ITunes became corrupt and crashed my system

After I updated and installed the latest iTunes, my system crashed and began behaving 'viral'. After running AVG and Spybot S&D a few times each and finding nothing, I restored windows to an earlier known good configuration. Just before doing that, I removed what I thought was 'malicious' software from add/remove programs - included in this action was the removal of 'bonjour'.
After restoring my system, iTunes and Quicktime will not open. Nor can I uninstall and reinstall them because it gives an error that a necessary file is on a disk.
Can someone please tell me how I can reinstall my iTunes and Quicktime?

I fixed it!!!!

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

Sorry genius.....but if the Recovery disk shows up that means the disk cable isn't bad.  Could be he did have a screwed up HDD and when he put the NEW HDD in (after putting the OS on it via USB) the computer didn't reconize it and therefore didn't boot the OS.  Just maybe right genius?  Don't rush to criticize someone's recommendations until you realize other possibilities.  (I did say "if it does")

Try running the .dmg installer for the most recent version of iTunes, downloaded from the Apple website:

Aha, a somewhat different question. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • ITunes is freezing and crashing my iBook

    Hi
    I need help
Got an iPod video for xmas and have just started to use iTunes- it has been on my system since I bought it. Transferred a lot of music into iTunes to load it onto the iPod. System froze (OS 10.3), tried to restart, it could not find the hard drive, waited tried again, same problem. Decided to reload OS, first attempt still could not find the hard drive, it only found the CD Rom drive. Restarted the system without the CD/DVD drive closed, once the system started to boot, closed the drive and it found the hard drive, after about 10 minutes. Attempted to load the music from iTunes to the iPod, after about 100 songs the system froze. The machine does not sound the same, many more scratching sounds coming from the hard drive. Is it my hard drive, the iTunes. Any thing can't hurt at this point. Thanks

    Hi, dionnebsmith -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
The first thing to do is to determine whether the problem is with the mouse, or with the computer and/or operating system.
To do that, use (borrow one if need be) a different, known-good mouse. Connect it and restart the machine. If the problem does not recur, then you know the issue is with the mouse itself.
Specific issues that can cause problems like this -
    • The Apple Pro mouses, like the ones that came with older G4 models, have an inherent defect - the wires inside the cable can fray at the point the cable leaves the mouse body. This can result in random open and/or closed circuits, with resulting bizarre cursor behavior and crashes. If this is the case, replacement of the mouse is the solution.
    • The keyboard contains an unpowered hub; some devices, including some optical mouses, can overload that hub's ability to pass power. This can result in hangs of the USB circuits, and cause crashes. The solution for this is to reconfigure the USB connection scheme so that the offending device is not connected to the keyboard (the G4 has two separate USB ports on the back).

    • Although rarely causing crashes, there is an issue which can cause a general slowdown of Finder -

  • My computer became corrupted, and I reinstalled windows, only to find my iphone will no longer sync with the same computer. How do I sync my phone and tones to the same computer without losing everything?

This is my first time using this forum, and I apologize if my post isn't "normal" or if my question is too long. My old acer computer had become corrupted and I had to reinstall my copy of windows. When I tried to sync a new ringtone to my iphone, which was only ever synced to this same computer, I was prompted to delete everything I had so I could install one ringtone. That does not sound ideal, and I refuse to delete everything I've put on my phone and my data to sync to itunes. There has to be another way to show my phone that this is the same computer. So I do not have to go through the hassle of doing everything again. I could not find an answer in the forums, and hope you can help me. This is pretty close to being a deal breaker for me. I'm beyond frustrated with this policy.
I don't believe it matters, but I'm running the latest version of itunes, as of today, and I have an iPhone 4 CDMA iOS 7.4.

