Itunes and Windows Explorer crash when ipod attached

Hi, for some reason my ipod has started to crash both my laptop and my home desktop computer whenever i attach it. It shows up in Windows Explorer but if i click on the icon it crashes the window. Similarly, Itunes opens if i attach my ipod but then freezes straight away, but then if i take out my ipod it starts to work fine again. Im starting to think that seeing as this is happening on more than one computer it might be a fault with the ipod. Any ideas?!
O and it's a 120gb ipod classic and im using the most up to date itunes on vista.
Thanks alot

I'm with you on that. By any chance do you have a spare USB cable (or have access to a different one)? If so, try experimenting with connecting using the other cable. Do you still get the freeze with that?

  • Ipod freezes itunes and windows explorer

I have been trying to connect a new 30G Ipod to my Vista computer and everytime I do both Itunes and Windows Explorer freeze. Neither recognize my ipod. I tried to change the drive designation but couldn't because of Explorer freezing. I did run the same Ipod on my XP and everything worked fine so it is a problem with my Vista computer or with the ITunes (7.2.035) software. Any ideas?

Disconnect the printer, use a rear port on your computer and try it again.

  • Windows Explorer crashes when plugging or unplugging ipod touch

Seems something is buggy with Itunes 7 or the Ipod Touch itself. This happens to me on 2 different computers, one Dell and one HP so I doubt seriously if it is the computers themselves. All of my drivers on both systems are up to date.
When I plug in the IPOD it will work and sync, however when I unplug it I get a windows explorer crash each time. Needless to say this is irritating as heck.
    Anyone else having this problem?
    thanks
    Redy4it

I have the same problem, even when i use the eject button. I hate vista but on my pc i have no choice but to run it. Never had any problems on my Macs. i also get a strange error on work pc running XP. It says at first that it doesn't recognize the device running in compatibility mode but then it switches over and works fine. I tend to blame it on Microsoft crap, maybe they are updating their OSes to mess with Apple products.

  • Itunes 7.1 crashes when ipod attached

Everything was fine before I upraded to 7.1
Now when I attach ipod, itunes does not launch. If I launch it first, it freezes when ipod is attached and crashes the system. This happens nine times out of ten.
I have tried uninstalling and re-installing itunes
Does anyone know a solution or a way to get back to version 6, please? I am using XP media player

are you getting any sort of blue screen? if so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
if the blue screen mentions a specific file, let us know what that is called too. (exact spelling, please.)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
if you're not seeing a blue screen (or just a flash of one), we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

  • Ipod not recoginized in itunes and windows explorer but is charging

ok  here's the deal, like it says in the subject line, when I hook it to my pc it charges but isn't recognized by itunes or windows explorer.  I've already reset the ipod (by holding down center and menu button.) and I've already uninstalled and reinstalled itunes.  Just got done checking services.  The ipod service was set to manual, so I restarted it and changed it to automatic. Then I reset the ipod and plugged it back in, still no good?!?!?!?
Any ideas, besides something super drastic.  Thanks in advance
Forgot to mention that I have a iPod Classic.

  • Classic 160GB, Itunes and Windows Explorer all disagree on how much space is on the Ipod

    Hi,
I restored and resynced my Ipod Classic 160GB (about 2.5-3 years old) to see if it would help a problem I was having when plugging it into my stereo receiver via USB (the receiver was only recognizing it for four or five songs, then losing the connection).
It took a long time to restore the Ipod, due to the size of the collection and the number of MP3s that I had it convert to AACs.
The Ipod, which had had the exact same songs on it before with 2.7 GB left over, now claimed to have only 53 MB of empty space.  Looking at the drive in Windows Explorer, it had 2.6 GB.  In Itunes, the Ipod appeared to be 6 GB OVER its capacity.
So I took a chance and defragged and optimized the drive.  It made it better, but not fixed:
Now, the Ipod claims that it has 2.3 GB of empty space remaining; looking at it as a drive in Windows, it appears to have 2.6 GB remaining; Itunes, however, claims that the Ipod is totally full (2.5 GB OVER CAPACITY), so it won't add the final 3,000 songs or so to my Ipod.
I know that this all fit on the Ipod fine before the restore - with the same songs checked in my library, I had 2.7 GB left over.
Also, now Itunes reads the Ipod and says that it has 12.6 GB (!!!) of "Other."  I have no video, no photos, no contacts on the Ipod or in the library - nothing other than music and album cover images.  There's no way that I'd have 12 gigs that I didn't know about.
Should I assume that the drive is dying?  Is there anything that I can do to make this better?
    Thanks for your help.

Also, does an Ipod running on Windows need the "metadata_never_index" file?  I don't remember this being on the pod until recently, and from what I've read it's a file for connection to Macs.

  • Connecting iPod launches iTunes and Windows Explorer

Just curious. Is there any way to keep my iPod from launching Windows Explorer via Autoplay when connecting it to my PC via USB? Currently it opens an instance of Windows Explorer showing the contents of the iPod as a storage device and then about 30 seconds later launches iTunes as well. I'd like a succesful connection to launch only iTunes - and without the delay if possible.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Windows Vista Crashing When Ipod is Plugged In. Blue Screen of Death?

A week ago, my computer suddenly started to reboot whenever I plugged my 5th generation 80 gig Ipod in to sync. A blue screen will pop up, and automatically restart.
I do not believe this is the blue screen of death that appeared 2 months ago. I have upgraded to Itunes 8.0.1 when it was first released, and I had no problems until a week ago. I haven't heard of anyone receiving the blue screen of death since the update to Itunes 8 was released.
I have also lost all of my music from my Ipod, so I am anxious to figure this out.
Here is what the blue screen (certain passages paraphrased, the specifics were copied directly):
A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
    BADPOOLHEADER
If this is the firs time you've seen this stop error screen, restart yoru computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Make sure all hardware and software is properly installed
If it continues, disable/remove any newly installed hardware and software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shawoding. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 for Advanced Sartup options, then select safe mode.

