ITunes backup for photos vs. iPhoto

When backing up photos from my iPhone, will iTunes automatically do this, or should I just transfer them to iPhoto?

I would always import them to iPhoto. There you can organize, edit and set locations/faces more easily. The Albums you create you can then sync back on your iPhone for better overview. Further more your iTunes backup will only store the current state of images. in iPhoto you can store them far back.

Note that you have to actually run the update - where you get the window where you have the choices to "Update" or "Restore" your iPod (you'll of course want to "Update"). It sounds to me like you downloaded the updater but did not actually run it to update your iPod.

You can't see inside a backup file on icloud, thus you can't view your photos at icloud.com.

First, Time Machine doesn't completely back up the iPhoto library while iPhoto is running. Make sure you quit iPhoto after making any changes to allow a backup to take place.
This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including both overt and hidden exclusions. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.
Triple-click the line below to select it:

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy it to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. It sounds like you have an Aperture album that you are trying to transfer to the album section of the Photos app on your iPad. I recommend following these steps to sync the Aperture album over to your iPad:
To sync photos from a Mac or Windows PC to your device using photo applications
Select "Sync Photos from."
Choose the application you want to sync photos from in the pop up menu.
Choose to sync all photos or selected photos. Select "Include videos" to sync videos stored with your photo library.
Click Apply.

The iPhone is not designed or intended to be used as a backup storage device.
The transfer process of photos from your computer is a one way transfer process only.
Photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync/transfer process are optmiized for viewing on your iPhone as part of the iTunes transfer process - the orginal resolution of these photos is reduced on your iPhone. This is why transferring these photos in the opposite direction is not supported. These photos and all other photos stored on your computer's hard drive should be included with your computer's backup along with all other important data.
There are some 3rd party paid utilities that provide for transferring such data in the opposite direction, but the original resolution of these photos will be lost.

I bought an 80GB IPOD Classic primarily as a backup storage device for photos while away for 3 months. I have copied about 4 g of songs onto it (using my main computer and ITUNES) and now plan to use it to back up photos using my Laptop (which doesn't have ITUNES on it).
I realize that I don't want to use the ITUNES Photo Sync as I will be using it on two computers and it will erase and sync the new photo files so I plan to copy and paste the files in using Windows Explorer. I've done a couple of tests and all seems fine - using Explorer I copy Pictures Folders into the IPOD and I can see the files, open them, delete them, etc - and they're the correct size.
My question is this - I can't seem to "see" the photo files on the IPOD itself - when used as a storage device can you not see the photos? Is there another menu I can't find?
Also - I checked off the "Enable Disk Use" and "Full Resolution" in ITUNES - maybe that's not necessary as I'm not using ITUNES for the photos?

You can't "view" anything on your screen that is added to the iPod when using it as a storage device, in the same way that you can't play songs added in that mode either. You can only access those files through Windows Explorer (or Finder on a Mac), you can only view or play anything added through iTunes.

Best external backup for photos?

I currently have more then 32,000 photos on iPhoto. I am very aware that iPhoto starts acting sluggy when you throw that many pictures at it. I need some advice on the best portable hard drive for my photos. I have Passport, but it backs up my entire computer, and I need something JUST for photos.
I tried the My Cloud from Western Digital. At first glance, it was everything I needed-easy to use, enough space (2TB) and manageable from my iPad and iPhoto. But it stripped all of my metadata-all photos uploaded had the present day's date. It didn't keep any of my filenames. This was unacceptable. How was I going to find the things that I needed if it stripped all of my data?
If anyone has any advice on where I can find an affordable backup drive for JUST MY PICTURES that keeps all of my metadata, I'd really appreciate it.

I have 50k+ images and no sluggishness, and an iPhoto 11 Library is good for 250,000 / 1,000,000 images, depending on the exact version you have.

The drive stripped nothing from your photos. You need to decide exactly what you want to back up.
The iPhoto LIbrary - that is, original photos, edit history, all metadata, albums, events, projects:
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk. The disk needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

Note that drag and drop from the iPhoto Window only accesses the iPhoto Previews. This are a medium quality version and missing lots of metadata - they're designed for uses like emailing or sharing into word processing documents. Exporting offers higher quality and much greater continuity of metadata.

