ITunes cache files

my iTunes library was moved to an external hard drive in 2009 and works fine.  I have discovered that the "iTunes/album artwork/cache" files on my laptop's hard drive is taking up 31GB.  Can I delete these files??

If I don't need them then why keep them.
I delete all my movie cache files & it isn't a problem.
Why would I even need them

  • Error message - "The iTunes Library file is full could not be saved" - Help

    Hi folks.
I looked for current / recent chatter on this iss before creating this topic. Didn't see anything that addressed this issued recently. If I missed it, sorry, if not, here you go!
I got an error message last night while using iTunes. It just popped up during use, not while using. The error message read "The iTunes Library File could not be saved." Now my hard drive is DEFINITELY not full. I have hundreds of gigs of unused space. This appears to be an issue strictly related to my library.xml file. Stupidly, I clicked the don't show me this again and closed the message. My concern now is that I'll rip new content that won't end up in my iTunes library even though it's on my hard drive, thus that content will not be findable by iTunes.
I don't want to just rebuild the library from scratch as I have fixed tons of errors in how iTunes classifies my music over the years and all that work would be lost.
Any ideas on how to get past this glitch?
I noticed this problem also cropped up circa the original iPhone launch. I had that phone and did not experience this prob, and I just upgraded to the 3G four days ago. It makes no sense to me that the phone is causing this, but perhaps the upgrade to the iTunes version 7.7 (necessary to use the iPhone with my Windows computer) is the cause of the prob.
I did erase a bunch of videos and unsubscribed to several video casts. That was one recommended solution way back when.
My concern though is that since I chose the don't show me this error message again option, I won't know whether the problem persists or not.
    Oh the humanity...

I have seen this a few times, usually when other 3rd-party applications are using itunes. Such as, lastfm & the Tivo remote music player.
And, I've also seen it when I was copying a bunch of digital photos to the exHD in the background while playing music and the song changed. iTunes saves the playcount in the ITL file when the song ends.
You might check this Microsoft article about "Enable write caching on the disk". I haven't seen that iTunes error since I turned mine back on for the exHD. The Tivo "delayed write failed" errors are back, but that's a different problem...

Anyway, long story short, it gets saved OK later and I make frequent backups of that ITL file.

  • IPod photo cache file - how do I locate it?

    Hi all,
On my iPod nano I keep getting the "some of your photos were not copied because they cannot be displayed on your iPod" message, but the photo albums I am syncing do not contain the photo mentioned in the warning.
I have had a look around and noticed that one member said there is an iPod photo cache file that does not get updated. So, I want to delete that and then resync my iPod, in the hope that this warning message will not re appear. The problem is I don't know where it is located.
For the record, I have also recently restored my iPod using iTunes 7.1.1 and this still occurs.
    Thanks in advance,
    Anthony.

ok well i dont have the exact same problem...but mine still deals with photos
well i recently restored my computer, and all photos and music were deleted, but they r still in my iPod, well i learned how to get my music out, but not my photos, so do u know how to do that?
well any suggestion would b appreciated, thanks!

  • The iTunes library file cannot be saved. There is not enough memory available.

For about a week I've been getting this message when I'm listening to music in iTunes (usually in Cover Flow mode). I usually get the message after listening to music about 20+minutes. First the album artwork begins to "white out" or is replaced by a music note pic (like when there is no album artwork data available) and then if I don't shut iTunes down and restart it I will get the "The iTunes library file cannnot...." error message. If I continue to ignore it or click "do not show message again" box, iTunes will eventually stop responding and shut down.
My computer has 77GB of memory available.
    I've tried:
    - turning off home sharing
    - clearing cache
    - running virus scan
    - made sure there is no memory quota on
    Any help would be appreciated!

    PROBLEM SOLVED:
I downloaded a corrupted music file. Deleted the file...problem gone!

  • Cached Files gobbling up space

Some 6 months ago I posted an observation in this forum describing how under Windows XP, QT 7.4 was accumulating excessive disk space from files in a "downloads" folder. I asked if anyone knew the purpose of, and need for, this increasing disk space.
I assume that either no-one knew, or no-one cared, because the thread ("Files accumulating in a "downloads" folder") received no replies prior to being archived.
I recently installed QT 7.5 (and later 7.5.5) on a different computer running Vista. In some 8 weeks, during which QT has hardly been used (installed for iTunes), I now find over *_80 MB_* used by 9 files (and 37 subfolders) in QT's "downloads" folder.
    In XP, the location was...
    \Documents and Settings\(user)\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\QuickTime\downloads
In Vista, the equivalent location is...
    \Users\(user)\AppData\LocalLow\Apple Computer\QuickTime\downloads
All files have .qtch extensions, which I believe means "QuickTime Cached Files".
Am I the only one concerned that a near-idle QT seems to consume so much additional space? Does no-one know the files' reason/purpose? Or care?
    .

