks
Had no probs with these programs at all until the v7 release. Been running Quicktime Pro and iTunes for a wee while on version 6. When I run the iTunes v7.07 installer I get "The installation of Quicktime did not complete successfully. iTunes needs Quicktime." and it quits back to desktop after that (windows xp pro that is).
I've read some other posts about similar problems, so tried uninstalling itunes and quicktime completely, however, iTunes has gone, but Quicktime won't uninstall now. It's gone from Add/Remove programs, it's "Uninstall Quicktime" icon starts up an installshiel wizrd box then just disappears with no effect. I tried reinstalling the new Quicktime-only installer over the top, same problem...errors during install.
So now, I can't install/reinstall an updated Quicktime, can't uninstall the Quicktime Pro I've already got, I have no iTunes on my machine any more and no way of getting it back on, cos the installer won't work without this Quicktime problem being sorted!! ARRRGGHHH!!!
Any ideas folks? I've tried safe mode...Quicktime isn't listed under Add/Remove programs in there either. I'm thinking I'm gonna have to rebuild my laptop again...I spose it could do with a spring clean, though ideally I'd like to not have to!
Cheers muchly in advance

Hey l33bert,
This article will help troubleshoot this issue: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976
Make sure your logged in as an administrator and security software is disabled. Start at "Empty your Temp directory and restart" and continue down th earticle. It does link to the installer cleanup utility, that blackhillsjen mentioned, and shows steps on howto use it.
some people also prefer to install from Quicktime stand-alone installer: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html

    unfortunately it doesn't go anywhere!
itunes will not start because of this either, it says it has a problem and needs to close.
I have tried installing older versions of itunes,Quicktime;un-installing,re-installing,installing seperately, from different sites as well as apple, butit ends up the same.
im only running windows firewall and AVG anti virus.
can anyone help me as to why i can't install them especially Quicktime as it seems i need that for itunes and i need itunes to load the ipod!
Please help if you have any ideas, i've been trying now for 5 hours!!!!

    Try installing from here:

If that doesn't work, try and use Microsoft's Cleanup Utility and then reinstall Quicktime/iTunes:

Make sure it's a new and fresh download from:

Thanks for the phone No. I was having a problem with Quicktime which I couldn,t resolve by checking the discussion forums but that phone No. was a great help. Alhough you are talking to a call centre somewhere in the world and have to be careful with the language difficlties it was a help and it,s a shame Apple don't make this No. more easily available, so well done for finding that No.

  • Installing iTunes and QuickTime on an HP laptop running Windows 7.

    I get error 2738 when:
              installing todays downloads or when
uninstalling a preinstalled 2009 version of QuickTime.
I have seen and successfully applied the solution offerred at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1331.
    Twice.
Restarted the computer and applied that solution again, and again with the message indicating success.
And each time get the error 2738 message.

I also looked through the earlier messages and saw something about
a logon as a simple user.
Did this and then noticed the uninstaller in QuickTime folder.
Used this and QuickTime uninstalled without error (2738 or anything else).
Continued to be logged on as this simple user.
Ran the iTunes installer (answering yes to security questions).
Installed both iTunes and QuickTime without error.

  • ITunes and Quicktime will not launch

I cannot get my iTunes or Quicktime to launch. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, upgraded, and tried several fixes that I found on this discussion board. No Luck! I'm using XP Pro SP3. When I first installed iTunes, it worked, but then quit working about 4 weeks later. I'm using the latest versions of both iTunes and Quicktime.

The error message you are getting suggests that you do have one of the problem codec packs installed on your system or you have had in the past.
Quicktime does not install Quicktime.cpl in the system32 directory.
It is possible that one of them was installed without you knowing with other software, I think Storm may get installed with other things although I can't name anything.
You must look for the things on my list and uninstall them if you find them. Check in Add/Remove programs to see if there is an entry there.
When you have uninstalled the problem items go on to the next stage. If you can't find anything you had better go on as well.
Download the stand alone Quicktime (the one without iTunes):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
Now Remove Quicktime using the method in this article (just Quicktime):
    XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
When you come to your C:\Windows\system32\ folder you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.
    Restart you computer
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check if it starts.
If it does you are in a position to find out if iTunes is OK.

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on 25 June 2010. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Itunes and Quicktime errors when installing

HELP! I tried installing the latest version of Itunes, but I keep receiving a variety of error messages. When I install the Itunes and Quicktime bundle, I get "Error Code: -3" and when I try to install the standalone Quicktime, I get a bunch of messages saying that a file cannot be found, then error message 1714, and then to consult the Windows Installer help (Msi.chm). I tried to manually remove the old Itunes and Quicktime, but it won't work. Any information on the topic would be greatly appreciated.

  • ITunes and Quicktime Error after automatice Apple update, need help!!!

