ITunes blocks MBP shut down

power on MBP - open iTunes - can't shut down (white screen, spinning wheel)
power on MBP - open most of other software - shut down is OK!
I've tryed a lot of things like reset SMC and PRAM, repair permissions, verify disk, safe boot, quit (and force quit) iTunes before shut down etc., but nothing helps.

  • 2011 MBP shuts down when connected to external display

I've been using my 2011 15" MBP for about a week now with no problem until today when I tried to connect it to my old 20" cinema display. I have the mini display port hooked up to the dvi adapter and a usb connection hooked up to external keyboard and mouse. Everything works just fine if I keep the lid up on the MBP, but if I shut the lid, the MBP shuts down. Down, not that the big screen goes black & then comes on again. It turns itself off.
Any way I can avoid a trip to the Apple store? In the past, the "geniuses" knew less about external displays than I did. Is there an issue because of the dual graphics cards?

no - I realized later that the machine doesn't shut off it just acts like it. The hard drive stops spinning & the screen remains black no matter what I do. This doesn't happen when I just shut the lid & then go back to working on it.
Then if I shut it again & try to get the monitor to respond, I get a blue screen of death color with a two inch band of blue noise along the left side. Very weird.

  • When an internet connection is available, I run iTunes and it shuts down on my Windows 7 64bit computer.

When an internet connection is available, I run iTunes and it shuts down on my Windows 7 64bit computer.  It used to crash when I went to the iTunes store but, after installing the newest version of iTunes it crashes if there is an internet connection.  I can turn off my internet access and then run the software but, once I try the iTunes store again it crashes.  It does not give an error message as to why its doing this.  Just says it encountered a problem.  I cannot do anything with my iPad or iPod without this working.  Its extremely frustrating.
I have also contacted Apple several times and they give me links to other's problems but, none have worked to fix this.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.

    This is what worked:
"In iTunes, I signed out of the store. I exited itunes and restarted it, logged back into the store (with my apple id), then I pulled down the iTunes menu in the menu bar and selected Check for updates.
At this point it said that iTunes 11.1 was available and I'm downloading now " Quoted from a fellow user.
    It fixed my problem.

  • Itunes will not shut down on mac

My itunes will not shut down when I close it out.  The itunes ball will bounce up and down and reopen itself.
I am running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and this has started in the last 3 weeks.
I thought it was my blackberry software and had that removed.  It has continued afterwards.
I do have all of my music on an external hard drive.
    Thanks

Thanks wjosten I have read that and all the links in it. I did finally get it to work. I downloaded iTunes and reinstalled it. Now the one computer I wanted it to work with is OK.

  • MBP shuts down unexpectedly when on battery

Today my MBP shuts down unexpectedly when on battery. It started at about 50%. I seems to happen if I don't a thing for a short while when I read something or so. I most of the time when using mu MBP have it on the net cord but today I wanted to work the battery.
Does anyone know what it could be? I have searched in the forum but the answers hasn't been satisfying. I find it weird that I have to use the keyboard or the track pad to keep going.

Not sure what the cause is but you can try resetting the SMC.

  • MBP shuts down suddenly when running in battery mode

    Hi
I am from Zaragoza (Spain) and lately (about 2 months ago as I can remember) my mbp shuts down when running in battery mode and without any advice. I see some of you also have this problem.
I thought it was me not seeing the low battery indicator but last week I realized the battery was above 40%!!
This problem has been repeating and the battery level was between 40% and 60% when my computer shut down.
What am I supposed to do? My MBP is still in warranty and I bought it in the online apple store.
    Thanks for the help.

In the system profiler it says the cycle count to 24. The laptop is from late March 2008.
The battery info is the following:
    Battery Information:
    Model Information:
    Serial Number: Sony-ASMB012-3841-b0b7
    Manufacturer: Sony
    Device name: ASMB012

    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 0110

    Cell Revision: 0303
    Charge Information:

    Cycle count: 24
    Condition: Check battery
    Battery Installed: Yes

I did the SMC reset, but I cannot complete the Battery Calibration, the laptop shuts down at half charge battery and does not go to sleep mode.
    Thanks for your help.

  • MBP shutting down by itself

    Help!
I don't know why my MBP shuts down by itself,
the first time it happened was when i was burning something from idvd
then it happened again when I was just typing something, then again when I was just surfing. Then when i tried to turn it on, it went off again..then finally it is working now.
Is it possible this is happening because of the replacement batteries? i bought my MBP last february when it went out, so it is part of the battery recall. right now im using the replacement. what should i do?
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It's not the battery. Many of the Mac Books have a far more serious problem with their internal hardware.
The first thing i suggest is repair your permissions.
Secondly, make sure you have updated firmware.
    Thirdly, try reseating your ram.
Last, alert Applecare. Tell them your problem, and the steps you have taken.
It is likely that you will need to:
a.) have your logic board replaced (it will take about a week, including shipping)
    or b.) need a replacement.
I just went through all of this. If you want me to walk you through anything, just let me know.