    Hi,
It seems this topic has not been solved yet.
I found quite a few MB's of files in my QT downloads folder as you described. It's interesting how some of the subfolders have a current date, like today's date and time, but the folder is empty.
I deleted a few of the larger files and haven't noticed any problems.
An option I used was to change the cache size allowed in QT Player.

  • The Itunes Library File Could Not Be Saved A unknown Error Occurred -1450

I keep getting this error message since I updated to this version of Itunes. Ver. 7.0.2.16. I had absolutly no problems until this update. I have removed and reinstalled twice..and I mean removed all files ccleanered the whole PC the whole she-bang, re-ripped my music, new ITL library,XML every thing, over five thousand songs.
I noticed while importing songs I would get this 1450 error if I tryed doing to many songs at once, looked like a resources issue even though the memory and processer usage was showing plenty of headroom..?? But now its popping up while just trying to play songs in ITUNES. It says its unable to save the file etc. and causes stutterring in the song but amazingly song counts etc. show up in the times played and date played columns. The ITL file also shows as having last been changed/modified at the same time the error message says it couldn't be saved...anyone know what's going on here???
Tried running with no virus checker running, no firewall etc. Ran a tweakIU routine ...a fix suggestion that I found on a google search, reset the file permissions etc.
I also get the insufficent privilages message error when trying to set ITUNES as default audio player....(I have ADMIN priv.)
I'm apparantly not the only person experiencing this, a Google search gets a lot of hits on this 1450 error message.
    HELP PLEASE
    ASUS CUSTOM   Windows XP Pro

Well I believe I may have found the solution to the -1450 error at least for my situation.
While pouring over settings I noticed ITUNES runs in a protected memory space. Well this along with the symptoms displayed (being unable to update the library file if a large number or files are changed/edited added etc.) led me to examine my virtual memory settings under the Windows/control panel/performance/advanced/Memory usage tab and I noticed that for some reason memory usage was selected as optimized for "System cache" VS "programs". I changed this to programs and also while in the same area disabled the EP "execution prevention" feature of the INTEL processor.
I can now import change/files listen to music etc. without this -1450 error presenting itself.
I'm not sure which of the two steps solved the problem but I suspect the Memory optimization being set for "system cache" was the problem.
While I never had any problems running other apps.(I do have a lot of memory)I think ITUNES was having a problem with this setting when writing to and from temp files and the ITUNES.ITL file.
I have no idea how or when or why this setting was as it was as all my other PC's are set for program performance optimization.
Hope some one finds this helpful.

  • ITunes shortens file names. Is it possible to keep the complete file names?

Hello community, this is my first entry. Please consider this, if my expressions aren't clear enough. Would be great to find a solution. I use an external USB 3.0 hard drive formatted as HFS+ (under Windows 8 I use MacDrive Pro to have full read/write access) on my MacBook Pro Retina, which hold all my music files. As long as I import and manage my iTune media files under the Mac OS X version of iTunes everything is fine. But when I boot Windows 8 under Bootcamp - I need this native Window environment for my job - and import regular Audio CDs into iTunes for Windows it cuts all my file names of new imported files. The tags are complete, but the file names aren't. Is there a way to change this behaviour of iTunes for Windows? Perhaps a registry entry or something like this. I look forward for your help. Best

    Note from other posts:
The content and format of the cache will and do change from version to version of javaws. It is highly unadvisable to build into you application relying on the location or format.
That being said, for 1.4.2 or 1.5.0, the location was as given: "C:\Documents and Settings\<UserID>\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javaws", and in long path below that depending on the URL of the resource.
For version 6, the cache is in : "C:\Documents and Settings\<UserID>\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0" and then in a directory below that named "0" thry "63", depending on the hash of the URL of the resource. The name will be completely obscure, there will be one binary index file with "idx" extension, and then the actual resource will be the file of the same name w/o any extension.

  • Where does the Mail cache file reside?

My email inbox suddenly doesn't show anything newer than April 2011. The last time this happened, Apple Care walked me through deleting an AOL or Mail cache file, but I can't find it now. Where does the archived mail cache hide?

