ITunes and Remote Speakers

So, all of a sudden, my remote speakers aren't even showing up as an option at the bottom of the iTunes window. I'm clearly connected to the internet as I'm posting the forum post right now. Any idea why iTunes is suddenly not recognizing my internet connection? Is there some way to force iTunes to look for the connection?
I'm using PowerBook G4 and an Airport Express connected to my home stereo.

  • Itunes missing remote speakers airport express

I have windows xp & itunes. When I updated to itunes 7.1 my remote speakers were missing and i am unable to retrieve them.

The problem turns out to be an incompatibility with Bonjour for Windows. A post by "f00fighter" over in the "iTunes for Windows Upgrade Issues" forum solved it. I quote him below:
    ******Quote***********
Looks like this issue is due to an incompatibility between Bonjour for Windows and iTunes 7.1.0.59 for Windows (thanks toonz!)
To workaround the issue you can stop the Bonjour Service by going to Start \ Control Panel \ Administrative Tools \ Services, then highlight the Bonjour Service and stop it. You might also want to set the Startup status of the Bonjour Service to Manual (or Disabled) to prevent the service from starting automatically the next time you restart you PC.
Note - this is only a temporary fix, and turns off the Bonjour service...so don't do this if you have other applications that rely on the Bonjour Service. A fix from Apple is needed to truly "fix" this issue.

  • Automate iTunes to Remote Speakers

A couple of years ago, I purchased an app Alarm Clock 2, from App Store, which has serviced my purposes until recently.  Up until now, my computer was in my bedroom and I used Alarm Clock 2 to play a Play List in the morning before my alarm went off.
Now that my computer is in another part of my home, I can't use this solution.  I have added a speaker system using AirPlay and for manual operation it works just fine.  However, if I use Alarm Clock 2 to start a play list at a preset time, it plays the list on the computer speakers EVEN IF I HAVE select Air Play in the running copy of iTunes on my iMac.  That is, I select my AirPlay speakers and manually run a play list and it plays through the remote speakers.  If I then have Alarm Clock 2 start a play list changing nothing else, it plays on the computer speakers even though iTunes window shows the AirPlay device still selected.  If I manually start a different (or restart the same) play list, it now plays on the remote speakers.
To summarize, what I want to do is
       1.  Run a play list at a time of day (waking the computer if necessary) and have the music output go to the AirPlay speakers.
    Any ides?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

Some success. But Lion Server 10.7.3 is having trouble with the older g remotes now.
After setting up a few things while talking with Clarke at Apple Server Support we had a Lion 10.7 compatible version of Server Admin 10.7 installed and could reach the server firewall. Short answer: had to turn it off to get the aiport express remotes to accept streams from the server.
The new downside is that Airport Utility 6 can't deal with the older 802.11g airport express remotes. Further the server can't select them if they have been power cycled. The only way to get the server's copy of iTunes 10.5.3 to see the first two g remotes is to restart the whole server. Restarting iTunes isn't enough. Logging out and back in isn't enough. Haven't found a more surgical way to reconnect.
Need to try to punch only the necessary holes in the server firewall and use it instead.
I'd really love to see a very well documented description of the steps that iTunes goes through when connecting to airport express remotes with the differences when running on a server. ALL the steps, including handshaking and those high port numbers and just what keeps getting screwed up, like with the new 10.7.3 server update.

  • ITunes sees remote speakers attached to airport express, but can't connect

"An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "Airport Express". The network connection failed."
    iTunes 9.1(79)
    Airport Extreme Base Station
Early model Airport Express connected to remote speakers
iTunes see the speakers in the drop down menu, and the airport express is connected to my network. I restored the airport express to factory defaults and started over. Same thing. Firmware shows as being current. Express has steady green light.
Any ideas? I am getting ready for my iPad, and need to get this fixed.
    Thanks in advance.

Same problem for me. Ever since I upgraded to 10.6.3 and iTunes 9.1, about once per week I'll get the error message when trying to get iTunes/Airtunes to connect to my older Airport Express (running firmware 6.3) "An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker <insert speaker name here>. The network connection failed." (No error codes are given.)
Airport Utility sees the offending Airport Express just fine (and there's a green light on said AE).
Curiously, a newer AE-n, elsewhere in the house (running firmware 7.4.2) does NOT exhibit this problem.
Simply restarting the offending AE does NOT clear the problem. Restarting the main router - a Time Capsule DOES clear the problem. Alternatively, toggling off the Airtunes functionality on the offending AE, restarting it, then toggling Airtunes back on, and finally restarting it DOES clear the problem (as an alternate to restarting the router). No matter how the problem is cleared, it returns within a week. It's frustrating that the problem cannot be recreated immediately.
Probably not relevant, but the computer on which I'm running iTunes (a Mac Mini) is connected to my TC via ethernet, not wirelessly.
I've tried the suggestion of disabling ipv6. No effect.
I fear the only solution will be to scrap my older Airport Express and replace it with a newer n-model. But before I resign myself to the $100 fix, any more ideas?

  • Safari Compatibility with airport express and remote speakers.

