ITunes' C drive access 'times out' / Recreating iTunes on a new drive

I'm not sure exactly what to search for, so if this situation has been discussed before, I'd be grateful if someone can point me in the right direction. But I'm thinking my situation may be a unique one.
My circumstances are that I'm running a six- (or seven-, or eight-) year old Wintel box, Windows XP Home Ed., Service Pack 3. I installed iTunes several years ago on my C drive, back when a 75 Gig drive seemed enormous and unfillable. Time passes, I buy an iPod for myself, then one for my son, then iPhones for the family, and just recently an iPad. Nowadays my C drive is always at the limit of being too full (right at the 10% free-space line) and podcasts, vodcasts, digital movies and DL'd music are always pushing it back up and over that line. I've been bandaiding the problem by DLing digimovies and then immediately moving them over to a larger internal G drive purchased a few years ago, but I can't seem to stay ahead of iTunes continuing to use up space.
Complicating the problem is my long-standing preference to keep the vast majority of my mp3 music library in a separate file on the G drive, and just reference songs and CDs into iTunes as I acquire them. I prefer to leave them in their original "non-iTunes-flavored" mp3 format, and it also helps with the space issue on the C drive. This file is about 16 Gigs, and represents about 80% of my music collection, the rest being in the iTunes directory on the C drive. (I realize that under pretty much all the circumstances I can envision, I have a ton of work ahead of me "re-importing" the contents this file into any iTunes transfer or clean install I create. sigh)
My current situation is that I'm now having issues with iTunes. iPhone and iPad backups, being run through a USB 2 card which is High Speed but not Enhanced High Speed, routinely take an hour or more if I do them about once a week. Two days ago, in yet another effort to free up some space, I DLed a new digimovie and then moved the file to the G drive, something I've done several times before without incident (I just need to tell iTunes where the new location is). I also moved the contents of the "TV Shows" folder from within iTunes over to the G drive, while leaving the now-empty "TV Shows" folder in iTunes back on the C drive. Immediately after I did this, iTunes began to have problems. The backup portion of both my iPhone and my iPad syncs seemed to go ok (if I waited long enough), but when the time came for it to sync purchases made both from the external devices and also via iTunes on the main system, I keep getting a message saying something about the C drive can't be accessed, that the attempt 'timed out'. The C drive appears not to have any issues when being accessed by anything other than iTunes, although it hasn't been defragged in about eight weeks. But it's having no other access issues that I can see. The drive is actually marginally faster, now that the files have been moved and more free space has been made available.
So my questions are these: A) does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve the problem of iTunes no longer supposedly being able to access the drive it's installed on? And B) if I can't solve A), will it be simpler and/or easier to try and transfer this possibly-wonky iTunes installation to the G drive, or would it make more sense to install a fresh copy of iTunes onto the G drive, and just move the existing iTunes content folders over to the G drive from the C drive?
Thanks for reading this far. I appreciate any and all suggestions (other than to buy a new Mac; I'm already working on that!)

It's not a unique situation - happens all the time, smaller hard drives getting filled up.
It's also easy to fix. I just moved my itunes content to a bigger hard drive.
First I made a backup of the itunes database file - iTunes Library.itl. Just in case anything went wrong.
Nothing did go wrong, but I'd have it in case anything DID go wrong. That file holds ratings, playcounts, Date Added, and other metadata.
Second, in itunes change the preferences > advanced tab to tell itunes to put everything on G:
Set the itunes folder location to something like G:Media or G:iTunes
This will affect all FUTURE additions to itunes and not do anything to the existing locations.
Make sure the checkbox for "Keep itunes organized" is NOT checked. I also left the "Copy files when adding" unchecked.
Third, to move all the files to G: without itunes losing the paths, run the File > Library > Organize > Consolidate command. This will need to run a while, so be patient as it copies all the files to the new G: location. This does NOT delete the originals. You will have to do that.
Fourth, make sure everything in itunes is OK and you can play stuff in your library. If you're really cautious you can run a script to check for missing/dead tracks.

  • When connected via USB, my Ipod Classic 160GB mounts as a disc drive, then changes to a white drive.  When iTunes automatically opens, it crashes trying to mount and/ or sync.  When it times out, my only choice is to restore, but that doesn't fix problem.

