ITunes breaks Airplay extend desktop via Apple TV

Hi there, using my MPBr 15in with Yosemite installed and an Apple TV.
I have been watching photoshop tutorials in an iTunes playlist via extended desktop (Video played on extended desktop on TV, I'm following along with Photoshop on my mac).
I had put my mac on charge and did some things for a while, came back and went to continue my tutorials. But for some unknown reason when I select play in iTunes, instead of just playing on the extended desktop like it was earlier, iTunes quits the extended mode, 'sends' the video to the Apple TV which is a bit of a bumpier process then I'd like. Not to mention it needs to 'buffer' the video each time the next one is played. The worst issue is that the video is zoomed in too far, meaning I cannot see the photoshop tools or the menus along the top and no way to change it (it seems at least). I could forgo the Airplay streaming if it didn't have that issue.
No Apple account is signed in to the Apple TV.
I have tried changing a couple settings in Apple TV (including overscan settings on/off) to no avail. Also changed iTunes setting of Airplay that appears next to the volume slider. No matter what I try when I play the video, extended desktop mode turns off and iTunes streams just the video to Apple TV, also meaning I have to completely disconnect from Apple TV and reconnect again.
So my question is, how do I force iTunes to not use Airplay streaming when I have specifically configured the computer to extend the desktop? I want to extend the desktop!! Using the multiple desktop feature is useful!
Why does it assume I want to stream it independently rather than keep the second desktop?
Why has it done it now, instead of before? I never pressed anything that I know of. It just decided to do it.
If for whatever reason there is no way to turn this auto configuration off, how do I stream the video so it does not cut off the edges?
Thanks in advance. If I figure it out I'll be sure to post what I found here.

Troubleshoot the network, starting with power cycling the ATV and router.

  • Extended Desktop via 1 HDMI possible ?

    Hi, I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro w/Retina Display 15” Quad Core 2.6Ghz i7 with 16Gb ram.
Running the latest OS (10.10.3) and all latest updates, etc..
I have 2 23” Apple Cinema Displays which are DVI. I would like them to be used as “Extended Desktop” style on this computer.
I understand this is possible via the Thunderbolt ports (correct?), but would ideally like them to come out the HDMI port (and work like “Extended Desktop”).
This is because I will have the bandwidth of my Thunderbolt bus maxed out. And would hate for the video to slow anything down as I will have many drives and interfaces on the TB ports that need the data.
I am not looking to mirror the displays, but want “Extended Desktop”. I am hoping the 1 HDMI port can support that somehow, maybe with adapters ?
Any input would be greatly appreciated as far as my options.
    Thanks !

  • G4 Extended Desktop via 'dual display'

My G4 has two outputs from the Nvidia Card, a standard vga and the
'rounded edge' style AppleDisplay output. Two part question here:
    1) may I simply use an appledisplay connector-to-vga converter dongle,
in order to send through that second output to a standard vga (non apple)
    monitor?
    2) Would using these outputs simultaniously render the 'extended desktop',
or are they just a duplicate of the same output?
Thank you kindly for any info on this.

It depends on which NVIDIA card you have. Anything older then the GeForce4 MX won't run two VGA displays. The GeForce2 MX TwinView can run two displays, but the ADC to VGA adapter won't work with this card, so only one can be VGA.
If your card does support dual displays, you can choose mirrored or extended desktop in the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference.

  • Mavericks AirPlay Extend Desktop as FCPX A/V Output?

    Hi all,
Has anybody been successful at using the new "Extend Desktop" mode for AirPlay in Mac OS X Mavericks to setup an AppleTV as an external monitor for Final Cut Pro X? I tried but when I go to Preferences...->Playback A/V Output says "None Found". I just think it would be a convenient, inexpensive way of leveraging the AppleTV as a monitor.
    Any ideas?

Thanks Luis. As you say: "more or less". Besides the lag it's also a bit buggy. I had to switch applications a couple of times for the viewer to show and respond. Also, full screening the viewer make the main monitor go all black, so you can't really have a full screen viewer and the interface on another screen. At least I couldn't figure out how. But this is better than nothing I guess. Thanks for the tip!

  • Extended desktop = slow startup

Hi, Im using IMac mid 2011, extended desktop via VGA converter (Apple product).
About an years ago (Maybe it was a time when I started use extended desktop via VGA converter), my IMac starting to slowdown on startup, here is the symptom s:
    1. Click the Power button.
    2. Startup choir. (Boeeiiiing!)
    3. No screen reaction. (Black screen)
    4. 30sec of wait. (Sometimes, 5min)
    5. Screen on. (White with Apple logo)
    6. Oh god Finally!
I thought this was caused by bootcamp till now, but now I think it was a simply caused by this VGA converter.
Before I push a power button, I removed this VGA converter. Then the screen immediately turn on (going white with the apple logo) with startup choir (Boeeeiiiing). Then again startup with VGA converter connected, the symptom I mentioned above starts again.
Is there any solution for a fast startup rather than disconnect the VGA converter everytime before turn on IMac?