If you have iTunes set to consolidate your Library, then yes, you have 3 copies of the movie, USB, ITunes library folder, and iPad.
If not, then iTunes merely adds a pointer to the current location of the file, and then copies it over to the iPad.
If the USB is removed, the movie is still technically part of the library, but will not be accessible, it will show up grayed out and not be playable.

  • ITunes U files from MIT

iTunes U files from MIT that I dl to MacBook Pro do not show up in iTunes library.
There is a "!" next to some of the files that tells me "The file might be corrupted, or a file type that iTunes cannot play."
The course specifically is Physics 1: Classical Mechanics. Two of the lectures are there in my library: Lecture 15 and Lecture 35. Lectures 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 26 all have the "!". The rest still have the "GET" link to dl again. Anyone else have this problem?
    -Jeff

I have the same problem with all MIT OCW courses I tried. The audios are fine, videos give me the error "There was a problem adding ... to iTunes. The file might be corrupted or a file type that iTunes cannot play."
Interesting, when I try to play the file from the temp cache, e.g.
    /Users/<username>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Downloads/iTunes U/Lecture 01_ Introduction _ Introductory Biology.tmp/download.mp4
it plays fine in QuickTime but cannot be imported into iTunes

  • I have two different itunes music files on my computer.  How do I combine them into one file?

I have two different itunes music files on my computer.  How do I combine them into one file?

I don't think so. The only other ID I have is a developer id, and I didn't get that until several months after I got the phone. In addition purchases I made from the App Store onthe phone would sync up with It unes on the Mac meaning it would be the same id.
However I looked at the AppStore on my phone while it was connected to the Mac with iTunes open, and now the balance has changed to the same as the others.

  • I have multiple libraries on an external drive. Somehow all the iTunes library files i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, Media folder, etc disappeared! Only the music files remain. Now when I start iTunes w/option it can't find any of the old libraries!

Help! I 'm using an old G4 powerbook, Mac OSX 10.5.8, iTunes ver 10. I have multiple iTunes libraries on an external drive. Everything was fine for a while, then all of the iTunes library files, i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, artwork folder, Media folder, etc mysteriously disappeared! Only the music files remain (thank god) So now when I start iTunes w/option key to choose a library, I can't choose any of them because iTunes won't recognize them. Because all the library stuff is missing. So can I re-create the library files? (I don't care if I lose my ratings)
Or should I create a new empty library on the external drive, then manually move all the music files to the Media folder in the new library?
I tried some stupid ideas like creating a new library just to start iTunes, then going into prefs and advanced, then under iTunes Media folder location, selecting the location of the old library on the external, to see if iTunes would then find all the music which is still there, but no workee.
I'm out of ideas, and I searched the archives.
    Help! anyone?
    Scott

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

  • CS2: Adobe Bridge Cache File on Desktop...Why?

For some unknown reason...CS2 has started placing "Adobe Bridge Cache" file shortcuts on my desktop. When I click on one, I receive a Win XP error message that says the file .bc is unkown and can't be opened.
These shortcuts have never appeared before. Now the simple act of opening Bridge and looking at jpeg files seems to initiate it.
Questions: Why is PS doing this? Do I need to pay attention to it? If not, how do I stop PS from cluttering up my desktop.
    Thanks!
    Ed

    Ed,
Yes you can. The cache facilitates the quick display of images in a folder.
When there's no cache, Bridge has to render thumbnails from every image file upon viewing a folder's contents. This can take a couple of minutes.
    Rob
    P.S.
    >I do, indeed, have image files in a folder on my desktop.
This would mean that there is a cache inside that folder, *not* on the desktop itself.

  • Syncing iPhone to new iTunes w/o iTunes library file

My MBP's hard drive died and I got it replaced, so it's good as new - everything was clean, iTunes was empty, etc. I'm filling up the computer again, and I realised that I backed up all my music (the mp3 files/iTunes media folder), but I stupidly forgot to back up the iTunes library file.
So I have my iTunes filled with songs but no play count, playlists etc. All the playlists and information, however, still exist in my iPhone 4, which I haven't synced to my new laptop yet.
I'm preeetty sure because of my ****-up with not saving the library file, there's no way, but I still have to ask: is there any way to sync the song data and playlists from the iPhone back into iTunes? It's not the end of the world if I can't, but I built up all the playcounts, playlists, mixtapes over the past few years and I'm a little sad to lose them.

" This iphone already has content on it but I want to add songs from my old computer."
You cannot do this.  You can have content from one and only one computer at a time on the iphone.
Have you tried restoring the iphone?
