ITunes artist's listings in iTunes 11

This concerns listing in the latest version of iTunes. Becausee iTunes defults to artists (people) by their first names (the illiterate not too bright method in my opionon) when I started using iTunes I carefully listed the "Artist" using last name, first name method, and things worked just fine. Later I found that if list the names in Album Artist as first name last name, the system kept things in proper alphabetical order but displayed the names in the box that shows what's playing as First Last. Even better. Then came 11.
The listings in "songs" are still correct as are the listings in "Albums," properly ignoring articles and keeping thing alphabetized. But (there's alway a but, isn't there), in the "Artists" view, things go haywire. Some Louis Armstrong is shown as Armstong, Louis, but Alison Krauss is Alison Krauss. Some albums by the same artists are grouped by first name, and some others by last name. This makes this view pretty worthless. Why Apple can't provide a simple choice as they do in Contacts is a question for the ages.
Any suggestions as to how to resolve this. I've read alot of, but not all, the posts on alphabetization in iTunes but find no solution. The first brain to figure this out wins a 5 pound wheel of Mother Fletcher's Mootzrella Cheese availble for pick up at the gas station in East Cupcake, New Mexico.

If you are imagining that iTunes should know that "Doris Day" is really "Day, Doris" but that "Green Day" is not really "Day, Green," it does not.  It does a simple lexical sort on the text strings.
The Artists view is only for eye candy.  People who care about the data that goes with the songs (of which I am one) should stay in Songs view.

  • ITunes / iPod 80G Conflict

Probably a "no brainer" but I'm a newbie. I uploaded a bunch of music and most transfered with no problem. On occasion(like this one) my iTunes shows all the songs I uploaded by a particular artist, but in my iPod I've got 5 different listing for the same artist; all with the same songs under each different listing.Under the artist category there all spelled alike, etc. How do I get rid of the multiple "same artist/songs" listings on my iPod. Thanks!

OK, i'll answer my own question. It seems particular to Bob Dylan that I needed to go back into the source files and describe all the songs with the same genre and album (Both categories) or it wouldn't see the artist as a single listing. Odd, his was the only one that gets treated this way, all the other artists have various genre and album listings and are not affected......go figure.

  • Artists names duplicated in iTunes Library

I'm still using iTunes 6.5 on my system. I haven't upgraded yet and I don't know if I'll do. However, I have a question. Why do I have multiple listings for the same artist if only the album (CD) or source changes. For example, I may have three (3) listing for The Eagles for each album (CD). Shouldn't I have only one (1) listing for the Eagles, with all of the albums (CD) listed. IT's crazy, because when I want to select an artist, I have multiple listings instead of one.

You may have the artist name typed in multiple ways. For example, extra spaces may not show up or not be noticed, but iTunes will take each different name literally as a different artist. The solution, usually, is to select ALL the songs by the same artist at the same time. Now do a Get Info which you will be a get info for all of them at once. If the artist field is blank, then that confirms that you have alternate spellings (only fields that are the same for ALL the selected files will be shown with their filled in values). At this point, simply type in the artist name once in that field and hitting OK will apply that single spelling to ALL the selected files. You should now have everything under a single artist.

  • How do I get Itunes to list an album in track order including ignoring featured artists

I recently downloaded Daft Punk's new album after buying it on vinyl. after importing it to itunes, itunes wont list the album in track order. instead it lists the tracks in order per artists. example Daft punk, then Daft punk featuring Pharrel Williams ect...how do i get itunes to understand that they're all the same album and to list them in track order??
    thanks

    Hi bdm105!
Most likely, this is happening because the Album Artist field is different for each song from Random Access Memories. We have an article about song grouping in iTunes, and it can be found here:
Why aren't songs with the same album art grouped together?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1468
There are a couple ways to fix the information listed for Random Access Memories outlined in that article, but I want to point out one here:
Albums in which all songs don't have the same Album Artist information
iTunes 7 and later includes a new attribute for song files called Album Artist This allows you to assign a primary artist name for an album that many includes songs by several artists. It is important that all songs in the album have the same Album Artist name. To assign an Album Artist, select all the songs in the album and choose Get Infofrom the File menu. Next, type a name in the Album Artist field name such that it will apply to all the selected songs. This field can optionally be left blank if all the songs have the same album name.
The Album Artist field is shown in the above picture, but it is not highlighted. You will also want to make sure the Track Number field contains the correct information for the album, and information on that field can be found here:

  • How do I get rid of the new "Album by Artist" column in iTunes 10?

Just installed iTunes 10. It has added an obnoxious column, "album by artist" in my music listings that I want to delete. I went view>view options. The album artist box is not checked, so how do I get rid of this column?

Try clicking on the tab itself. Unless it's changed in version 10, that tab toggles from Album to Album by Artist to Album by Year. If you don't want the album column, go to view and turn it off.

  • ITunes 7 "Album by Artist"

iTunes 7 replace "album" with "album by artist", which totally screws up listings in all views (list, album, flow). This is totally different from the sense of flipping thru CDs album-by-album, NOT album/artist-by-album/artist.
Is there a way to get a standard album option anymore?
This needs to be FIXED. Apple needs to have some way to use this in the expected way.
    Tecsi
      Windows XP Pro

Place your pointer over the column album by artist and click it....whaola,,,,choices are album - album by artist - album by year - - with an arrow at the side you can choose acending or decending
This can be done on all columns
I for one like the newer options including this feature as now you can place the song order anyway that suits you

  • Why are my iTunes file listings inconsistent?