Reset the SMC and PRAM 2-3 times back to back. Then re-start normally and test. If that does not help then try a different connection such as HDMI, it's possible the connection and/or cables are going bad to the VGA connection.

  • Fullscreen (Coverflow) works on extended desktop, but primairy goes black

When I run iTunes on my extended desktop (LCD screen via HDMI), all goes well.
However, my normal pc screen (primairy) goes black...well not entirely, my mousepointer is visible (??!!)
    Odd!
Would be nice to have coverflow in the living room and work on my pc at the same time...
    System:
    Asus p5q Intel E8400 4gb
    ATI HD 4670
    Vista Business 64
Already found al the dpi- and 16 vs 32 bit-"solutions", but those address a slightely different issue.
    Anyone?

I don't know how to solve all your issues. But I too have had the problem of Hulu not dimming my extended display while I watch on my televison.
If okay with watching through a third-party app, I recommend boxee: http://www.boxee.tv/
Does any have any other fixes for dimming a second display while watching via a web browser (life safari or firefox)? Thanks.

  • Display apps via Apple TV on MacBook Pro mfg prior to 2011

I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro with 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor running Mountain Lion 10.8.1.  It will not display my apps on my desktop via Apple TV to my TV.  Is there any fix coming for MacBook Pros older than the new one which will enable this capability?

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Is it possible to airplay my extended desktop to multiple apple tv at the same time

    Hi
I am looking to do video distribution in the venue I work in thrue multiple apple tv. The Idea is to use AirPlay and to send my extended desktop to about a dozen apple tv at the same time. is it possible to do it ???

Winston is correct you may want to consider a multiplexer its what places like bars restaruants usse when the wat several tvs to use the same imput. is cheaper then several apple tvs hers one at $132.74 i have never used it but searced google and found it would give you up to 8 tvs of one HDMI signal.

  • How to create a 'parallel' extended display through Apple TV Airplay

    Dear all,
I'm a relatively new Mac user and have not been able to find an answer to my question by looking up key words in Google or here, so apologies if this has been answered before.
Basically, I would like to know how I can project a video file or a film/TV series I am watching (for example, a video playing in VLC or a film streaming from my subscription to Amazon Prime Instant Video website, open in a browser) onto my Toshiba TV, via Apple TV airplay - whilst still being able to work on a separate window/desktop on my MacBook Air.
As a PC user slowly converting to Mac, I know how to do this on a PC by using the Windows logo key +P shortcut, choosing 'Extend' instead of 'Duplicate' and then dragging whatever video source I want to watch into the extended desktop screen being projected on my TV. I've tried doing this on the Mac by
using the multiple desktops in Mission Control (with no success, as Airplay obviously just mirrors what I'm doing on my screen onto the TV, i.e. switching from desktop to desktop as I do on the computer), or
by clicking 'Extend Desktop' instead of the automatic 'Mirror Built-in Display' on the Airplay icon on the menu bar and then dragging the browser into the extended display on the TV and hitting the 'Full screen' button of the video itself. However, as soon as I do this and click or type anything on my computer desktop, the video automatically minimizes and all I'm left with on the TV display is the browser with the initial smaller version of the film playing within it. In the 'View' tab, I've tried switching Firefox/Safari to 'Full screen' before making the video 'Full screen' too, but again, as soon as I touch anything back on my Mac desktop it minimizes. I've noticed Chrome has an 'Enter Presentation Mode' option available in the 'View' tab, which leaves the video playing full screen, but with a grey bar at the top (which is visually annoying, but still closer to what I'm looking for). Similarly, if I try to drag a video file playing in VLC, as soon as I hit the full screen button, the desktop I'm using on the Mac goes black even though I can still move the cursor on it.
I'm clearly missing a step somewhere, so any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm a prolific multitasker!

    Hi _MicMacs_,
It sounds like you've been on the right track in trying to sort out this issue. I'm a bit unclear on what you are describing when you say it works initially, but then immediately reverts when you click back on something in your primary display. You may want to try sizing the window to the display instead of using the full screen option (two opposing diagonal arrows), though this will leave the window border around the screen. For a bit more background on working with multiple displays in Mavericks, you may find the following article helpful:

  • Airplay display issues: "extend desktop" not working properly. Secondary display continues to mirror.

Whenever I turn my airplay display on and set it to "extend desktop," my secondary display (TV) continues mirroring my mac book pro (hereinafter MBP). It doesn't fully mirror my MBP, but my secondary display registers every time I switch between my desktop 1 and my full screen apps. Moreover, When I do switch to a fullscreen app on my MBP, I get a blank (blue-ish) screen on my TV.
    Any solutions!?!
Additionally, "extended desktop" for my Airplay display worked properly when Mavericks was first released.

    Try this:
Click on the Apple TV Icon on the top toolbar
Then, select "Mirror Built in Display" instead of extend desktop
In the same menu under "Match Desktop size to:" select "Apple TV" (or keep it on "built in display if that works"
This solved a similar problem for me.
