Itunes blank, library wont import

dear community,
i use a PC with Vista. when i upgraded to itunes 8.1 i was unable to record CDs or watch DVDs so at the suggestion of other users, i removed 8.1 and went back to 7.1. however my library could not be opened because it was created with a previous version. i found the library folder and tried to drag and drop into itunes 7.1 but it won't drop. the music shows up in a folder by alpha order. there is also a music data file (itl). i've tried dragging and dropping both files but it wont work. i tried moving one song to see if that would work and it did! however, it says i have to give it permission to play on my computer. i can't imagine clicking and dragging over 500 songs one at at time and then having to give each one permission to play!! any suggestions on what i'm doing wrong? PLEASE?

Quit trying to move the ITL file. You're right, it won't drag and drop into iTunes. It's not designed for that.
You need to use the shift-start to open itunes using that ITL file from version 7.
Press *and hold* the shift key while starting itunes. Choose that ITL file when prompted.

That article says itunes 8.1 but it still work in itunes 7

  • Itunes music library wont appear on new computer

    Hello
I am sure that in the past when I have authorised a computer that all of the music I have had in my library has appeared. Yesterday my computer got broken beyond repair so I have had to go out and buy a new one. I have downloaded ITunes and signed in and authorsied the new computer but for some reason the only songs that are appearing in my library are 4 songs which I have purchased. All the other songs that I have previously put on there from cds are no longer showing. Why is this as I never had this problem when I purchased the last computer and did the exact thing I am trying to do now. If anyone can help that would be great and sorry if this is in the wrong place, have never used this site before. Thank you.

Authorizing a computer for your Apple ID only authorizes it to play media purchased with the Apple ID.  In addition, you can associate up to 5 computers with your ID to download previous purchases.  (Associating a computer happens when you download previous purchases, enable automatic downloads, or sign into iTunes Match.)
However, iCloud only has music and other media purchased from the iTunes store.  Your personal music from your CDs is only stored in the iTunes library on your computer unless you subscribe to iTunes Match.  If you do, your library (up to 25,000 songs) is then availble through iCloud.
If you changed computers in the past, the only way you would have been able to access your other music would be if you had copied the iTunes folder from your old computer to your new one, or re-imported your CDs.
If the hard drive in your old computer still functions, you could put it in a usb inclosure and copy the entire iTunes folder to your new computer as explained here under "External Drive" starting at "Part 2": http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527.

  • Library wont import, but the playlist will....??

When I click and drag a music file to the library tab on itunes, it will not accept the song, but if I drag the file to a playlist it will import it, what gives?

I will drag the songs from an open file on my desktop to the library tab. The library tab will only blink once meaning that the song did not attatch. When I drag the song to a playlist the tab will blink the normal 2 or 3 times and the song will appear in the playlist file on itunes. I would like al of my songs to be in the main library instead of going back and forth to a playlist. Thanks Eric

  • ITunes wont import!

my itunes 8.1.1 is having major problems, it wont import any music files, Quicktime 7.6 opens them fine but not itunes, no error message or anything, it shows the normal green "+" sign when i drag the song over the itunes window but when i let go it does nothing, ive tried mp3s aiffs and wav files, it wont import music i purchase from the itunes store either, it gives an error stating:
"There was a problem downloading "song name", an unknown error occurred (-50)"
i tried using pacifist to go back to v 8.0.2 but it says it cant use the music library files because they were created by a newer version of itunes, i re-installed 8.1.1 install was successful, but still wont import anything.
i tried repairing permissions on my HD but still no luck, what do i do?
    -Jon D

I had this problem with iTunes 8.2. It refused to import any .MP3 or .AIFF files either by dropping the file on to the iTunes icon or by using "Add to Library". No error messages, just did not import the file. OTher media players played the files just fine.
I've just solved my import problem, but I don't know if my solution is a general one.
When I looked at Preferences / Advanced, the iTunes Music folder location was showing as blank, (though despite this iTunes was using my library OK, it was just import that was not working). Simply trying to change the location using iTunes Preferences / Advanced had no effect on the import problem.
I use an external drive for my iTunes library, with the music folder location set using an alias on the internal hard drive pointing at the library on the external drive. The alias was pointing at the correct place, but for some reason the alias was not appearing in the iTunes Preferences / Advanced / iTunes Music folder location window.
    My solution was as follows:
    - I re-selected the original that the alias was pointing at using "Select New Original" in the File / Get Info window.
    - I then "reset" the location of iTunes music folder in iTunes to the same old alias file I'd been using all along.
This seems to have solved the problem. Files import fine now.
Hope this helps somebody, it was a real pain not being able to import anything.