As a new Apple user I have been ripping my CDs to my Macbook's hard drive, in order to transfer to my music player and create my own compilation CDs etc, but am finding the album and track listing inconsistent. When bluetoothing files to my mobile phone I found the file listings all over the place. For example I ripped the 4 disc anniversary set of John Barry's film music and when looking for the files found discs 2 and 3 listed under John Barry and, after a long hunt, discs 1 and 4 under the 'Compilations' sub heading. All the title information is the same and in the same order and I can find no reason for the discrepancy. The listings in iTunes are fine it's just the file transfer boxes. I have also experienced the same problem with other artists where their greatest hits albums have, for inexplicable reasons, also been arbitrarily placed in the 'Compilatons' file despite clear titling e.g. Janis Ian's- Souvenirs placed under 'Compilations' NOT Janis Ian. Any ideas out there in etherland?

    Dear Chris CA,
Many thanks for the swift reply and a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours. The 'File transfer boxes', apologies for that, I let my computer illiteracy run away with me. I suppose they are the windows found when you click on 'bluetooth' at the top of your screen then 'Send File-Music-iTunes-iTunes Music-Artist-Album-Track' to make a selection for a music file to be bluetoothed to a mobile device.
I take on board your point about compilations, but it still does not explain why a four disc set from a single album by the same artist would find discs 1 and 4 under the artist's name (John Barry) and discs 2 and 3 under Compilations. I will, however, try to follow your advice when the Christmas rush is over.
I must take issue on the 'Compilations' comment though. I know there are those amongst us, I can be one myself, who are a tad anal-retentive, over protective or plain nuts when it comes to their music collection and filing systems (people have been known to file by date, artist and even, believe it or not, autobiographically), but I've found nobody who places single artist Definitive, Greatest Hits or 'B' Sides collections under compilations. They're always listed by artist because using any other system leads us to chaos and the collapse of the world as we know it. Imagine hunting through racks of albums of N.O.W. CDs (1 to infinity) to try and find that Olivia Newton-John Greatest Hits!!! Having to scroll through several thousand Amazon compilation pages to get to 'The Best Of Captain Beefheart'. My friend the system is flawed and I am saddened that Apple have let me down in this way when Windows, of which I am now no friend (that's a different story), have this problem licked!!!
    Kind regards,
    Barksandbytes.

Generally setting a common Album Artist will fix things. For deeper problems see Grouping tracks into albums.

  • How do I search for a specific artist in the itunes store? I can't find a search bar.

I am trying to find a specific artist who's music I want to purchase but I can not locate a manual search bar to input the artist name. I do not want to nor do I have the time to look through all featured artists to locate the specific artist to purchase. At this point I'm about to go to a brick and mortar store and just buy the CD.
    This is very irritating.
    Chuck D.

If you are missing the Search field you may be missing the entire top section, together with the progress bar when playing and the red, yellow and green buttons. This can happen if iTunes overlaps the top of the screen (which of course it shouldn't do).
If this is the case, click and drag on the very bottom right-hand corner of the window (when in Library/Music or the iTunes Store) and drag upwards to reduce the height of the window. Then click on the bottom bar and drag downwards.

  • ITunes 11: In the store, I can no longer sort by name/artist/album

I can no longer sort by name or artist or album when I'm in the store with iTunes 11.  Yes, I discovered the View Options in the Menu Bar. By when I select it nothing opens. Same for Command-J. It doesn't do anything either. I've tried hitting Command-J repeatedly, but nothing.
The fact is, it seems utterly stupid to have this work differently than when you're in your library---by simply hitting name/artist or album in the bar at the top of the list. Having to sort lists in the Store via a completely different method than the lists in one's library is totally counter-intuitive.
But back to my problem:  The View Options won't open for me. Anybody know how to fix this?
I've got a lot of music I wish to buy, but I need different methods of sorting, otherwise it'll be a nightmare trying to keep track of things.
    Thanks,
    Doug

I have the same exact problem.  I am using a Windows computer running Windows 7.  I was able to see them prior to the installation of 10.4.  I have this problem on 2 computers and have a hard time believing that no one else is having this problem

  • Song and Artist Info missing under itunes but not in the original file, and putting track number next to certian songs. Help

A response on this subject from another post:
It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.

I had an earlier post on this subject with a similar problem. I tried what you suggested and it worked indeed. You can select the artists from your Ipod on Itunes and after highlighting the artists/albums affected, click NO on the compilation box and the issue is resolved: the artists appear on the list.
    Thank you so much!!!!.

  • I have synced music on to my iPhone 4S. The issue is that the order of the songs are in alphabetical and I want it in order of Artist (Adele, Akon, David Guetta etc). It's like that on iTunes, how do I get it like that on my iPhone?

Please let me know asap. I need to know how to re arrange the order on my iPhone so it's in the order of Artist. Thanks.

On the iPhone, go into Settings -> Store and turn off "Automatic Downloads" for Apps (and Music and Books, if you wish). You can also do that on the iPad to prevent it from going in the opposite direction.
That will stop any automatic downloading... to prevent them from coming over when using iTunes, select the phone (under Devices), Apps, and then uncheck "Automatically sync new apps." Again, do the same for the iPad if you wish.

  • When Ripping CD, iTunes Displays Wrong Artist & Wrong Album

Thanks for looking at my post! When I try to rip a CD, iTunes thinks it's a different CD. Even when I change all of the song tracks, artist, and album name . . . I can't change the time. Of course the two CD's have different song lenths, so the songs are split across the wrong CD.
Is there any way to fix this?

Is it a 2 disc album?