I'm running OS 10.6.8 on my 3.06 GHz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo.   I recently upgraded to iTunes 10.5.2.  I'm not sure when the trouble started but I attempted a restore when the iPod would not play correctly.  It would start to play a file and get stuck on 0 seconds.  If I put the iPod on shufle, it will stall on 0 seconds for 15 seconds or so and then move on to the next track and stall again and so on.   Seemingly randomly, it will play a few tracks but eventually start skipping again.  This will continue until the battery is depleted which is fairly quick since the drive is constantly spinning.
My 160GB iPod Classic after restore attempts now is up to date with 2.0.4. and of course, nothing works as it should and I would say the skipping issue is worse than ever.
When I connect with any of three USB connectors, the iPod mounts to the desktop as a grey/silver disk drive picon exactly like the Macintosh HD picon.   Then Finder will stall for a few minutes- spinning pinwheel.  Somehow, the dock is never affected and I am able to open other applications like Safari or tab through open windows- just no action on the desktop.  Eventually, iTunes automatically opens and Finder becomes responsive again.  At this point the grey drive picon on the desktop becomes a white drive mount picon, but the iPod does not mount in iTunes, yet.  At some point, the iPod attempts to sync, iTunes crashes with the spinning pinwheel and eventually times out and I am prompted to restore the iPod again.  Once restored,  the iPod properly mounts under devices in iTunes and, as I have done this several times, even occasionally changes to the regular iPod picon on the desktop.
I have restored several times going as far a completely deleting iTunes from my iMac, downloading the latest directly from Apple.com, and attempting to restore again, but to no avail.
I have even used the disk utility to verify and/or repair my Macintosh HD and iPod.
It seems lots of folks are going through this ordeal.  Has anyone had any success in fixing the issue, even if only temporarily?

one more detail, after a restore, when I attempt to reload music to the ipod, if I try and move, say, 20 files, the transfer seems to work as it should but then stalls on the last file.  Eventually, the status will change to "Updates Files on (my ipod)" a and suggests the iPod is syncing  even though I have the auto sync feature turned off.
This process eventually works itself out, and seems to take longer relative to the number of files I attempt to transfer.   Once done, howver, if I try and eject and dismount the iPod, iTunes stalls with the spinning pinwheel and I am warned that the iPod is syncing again with the spinning candy cane status bar.     Eventually thisd works itself out and the iPod dismounts from iTunes and the desktop and eventually the iPod is free to disconnect.
Then if I try and play the music I just transfered, the iPod says there is no music loaded.

There is no problem about using one ID for iTunes, iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match, and another for iCloud and its email and syncing facilities. This way you can all use the same iTunes account but have separate emails and calendars etc.

I have the same problem with my 3rd gen Apple TV. I can preview iTunes movies, stream from my Mac, Airplay from my other devices but I cannot rent a movie on iTunes. Every time I try I get "Can't connect to ITunes" and "Unable to sign in". Had technical support review the problem over the phone and they agreed to send me a new one. Same problem. Interestingly enough my 2nd gen Apple TV works just fine.

  • Itunes update to firmware fails, because connection times out.

I have been unsuccessfully attempting to update my iphone 3gs and ipad to iOS 5 for over a month now.  I have spent many, many hours on this, and many phone calls to apple support.  I disable Norton 360, and windows firewall, and my firewall on my router.  I've tried updating my router's firmware, which bricked the router--thanks apple for insisting this was the problem, and I have replaced the router, with a new one.  Itunes diagnostics gives me the following information.  I am using itunes as the administrator in Windows 7, 64 bit, although itunes doesn't recognize it, unless I reinstall it as the administrator, but then once I restart the computer, itunes no longer recognizes that I using Windows as an admin.
Also, the firmware cannot update, because the connection times out, despite all my firewalls, and antivirus being turned off.
I've tried downloading iOS 5 and then updating using restore, but that didn't work.  I've poured through support forums, and error codes: I get 1611, etc.  Cannot seem to resolve this.
    Any ideas?

  • Daughter IPOD Touch 4th lost all music from itunes, Itunes suggested to restore to factory settings. Have done so last few days, all showing 20 hours to restore then times out and starts back to 20 hours again. Will not sync at all. HELP

IPOD TOUCH(4th gen) MUSIC DISPLAY has wiped out all my music. The music I have is all still on ITUNES but will NOT SYNC. When attempted a displayes message appeared- Cannot read contents of IPOD (my IPOD name), go to Summary tab to Restore to factory settings. When I click OK it takes me to a CLICK on RESTORE OPTION, which I did. Then it explains that I will lose all APPS, etc.. to restore. I clicked OK again and it shows my IPOD is Downloading Software Update. The only thing being it has done this for 3 days now. It starts by stating will take 20 hours, goes down to 12 or 10 and prompts OUT and when I redo the thing again it starts back up at 20 hours but continually times out. *Also, in case it matters ,the SYNC option on my IPOD in ITUNES is Highlighted as to where I cannot use that option. Everytime I start it back up I get the same message (Cannot read contents of IPOD, go to Summary Tab,etc..) Help.

  • When downloading iTunes onto a new computer, is there any way to automatically import old music files? Last time I got a new computer I didn't have to use an external drive to update my music library.

