ITunes automatically putting songs in library

Hello
I just got a new laptop and my itunes on it is automatically adding files from certain folders into itunes. I don't want it to do this. I want to manually add all the songs to my itunes library. I'm looked through all the preferences and can't find where I can change this option. I am using iTunes with windows by the way.
Also, I recall being able to delete a song from my hard drive within iTunes and it doesn't do that anymore either, can someone please also tell me where I might turn this option on? Thanks for any help.

Hi,
Well perhaps I am being a bit dense here, but using iTunes 6.1 I thought that you would do the following:
Open iPod Options, select the 'Music' tab, make sure the two top options "Automatically Update..." are left unchecked
Then select the "Manually Manage Songs and Playlists"
You can also if you wish use the option below that:
"Only Update Checked Songs".
This is how I do it with my copy of iTunes and have no problems with it.
Hope this helps, but as I say perhaps I am being a bit thick and misunderstand what you wish to do.

  • How to stop iTunes from adding songs to library automatically???

I love iTunes and almost everything about it. Pretty much the one and only complaint with it is that every time I download a music file (not to my music folder), iTunes can be completely shut down, but starts up and adds the file to my library. I download a LOT of random files that I listen to once and delete immediately, or I will download music to one folder and move it to my music folder at a later date, so having iTunes automatically adding all of these files to the library on its own free will is going to force me to uninstall it. Is there any way to stop iTunes from doing this?????? Even if it were to just add the files only if I played them in iTunes vs any file I add my my computer?

I think you aked this before and didn't get an answer. I don't really know, but here goes.
Any thing iTunes plays it adds to the library and I guess that iTunes is set as your default player for the type of file you are downloading.
You don't say exactly what you are doing but you are using another program to download music files. I am guessing that somewhere in the Options or Settings of the program you are using there is a setting to play after downloading, maybe you can turn that off?

  • ITunes Not Playing songs in library

Help!! In iTunes all the songs listed under the category of "playlists" will not play. I keep clicking on the play icon and nothing happens. BUT, if I go to the "music" category under "Library", I can click on any item and it will play just fine.
I have reinstalled iTunes and tried several other hints from the FAQ section of the support for iTunes page. Anyone have any ideas?

Have you moved your music around? Sounds like it's been moved and is not where iTunes expects to find it.

  • ITunes cannot find songs in library

For some reason, my iTunes cannot find songs in my iTunes library that are there. It says the file cannot be located, and I have to go one by one and individually find the files for iTunes. I checked in my preferences and I made sure that it is actually looking in the folder where all my songs are. Any idea why this happened? Is there any way to find all of the songs at once instead of doing them individually? (I have about 800 songs, so that could take a while).

One way you might be able to speed things up ( re-add to itunes) is to find songs where Itunes does know about from the same Artist and then right click on song and select reveal in explorer. This will give you the path to folder of similar songs. You then go to folder and select the songs you want re-added to itunes. While it plays it gets re-added. YOu can play a few seconds of the song and then go to next one that needs to be added.

  • ITunes automatically updates song information?

For some reason itunes keeps updating song information and artwork when I already have information / artwork present. How do I switch this off as I find it incredibly annoying?

No its not checked. Basically album art just keeps disappearing and song information is changing itself. Its really odd. I looked through my library today and about 1 in 5 album art is gone. Any ideas?

  • Itunes automatically rating songs.

my itunes automatically rates random songs 5 out of 5 stars.
the stars instead of being filled in, are just outlined.
it's driving me crazy because all these random songs that i don't even like/ know are ending up in my 'Top Rated' playlist.

Sorry for bringing back to life such an old topic, but I may know the answer.
Have you rated the ablum those songs are aprt of? I know that if you rate an album 5 stars, all songs not rated will show 5 outlined stars. Only way I have been able to work around that is to manully rate those songs 1 star, or unrate the album. Hope that helps.

  • I'm trying to get organized and I just added a bunch of books and pdfs to my itunes library. They were all added immediately to my ipad and iphone even though, itunes automatically putting books on my idevices

I'm trying to get organized and I just added a bunch of books and pdfs to my itunes library. They were all added immediately to my ipad and iphone even though I did not want this. I added them to itunes using add to library and I have both devices set to sync only selected books.
How do I do this in the future so this doesnt happen? Its a lot of work to now manually erase them from each device and it sent my phone over capacity.
    thanks

