ITunes as Household's only music source

Me and my family recently decided to take all our CD's and import them into a newly bought MacMini. On this MacMini we have 6 user accounts. One of these account we call MusicMaster. We import all CD's into this account's iTunes Library. We arranged it so that the tracks are all stored in a shared folder.
We want it to be possible to access all the music from all user accounts. And also from my wife's and my iBook's. Basically that's all we need in terms of music playing.
So, we went into each account on th MacMini and changed the iTunes Music Folder Location to where the MusicMaster account is located. We unticked the "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" because we only want one copy of the music library. Then we clicked the "Add to library from the file menu and selected the shared folder where the music is located.
Everything works great so far. We can even play the music from out iBooks. This means that at the same time someone in the family is playing rock over Airportexpress-1, I play jazz on Airportexpress-1 and my wife is playing blues on Airportexpress-2.
Now to the question:
When we import a new CD into Musicmasters iTunes Library, it's not appearing int the other user accounts iTunes programs. Suddenly everything seems kind of unpleasant. How do we achieve this. Could someone please help me?

Welcome to the discussions!
In the way you currently have it set up, each user would need to "add to library" for the new songs added to the Musicmasters account. Each account has their own library.
I suggest two changes to the setup:
1. In each user's "Music" folder, place an alias of the Musicmasters iTunes folder and delete the current iTunes folder. This will cause iTunes to recognize the shared folder as the user's master library instead of having their own.
2. Tick the "copy files to iTunes..." selection. This will allow any account to add songs to the library (if you want to give everyone this capability).
The only potential downside to this is that the playcount, ratings, etc. will be the same for all accounts. If this is an issue, then the way you have it set up is fine - but each user will need to manually add any music in the master library.
Hope this helps.

• I have been a customer of ITunes and Apple since 2007. Movies, Apps, Music and books Itunes has been my only source for my media needs.

I have been a customer of ITunes and Apple since 2007. Movies, Apps, Music and books Itunes has been my only source for my media needs. 397 Apps 759 Songs over 100 Videos 13 books 3 IPhones 2 IPods So here is my problem with ITunes I purchased an App and it is identical to one I have already brought. The App description did not say anything that it would not do what I was trying to do. I wrote sup[port and asked if they could issue a credit. Mari at support wrote back and said he checked with his supervisor and they could not issue a credit. I told them what a good loyal customer I have been to Itunes and Apple and they still refused. Granted the App did not cost a lot of money (3.99) but it’s the principle. With customers having options to shop anywhere I would think a business would do whatever it takes to retain the loyal customers they do have Occasionally I rush to buy an App without fully understanding if it meets my needs. According to ITunes support that has occurred nine times. Here is the last reply that I received Roger, I know how frustrating it can be when things don't work the way they should be and I do apologize for the inconvenience that this may have caused you. I am sorry but we could not be able to grant your request as we have made 9 exceptions on you. For more information on Apple's requirements for using the iTunes Store, please refer to the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions:http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/us/terms.html Again, I am hoping for your kind understanding regarding this matter. Sincerely Mari iTunes Store/Mac App Store Advisor

"The App description did not say anything that it would not do what I was trying to do."
You've already had 9 refunds? You understand that apps are sold on a non-return policy, presumably. You bought an app that didn't claim to do something that you wanted from it, and now that you've found that it doesn't, you want your money back.
Perhaps you've failed to explain your point properly but I can't see why you expect any sympathy from users here, not that it would make any difference. Only the store staff can issue refunds if they think appropriate. Chalk it up to experience. You could even contact the developer in advance of a purchase if you want to be certain an app does what you want. Then if it really fails to live up to the promise you would at least have a better argument for a refund.

• 7.2 upgrade breaks iTunes link to music source files

after upgrading to 7.2, itunes lost connection with all my music source files.
ya know, i got exlamation marks on ALL my tracks....
tried "keeping it organized" on and off, tried changing "music folder location", new prefs, choosing a new library on startup [option] but nothing worked.
i cannot play any of my songs [external drive].
weirdly enough, just a few songs can play, out of thousands....
so basically, i got all my music files, but itunes cannot play them.
great.
what other ways can i "link" the source files back to my iTunes library?

had all iTunes folder copied to another drive (internal-not operating sys drv) to alleviate a space problem on my main drive. (operating sys drive)
updated to 7.2.
panicked at not being able to get iTunes to "see" new location of all stuff.
read all horror stories of how apple dose not seem to give a tish any more about how bad its software works.
realized that iTunes created an empty "replacement" folder on the one that I had just moved from.(operating sys drive)
tried to import files to the "new" empty iTunes folder.
iTunes only lets you "import" one song at a time. (really stupid move apple!)
then tried the "add to library" function.
this worked for 1 song.
then I found that I could use "add to library" for multiple selected songs.
then I tried a folder.
this worked also.
then I tried it with the entire iTunes Music folder. this brought everything in just fine.
now I had to get back my playlists.
I tried "import..." and selected the iTunes library document. it told me that it wasn't a validly exported document and would not work.
then I tried "import..." for the iTunes Library.xml document.
this succeeded in brining in all song folders as playlists and also contained all my previously created playlists and smart playlists.
In an effort to solve my original problem (overcrowding my operating sys drive) I ran this procedure on the copy of the iTunes folder that I had made on the other drive (internal-not operating sys drv).
it worked.
I now had two identical iTunes collections on two different drives.
BUT...
on further inspection I found that the files I had originally moved to the other drive (internal-not operating sys drv) were the only ones that exist and the ones that show up in the "recreated" itunes folder (operating sys drive) were just referencing the "real" files.
also I hooked up my "vid pod" and everything is working just fine with everything.
recap.
dont panic.
find the folder with all your stuff.
use "add to library" to make iTunes "see" all your stuff.
check the iTunes Library.xml document and look for any evidence of your lists.
use "import..." for the iTunes Library.xml document.
cheers&aloha