When downloading iTunes onto a new computer, is there any way to automatically important songs from your previous computer? I recently cracked the screen on my computer and cannot access any files. Last time I got a new computer my iTunes media files automatically appeared in my iTunes when I downloaded it, and I did not have to use my external drive. Is this still possible?

If your backup copy of the old computer was not stolen, then use it to put everything back.

Hard drive packed up, but had Time Machine backup. I installed new ssd and upgraded to Mountain Lion, but I can't find iPhoto library and photos or iTunes songs? Is there an answer to this?  A backup run did not install either photos or songs. Graham

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

  • ITune Store times out

I have three computers in the house, and all currently time out on connecting to the iTunes store (for the last 30 mins or so).
I have downloaded some songs earlier this afternoon, but now cannot connect.
I have reset the router and flushed the DNS but still no computer can connect?
    Any ideas
All computers running XP MCE or XP Home, with all updates installed and with latest iTunes.

Down again tonight. And, can anyone lead me on what to search for the old thread? I have done so, but unsuccesfully.
Could anyone write a simple program that one of us can use to see what times Tiscali drop the connection? It could be between certain times, and get a few of us running it?
Could it be something to do with the Tiscali FUP? I shall try and search for this A.S.A.P. I shall also be loking around ISPs soon. However, is this only a problem with Tiscali/Pipex/123-reg (owned by Pipex). Can anyone with OrangeBt Broadband/be*/etc. confirm about iTunes sore access?
Is this something I need to take up with Apple, or will I need to talk to someone at Tiscali (joy ;-)). Anyone got any tips on what to say, how to word when I ring up? Obviously Tiscali can just say that this is Apple's problem (which I am sure it isn't, as millions of iTunes users would have complained by now). Any idea for proof?

  • I have recently copied my iTunes to a new computer using the instructions from Apple site, via an external drive. My iPod will not sync on the new computer. The option to sync automatically is greyed out and it won't let me set it. How do I resolve?

I have recently installed iTunes on a new Windows 8 laptop and copied from my old XP system using an external drive. This all went ok. The problem is that i can't get my iPod classic to sync on the new laptop. I did a factory reset and re-install. It still won't sync. When I hit the 'sync' icon it does nothing. In the Options screen the option to automatically sync is greyed out and doesn't allow me to enter anything in the box. How can i resolve this?

You need iTunes on the computer. There is no iTunes for your phone. See:

  • Why do app downloads time out? iTunes 10.6.3.25

I have VZW FiOS, running iTunes 10.6.3.25 on Windows 7 and everytime I download app updates to iTunes they time out - it does not matter if there is 1 app, 3, 30, or more - I find I'm constantly clicking on dialog boxes and the "resume all" button in the downloads window. This is the only progra. Using the same connection on my iPhone they do not time out. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Okay I waited 2 weeks and in that time I had one multiple app download session where I disabled my firewall and still had the issue so I reenabled my firewall. I'm in the process of downloading a total of 48 app updates and thus far it has not kicked out the error. This is telling me that the issue was on Apple's end and it appears to be fixed. I'll give it one more multi-app download session. Thanks for the help and the suggestions.

  • I downloaded iTunes to a new computer and authorized that computer but my music is grayed out and will not play, how do I get access to my music?

I installed iTunes to a new computer and authorized that computer but my music is grayed out.  How do I get access to my music?

Is there a way to change that?
You can easily set up the iPod to automatically sync to your current iTunes library (or just do a Restore), but that will replace the iPod's existing content with content from your current iTunes library (erasing the iPod).  If your old computer was "retired" gracefully and you were able to transfer its complete iTunes user data to your new computer, there is no problem because all of the songs on the iPod now are already in your current iTunes library.  However, if there are songs on the iPod that are not in your current iTunes library, those songs will be lost.  That may be a problem...
If you want to preserve what is on the iPod, you can try setting the iPod to Manually manage music and videos.  I believe you can do that from an iTunes library that is not the iPod's currently associated library.  Select the iPod in iTunes, so that you see its Summary settings screen.  Check the box for Manually manage music and videos.  (If iTunes puts up any warning about erasing or replacing the iPod's existing content, Revert the change and cancel out.)  Click Apply.  The iPod is no longer set to automatically sync.  But you can add new content manually to what is already on the iPod.  And the songs should not be grayed out.
However, you cannot use iTunes to transfer songs on the iPod to your current iTunes library (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store).  If there are songs on the iPod that are not in your computer's iTunes library, you should eventually "offload" those song files because your iPod can easily break, become corrupted, or get lost.  iTunes syncs content in one direction only (from computer to iPod), but there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like iPod "transfer," you should get some links, including a CNET article on the topic.
Once all of your songs are "consolidated" in your current iTunes library, you can set up the iPod for automatic syncing to that library.
