  • ITunes and Quicktime will not launch

I cannot get my iTunes or Quicktime to launch. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, upgraded, and tried several fixes that I found on this discussion board. No Luck! I'm using XP Pro SP3. When I first installed iTunes, it worked, but then quit working about 4 weeks later. I'm using the latest versions of both iTunes and Quicktime.

The error message you are getting suggests that you do have one of the problem codec packs installed on your system or you have had in the past.
Quicktime does not install Quicktime.cpl in the system32 directory.
It is possible that one of them was installed without you knowing with other software, I think Storm may get installed with other things although I can't name anything.
You must look for the things on my list and uninstall them if you find them. Check in Add/Remove programs to see if there is an entry there.
When you have uninstalled the problem items go on to the next stage. If you can't find anything you had better go on as well.
Download the stand alone Quicktime (the one without iTunes):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
Now Remove Quicktime using the method in this article (just Quicktime):
    XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
When you come to your C:\Windows\system32\ folder you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.
    Restart you computer
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check if it starts.
If it does you are in a position to find out if iTunes is OK.

  • ITunes and QuickTime Failing to Open

    Hi
I have just been forced to buy a new hard drive as my previous one failed totally unexpectedly. Hence, my OS (XP Pro) is newly installed, as is all my other software. Having downloaded and installed iTunes 6 I tried to initiate it but it fails to open. I can see the iTunes.exe in processes but it will not close when I try to kill it. It locks with a memory usage of 12,848 K every time. I can kill all other iTunes/iPod processes but not the iTunes.exe. My registry has no errors, I have no spyware (according to the MS AntiSpyware Beta) and no viruses.
I have all the essential updates for XP Pro plus a selection of optional ones. My hardware drivers are also up to date.
From a quick browse of the forums it seems that Norton Internet Security 2005 might be to blame for my problems. One of the pieces of advice I read was to use AVG software as an alternate (which I have used before and liked) as Norton IS 2005 stops iTunes from loading. I am willing to do that as a short term option, but NIS has always been my security system of choice and I would prefer to have the option to keep using it.
What I would like to know is whether it is true that Norton IS 2005 causes this conflict and if there is a way around it without changing my choice of security or is NIS 2005 totally incompatible with iTunes? I may well be upgrading to NIS 2006 soon and would also like to know if this issue will reoccur if I do. The current conflict also seems to hugely slow down my shutting down speed.
I hope you can quickly resolve or answer my questions.
    Thank you for your time.

    Hi blaccrichard,
This may help you. Turn NIS 2005’s Personal Firewall OFF, (turn it OFF Permanently until your ready to turn it back on) then click CONFIGURE. ( Might be a good idea to disconnect from the Internet at this stage)
Under the PROGRAMS tab remove any reference to Apple iTunes or iTunes or iTunes Helper Module or anything related. and reboot.
After coming back go back to NIS 2005’s Personal Firewall, click CONFIGURE. Under the PROGRAMS tab click ADD at the bottom, a SELECT A PROGRAM window will pop up. Add the following files one at a time, iTunes.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, QuickTimePlayer.exe, qttask.exe, QTInfo.exe. The last 3 are found in your Quicktime folder where that is in your system. Click OK. Turn NIS 2005’s Personal Firewall ON, and try starting iTunes again.
It seems the Quicktime files were never automatically entered into NIS 2005’s Personal Firewall allowable programs listing. Adding them manually should help. I also noticed that from my previous version of iTunes the program listed in the Firewall was named Apple iTunes and not iTunes after I upgraded to 6.

  • Upgraded to Quicktime 7.5 - Now iTunes and Quicktime Will Not Launch

After installing the software update, when I try to start Quicktime or iTunes, the icon will bounce, the beach ball will then spin and then the programs crash.
I have sent crash reports to Apple (each time it says something about kernel errors).
I have tried restarting the system multiple times but to no avail. Any ideas?

  • Updated iTunes and QuickTime, now neither will launch

I installed iTunes 7.1 and QT 7.1.5 tonight. Immediately after restarting, I was unable to launch Firefox 2.0.0.2 or reinstall it. In researching that problem, I've discovered I cannot launch iTunes or QT Player.
With each app, the triangle appears next to the icon in the dock when I launch it, but then the color wheel spins for awhile, the system hangs, and the application stops launching. There's no error dialog. The Finder appears to restart, too, because the Dock and the Finder bar disappear and reappear.
Any suggestions for what to restall, which files to trash, etc?
    Thanks.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

TD, thanks for the suggestions, but I'm still stuck. Here's what I've tried:
    1. Deleted the com.apple.iTunes.plist file, restarted iTunes and it would not launch.
    2. Created new account, tried launching iTunes. It did not launch.
    3. Downloaded and reinstalled iTunes and QuickTime, then restarted. iTunes, QuickTime, and Firefox would not launch.
    4. Re-reinstalled iTunes and Quicktime, restarted, still unable to launch iTunes or QuickTime.
Any further ideas? I'm stumped! Thanks.