So I currently have a new labtop with windows vista. I have been runining iTunes for the pass 3 months already no problems. The Apple automatic update has never caused any problems till now. Quicktime needed to be updated today, and I accecpted the update, prior to that iTunes and Quicktime was working properly. Once the quicktime update was complete, it restarted my computer like usual. Then when I tried to open iTunes this error came up:
"iTunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration"
Now I checked the audio configuration and nothing was changed or anything, that has not been touched at all, so I still think it had to do with the update. The next error was came up when I tried to open Quicktime and it read:
    "Runtime Error!
    Program C://ProgramFiles/QuickTime/QuickTimePlayer.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information"
So as long as I have been using Quicktime and iTunes I have never encountered this, I tried to re-install but the error kept coming up after it was installed. Please help me out!

  • Error Messages for iTunes and Quicktime, what do I do?

Hello, I'm in need of some help.
Let me walk you all through what I did for the last 4 hours:
(important note: I suck at far too much computer stuff, so I am fully aware that as you read the following, at certain points I probably made the problem much worse than it needed to be, I am not proud of this, but everything you read did happen, stupid as it probably was for me to pursue the problems in the particular way that I did. Hindsight is 20/20.)
I updated my iTunes v7.7 to v8.0 today, and after trying it out for a while decided that I didn't like it and wanted to go back to what I was using before.
So, because I didn't know what else to do, I tried to re-install the original iTunes software that came with my iPod (a 20gig classic I bought in 2004). That version of iTunes was v6.0 (again, 3 years ago).
Part way through the installation process, I got a message that said that, because I had a newer version of iTunes on the computer already, it wouldn't install the version on the disk.
So I uninstalled v8.0, restarted my computer, and installed the v6.0 from the CD-ROM I had.
It was then that I found I had NONE of the 6000+ songs in my iTunes window. I checked my computers files to find that they were still in the library, but my iTunes screen was completely devoid of all my music.
So I tried to get it all back on the player. I discovered that by right-clicking "Play" for the individual files from the folders in my iTunes that they would come up on the player, but that meant that I'd be clicking in 6000+ songs, one by one, till they were all back. I didn't want to do that.
So I tried a system restore (again, read "important note" at top of post). After that happened and I was looking at my desktop again, tried opening iTunes, and it gave me a message that said:
"iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
And it asks if I wanna send an error report. I decline, then try opening Quicktime. Same message. So I try to uninstall both programs (i know, i know, "important note"), and iTunes uninstalls, Quicktime does not, because, as my computer puts it, "a fatal error occurs."
But since I have iTunes uninstalled, I go to apples site and download iTunes v8.0 again. After waiting for all that to get done, I get the same error message.
So I peruse this very discussion forum, and after looking for a good while at what is being recommended I go to a site and download v7.7 again.
Again, I get the same error message.
So here I am. I've tried working it out myself for the last 4 hours, and I seem to have made things worse.
So please, please, PLEASE, I ask for any help you can provide.
Can I get my iTunes back?
    Is my Quicktime corrupted now?
    Am I totally screwed?

I had the same problem when I went to upgrade to 8 and then downgrade back to 7.7. To fix this is a little involved, but you can do it. Let me put it this way, I talked my mother through it on the phone, and she has a hard time finding the power button So no worries, I'll help you get back up and running. I am running Vista now, so I am going off of memory for Vista, so bear with me.
    I would do the following:
    1. Uninstall both iTunes and Quicktime by going to Control Panel-Add Remove Programs, and choosing first Quicktime then iTunes.
    2. Clean your registry. Easy now, it is not that hard. To do it, go to http://www.ccleaner.com/download and download CCleaner. It is free and has NO spyware. Install it and run the registry cleaner. It will remove any trace of both programs from the registry. Now you have 2 choices.
3a. Now I would install iTunes 8. Because you already installed it once, it converted its database file that it uses to track the library and play lists up to the iTunes 8 standard.
3b. If you have no problem loosing your playlists and library settings, you can go back to iTunes 7.7. To do this, first search for "itunes.ttl". To do this, go to Start-Search Files and Folders- and type in "iTunes.ttl" Once the search finishes, it will tell you where it is located. Navigate there using Windows Explorer or My Computer and delete it. Now you can install iTunes 7.7 with out any errors. You will not loose any files! just your playlists and it will not remember what is in your library.
As far as adding your songs again, did you try to re-importing your music? If you go to the file menu-add folder to library. It will bring up a dialogue box that will allow you to browse to the folder with your music.
Let me know if this works. I will help in anyway I can.
    Good Luck,
    linesma

  • Itunes and Quicktime wont install

When I tried to update my iTunes and Quicktime recently, it succesfully downloaded, began installing, and once the progress hit Quicktime, and error showed "an older version of quicktime cannot be removed." Now the issue is, that before this happened, the update had already removed the older version of iTunes. However, it was unable to install the newest version due to this quicktime issue. So here I sit. Help?
    -D

once the progress hit Quicktime, and error showed "an older version of quicktime cannot be removed."
Most probably that's an issue with the installation database in the QuickTime.msi file.
Unfortunately, these sorts of msi-related troubles have gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we need to hunt down a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for *at least version 3.0* of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility.
In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes 9.2 again. Does the install go through properly this time?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

  • Installed itunes and quicktime 7.1.3 but....