Any help you have would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried the troubleshooting advice in this article?

Was a file name mentioned in the stop message? usually something.sys That can be a clue to the problem is the Apple advice doesn't help.

  • ITunes and Windows will not recognize iPod Nano 3rd Generation

I've been on this ALL day. Neither Windows or iTunes will recognize iPod. I have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes.... I don't know how many times.
iPod is new. Was ok to sync music and photos last week.. but now nothing. Any ideas anybody... this is driving me nuts.
When plugging in iPod - it beeps and then right away says it is ok to disconnect and beeps again... and iPod goes on... and then charges up.
I was skeptical in buying an iPod for the kids... and now am disappointed. Please somebody... change my mind!!!!

I've been having a similar issue with my iPod. My iPod will not play songs. Basically, the song or podcast will appear on screen, but is stuck at 0:00 and will not play.
When I connected my iPod to my computer, it was not recognized by iTunes and it did not appear in My Computer. I checked the Windows Device Manager, and the device did appear there. Strangely enough, the device did appear in My Computer as a removable disk only after I closed out Device Manager. I'm wondering if I need to restore my iPod. How do I do so without iTunes?

  • ITune won't launch automatically when iPod attached

I'm giving my brother my old Mac iPod and just reformatted it so he can start using it on his PC. Everything is working fine except that iTunes will not automatically launch when the iPod is attached. All the settings are correct and all software is installed properly. I have enabled disk use and can see that the iPod is recognized immediately because it mounts as an external drive but I wait and wait and wait and iTunes does not launch. When I launch iTunes manually, the iPod shows up in the source column within seconds. I only have Macs at home and a Sony Vaio laptop PC that I use for AutoCAD so I can only confirm this as a problem on my PC. I have MediaFour's MacDrive 6 installed and wondering if that is somehow conflicting. Any ideas on a fix for this?

My HP media center pc at home is doing exactly the same thing. My Dell at work will launch itunes automatically. My HP at home launched itunes the very first time I connected my ipod, but not since. I reloaded the software and again, itunes launched the first time, but not since. I wonder if this is a HP issue, or maybe a firewall issue (I use Zone Alarm)?

  • Windows XP crashes when iPod Nano or iPhone 3G syncs

My computer has been crashing when i attempt to sync my iPod/iPhone
I had an iPod nano for about a year with no problems, I upgraded to Service Pack 2 and afterwards Service Pack 3 to get my iPhone 3G to work. It sync'ed well the first couple of times but now I cannot even get my old iPod to sync without my computer shutting down, I have the option on to not automatically restart on failure or something like that. No blue screen of death or anything
What should I do because I'm really honestly quite frustrated at this point. Any help is greatly appreaciated.

I've been getting the same problem since upgrading to 7.1. Upgraded to 7.7.1 problem still happens. I have searched everywhere for a fix and a thread where some diagnosis seemed to be taking place but this has been extremely slow.
As a workaround, I found that using an older USB port works. USB 2.0 seems to always crash my iPod Nano 3rd Generation. My 1st Generation works fine with USB 2.0
    I hope this helps.

  • Windows Explorer Crashes when Combining PDFs

When I select multiple PDFs to combine into one, on a somewhat frequent basis, this is causing Windows Explorer to stop working.  The single PDF that I am trying to assemble can be anywhere from 200 to 3000 pages.  It is very inconsistent when this problem occurs.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, but the problem persists.  I am using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro and my laptop is running Windows XP.  I have a co-worker who is running Windows 7 and has also experienced this problem, so I do not believe it is related to the version of Windows that I am using.

AA9 what? Currently it is at 9.5.4 and you may have an update issue that needs to be taken care of, particularly if you are running a 64-bit version of Win 7.

  • Windows Explorer crashes when clicking on folder

Windows 7 Professional running on HP Pavilion p6616f-b.  Computer is just 1 year old.  No other issues.  Has Norton Internet Security running.  When clicking folder, Windows Explorer stops working and restarts.  Happens every time I go to Windows Explorer.

ewall777 wrote: Unfortunately this has been happening for a month or more and the oldest System Restore point listed is only about 2 weeks old.
Hello ewall777, This does appear to be some type of operating system corruption. You might try going to the Start Orb, and in the run box, type cmd and press the enter key. You should get a black screen with a white blinking cursor.
At the blinking cursor type sfc /scannow      (notice the space between the sfc and the / )
This will start the system file check utility that checks all the operating system files for errors or missing files, and replace any that are not valid or missing.
When this completes, just type exit at the blinking cursor and you will return to the desktop.
You may want to reboot the system, and then check if your issues has been resolved.
Please click the White Kudos star on the left, to say thanks.
Please mark Accept As Solution if it solves your problem.

  • Windows Explorer crash when opening a specific Adobe system folder

When I open "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat" to view the folder's contents, i get a "Windows Explorer has stopped working" error pop-up. It ONLY happens when trying to view that specific folder. It has no effect on the actual operation of the Adobe program. I am running it on a Dell XPS 420 with Vista Home Premium 32bit.
Here's a screenshot of the problem:

  • ITunes 7.7.1 crashes when iPod 80gb Classic is plugged in to sync

Hi all - problem has been occurring ever since upgrade to 7.7.1, iTunes works perfectly and I can access all features until the iPod is plugged in and syncing begins. At this point there is a flurry of disk activity and the windows error message informing me of a crash and asking to send an error report is displayed and iTunes is exited.
iTunes will continue to function correctly if the iPod is plugged in but not syncing.
I've tried other USB ports and I've tried without ituneshelper.exe running.
