I found the answer to my question.
When you attach a device (iPhone, iPad) to your Mac, in iTunes 12 in appears as a tiny icon in the second "row" of the iTunes display. Click the icon and the familiar iTunes display for the device appears. From there, on the Summary screen, you can see the dates of the backups of the device (iCloud and backup to the computer). You can also use the button to backup to the computer.

I purchased a TV series from iTunes and downloaded the HD version. I then copied it to a backup drive so I could plug it in to my DVD player to watch. This would not work. Does anyone know how to convert the files so they are watchable on TV rather than on my MacBook?

Changing iTunes backup location to SAME hard drive

I have an unusual problem. As you are no doubt all aware iTunes will backup your iPhone or iPad automatically to the folder (windows users) c:\users\<username>\appdata etc etc. You can change this to another physical drive using Junction which I have read up on. Unfortunately in my case I actually need to relocate the backups to another location on the SAME hard drive and junction doesn't appear to let me do this.
The reason? We have a client with 50-60 computers on a Windows Server network and utilise roaming profiles. The default backup location means these iTunes backups automatically get uploaded to the server each time a user logs off placingstorage stress on the server as there are dozens of large (32 - 64Gb iPhones and iPads) with multiple backups for each user. I would like to make a separate folder on each users C: drive on their workstation and instruct the iTunes backups to go there instead which will keep it out of the roaming profile.
Anybody have any ideas?

Is iTunes backed up on backup drive??

My iMac won't boot (that's a whole other post I need to submit!) but I need to retrieve old text messages. I backed up my iPhone weekly and my iMac pretty much daily...Would iTunes have backed up the file I need to retrieve these text messages? And what would the file be called on my backup drive? How to retrieve these messages once I find this folder? Many thanks!

yes if you ran Time Machine Backup.
To retrieve it, run the OS X system from the backup, then recover the Phone from iTunes from the Backup.

Backup iTunes Library on Seagate Backup Drive

I'm trying to backup my iTunes music on my Seagate backup drive. When I create a new folder and drag all of my music files into it, dragging that folder to the Seagate drive icon doesn't result in its being copied there.
I have gone to Library and tried to drag the iTunes icon there into the Seagate drive. That is quickly copied there, but it's all text--no music.
What am I doing wrong? How do I make a backup of my iTunes Library with all of its music in my backup drive?

I don't find a /Music/ folder when I open the HD.
Then you ae not looking in the right place.
Go to Macintosh HD\Users\{your username}\.
You should see the following folders...
\Desktop
\Documents
\Dowloads
\Library
\Movies
\Music
\Pictures
\Public
\Sites
But when I open Applications I find an iTunes icon.
That is only the iTunes application. It is not the music files and the library.
Dragging that icon to the external drive caused the contents of my iTunes to copy there. I also found such an icon for iPhoto, which answered my next question.
No it did not. You simply copied the applications to the external. The iTunes library/music files & iPhoto library/photos are not on the external.

Itunes onto backup drive/ bypassing startup disc

Wasn't sure where to post this, hope someone can help.
I have successfully put my ipod library into a folder on my desktop so I can move it to my backup drive rather than take up all that room on my startup disc. However, when I go to copy it onto the backup, I can see the available memory on my startup disc decrease as the folder is copied onto both. Is there a way to bypass the startup disc and just copy to the backup?

Select the hard disk in the Finder and choose Get Info from the File menu; the disk's format will be listed under General. If it is in FAT32, MS-DOS, or Mac OS Standard format, you will need to erase the disk in either HFS+ or UFS before you can use it to boot Mac OS X. To check which Power Mac G4 model you are using, look at the tables and pictures in this article. It is not possible to copy a Mac OS X installation to another partition by dragging it in the Finder, as invisible files and other necessary data won't be copied.

Can I use it for both a backup drive and shared network drive?

Is it possible to use the Time Capsule for both an automatic backup drive for my Mac AND use it as a shared network drive to store my large library of home videos? If so, does it require partitioning the drive and are there instructions available? Alternatively, if I store my home videos on its own network drive, will Time Capsule backup this drive too? If I don't want any external drives tethered to my mac, how would set up the 2 drive scenario, so that home video drive can be shared on the network?
To be specific, I'm looking for a networked drive solution that allows me to do the following:
1) automatically back up my Mac
2) act as the primary storage drive for 750GB of the kids home videos (to save room on Mac) [Side question - ]
3) have the ability to watch the home videos on both my family room Apple TV (is this even possible?) and my kitchen Mac Mini display (would my Mac's iMovie's library be able to include my home video content that is stored on a network drive, or does it require the content to be on the Mac hard drive?).