Is there a good reason why Safari shouldn't broadcast sound to remote speakers through Airport Express in the same way that ITunes does. I'm thinking specifically about my Netflix addiction and that I always have to plug directly into a pair of HK speakers rather than play remotely over my whole home audio. I will restrain my capitalist conspiracy theories for now....any thoughts?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the forums!
Netflix haven't updated to comply with Safari 5 yet, but in the meantime they offer the following solution:

  • Using a PC running iTunes as remote speakers

I have two Airport Express in my house, which are great for playing music in different rooms remotely, powered by my primary PC in my office. However, I also am buying a PC for my living room to put above the fireplace. There is no room for another set of speakers for another Airport Express there, and I don't want to buy another one. What'd I'd like to do is use this new PC running iTunes as a set of remote speakers, recognized in iTunes like the Airport Express speakers. That way I could play the same music at the same time in many rooms of my house.
Does anyone know how to do this?
If not, consider this is a feature request, i hope Apple will give it consideration.

    Hello.
Any feature requests can be submitted to the following links below
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/airportexpress.html
*With Airtunes you are able to stream music to multiple speakers meaning
    1. Multiple Airport Expresses connected to Multiple speakers
    2. Multiple Expresses connected to Speakers & also hearing the audio from the computer it is broadcasting from.
Now the bigger question I believe you are asking is can other computers pickup on this broadcast of sound?
Never tried it myself. I am not aware of iTunes being able to pickup the broadcast from the speaker selection in the bottom right hand corner. I am aware of it being able to broadcast it's sound to other speakers on the network though.
Hopefully other users can post their thoughts and how they got this to work. At this current time I know you can connect multiple expresses, and have it broadcast throughout the house based on where each express it is and the speakers they are connected to.

  • ITunes loses Remote Speakers After sleep mode

Whenever I leave my PC unattended for an extended period of time iTunes can no longer find my remote speakers. The only solution is rebooting. The AE light remains green at all times but iTunes just can't connect.
I'm running Windows XP SP2 using AE and iTunes 5.0.1.4 and had this problem even with 4.7. My desktop has an intenet connection no problem so it is re-established when it is woken-up but iTunes does not. This happens whether I leave iTunes open or closed while I leave the PC unattended. Note that I'm not using AE for intenet connectivity. I'm using a d-ling hub/router and a wireless dlink PC card on my desktop. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    -Peter

I also have the very same issue. My Airport Express is working as expected, but If I put my laptop to sleep and then wake it up again, and then I try to re-connect to the Airport Express, it is not connected. I have to either restart the laptop or Airport Express device to get it working again.
    Very fustrating!

  • ITunes and Remote app not pairing

I'm having an incredibly frustrating problem with the Remote app and I'm wondering if anyone knows what to do.
The app has worked fine in the past. I've paired it to my iTunes library successfully and controlled it.
Recently, it has stopped working. When I try to re-pair it with iTunes, one of two things will happen:
1 - I will enter the passcode and iTunes will accept it, and then on the iPhone, I just get the spinning icon and then it times out. Most times when this happens, the library name on the iPhone is blank, even though I have a name set in iTunes. In the past, when this worked right, it had the right name; or
2 - I will enter the passcode in iTunes and it will get stuck on "Verifying Remote Passcode" in iTunes. Then it times out and I'm left with no connection.
So far, in attempting to solve the problem, I've:
+ installed the latest version of iTunes
+ deleted and reinstalled the Remote app on the iPhone
+ rebooted the iPhone and my iMac, and also reset the iPhone (hold down both buttons until the Apple logo appears).
+ changed the iMac's firewall settings to "set access to specific services and applications," added iTunes to the list, and set it to allow incoming connections
+ used the "Forget all remotes" option in the iTunes settings and then tried to pair again.
I've searched google and these message boards and found plenty of others with the same problem, but no real solution (some of the things I did above came from suggestions I saw in these other threads, but none of it worked for me).
The iTunes library and the iPhone are on the same network and in iTunes, the "Look for iPhone and iPod Touch Remotes" option is checked.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

I really can't believe this question has not been answered yet. I'm having the exact same problem others have described. I posted on my blog regarding this issue with screen shots of the error I've been getting: http://ben.kwinix.com/blog/2009/11/20/oh-apple-what-does-this-mean/
My network is more complicated than most: I have an Airport Extreme running a 5 GHz 'N' network and a Netgear routher running a standard 'G' network. The Airport is the primary device and acts as the DHCP server; the Netgear is set up as an extender. I use the Airport to connect my iMac, MacBook, and Apple TV and the Netgear to connect my iPhone and any other 'G' devices that come into the house. All devices when connected to either router are provided an IP address by the Airport in the "10.0.1.x" format. Also, all devices say that the "router" is 10.0.1.1, which is the Airport.
When attempting to connect to any device on the network (either iTunes library or the Apple TV) with the Remote app from the iPhone, I typically get an error regarding a firewall or network settings. Everything is fully updated - latest versions of firmware, OSes, etc.
I've followed the steps outlined in an Apple support article (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1741) without success. Someone out there has to have an answer!

