ITunes at 90% CPU

Just scorched my lap as my MBP hung at 90% CPU usage and discovered it was all iTunes.  Here is the situation:
iTunes on MBP in miniplayer mode and streaming to airport express.  Wife changes songs through iPad remote and the CPU spikes to 90% and stays there.  If I then select regular window mode, the CPU drops back to 7-8% (where it was before song change).  It doesn't happen if I change songs through the MBP iTunes, only through the iPad remote.  It's like it starts a process and doesn't close it out.
Has anyone had a similar experience or know anything about this issue?

There's a couple of different things that can be going on here. Let's check on the one that involves the Mini Player first.
It seems to happen when the main iTunes player is set to Cover Flow rather than List view.
If you set iTunes to List view prior to switching to the Mini Player, does that stop the excessive CPU use while in Mini Player?

  • Itunes 100 percent CPU

I am running Itunes and my CPU is running at 100% also when trying to go onto the iTunes Store it just says "accessing iTunes Store" and hangs there. There was an update available so I tried to update which resulted in getting an error when installing saying that MSVCR80.dll was missing. I then uninstalled itunes following all the steps removing :
    Itunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall press on)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
I downloaded the latest version of Itunes and installed it. I still have the same problem. I then tried using command prompt and  netsh winsock reset. Restarting the computer but this hasn't helped either. I then tried Autoruns from Microsoft Website to see if there was any other programs using Winsock, but the only one that is showing is Bonjour.
Please can anyone help? I'm running out of ideas
I am running itunes on Windows XP SP3. I've only just started to get this problem and I haven't installed anything new for a while (not counting itunes-which I only updated to try and fix the problem)

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if CPU problem is fixed now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • I downloaded iTunes onto my CPU and deleted it. Now I can't install it again.

I downloaded iTunes onto my CPU and deleted it soon after. Now I am trying to re-install it, but it says I still have it on my CPU. So I went to the control panel, and there is only one program that was named iTunes, but I could not delete it. How can I delete it, or how can I install iTunes again?

    I'd try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

  • ITunes eats up CPU

My iTunes eats up CPU (95%-142%) while converting from MP3 to AAC!?
18 tracks (134 MB) is not to much I assume!
Fans on my MacBook Pro 17" are working non-stop (at 5800-6000 min.Speed) during this "operation"!
Is there a particular reason or there is something wrong with my laptop?

Yeah same problem here. The only thing I've been able to do to deal with the problem is to close out of mozilla firefox (or any other larger program), and it usually improves... kind of a pain.

  • ITunes 9.1 - CPU goes to 100% when playing prot. AAC - clicks and gaps

Since downloading 9.1, there are clicks and gaps when I play protected AAC songs on iTunes. Songs play fine with QuickTime player. When a protected song is played in 9.1, iTunes absorbs all available CPU.
I have followed all remediation steps in the apple.com support site including turning off sound enhancer, checking for driver updates, etc. I have also set buffering to maximum.
If I play an AAC protected song for more than a few seconds it becomes impossible to pause it and all other applications running freeze. This happens even when there are no other applications running . . . it is not a conflict problem with other applications. itunes absorbs whatever cpu there is left to take. Consistently using 60-90% of CPU w/ total CPU @ 100% constantly (when an AAC protected song is played).
iTunes works fine as long as the song is not protected.
I cannot find anything on the apple site to allow me to go back to 9.0. Why can't apple allow one to step back to the previour version? I am seriously looking at getting permanently off of iTunes. Each new release is harder to use and performs more poorly.

Unfortunately I have the same problem since I installed Itunes 9.1 anche this problem is shown in a lot of thread.....
I am seriously disappointed cause I BOUGTH these music and it's unbelieveble that Itunes doesn't play its music (sorry for my english...I am writing from Italy...).
I am afraid that it's an Intel Atom processor conflict.
I have already update everything was possible to update (driver, codecs, setting audio configuration, energy saving...) but I didn't find any stuff to solve this issue...

  • HT2731 i need a link to purge itunes enformation off cpu. so i can create another with clean slate

i need a link to remove existing i tunes from cpu to create new account info free of old account

What do you 'purge iTunes enformation off cpu' ?
You can log out of an account on your computer's iTunes via the Store > Sign Out menu option. If you want to remove all of its downloads from your iTunes library then select them and press the delete button on your keyboard.
If you want to use the same email address on a new account then you will need to replace it on that account first (iTunes accounts can't be deleted, you can only stop using them) e.g. via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes or via http://applied.apple.com

  • Poor audio quality - iTunes uses 100% CPU for 15-20 seconds

About 6-7 seconds into an MP3, iTunes pegs my CPU to 100%, and the audio lags or shuts off completely. Protected AAC files play without issue. Converting the MP3 to AAC does not help: the audio and CPU give the same results. Winamp, WMP, and *even QuickTime* can play the same MP3 files without issue. It is only MP3s and only iTunes. I have uninstalled my antivirus, but that did not help. I removed all start up applications and closed any program that wasn't essential to the computer's operation. I have even killed non-essential processes. These files have played in in iTunes previously, it has only been in the last few months that I have had a problem. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of iTunes just this morning. Nothing has helped, and I'm not about to reformat my PC just to see if that will help when these files play just fine in all my other media players.
    So, to recap:
    - Problem is ONLY with MP3s -> M4Ps play fine
    - Problem is ONLY iTunes -> Quicktime, Windows Media Player, and WinAmp play the MP3 just fine
    Ideas?