ITunes not syncing photos from iPhoto

"Unkown error" messages are becoming usual for iPod users that we are ignoring them because our iPods are syncing fine anyway. Except for error message -208, the new kid on the block! This error message only pops when trying to sync photos from iPhoto (6.0.5 the latest! Syncing photos from any other folder or not syncing photos at all, does not cause any problem. The syncing never has given me this problem (and I have been syncing iPods with pics for a long time!)
How does Apple answer to this problem? Don't blame the iTunes software, because this is definitively a joint problem you guys have with your software not talking to one another.
I have rebuilt everything that can be rebuilt in iPhoto (thumbnails, library), I have downloaded and installed all the latest updates. Reset and restored the iPod... done! Reinstall iTunes, check!
I have posted messages at the iTunes/iPod forum and... no response! Hope the Apple staff is more friendly here... or at least one of the seasoned users...

You may have figured it out by now. None of the resetting of the iPod or the rebuilding of the iPhoto library (command+option) or permission rebuilding works to solve a -208 error when the error refers to an iPhoto library sync with iTunes. Supposedly, this error occurs with corrupt AIFF files as well. This error will occur on different iPods which try to sync to the same iPhoto library. The iPhoto library is definitely corrupted. Mine was due to a sudden power loss.
NOTE: I do not "Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when adding to library" under Advanced iPhoto preferences, so that my photos don't have a chance of getting messed up (like error -208s). If you do, the steps below may be different for you. Always a good idea to back up your photos.
Here is how I fixed it. All the steps may not be necessary. Go to /pictures directory under your user (or wherever your iPhoto library is located), and rename the "iPhoto Library" or whatever you called it to something else, like "iPhoto Library 2". Open iPhoto, and it can't find the library, and asks if you want to find it or create a new one. Tell it to create a new one, and put at least a picture in the library. Sync with iPod, which should work without error and put the picture on your iPod. Close iTunes. Close iPhoto. Now, to save all your pictures (thumbnails) already in the iPhoto library, copy everything BUT "iPod Photo Cache" folder, which seems to be the culprit, from the "iPhoto Library 2" folder into the "iPhoto Library" folder. Open iPhoto, and all your pictures should now be in the library. Open iTunes and sync iPod, and all your pictures should sync out without error.

Why is my iCloud backup for photos 3.3 Gbs but I only have 12 photos in my camera roll?

After purchasing my iPhone 4S I performed a restore from backup that I had from my iPhone 4 (running iOS 4.3.5). Prior to doing this restore, I did not realize that my photos were not being synchronized from my iOS device and saved in that backup. So, the hundreds of photos I had on my iPhone 4 were lost in the transfer to my 4S; but then I noticed something odd. Upon closer inspection of my iCloud backup, my storage usage says my camera roll is taking up 3.3 Gbs of my backup! When I did the backup, I had only taken about 12 pictures on my 4S, there was absolutely no way those photos were taking up 3.3 Gbs of space. I was hoping that after synchronizing with iCloud that I would see all my old photos slowly pour in from the Photo Stream; but to no avail.
Is it possible that my iPhone 4 photos were in fact carried with that restore from backup, but are not showing up in my camera roll? If so, how do I retrieve my photos? So many lost memories!

That's odd. I can't imagine what else would take up so much space.
Have you any other Apps that have downloaded data
.. appdata and settings of apps, "preferences", saved games "levels reached" , and downlaoded stuff that are stored within an app ", for example videodownloading app that has stored content in the iOS are uploaded ..
Apps themself /Books/Music/etc are not uploaded to your personal cloud, they are held back by Apple in the store for future re-downloading options. So this can't also be the culprit.