You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before.

  • HT1751 Hi, I tried to restore my itunes library from an external drive and did everything that's written here step by step.when I chose the itunes library to import itunes just said that its accessing the itunes store but nothung happened. I'm working on

Hi, I tried to restore my itunes library from an external drive and did everything that's written here step by step. when I chose the itunes library to import itunes just said that its accessing the itunes store but nothing happened. Does anyone know how to do this so that all my playlists are also imported and not just the music itself?

When I have done this, all I did was network the two machines and copy the contents of the iTunes folder to the other machine, and that's it.
My understanding (which may not be 100% correct) is that the one file that is absolutely necessary is iTunes Library, and that the XML file is actually a copy auto-generated from the iTunes Library, appearing in a different format only for non-iTunes apps that take advantage of the iTunes Library data.
As far as I know, if you simply have the Library (database) file and all your original music files, iTunes on that computer should operate as it did on your old computer. I believe that the Album Artwork, Genius Data, and XML files can be regenerated from the Library file. Not sure about the Extras file.

  • ITunes folder bombarded with iT and Temporary iTunes files = Blank Library

I opened my iTunes folder and there's a long list of iT files and temp files that using up a lot of memory... according to past topics, it's completely okay to erase them
    BUT
the really problem is whenever I open up iTunes, the cursor indicates its taking a long time and after about 20 seconds it opens up with a blank library. Apps, music, videos, everything's gone. I make a playlist and a new temp file is formed in my itunes folder. 's been happening since novemeber -_-

Is that a Sony Vaio you have there?
If so it may have software that is not compatible with iTunes, see this thread:

Just tried to import a new CD into my iTunes music library, but get this error code "error occurred while converting file. You do not have the privilege to make changes"....any thoughts? Have not tried to change anything- only import CD ??

Do you have read& write permissions to your iTunes library?
See this thread: Re: "Error has occurred... You do not have the privilege to make changes."

  • Itunes will not create a blank library, it creates a new library with all of my same content from the other library. I followed the instructions but itunes will not give me a blank library???

I have looked up how to create the new blank itunes library and every site has the same copy and pasted instructions. They are simple but have no troubleshooting solutions. It creates my wifes new library with all of the same content from my library. How can I make the whole thing blank so I can sync her new device without putting all of my stuff on there?

Having opened the supposedly blank library go to Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. Should clear things up.

  • Big Library wont allow itunes to open?

I have a huge library ( 62000 songs) and since the last update my itunes simply doesn`t open anymore. It keeps checking itunes library and then just crashes. HELP PLEASE!

That sounds more like your Library file (either the iTunes Library.itl or the iTunes Music Library.xml) has become corrupted.
You may have to bite the bullet and dump these files, which means re-importing everything.
Before trashing them and emptying the trash, I'd recommend copying them to a flash drive and THEN dumping the Library files.
If you can open iTunes and re-import everything, great. If not, put the original files back, and hopefully someone else will have more insight.

  • Can't Create new BLANK Library in iTunes 11

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere.  Since iTunes 11,  I can no longer create a new BLANK library; without in seconds it begins to fill up with songs from my main library.  With iTunes 10.7 I could create a new BLANK library and  then fill it with all Beatles; or Dylan; or whatever.
I don't see the point of creating a new library any more.  I was told by Apple Care that it all has to do with the CLOUD.  Give me back the right to create a new BLANK library.  By the way I did it online so my Apple Care person could see it fill up.  She saiid in iTunes 11 I would have to sign out; in order to get blank library. That's pretty inconvenient. Any thoughts PLEASE.
    Thank You.

Jim, thanks for such a quick reply.  I'll I give it a try.  I came from a Windows background using 10.7 and the cloud wasn't a problem at the time; until iTunes  11 came out for both platforms.  Thanks again.  Im loving the iMac and your answer will make it a better experience.   You should work for Apple Care