I have no idea what is causing this, but iTunes is rather sensitive to ID3 tag versions - the usual symptom is that it will not play the file.
As an experiment try selecting an MP3 track, then right click and select convert ID3 tags. Convert to "None".
I would do this on a copy of the file.

  • Why does iTunes use 100% CPU all the time, hogging my Macbook Air?

Decided to post this here instead of the iTunes forum, since it might be related to hardware too.
New owner of a 2011 13" Macbook Air, core i5 based.
My problem started about 1 week ago, after it had run out of power completely one day. At the first boot after that it was incredibly sluggish, totally unusable. After waiting for 5 minutes and still being unresponsive, I turned it off and then back on. Then it booted fine. HOWEVER, ever since that time I noticed the following behavior:
    - iTunes stays at 100% + CPU all the time, mostly between 100-120%. Even if it's not playing. Even when I deleted the entire library and left it empty.
    - iStats reports CPU idle between 50-65%. However, CPU temperature is still about 55 degrees C (which, I think, is far less than what it should have been with 50% idle cpu). I can confirm the low temperature by touching the chasis.
    - the cursor freezes and jumps every few seconds, making the mac kind of unusable with iTunes open.
This has been going on for 2 weeks now. The problem goes away every now and then (iTunes sometimes goes back to regular CPU usage of 3-5%), but most of the time it's there.
    Help!
    P.S.

Cee Pee You, is a OS modification. Apple recommends that you un-install these prior to a OS update because Apple makes changes to the OS all the time which breaks programs like these.

  • Itunes 11 high CPU

Since downloading iTunes 11 I've noticed a considerable drop in computer functionality and speed whenever it's running. Even if it's just playing music. It's eating more CPU and Memory than ever before. Is this a normal thing?

Yessss! i' ve finally found the issue !
The problem was with "smart play lists" i dunno how you call it in english, but i' ve created a long time ago a smart playlist named "unread" because the "all random" function is not so much random for me, as they play some tracks more often than others...
With as criteria " numbers of play = 0 " so one title is played one time!
By using my brain as good as i can, i told myself " what itunes do when a song ends and then go to the next?"
It wrote something on the smart play list or something like that
Then test from "play all random" = no more issue !
Then deleted my smart play list and recreate one identical = problem solved !
norbml : i hope this help you

  • ITunes using 95% CPU?

I'm running iTunes 10.7, Mountain Lion, on an iMac with 4gb RAM. Periodically while running iTunes my computer gets really sluggish; a look in Activity Monitor reveals iTunes using over 90% of the CPU. If I close and restart iTunes, it behaves itself for a while, but this can happen even if iTunes has not been open for long. What's going on, and is there anything I can do to fix it?

    I'm having the same trouble!
My difference is that I'm running Lion (10.7.5) on a Mac Pro with 12GB RAM.  I have oodles of space on all drives (total of about 13TB).
After iTunes is running for a  few minutes  the entire system become VERY sluggish!
The display mode does not seem to matter at all.
Screen updates for  pointer interaction, window dragging, and etc. slows to about 2 or 3 FPS (slow!)  Even typing this right now is slow slow slow!
UG!  Yet another wonderful Apple software update!

  • ITunes using 50% CPU

I need some help. It seems that iTunes is taking up over 50% of my CPU and is fragging everything ese to a massive slow down. I have tried all of the suggestions on the iTunes support page, to no avail. Has anyone been abel to resolve this? It seems related to the upgrade to 7.6.2.
As soon as I go into iTune the CPU pegs and iTunes is horribly slow.

edit: warning: for some reason iTunes 7.0.2.16 doesn't want to recognize (authorize) my purchased music. I will update this if I find out how. I tried deauthorizing my computer but it wasn't successful at deauthorizing itself.
I found out how to fix it; go back to a previous version of iTunes. I found an old version of iTunes at http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=itunes (I just downloaded iTunes 7.0.1 according to that website--which is actually 7.0.2.16).
I had to export my library before uninstalling iTunes. Then after uninstalling the new one and installing the old version I just imported my exported library file from the previous sentence. It uses considerably less CPU now. With iTunes open and visible it takes ~15-20%. If I have the option selected to minimize to the system tray and I minimize it, it uses ~5%.

  • Itunes spiking my CPU well over 100% - any genius got some time?

    Hi there,
Ongoing problem with my iTunes 7.5 hammering my CPU at well over 100%. This happens regularly every 5 - 7 minutes and is quite annoying. I used activity monitor to copy the activity as it was occurring. I hope there's a genius here who can decipher what my issue is. Please it's driving me crazy!!!
For clarity, I repair permissions regularly, I update after a safe waiting period, repair permissions again, restart computer, use Mac Janitor for day, week, month, repair permissions again, restart computer, etc...
My computer runs extremely fast when iTunes is off. Everything grinds to a halt when iTunes starts to spike.
Also I checked the discussions and followed, with no luck, all the prior recommended fixes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

  • Itunes gobbles my cpu

When I play music, my CPU light flashes like crazy and when it does, my music skips like crazy. All was fine until I changed playback features. Well, turning them all off hasn't fixed the problem. Help?!

This may sound a little odd, but as an experiment, could you try creating a test library as in the following article about something esle:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302856
You want the section headed: Check for content files with issues.
Add back files gradually and check to see if you have the problem as you go.
Make sure you have unchecked those checkboxes on the playback tab before you do it.
I am just wondering if iTunes is getting hung up on caclulating sound check on some files.
AVG isn't one of the virus checkers I associate with skipping problems in iTunes although some otheres are.