• I have purchased itunes match but the cloud will not load on my ipad 4.the only music that will show up is stuff that i bought from the itunes store.any ideas on how to get this to work?

i have purchased itunes match but the cloud will not load on my ipad 4.it works on my iphone 5 & it originally worked on my ipad.the only music that will show up is stuff that i bought from the itunes store.any ideas on how to get this to work?

On the MBP, in iTunes, switch to Song view and enable the iCloud Status column by pulling down View > View options and selecting the option for "iCloud Status." Close the small window. Look for any tracks that have a status of "waiting." If you see several of them disable iTunes Match while holding down the Option key. Quit iTunes, wait a few seconds, then open it again and turn iTM back on. Let it compelete the scan. Wait until all tracks that are "waiting" have a status of either "matched" or "uploaded."
On the iPad, turn off iTunes Match then launch the Music app and let the contents clear out. Power cycle the iPad for good measure, then re-enable the service once all the tracks in iTunes have been processed.

• Can I share ONLY music between users on iTunes

Hi, i'm creating an account on my Mac for my niece who has just got her own iPhone.
It will be registered to her iCloud account with her own photos, Mail, Mac & iOS apps, files, etc. But I have a large music library that I want to share with her.
Now I want to keep everything else separate e.g. Books, apps, Audiobooks, etc. Is this possible? And if so, how??
Thanks!
P.S. I'm running OSX Mavericks but will soon be updating to Yosemite once available.

Yosemite may have new sharing features about which I do not know. iOS8 preview has a lot of new sharing things.
Not sure what exactly is possible with Home Sharing.

iTunes Home Sharing now works between users on same computer - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3865597
If none of the above work you can set it up so only music is in a shared folder and the rest is in your specific user account. That will be somewhat involved so it is better if one of the above methods works.

I have years worth of music on my PC that is about to die. If I get an iPad is there anyway to get the music from my PC onto the iPad? I have the iCloud but my understanding is only music actually purchased from iTunes lives int he cloud. I have music that was legally purchased and loaded to my iTunes account from cd's that I no longer own. I need a new laptop and am deciding between the iPad and the Mac book. I use the computer for music, photos, and web - nothing else and nothing fancy. I don't know that there is a way to save my huge music library without saving it to an external hard drive and then loading it to a new one (does the iPad have a port to plug an external hard drive into?)

First, you would need to make a backup of the entire iTunes folder on the PC. You could get music to the iPad if the PC was still functioning, or you would have to move the music to another computer. An iPad is not a laptop, and does not have a port to plug an external drive into. You can sync music to the iPad from the computer, but you are correct, unless you get iTunes Match, you would need a computer to copy the music to and then sync to an iPad.

You'll need to switch off iTunes Match on the device & sync the iPod with iTunes as hopefully you've kept all your music on your PC.

my problem is that since I update my iphone 4s ios 8 and then restore it and when I connect to itunes does not sync my music only applications

I had a similar issue and I was told that my iTunes match was on.
I had to disable iTunes match on my iPhone.
Following which - after you plugged in your iPhone to iTunes, select your iPhone on iTunes menu. You should see a summary page of your iPhone where it provides options to update or restore. On the bottom there should be an option to select "sync only selected music/playlists". I can't remember the exact wording. Once that's been checked, select your iPhone's music tab and it should allow you to select the music playlists you want to sync.

Just copy the music from one computer to another over your network or via a USB flash drive.
If you are in the US, have the latest version of iTunes (10.3) and the media was purchased via the iTunes store, you can redownload all the content via iTunes.

Easiest way is to use Migration Assistant application in /Applications/Utilities/ on your computer.
This will migrate all yoru user data from old computer.

• Is iTunes the only music software for the Mac?

I like iTunes but I ask this because from my understanding of things, If you have a Mac, you must use iTunes, and if you purchase music through iTunes, it will only allow you to play it on your computer or an iPod (which i don't have).
I have a portable MP3 player for the gym and it's not an iPod but it works with iTunes. I'm stuck! The only way I can put music on my MP3 player is from CDs i already have. I can't buy music through iTunes because I understand I wont be able to play it anyway. And I cant buy music through anyother online means because nothing else seems to work with iTunes.

You can buy your music throug iTMS, burn it to CD as a normal audio CD, then import it as an MP3 file. You should then be able to transfer the MP3 music to your MP3 player. OK so you get 2 copies of your music, but it does achieve what you're after
