ITunes as a movie center for Apple TV

I got my 2nd Gen Apple TV last Friday. The plan was to use it to stream my movies (ripped from my DVDs using Handbrake) to my TV. This was pretty easy to set up.
My iTunes is running on a Mac mini Server (10.6.5), the only machine that is guaranteed to be permanently on anyway in our household, under a dedicated account. The movies are on a separate disk and I alt-drag them into iTunes (so iTunes does not create its own copy). But for such 'linked' movies, I cannot set genre in iTunes and everything ends up in one big list in AppleTV. Is there a way I can get genre in such 'linked' movies?
Secondly, I would like to edit my m4v files just to turn the movie into several chapters. So, trim/cut/copy, but without encoding/re-encoding which harms the quality. A few years back, I would probably have used QuickTime Pro, but it seems that does not exist anymore. What do people use?

Option-dragging into iTunes makes the entries second class citizens, but relocating them from within iTunes makes the first class citizens and I can edit all the info. I can then have all my movies in a different physical location.
Cropping movies can be done with QT 10. Chapters in ATV2-playable movies I have not solved yet.

Apple TV sees my iTunes Library but movie purchased via Apple TV will not synch to computer. Anybody know how to help me with this?

I recently purchased a movie via my Apple TV (in Canada) however I can't seem to get it shared/uploaded to my Apple Computer (itunes/movies/library). I can see the movies from my computer on Apple TV but I can not seem to get the movies from Apple TV shared/uploaded to my computer. Can someone please help me out on this? Thank you

Itunes update causing weird problem for apple tv streaming songs

In itunes 10.5 when I choose apple tv as the external speaker and send songs through it plays the song and displays the cover of the album, title, song, name, and artist on the tv screen. When I updated to 10.5.1 it does the same except that after the first song the cd cover is one behind what is playing. For the sake of clarity, say I start the streaming songs on random play. The first three songs might be "Misty" by Kate Bush, "Rolling Along" by Lucinda Williams, and then "The Foggy Foggy Dew" by Greg Brown. When the first song plays it will be correct. "Misty" will be playing, Kate Bush will be displayed as the artist and the cover of the Kate Bush album will be showing. But when the next song comes on it will be playing "Rolling Along", Lucinda Williams will be displayed as the artist but the Kate Bush album cover will be displayed. Then the next song comes on "The Foggy Foggy Dew" will be playing, Greg Brown will be displayed as the artist but the Lucinda Wililams cover will be displayed. And so on.
I've experimented with it and feel certain it is the itunes update. I still have version 10.5 on my laptop and that is working normally. It is only the computer that I updated to 10.5.1 on that his having this weird thing occur.
Any ideas?

I have the exact same problem. Thanks for describing it so accurately. My Apple TV underwent a software update last evening, but the problem remains. Will be anxious to know when a fix has been applied.

Itunes wont update--run prescript for apple mobile device

My itunes update is hanging and I get the error "run prescript for apple mobile device..." I cannot sync my ipad 3 w/o the update, so I am stuck. Can someone help?

Sidenote--Itunes compatibility is my curent version of OS. I have an IPAD 3 that wont sync because of old verison of itunes

When will iTunes UK enable movie purchases on Apple TV?

As title states, I'm frustrated that he UK always lags behind. The key ability of not being able to either directly purchase movies off the apple tv or view existing purchases is a required feature. Why should it make a difference which device I purchase it from if I am doing the buying.

It's not just the UK, but with AppleTV the US has always got the goodies firts let's just hope we get them too at some point. Maybe at present this is to ensure that if you buy something you have a copy in iTunes/iOS device as you cannot redownload, and AppleTV does not have permanent memory - no reason a puchase there couldn't kickstart an automatic download to itunes next time you ran it though.
Personally I think the studios are quite stupid here, as there are things I would buy in HD if available instead of my older DVD copy, but I won't be buying the BluRays of those titles.
Another thing that puts me off buying at the moment is that even when there are a few titles in HD, they are mostly 720p - in the US I guess you would get the option of redownloading either 720p or 1080p, but without a rdownload option in UK you'd worry that as soon as you bought a load in 720p, they'd up the feature to 1080p availability and expect you to pay again.

Will movies optimized for Apple TV in Handbrake also play on iPhone?

f I convert a DVD that I own using Handbrake, and pick the Apple TV setting will it also then play okay on my iPhone or do I have to convert it again using optimized for iPhone?

It will play just fine, but when you convert it for Apple TV you get a resolution fit for a large TV and an equally large file size. The iPhone will fit it to the screen if you play it. If you convert the video for iPhone, it will give you a 480 x 320 video size (which is ideal for iPhone). So, you can get a smaller file size by converting for iPhone.
Now, converting for iPhone and then playing on Apple TV will work, but it will look worse compared to Apple TV optimized video.

Does itunes movies only for apple devices

my daughter purchased a movie on itunes though she does not have an ipad or ipod she has a tablet, my question is can i download the movie she bought to her tablet?