  • Airport Express' no longer available to iTunes as remote speakers

    Hi,
I'm running Windows 7, iTunes 10.6.1.7 and the firmware on my airports is 7.6.1.
I'm having a wierd issue where I can't use iTunes itself to send audio to the airports.  There is no mulitple speaker icon in the lower right corner like there used to be.
My iPhones can select any of the airports as multiple speakers, it works perfectly.  I have Airfoil on my PC and it displays all 3 of the airports correctly and I can send audio to them.  I can even use airfoil to play iTunes to the airports.
So, I know that the PC can connect to them since airfoil is working.  I know the wireless portion is working correctly becuase the iPhones can connect.  It's just iTunes itself.
What's going on here?  Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,

It is common to see strange glitches like this on Win 7.
I suggest you re-boot and see if this fixes it.

  • Express, iTunes and Multiple Speakers

I posted this on the iTunes forum, but thought maybe it goes here. I cannot get itunes to play music to both my AX units. Airtunes works just fine in normal play. I can switch between each AX network. And the "multiple speakers" option shows up when I switch between the AX units. And I have them both updated to the latest firmware (6.3), and the latest version of iTunes. Still, no matter which AX network I pick, it will not let me play music to the other one. I pick AX1 and it lets me play AX 1 and the computer, but not AX2. If I switch over to AX2, I can play AX 2 and the Computer. But I can't get music to all three -- Computer, AX1, AX2. Interestingly, the multiple speakers window shows all three -- just won't send the music to all three at one. NOTE: My Airport Management Utility indicates that both of the AX units post the same IP address. Is that right? Is that the problem? -- david c

I think I solved it. Not sure, but think so. Checked again with Apple. Dunno whythe first one didn't point this out. Says you can broadcast a single iTunes transmission across two AX units ONLY configuring the second one as "bridge" to the first. What I was trying to do was transmit to two AX units each set up as separate networks. I guess it makes sense. The new tech says I keep the first AX network as is, but go into and re-set the second one using the SetupAssistant. Haven't done it yet, but he says I'll be asked if I want the new to "join" the first one. Think I'll try it. Only issue will be if the resulting sound loses any quality that way. If it works, it's what I wanted....sending iTunes to two different stereo systems (great room and patio deck) at the same time.

  • ITunes can't connect to remote speakers PLUS Airport Express p/word problem

I am running iTunes 7.4.1 and have previously been able to play iTunes through remote speakers via an Airport Express . After upgrading iTunes some time ago, I am unable to connect to the AE any more. The AE shows as an option in my iTunes window, but when I select it from the drop down option box bottom right, it just doesn't choose it.
I have read other discussions pertaining to this, and have followed all of those solutions, but to no avail.
I have done a hard reset on the AE restoring it's factory settings thinking I should just start again, and it has been renamed "Base Station Oa369f" so I know this has worked, but when I try to reconfigure it through Airport Utility, it asks for a password. I tried it's old password, and also tried the generic one "public" as stated in the AE setup guide, but it rejects both.
I am keen to figure this out as I'm about to buy a new printer and another AE so I can print wirelessly, but don't want to have the same issues if it's an AE bug that can't be fixed, I would be left with no printer!
I know this is two quite separate problems, but if anyone has any ideas for either I would be really grateful.
    Thanks very much

I have exactly the same problem which has been driving me nuts for the last couple of days. However I am able to access the dropdown list of speakers. I have mine set to multiple speakers, and now it WILL play through my Airport Express again, but only when playing through the internal speakers at the same time. When I try to play solely through the Airport Express it just hangs.
Come on Apple, you need to be regression testing your upgrades far better than this, for something so basic to go wrong.

  • ITunes no longer allowing use of remote app or recognizing remote speakers

Weird problem as all of this worked as of 24 hours ago. I am no longer able to share my music (either via the remote app or between two computers on the same local network) nor will iTunes recognize the existence of remote speakers (again, all worked fine as of yesterday).
I've made no changes to firewall, etc. I've confirmed the network is functioning, the Airport express is connected, all current versions, etc. Firewall allows incoming connections for iTunes. Further, i've tried:
    1) Restarting iTunes, the iMac in question and the iPad
    2) Using remote on two different devices
    3) hard rebooting the airport connected to my stereo
    4) reinstalling iTunes and remote
Home sharing is turned on however the iPad's remote app cannot find any libraries. When i try to add a library outside of home sharing, iTunes doesn't see any device trying to connect.
I'm well stumped. Anyone else finding this issue and are there any suggestions?

Same problem. I'm running itunes 10.1.2.17 under win 7.
Here's what I did to fix the problem. Basically you need to create a new exception in your firewall to allow itunes UDP communication.
    control panel>system & security>Windows firewall.
    Advanced settings>inbound rules
    New Rule> Program > browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and pick itunes.exe
    Allow the connection>next>next
Give it a name like iTunesUDP.
Now click on your new rule "iTunesUDP" and select properties.
Click the protocals and ports tab.
    under protocal type select UDP.
    That should do it.
Let me know if it worked for you.