  • MBP shutting down unexpectedly even though battery meter still has charge

    Hi,
just in this last week, my MBP has been shutting itself down very suddenly when on battery power when there's still charge left.
At first there was about 25% charge left. Over the next few days, that went up progressively till today it is now shutting itself down with more than 50% charge left.
Has anyone had issues such as this? and what should i do to rectify it?
I'm going to try recalibrating the battery.
I don't usually use the MBP with the power connected
I try where I can to charge and then disconnect and use till power is low.

I was having same problem: meter shows plenty of charge left, yet MBP shuts down. When I decided to take a look at my battery (also with recall in mind) was horrified to find it swollen and warped so badly -- pushing out of its casing. Could barely get it out and then back in. That I'm getting any charge at all amazes me considering how badly the battery is misshapen.
Has anyone else had this problem? I'm beginning to think Apple's not being quite up-front about the seriousness of the problem: Yes, MBP gets hot, yet no more than my old PowerBook and iBooks.
But, had we been given batteries which are perhaps really unsafe, not to mention causing lost work time and maybe systemic difficulties?

  • MBP shuts down when battery at appox. 30%

    Hello,
    I have a 17" MBP 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
Recently (in the last 3-4 days) it has decided to shut down completely when the battery charge falls to around 30%. Prior to these symptoms appearing, it behaved normally with the 'low battery warning' appearing at about 5% and then going to sleep mode as opposed to shutting down.
I have reset the SMU by removing the adapter, battery and pressing the power button for 5 secs. Unfortunately the symptoms remain. Obviously I cannot re-calibrate the battery as it won't carry on below 30% charge without the MBP shutting down.
I'll be taking a trip to my local Apple dealer in the next few days but was wondering if anyone else here has any further suggestions I could try.
    Many thanks in advance.

...Hopefully Apple will do something about this. It doesn't seem right that the battery would fail this early! Especially after spending so much on a computer!
Umm... of course Apple will do something. I do not understand why you felt you had to add that to your reply. Allow me to explain:
    1. I have AppleCare, therefore if it's a hardware issue then any repair will be carried out without any cost to me.
    2. Apple have introduced a 'battery exchange and extension' program:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
If the battery is at fault, regardless of whether I have AppleCare or not, the battery will be replaced as it falls within the terms of the extension program.
I have just now reset the PRAM and am running on battery power. I'll know in the next couple of hours whether that has had any effect or not.
Meantime, if anyone else has any additional suggestions as opposed to 'me too' type replies I would be very grateful.
    Many thanks.

I have a MBP that is running 10.5.8. When the power gets low and the MBP shuts down, I have to reboot it (push the power button). This is not the case with our iBook, or MacBook (I should double check it), here we just plug it in, hit the space bar and it starts up where it left off (just like it was asleep).
Is there some setting or ?
    Thanks

If there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation or set up Service and take or send to Apple for resolution. If no coverage, you can use virtual Lock Button. Tap Settings App > General > Assessibility > Assistive Touch > ON > tap new white screen button > Device > Lock Screen. This can even be used to turn OFF iPhone, by holding down on it. To turn iPhone ON, connect to power, charger or USB of computer.

  • MBP shuts down normally but won't power up unless reset

Upgraded to Leopard about a week ago. Since then: MBP shuts down normally. But a simple press to the power button won't start it up. If I press and hold it, then press again, it will start up. Seems to be functioning just fine otherwise.

Ultimately this machine ended up back at apple, was repaired under warranty, and works fine.

  • MBP shuts down on AC power

    sorry for the long post.
Got my mbp back from apple with new logic board and battery after repeated kernel panics. 2nd day in after running new battery down to about 20%, plugged into AC and poof, mbp shuts down. Will not boot up while plugged in. Installed secong battery and boots up fine. BUT, after this battery goes down past 30% and upon plugging into AC mbp shuts down again.
Pulling battery and running on AC alone works fine, but cannot work while charging. Must keep it off and charge until green light on magsafe.

Took in to apple store. They replaced the logic board [again] and the whole power connector assembly for the ac adapter. Also the left fan and the temperature control gauge(?)
Well that's it folks! We're back up and running now!
thanks for the views and replies.
