Itunes cache?
I have an a issue with itunes naming my cd's, on insert, with an old artist's names I recorded years ago and now know I have nothing left of his files that I can see. It seems to only be cd's loaded on this computer and not my others in the house. I am wondering if there is a cache I can clear that will stop this from mounting the wrong name with the cd inserted. I know it sounds ridiculous but it is annoying to see the wrong name even after I have burned and ripped with text info and it still comes up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Gabriel
The cache of past CDs is held in a file called CDInfo.cidb. It is with the application, not with the library. You can use Finder to locate it.
You are correct; it is local to the one computer that read that CD before, and does not care whether the files you ripped are still present or not.

Error 13, 14, 35 and 50 (or -50)
These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
1. Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
2. Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
3. Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
4. Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
5. There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
6. Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
7. Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.

Why does the iTunes cache become so big?
My computer keeps on running out of space on the hard disc. I finally figured out that it is from the iTunes cache folder being more than 200gbs! Why??? I deleted it and got everything working again. Just out of curiousity I checked again a couple days later and it was already at more than 50gbs. I run all of my movies and tv shows off of iCloud so that I don't run out of room. Is there a way I can fix this from constantly happening.

How do I empty iTunes cache.. what is a .plist?
Hi, I am using iTunes v7, I have updated my cover-flow and now I keep getting the spinning beach ball, fairly regularly... about every two minutes, and it will spin for a minute or so before coming back...
I have read in the forums that emptying the cache and deleting .apple.itunes.plist... how do I go about both tasks? What is a .plist?
Can anyone help me .... its driving me bananas
Thanks in advance....Thanks again Meg... the G4 is pretty old now (10 years-ish) but it is a bit of a monster... 2x 500 gig + 128gig HD for Apps and OS only... 2 gig RAM (I know the bus speed is quite slow) Dual 1.2 Ghz CPU's
OS 10.4.11 Radreon 9800 pro graphics.... etc, It only started the spinning ball thing since I updated the album art/ coverflow.... all was fine before then.... I did try a couple of third party apps that were useless and I trashed them... getcoverart... findart.. that sort of thing.
I will try dumping the .plist and do a reboot and see what happens... I will be back.
Thanks again for helping me Meg, I am terrified of losing my library (35 gig) like I have in the past.
Its taken literally years to accumulate.... blooming ball is driving me to distraction tho... itunes just hangs... music keeps playing tho... ??? -
my iTunes library was moved to an external hard drive in 2009 and works fine. I have discovered that the "iTunes/album artwork/cache" files on my laptop's hard drive is taking up 31GB. Can I delete these files??
If I don't need them then why keep them.
I delete all my movie cache files & it isn't a problem.
Why would I even need them -
Could iTunes "cache" be part of the problem?
Not sure if this means anything, but even when I reboot and relaunch iTunes it comes right back to the exact activation screen I left it (a dead end) and when I choose "start over" many of my fields are already filled in with what I had previously typed... I really want to START FRESH, since I am having trouble with my Pre-approved credit code.
Any ideas on how to "clear" the iTunes activation memory? is it in iTunes? the iPhone?
I have powered down and rebooted several times, it always "remembers" my old info and spot in the activation (a dead end). Any suggestions to make sure I am really starting over FRESH?
(my theory is that I have some "bad" or weird info stuck in the system, and even though I choose Start Over, it still "remembers" the bad stuff...)
Is it possible to clear this out? Or does it not make any difference? If I do that, will I lose my playlist information???
UPDATE- tried it, itunes still "remembered" where I was in the activation, so maybe it's in the iPhone? Have no idea how to clear that out. I already did a "reset" of the iPhone. -
Hello, I need some help please regarding itunes cache of artwork.
I have a 500GB collection of music stored on an external harddrive, so I'm not worried about that.
It's the artwork caches stored on my macbook air that seem to be taking up a large part of the space on my laptop.
There are 3 separate files of 6.9 gb, 6.5 gb and 2.8 GB. I can't need all of them, surely.
I would like to free up a load of space on my macbook.
Can I move these files to my external harddrive, or do I have to do something else.
Any advice is gratefully recieved.
Thank you.The download folder holds images that have been downloaded from the iTunes store and associated with various files on your computer. Depending on how you embedded the images into your MP3's these might be in addition or you may be mistake in your belief that all your files have embedded images. If you delete the download folder any files whose image comes solely from the download folder will lose its artwork, however this can always be reacquired.
The cache folder is just that, a cache. If you delete this folder iTunes will rebuild it as and when necessary as it tries to display art for your various albums.
Very occasionaly these caches may become corrupt and removing them is the way to rebuild them. I've no idea how efficent iTunes is at garbage collection, so it is also possible that over time there could be redundant information held therein. Again, deleting the folders would result in them being rebuilt from scratch but if you are concerned they might be taking up too much room you can always delete and see what happens. How big is your media folder? Size and quality will have a bearing on how much memory the cache requires but I get an overhead of about 0.5% for my artwork folder, so a 500mb artwork cache would suggest your library is around 100Gb.