  • ITunes and QuickTime Player give me a QTCF.dll error when trying to launch

When i try to open iTunes on my laptop it gives me an error saying:
iTunes.exe - entry point not found
    The procedure entry point
QTCF_CFUniCharGetUnicodePropertyDataForPlane could not be located in the dynamic link library QTCF.dll
i also get a error for quick time player displaying the same message for Quick Time.exe
i have uninstalled both programs and reinstalling them several times. i have also check to see if they work on other accounts on my laptop. they do not work.
    Message was edited by: Nemesis2010

The procedure entry point QTCF_CFUniCharGetUnicodePropertyDataForPlane could not be located in the dynamic link library QTCF.dll
The most common cause of that one is a misplaced older version of the QTCF.dll lurking about in your system. On an x64 system, the best place to start looking is in the C:\Windows\sysWOW64\ directory.
Do you see a QTCF.dll lurking in there? If so, try dragging it out onto the desktop. Can you launch iTunes and QuickTime now?

  • ITunes and QuickTime will not work..Yeah, another one

Despite my best efforts to try to solve my problem on my own and not both you kind people, I've been working on and off at trying to get my iTunes working, with no positive results at all. It's honestly been so long, I don't recall what might have sparked the issues, but every time I try to open iTunes or QuickTime they will begin to open but fail, bringing up the common windows error message:
iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
QuickTime Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
So far, I have totally deleted both iTunes and QuickTime twice from my computer- first just through Add/Remove Programs pathways, then more in depth with Registry Crawler to try to remove any traces of the programs- all before re-installing the two programs. Both times have failed, still leaving me unable to open either program, so I've broken down and come here- hoping to find anyone willing to lend a hand to help fix this issue so that I can finally listen to my music the way I used to.

    Perfect information, thanks.
That combination is almost always caused by some application stashing old QuickTime componentry down in your system files. (Codec packs and video converters are the usual suspects, although some Games might do it too.)
Let's go looking for the old stuff.
    1. Open My Computer from the desktop or Start menu.
    2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now in My Computer, open your C drive.
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "system32" folder.
What files and/or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file/folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

  • ITunes and QuickTime doesn't open up on Windows Vista

Hi! I will apreciate all who tries to answer this question.
I have Windows Vista on my HP laptop and I dowloaded iTunes and QuickTime.
I had no problem downloading it, but then opening it came a box.
    It said:
    iTunes has stopped working
Windows can check online for a solution to the problem
-> Check online for a solution and close the program
    -> Close the program
    View problem details

With that combination, we need to check on some other application (apart from QuickTime itself) stashing old QuickTime componentry on the PC in an unorthodox location. (Codec packs and video converters are the usual suspects with that, although some games might do the same.)
So we'll go looking for the older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
First we'll need to change some view settings.
In your Start menu, open Computer.
In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked.

  • Back to square one: new iTunes and QuickTime CRASH, CRASH, CRASH

I've been struggling with iTunes and QuickTime ever since the upgrade to 6.0.4. Everything worked just fine until then, and has worked fine since I got my iPod last June.
A couple of days after the upgrade to 6.0.4 iTune started crashing, with the error message: iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Please note this is only about using iTunes to play music on my computer (my iPod seems to be working fine.)
I've removed iTunes and QuickTime, reinstalled them, and this works for a couple of days, then iTunes starts crashing again (this has now happened twice.)
Strangely, this time, tunes in Party Shuffle at start up (from the last normal exit of iTunes) play just fine, but when I try to play something out of Library or swtich to a different genre or playlist in Party Shuffle, the programme crashes: iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
I've tried opening QuickTime alone, and it fails to open (no error message) it gets as far as the player, then there's a windows "thunk" and QuickTime closes.
So now I will uninstall, reinstall (starting with QuickTime, which seems to be the real culprit here) and maybe it will work for a couple of days. Computers are supposed to save time, not take up time in this way.
I don't seen any sign or word of a new version of QuickTime with a fix to this problem (many seem to be having it). How long do I have to go on this way. Perhaps the best is just to use another Windows Media Player or Nero ShowTime ... these seem to function without any sort of problem.

    Thank you Katrina and MossMan,
I do keep my computer under pretty tight wraps: Outpost firewall, AVG anti-virus, MS Anti-spyware. Ran the Ewido scan as suggested, Ewido did find quite a few cookies it considered of medium threat spyware ... removed these, and this did not resolve the problem with iTunes/QuickTime. Anyway, I'm not sure that cookies can cause programmes to crash?
I still think that it's unlikely that the problem with iTunes and QuickTime starting right after the upgrade to iTunes 6.0.4 and its QuickTime counterpart, is just a coincidence.
And if QuickTime is particularly vulnerable to some malware that none of the security programmes on my machine can find, and malware that has no effect on any other programmes, including other media players, then maybe this vulnerablity should also be something Apple should try to address.

  • ITunes and QuickTime stopped working after an upgrade...