Thanks, Lawrence. I figured that was what I was going to have to do in the end. I have a few games with quite a few hours invested, and I worry that I'll lose the progress I have as they do not save to the cloud. I may have to bite the bullet, and just take the plunge to resolve this. I just want a way to easily transfer my "Home Computer" for my iPhone. My laptop is years old and in need of being replaced, and it's about time to upgrade my phone. These life events piling up are making me consider switching to a friendlier OS. I'm not using this as a threat. I just hope some apple high up will read this, and realize that we need alternatives. Life happens.
Thank you both Paul and Lawrence. I clicked "This helped me" not knowing it would remove the option to choose "This fixed my problem" too. For anyone else reading this thread. Using the guide provided has done both. It has helped me and given me a fix to my current problem. Lawrence has also provided me with the last bit of information I feel is missing from wjosten's guide. That syncing will completely erase all of your data and reinstall it in one fell swoop. It's a great fix. Even if it isn't the exact one I wanted. Thank you again!

  • I had to install a new hard drive because my old hard drives boot files became corrupted, and i want to get all of my music files off the old hard drive and regain all my play counts/ratings/playlists

    Greetings everyone
as the title says, ive had to install a new hard drive  and i want to transfer my old itunes library onto the new drive, maintaining all playlists/play counts/ratings etc, album artwork if possible. The old hard drive is installed as a slave drive and is completely acessible, but due to the boot files being corrupted i cannot use it as the main drive and therefore operate my old itunes. Also, my ipod no longer contains my music library as itunes synced without my permission and wiped it.
The only thing i have tried is copying all of my old music files from the old drive by selecting 'add folder to library' and then the old drive, then replacing the new itunes library.itl file with the one from my old itunes. This restores all my playlists and playcounts but when i try to play any of the songs it says that the files could not be found, and i dont fancy locating  8500 music files individually!
Thankyou for taking the time to read my post, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ah, my reply was based on the assumption that you had a default installation of iTunes.
i.e you had all your music in the iTunes media folder inside your iTunes folder.
If your iTunes folder is so small compared to the amount of music you have, you must have a different arrangement.
    This complicates you situation considerably.
iTunes can cope with moving around as long as all the music is in the iTunes media folder, not not if it isn't.
Your first step should be to get iTunes working on the old drive. This will involve editing the xml library file so that the drive letter is correct and then rebuilding the library from the xml file.
Then you will need to consolidate your library which moves everything into the iTunes media fodler. After that you will be able to use my first suggestion.
    Step 1
Find the iTunes folder on the old drive and copy the two library files somewhere else so you can find them again. That's iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml.
Now open the copy of iTunes Library.xml with WordPad.
    Look for lines starting:
    Location
These contain the paths to tracks.
You will need to use a find/replace to change the drive letter so that it is correct.
Make sure that you include enough in the "find" so that you only change the right thing.
Maybe /c:/ and replace with /d:/ or whatever.
After that, tell iTunes to use the library on the old drive with a shift key start.
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes, keep holding the shift key until you are prompted to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the old drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
    Then use the method in the following article to rebuild your library;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
Unfortunately the date added will be today for all tracks.
If iTunes works correctly after this, consolidate your library
    File>>Library>>Organize>>consolidate
This copies all tracks into to iTunes media folder and could create a problem if you do not have disk space so don't do it if you are unsure about free disk space.
Check that iTunes works OK and then use the first method.

    Hi there,
You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes in order to get it working again. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • The latest version of iTunes is defective and crashes making bug troubles

The latest version of iTunes for Windows is crashing and deleting anything, including purchased or syncronized form iPod music stored in it every time the PC is turned off.
I was unaware of this problem, and continued to authorize the new iTunes on new PC at any request. Now I have still one PC with one iTunes on it, but all authorizations are finished, becouse the iTunes believes that all five more PC's were authorized.
Also I changed to new PC, and downloaded new iTunes on it. This way my iPod does not recongises the new iTunes on new PC in order to link and sync.
All the songs bought on iPod cannot be sync and transfered to the iTunes, and vice versa, all songs bought or stored from CD on iTunes cannot be synchronised with the iPod.

  • ITunes library corrupted and erased

I had a message pop up in my iTunes Library that said the files were corrupted and I needed to install the newer version. I lost all of my library on my computer, but still have it on my ipod. Any way I can retrieve it? When I plug it it, I get the messags that my ipod is synced with another library, which it's not and the options of "erasing and syncing" or "transfer purhaches" to my library, which is now empty. Any way I can retrieve my library from my ipod and restore it to my computer library?

    Hi,
Try restoring iTunes library from your backups.