Back up all data.
Quit iTunes if it’s running.
Step 1
Hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Move the following items from the Library folder to the Trash, if they exist:
Caches/com.apple.iTunes
Caches/QCCompositionRepository-com.apple.iTunes.cache
Saved Application State/com.apple.iTunes.savedState
Leave the Library folder open. Try iTunes again. If it works now, stop here. Close the Library folder.
Step 2
If you still have problems, quit iTunes again. Go back to the Finder and move the following item from the open Library folder to the Desktop:
iTunes
Note: you are not moving the iTunes application. You’re moving a folder named “iTunes.”
Test. If iTunes now works, delete the iTunes folder on the Desktop. Otherwise, quit iTunes again. Put back the folder you moved, overwriting the newer one that may have been created in its place, and continue.
Step 3
In the Preferences subfolder, there may be several files having names that begin with either of the following strings:
com.apple.iTunes
com.apple.mobile.iTunes
Move them all to the Desktop.
Also in the Preferences folder, there's a subfolder named "ByHost". Open it and do the same thing.
Test again. This time iTunes should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. You may be able to put back some of the files you moved to the Desktop in this step. Relaunch and test after each one. Eventually you should find one or more that causes iTunes to malfunction. Delete those files and recreate whatever settings they contained.
If the issue is still not resolved, quit iTunes again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were. You don’t need to replace the items you moved to the Trash. Stop here and post again.
If you later decide that you don’t like the results of steps 2 and 3, you can undo them completely by quitting iTunes and restoring the items you deleted in those steps from your backup. -
Syncing my iPhone immediately crashes iTunes in Leopard
I installed Leopard last weekend, and before that I never had any problems syncing my iPhone. But now that I've installed it, whenever I connect my iPhone to its dock, iTunes gives me the spinning beach ball until I force quit out of it. It doesn't show up on the sources list or anything.
The weird thing is, when I first ran into this problem I tried syncing my iPhone many, many times, and some times it would start syncing successfully, but it would hang as it was transferring files, never finishing entirely. But for the vast majority of my attempts at syncing it crashes immediately.
Things I've tried so far:
1) Repaired permissions / repaired disk using Disk Utility. No result.
2) Deleted the iTunes cache files (~/Libary/Caches/iTunes and /User/Caches/iTunes). This fixed a similar syncing issue in another discussion. After restarting, my iPhone synced successfully! But then the next time I tried syncying, after another restart, iTunes went back to its old behavior and crashed. The cache folders are still gone so I don't know why that only worked once.
Really hoping that someone can help me out here as I'm dying to listen to some new music in the car Thanks in advance.I didn't think I would have an effect, so I didn't try it initially, but reinstalling iTunes has solved the issue! Case closed.