5) I do not want any drive tethered to my Mac, only wirelessly connected. Would the second drive be connected to the Time Capsule? How would this be set up?

basically yes, but i wouldn't recommend it.

the disk in the TC can't be partitioned in the traditional way. but you can use disk utility to create a "fixed-size" sparse disk image on the TC's disk for use with other data. use the instructions here, just leave out the encryption part.

time machine can not back up from network drives.

consider a NAS that is time machine compatible.

it's possible to stream content stored on a TC (or NAS) to TV. using home sharing, your mini would be able to access files in homeshared libraries.
it doesn't matter where the files are stored as long as iTunes knows they are there. in other words, the content needs to be in an iTunes/TV friednly format and in your iTunes library - that doesn't mean the content can't be stored on an external HD, a TC, or a NAS.

IMO, your best course of action is to get a NAS. if you're interested, i can highly recommend this device by Synology.
Synology NASes play very well with Macs and have excellent backup features on board. given enough space (i have 4x2 TB drives installed) you can store your media files there, use time machine to backup your Macs to it and can use the on-board backup solution to back up the whole shebang to a USB drive connected to the NAS.

Album Artwork not Showing for iTunes Backup

A friend of mine has contacted me with a question that I've ran out of ideas to try. He has an iTunes library where the media files are located on an external disk (formatted HFS+) and he is using a second external drive -- also HFS+ -- for backup (he is currently just copying the files -- I've told him about time machine, but that's a different topic). When he looks at the music files in finder, he sees the album artwork. However, the same is not true on the backup drive.
If I understand the iTunes file layout correctly. Artwork is stored in the same folder as the database files and the media files (music in this case) reference the artwork path. I'm a little confused on why that reference wouldn't work on the backup drive, but it does on the media drive (assuming they are both plugged into the computer where the database/artwork is stored).
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

The covers should show, as soons your short albums will contain more tracks. When your "Summer Sessions EP" has at least five tracks, the cover should be displayed as well, like for your "Conception" album, for there will be enough space for it.

Time Machine and iTunes - huge iTunes backups

I've been using Time Machine since Jan 2009 for my MacBook. I'm having an issue that I don't understand with iTunes. I use the utility TimeTracker (highly recommended) to find out why my backup drive was almost full...turns out it was making a full VMWare image everytime I made a change to Windows. Easy fix.
I still noticed however that I have two backups of over 40GB. Investigating with TimeTracker, it is iTunes. I've checked and it seems the files backed up are not new...most of them anyway.
My question is this...if I restore these backups, will they clog my iTunes with a bunch of duplicates? Don't think I can go through them one at a time. I have a utility to check for duplicates but it seems a pretty laborious process.

if you restore just individual items from the itunes folder and these items exist at present you'll be given a choice to keep both copies or to only keep the restored copies. I suggest you choose the latter. then there won't be any duplicates.

My Master Drive @ 10.4.8 won't boot up now - It auto boots to Backup Drive

As of this morning when I booted up to my Master SATA drive (10.4.8) my secondary ATA drive (Backup OS 10.4) came up instead. This happened before several weeks ago and when I just restarted it booted up with the correct Master drive instead. This time its not happening and the strange thing is when I restart under the Start Disk preference panel with my Master drive highlighted it still boots with the backup drive instead.
Back in Dec 2006 I installed an

Everything has been AOK until now. Can't imagine my ACARD is the problem being that I can still see my master drive when booted under my backup drive. I just can't boot to it and when I throw in a OS X Tiger Install Disk it doesn't see any OS on that drive at all.
The last update for anything that I did was iTunes 7.3 a few days ago.
Anybody have clue or good idea what it could be?

Have you tried going into Disk Utility, on your working drive, and see if you can run a repair on your main drive? Check your S.M.A.R.T status, on that drive, if you are able to see it in there.

If you have DiskWarrior run that instead.

HT4946 How do I get my pictures from an itunes backup?

I have an HP desktop with Windows7. My hard drive crashed and I was wondering if I can retrieve any of my pictures or videos from an itunes sync or backup? I also use icloud with Wi Fi. I had to install a new hard drive so everything was wiped off my computer. I used to be so good about backing up pics and videos onto CDs but haven't lately. These pictures are of my kids and family. I would appreciate any help I can get.

The iTunes backup is meant to send pictures back to your iPhone if they're lost there, not back to your computer. The only photos on the iTunes backup are Camera Roll photos, which are still on your iPhone anyway. Other albums, events, etc. are not backed up in iTunes because it is assumed you back them up from your computer as part of your normal, everyday computer upkeep and maintenance.
So without a computer backup, I'm afraid you're out of luck.

You reformatted the drive in your computer. The backup files you want to access were overwritten when you re-formatted the drive. They are gone. There may be data recovery services that can get them back. Search google if you want. This has absolutely nothing to do with using an iPhone at this point. You deleted files on your computer...

I recently upgraded my old powerbook to an iMac. I've dumped the files of my backup drive into the new iMac. Is there a way to have access to all the files (new and old computers) when logged on as the same user vs. logging in and out to access each?

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac. You should be able to set a password for it. Save it. Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer, I suppose, back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity. As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,

don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine and go for it. You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups of your stuff.