I installed the new itunes so i could buy some movies but when i went too open it it said error- cannot open file need quicktime 7.1.3 too run - so I reinstalled it 3 times and it didn't work, so then i just intalled quicktime 7.1.3 and it still didn't work. So now i cant use itunes.

when i went too open it it said error- cannot open file need quicktime 7.1.3 too run - so I reinstalled it 3 times and it didn't work, so then i just intalled quicktime 7.1.3 and it still didn't work. So now i cant use itunes.
here's what we'll try first with that one.
first, completely remove your existing itunes and quicktime using the instructions from the following document:
Removing iTunes and QuickTime for Windows
second, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to check for any leftover itunes or quicktime installation configuration information. if you find any, remove it with CleanUp.
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
now restart the PC. download and save a copy of the itunes 7.0.1.8 installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    iTunes 7.0.1.8 Installer
if that install goes through okay, restart the PC and try to launch itunes again. does it launch okay this time, or do you get an error message? if you get an error message, what does it say this time?

  • ITunes and Quicktime Error Messages

    Hello all,
I get the following error message when I try to open iTunes and Quicktime from my desktop:
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that's unavailable."
When I tried to uninstall iTunes I got the following error message:
"This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."
When I went to the specific folder(s) that they are in, I was able to open iTunes and Quicktime without a problem.
Has anyone ever encountered an issue like this? I just started having problems with these programs.
Thank you all in advance for your help.

I figured out the problem. I had to use the Windows Installer Cleanup. I haven't had any other problems thus far.
    Thanks again.

  • Massive problems installing itunes and quicktime

Hi, to anyone who can help me:
I cannot install iTunes or quicktime. Just bought a new ipod 30gb. v.excited. Downloaded itunes. gives me error messages when i try to install.
They read: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
    and
"The installation of Quicktime did not complete successfully. ITunes requires Quicktime."
I have tried using CCleaner to clean up my hard drive and uninstall both itunes and quicktime (old and dodgy new versions). I have tried using 7-zip to unpack the new downloaded files and install from the .msi and other .exe files.
I have tried installing the standalone Quicktime (which wont install properly) and then installing itunes (which won't install properly, coz quicktime is not installed properly)
I have tried rebooting my computer between these attempts
I have tried it with my virus-protection software off as one thread here suggested.
I am logged on as administrator for all these attempts and i'm at my wits end.
    I have tried everything!
please help me if you have suggestions.
    Thanks

They read: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
    interesting.
did you have an earlier version of itunes and/or quicktime installed on the PC? in particular, an itunes 6.0.x or lower version, and/or a QuickTime 7.1 or lower version?
(checking on this because i'm wondering if there's a DCOM permissions issue involved with the uninstall of your previous versions of itunes/quicktime.)

  • Error - 1603 on installation of itunes and quicktime

Ive read and trouble shot various threads in this... heres my problem
I tried installing, and it didnt work... after that i tried uninstalling both itunes and quicktime, the itunes never showed up in my add/remove section... using the windows install clean up and this took off the itunes... im assuming. ok after that i tried deleting everything from quicktime. I did the add/remove and took it off. Now im trying to install quicktime and the installer wont even start, when it does start it gets about 80% done and then gives me the 1603 message. Same scenerio with Itunes. I am installing from the desktop not from the internet.
    heres what the message reads.
Error - 1603 Fatal Error During Installation
Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information
I put off so much work to try to get this fixed... i need some assistance.
    thanks in advance.

    Hello everybody,
I have exactly the same problem as Mark and Paul, both with QT7 install and itunes install but it turned a bit differently.
Before having the -1603 error, I had, for each of the both installs (QT & itunes), a registry error "impossible to open the HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes....."
I did all was possible, at least to me(delete temp files, uninstall all QT & itunes applications, run Windows Installer Cleaner ...), and I finally manage to install QT V7 but the error still remains for itunes !
Like Paul, I can't find the select Local Users and Groups under
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > System Tools
I tried the "%windir%\registration" solution but after opening the folder , I don't know what to do !!??!!
    I've got an empty "CRMLog" folder, a "{02D4B3F1-FD88-11D1-960D-00805FC79235}.{E6259674-0B1E-4459-893A-8BC3F8707995}. crmlog file, a R00000000000b and a R00000000000c files.
What should I try with those files, pleeeeaaaase ? Helpppp : I'm not THAT good !
PS A may be useful precision : this occurs with an old version of itunes (V5, I think)
    PS2 : in the register at "HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\.cdda\OpenWithProgids", I have a iTunes.cdda file --> should I try and delete it ?
    Thanks in advance
    Marie