ITunes cannot sync photos from iPhoto because of same filename

I have 2 iPhones that both import into a single iMac using iPhoto with a shared library (i.e., two user accounts accessing the same iPhoto library in the Shared folder). The iPhones are set to sync the last 5 Events from iPhoto, however it fails to do so with certain pictures stating "Some of your photos, including the photo “IMG_0513.JPG”, were not copied to the iPad “My iPad” because they cannot be displayed on your iPad". I think I have determined that the problem is that both iPhones are naming various pictures with the same filenames since the naming is simply sequential. Therefore, both iPhone have images named IMG_513.JPG, for example, even though they are different images and though iPhoto doesn't have a problem with that the iPhone and iPad do. My current solution is to have iPhoto duplicate the photos that won't sync (I assume this creates another file with a 2 affixed to it) and delete the original. It's a pain to do that, but I haven't found any other way to change the filenames once they've been imported or change how the iPhone name the photos when they're taken. Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem. I have over 5000 photos in my iPhoto Library. I have used several different cameras over the years, so I have some duplicate file names...IMG_XXXX. This has never been a problem before. But, I am trying to sync to my brand new iPad 2. I have been able to transfer about 1200 photos, but I get the same warning that you get.
There is no option to skip the problem photo(s) and keep sync going. It just stops.

Fonts for photo albums - iphoto 09

I'm using ilife 09 to make a hardcover photo book. I want to use the Hiragino Minco Pro font that was available in the previous version of iphoto on the cover, flaps and intro page. It didn't show up in settings menu so I copied and pasted it from a previous photo book onto these pages in the new book. It looks fine on the page and the font shows up in settings menu. But there is an exclamation point in red triangle in the subhead on cover it says type doesn't fit. The settings tool won't let me change the size, and actually won't let me change the font (I chose 6 pt and it still says it won't fit).
Question: Because I copied and pasted it will it actually show up correctly when book is printed at Apple? Since the font doesn't change on the page when I change it in the settings tool, it seems like something isn't connecting correctly.
Question: What does the W3 and W4 mean next to the font name in Settings. I only see it next to the Hiragino Minco Pro (where as Helvetica has choices of Regular, ital, etc.)
Question: Now that ilife 11 is out, will I be able to publish this new book without having to upgrade? If so, I might have more font problems if Apple discontinues some of the 09 fonts.

The triangle indicates that there is some overflow of text in the text box. Does all the text appear in the text box? If it does then maybe there's a return or some spaces that are causing the overflow.
If you can't reduce the size so that the text fits the order will probably be cancelled. You can and should check the book before ordering by right-clicking on the background of the All Pages view and select Preview Book:

Then save the preview as a PDF file. This will give you the same PDF file that is sent to Apple for printing. If the text displays correctly there then it will print.
If you are unable to get the font to fit you may have to resort to creating a custom page. That will require, however, using an image editor that can handle layers:

WHERE is Metadata stored for photos in iPhoto?

I need to find out WHERE all the information I have entered for various photos in my 3000+ photo collection is physically stored.
So, when I bring up a photo, from within iPhoto, and enter a Title, date, time, Comments, etc. WHERE does iPhoto actually put that information? More importantly, I need to BACK-UP that data, so need to know where it's stored to do that.
I just moved a folder within the iPhoto Library folder ( A B-I-G 'No-No' obviousely! ) and BOOM... all my photos were GONE, along with MONTHS worth of time it took me to organize, label and notate information on every single photo in my library - most were scanned in from those boxes of photos we all have under our beds, etc. and they contained only the date I brought them into iPhoto. Since I have photos going back to the mid-eighteen hundreds, dates in 2003 or 2005 don't quite hack it! Now I'm starting from scratch to do it all again, and want to make SURE I am able to back-up that data this time.

For future reference there are a couple of Applescripts for copying the EXIF information from iPhoto to a file and/or back to iPhoto - http://scriptbuilders.net/files/iphotoiptckeywordimportexportutilities1.0.html.
iPhoto does not do a great job in keeping metadata/EXIF info tied to the files except within iPhoto itself and, as you've experienced, that can be fragile. Image management applications like iView MediaPro write nearly all annotations directly back to the file itself.

Location of Pictures for Photo vs iPhoto

Where are all my pictures stored once they were moved from iPhoto to Photo? Why does synch in iTunes only give the default location of Pictures rather than Photo library??

They remain in each library in your /Home/Pictures/ folder. Change the sync setting in iTunes - be sure you get the recently updated version.