I have been pulling my hair out trying to get my iTunes working again. Here is what I have done already in order:
    1. Does not work regardless of user (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302856)
    2. Tried running with changes to MSCONFIG
    - Ran according to Apple Support Web Site (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538)
    - Ran in Diagnostics mode
    - Ran in /SAFEMODE
    3. Uninstalled and removed from any reference from registry
    4. Removed iTunes configuration files (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302386)
    5. Installed WinInspector Spy and launched iTunes to see what happened. Unfortunately I have not figured out how to copy and paste the log, but it shows the iTunes window class being created, a bunch of other stuff, then the OfficeWatson class, stuff and then the infamous "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. After hitting the Send Error Report, I see the OfficeWatson window being destroyed and that is it. This leads me to believe that the problem is somehow with the outlook integration between iTunes and Windows? So I looked in my Add/Remove programs and sure enough Office and Outlook were upgraded the day after the last time i was able to use iTunes. So I tried uninstalling Office, iTunes and QuickTime. QuickTime refused to uninstalled claiming a fatal error. I then forcably removed it as described in the apple knowledge paper. Another interesting point, when I ran QuickTime, nothing happens, not even a crash message. When I run QuickTime Preferences from the system tray, the dialog shows, but when I click on the FileTypes tab, I get a RUNDLL error: "An exception occurred while trying to run "Shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTime.cpl".
I also tried running StraceNtX.exe against it, but it doesnt create the right environment for iTunes (it thinks it is Windows 2000 and does have the right service pack).
PLEASE can someone help? This is the second time this has happened to me. The first time was on another computer that came with a "real" restore point (not the stupid one Windows has that does not work) and I solved it by simply restoring back in time. This time I do not have that option!
ARGH - I really do not want to have to use Media Player.
Is there a way to force a stack trace? I am a UNIX programmer and not familiar with Windoze.

It sounds as though things have got pretty screwed up. If you couldn't clean things up properly with the MS installer cleaup, there is thread on cleaning up uninstall information in the registry.

I am not sure that I have anything more to offer as you appear to have done most things. Have you tried turning off all security software while doing the install, and doing the MSconfig thing with just Quicktime. Presumably your system is free of malware?
As a matter of interst, what happens if you have the task manager running when you start Quicktime, does it start and then stop, or keep running or not start at all?
A few people seem to have these intractable problems and the forum expert on this has been away since christmas, but you could try searching the forum for "b noir" posts about install/launch problems.

  • ITunes or QuickTime will Not Launch after Install

I received my new iPhone 4 a few days ago & have tried & tried for the past days to make iTunes 10.6 work & also QuickTime 7.7.1.  They both install but when I click on the desk top icon a few seconds pass and an Error Message appears for iTunes & QuickTime that says "iTunes or QuickTime has encountered a problem & needs to close".  The "Error Signature" is as follows for the iTunes;  AppName: itunes.exe  AppVer: 10.6.0.40  ModName: gdiplus.dll  ModVer: 5.2.6002.22509  Offset: 0002 edde.  I have installed/uninstalled til I'm sick.  I have done the control panel Add/Remove in suggested sequence & also removed any leftovers from iTunes and QuickTime from my registry; still no iTunes or QuickTime 7.7.1.  The only QuickTime that will install & work is version 7.1.6.  I am running XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3.  I need iTunes desperately for my new iPhone 4 !!  Please Help !!

Thank you soooo much for explaining the gdiplus.dll error I was receiving.  Before doing your recommended sfc /scannow procedure I did a little more browsing & found the FIX !!! The reason for iTunes not opening was the fault of a CORRUPTED FONT !!  It has taken me all nite to go through a gazillion fonts that I have installed on my computer on a trial & error basis but I did find the FONT that was keeping iTunes from not launching; Dr.PoDecorCyr.ttf , I started out by choosing the larger size Font Files making a new folder on my desk top & taking away & adding back to Windows Font Folder in the Control Panel until I found the culprit.  I hope this info will help others.  In Windows XP go to Start Menu to Control Panel to Fonts. Again Thank You Muchly !

  • Apple programs, Help, Mail, iTunes, Safari, Quicktime will not launch.

Recently we downloaded some upgrades from Apple and now Help, Mail, iTunes, Safari and Quicktime will not launch. The icon dances on the dock, and the operating system records the program as having opened, but the program does not come up and the icon menu on the dock still displays open rather than quit. I have tried re-installing the programs to no avail.

  • Itunes and quicktime wont open when click on it

    Hi,
I am unable to open Itunes or Quicktime on my netbook. I have tried reinstalling the software but it wont work. Please can someone advise how I can get it working.
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

In recent times, the error-message-free iTunes and QuickTime launch failures have been indicating that another application has stashed old QuickTime componentry in your system files. (Those sorts of applications often use the Visual C++ runtimes to keep track of the componentry, so it seems consistent that an update to those could cause the symptoms to flare up on a PC.)
So just in case we'll go looking for older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