I dont see the difference in the posts. I dont think theres anything inaccurate or misleading about what I wrote. The items were immediately added to my ipad and my iphone, even though I have them both set to sync only select items. As soon as I added new titles to my itunes library, they were immediately added to the devices. Not on the next sync. Immediately. Both devices were plugged into the computer at the time. Sorry if I failed to mention they were plugged in but I dont see the signifigance youre making out of it. The problem persists anyway.
Now that I did a test without the devices plugged in, the new items were still added as soon as I plugged my devices into the computer ( I do not have them set to sync over wifi).
Since I have both devices set to manually select items to sync, of course I want to manually select new items to sync. For instance, I am not going to read any of these magazines or books on my phone, ever, and I dont want to waste valuable space with them.
    So I'm trying your advice:
I just tried deselecting sync books. It erased all content from ibooks on my device. I then dragged
one title onto the device, and it just goes back to syncing select books, with the one title selected.
It appears that wont work to solve my issue. The next time I add something to itunes it will be put on my phone. Is this really something most people want? To select to manualy control what content is synced, but then have things automatically added. It seems inconsistent to me.

  • ITunes automatically adding songs on my computer to my iTunes library

Ok... really this isn't a problem that can be fixed by consulting a forum, but because I can't exactly email apple support, I'm posting here to see if other people have this issue on their minds.
Apple thought it would be intuitive and wonderful for iTunes to have a feature that searches through your hard drive and adds songs to your library as they are downloaded to your computer. As someone who is always being sent new songs, and often listening to songs only once before deleting them, this feature has actually caused a hassle for me. I now have to spend extra time going through my library in order to delete songs I didn't want in my library in the first place.
This is just a plea for iTunes programmers to make this feature OPTIONAL in the next version of iTunes.
    Thanks!

  • How do I get iTunes to automatically put songs in?

I had to reinstall XP. All of my music was backed up but not the playlist. Is there any way to make iTunes search the computer and add all of the music files to the iTunes library? Or am I stuck adding them one album at a time? Thanks

Unfortunatly the company that I bought my computer from put the itunes back on the computer. I was trying to combine two different libraries and it didn't like it. So I just want iTunes to search my hard drive and add all of the music back into it. Does that make any sense?

  • ITunes 11 adding songs to Library which don't show up but can be found by Searching - but can't be player

    Hello,
I got a little problem here...
My iTunes 11 won't show the titles of a new album i tried to import!
I imported them the normal way, after this i recognized there was a problem, i had the album two times. I tried to fix it by changing the album name on every track again... It didn' work so I removed the tracks from my Library... then I wanted to reimport them, but... they just didn't come up...
I looked for them and found them in my Media folder. I deleted them there again and tried to import again... Nothing... they just won't appear in iTunes but are always present in the Media folder!
I can also search for the band in iTunes and can find it, but if i press play (also if the songs can be found in the Media folder) it won't do that... it just doesn't show them, i can't remove them from my Library and can't play them!
Does anyone have a solution for a problem like this?
Sorry If my english is bad at the moment, but i'm very tired and the day wasn't funny at all...

  • ITunes wont put songs into correct folder!!

When I import songs into iTunes, it stores the songs under the wrong folder in "My Music". There is two folders that somehow got mixed up, "iTunes Library" (which is where I would like the songs to go into) and "iTunes Music" (which i dont want to even exist!). Can someone please help me fix this, it is really annoying to do all this manually.
Thanks in advance for all of your help!

Can you post a screenshot of your iTunes > Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab?
Because what you typed sounds normal. The library is a file named iTunes Library.itl and it just holds pointers/references to the actual files in the folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music

  • How do I stop ITunes from loading songs into library when played from an external hard drive

How do I stop ITunes from loading every song I play into my library from an external hard drive?

    Mac OS X: Double-Clicking a File Opens the Wrong Application - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2291
-= Changing the application used to open all files of a certain kind (written with reference to OSX 10.4 but may not have changed) =-
    1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
    2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
    3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
    4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more.  Close the get info window.
    5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
    6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
    7) Close the get info window.

  • Itunes Match: iTunes will match songs in library, will not upload songs not in library. It

Itunes match is going through the endless 3 step cycle for several days now. It will match songs that are in the Itunes Library, it will not upload any songs that are not "matched"
I have tried alot of solutions, turn off match, turn back on, deauthorize, authorize, reboot, exit itunes, delete songs, add songs, turn off auto renew, plug in ethernet, wifi, basically anything posted on here.
Anyones help would be greatly appreciated. Ive been an Apple customer for decades, and this is one of the times where I am greatly disappointed. Thanks.

Yes, itunes just sets a pointer to the Windows files in its ITL database.http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
If you have itunes preference to copy files to your itunes music folder, then it does copy them there and you might now have two copies of the same song. But itunes will probably be using the copy in the itunes music folder.