Note that iTunes can only be installed on Mac OS X or Windows. So if the tablet is running Android or some other operating system (WebOS, etc.), she will not be able to watch movies from the iTunes Store on that tablet.

Creating a Different Movie Folder for Apple TV

I have a lot of family movies that I've shot, edited and sent to my itunes library. All of these are in the Movies folder in itunes.
I would like to be able to segragate my family movies in itunes from my other movies.
When I Cntr click/get info/options/media kind it doesn't give me an option to create a new folder, so I'm stuck with either Movie or TV show.
Can anyone tell me if their is a way of creating a new folder eg 'Family Movies'

It sounds like I'm stuick with using Genres as my best option..
It would be a nice and easy feature to implement if Apple gave you a free form option of creating a few new movie folders similar to creating a folder in iphoto.
Creating a playlist is probably a good option for me as well.

ITunes looses photo sync settings for Apple TV (1st gen.)

Since the update to the new Photo app on my Mac, iTunes forgets the photo sync settings for my Apple TV (1st. generation, 160 GB HDD).
Every time I open the photo section of the Apple TV sync settings, all the options are turned off. Then I mark a couple of albums and sync the Apple TV >> all album appear on the Apple TV.
But after closing and re-opening iTunes in the photo settings everything is unmarked again. So on every following sync the photos on the Apple TV are easily erased :-( Resync them to the Apple TV takes hours (>30'000 photos!).
All the other sync settings in iTunes remain intact.
Environment:
- MacBook Pro Retina 15" with the latest SW (Mac OS, iTunes, Photo App, etc.)
- Apple TV 1st gen 160 GB HDD

Restarting iTunes resolves the issue in the majority of cases, if it doesn't my second guess would be your security software.
What really seems strange here is that there have been no updates since well before Xmas, so after initially setting it up, the first update would have brought you right up to the most recent (and indeed the very last) .
Agh, how silly of me, I see it's iTunes you have updated.
If that's about all you've changed, you might want to try reinstalling iTunes and bonjour.

How do I access genius results in iTunes store? move it again apple?

i can't find genius reccommended purchases on the iTunes store after upgrading to iTunes 9 where did apple move this feature to?

If at the store home, it's right about halfway down the length of the scroll bar, or there abouts. It will say Genius Recommendations and "see all >>" right beside is.. Generally, it's about the 3rd or 4th row down of the listed items, not counting the large header image..

ITunes Store says all content for Apple ID has been downloaded when it hasn't.

I have multiple Season Passes for TV shows. When I got to Store: Check for available content after receiving the e-mail that the episode[s] are available, I get a message saying that there are no purchases to download for this Apple ID.
When I go to the store, I can find my pre-paid purchases and download them from there. It's quite annoying to have to manually download all my Season Passes.
Why would my purchases not be available for download using the Check for content menu option but available in the store proper?

I wanted to follow up here because the problem turned out to be a problem with iTunes billing, something that other people may experience. Specifically, turns out the account was blocked because of a billing dispute, and that dispute was caused by the iTunes store's practice of not billing some sales at the time they take place (in this case, days or weeks afterwards). This led me to believe a charge was incorrect and having the credit card company block it, which in turn led to the account being disabled (without explanation).
The iTunes store needs to improve their billing practices so that charges are reflected promptly in customers' accounts. Otherwise problems like this will occur.

I-tunes doesn't have movie tab for Apple TV

I have a Mac Book which is paired with my ATV and I share a Mini with ATV. My MacBook has a summary, movies, and photos tab, but my Mini only has a summary and photos tab. This obviously does not allow me to transfer a movie that has been rented on my Mini to ATV. Why is this and how do I fix it?

You can only have one 'synced' computer which can transfer video to AppleTv

You'd think there might be more flexibility for rentals, but really it's best for you to rent or the AppleTV direct or on the synced computer. Also I think 'moving' rentals from one device to another is not handled by the usual AppleTV tabs.
From memory there's options under your rentals (maybe right click on the rental) to allow transfer to iPod etc - your AppleTV might be listed therer too.
If not - Can you manually copy the movie from the current library to the synced one?
You'll only be able to use it on one device at a time.

Problem solved – While looking elsewhere on the Internet, I ran across an article where a guy in Russia found that his security code for the credit card entered on his iTunes account was missing.
After checking, I found my security code was missing as well. After I reentered my credit card security code, I was able to log on to the iTunes Store and also able to turn on Home Sharing.
I HOPE The Apple iTunes accounts were not hacked into. That could be a reason for the security codes beinging erased by Apple.

"Convert Selection for Apple TV" in iTunes

When I control-click on a movie in iTunes and select "Convert Selection for Apple TV" - the movie converts but when I sync it to the Apple TV there is no audio. It plays the other files fine.
Is this a setting in iTunes or quicktime or is it just faulty computer hardware?

Your source file is likely a muxed file, you will need to convert these files in another application. Mpeg streamclip is free and does the job.