In the last few weeks I have been experiencing multiple issues with my iTunes.
I believe it began when my itunes library corrupted and I had to start again.
By starting again I mean I went to previous itunes libraries and used the most recent backup.
After I noticed a large number of unknown error (-50) messages I thought I better copy the backup I was using from the previous libraries folder over to the itunes folder (in case the error related to failed attempts to back up the library).
This problem in itself wasn't too bad as I am able to close and relaunch iTunes and carry on however I have noticed some less desirable side effects - the loss of home sharing. I am unable to pick speakers to broadcast to (I have 2 airport express units plugged in and working and an Apple TV2) and I am unable to access the iTunes library on Apple TV.
I've done some basic troubleshooting: creating rules to allow the home sharing ports, temporarily disabling antivirus/firewall, uninstalling antivirus/firewall, setting up rules on the router for homesharing ports, uninstalling iTunes, rebooting, reinstalling iTunes and retrying, disabling home sharing and reenabling, disabling peerblock, deauthorising itunes and reauthorising and rebooting both the pc and Apple TV, checking sharing settings under preferences and verifying both the entire library is shared and that the status of home sharing is on but no devices connected, created a new library and reimporting my media and the problem still exists.
I noticed that occasionally when I switch between libraries, deauthorise and reauthorise I do get access to home sharing and Apple Tv gets full access to the library BUT iTunes quickly becomes unresponsive and when I close and relaunch Apple TV can no longer see my library or iTunes.
I have checked the network I am running on is marked as a home network, I have tried connecting the Apple TV via LAN instead of WiFi but this makes no difference. What I do find interesting is that I have iTunes running on another pc and on a virtual machine and as soon as I run either their libraries appear on Apple TV so there must be something about the installation on my pc and nothing wrong with the Apple TV, airport express, router etc.
With that in mind I retried an uninstall and this time deleted as many tmp files as I could see in the iTunes library folder, rebooted and reinstalled. I also checked the permission levels on the iTunes application folder and the iTunes library folder (located on an additional internal drive), I then tried running iTunes as an administrator (which my user account is already set as) but all the problems are still evident.
The determining gapless playback has no effect on how I use iTunes but it clearly does not need to run for every single recently added track any time I make a minute change to other library entries. I tried looking up one of the files it was determining gapless playback for but it wasn't corrupt or read only so I don't see why it needs to retry continually.
I'm running Windows 7 64bit with all latest updates installed and iTunes 64bit 10.6.3.25, all apple devices are running the latest version of firmware and I'm running out of ideas. I did try running CCleaner to clear up and registry issues if there were any and I ran Appcleaner to remove any iTunes cache that may have been left between installs. I'm running out of ideas - what am I missing here?I have found the problem was in part caused by Windows firewall.
Exactly how Windows firewall can cause the problem when I wasn't even using it I don't know.
What I do know is that when I checked 'allow a program through the firewall' I found 4 rules set for iTunes, one of which was public network access.
I deleted the superfluous rules and the Home Sharing problems are solved.
All that needs sorting now is the 'determining gapless playback'. -
ITunes Radio not working properly after signing up for iTunes Match
I've been a user of iTunes Radio for some time now, and I've enjoyed it with minimal technical issues - until I signed up for iTunes Match. I'm not sure if it's simply coincidence, or if my subscription is causing issues.
The problem is that when I click on a station, whether it be a Featured Station or one of My Stations, it acts like it will play, but the time bar never comes up below the song title. Instead of showing the status bar when a song is playing, indicating the time lapsed/remaining, it shows a solid blue bar all the way across with no time.
I use Radio on my MacBook Pro (2009) and I also AirPlay my music to two Bose SoundTouch 20 speaker systems. I'm on the latest version of iTunes, my Bose systems are updated with the latest software, and I've never had an issue with this before. I can play songs I own or ones that I want to preview in the iTunes Store just fine through all of my speaker systems. What's interesting is that my NPR station in Radio works fine, though that one doesn't allow for AirPlay.
I'm also having identical issues from my iPhone 5s. Though I can only play to one AirPlay device at a time from my iPhone, the symptoms are otherwise the same. Downloaded songs play fine; iTunes Radio freaks out and gives the "Station Temporarily Unavailable" message. Except it's not temporary, unless you consider two months of this irritation temporary...
Here's what I've tried so far:
Logging out of iTunes, restarting and logging back in.
Resetting my Bose AirPlay speakers.
Turning off the Bose SoundTouch App and Music Server App on my computer.
Disconnecting my Bose AirPlay speakers from power altogether.
Restarting computer and resetting iTunes Cache and Warnings.
None of those attempts at fixing this issue has resolved anything. I'm at a bit of a loss for help here, and I really don't want to start uninstalling and reinstalling programs if it can be avoided. If there's a way to unsubscribe from iTunes Match, I'd want to try that first as that seemed to be when things started becoming non-responsive. If Apple provides a way to fix iTunes or the iTunes Match service without charging me a $29 support fee, I think that would be great, but I haven't seen one.
Anyone encounter this before? Anyone at Apple listening? I'd greatly appreciate any help.Try it in Cellular as a quick test. Mi had lots of troubles and isolated the issue to Cox communications. May be an ISP issue.

Is there really no way to get a refund for iTunes match?
Apple does not any support for iTunes Match and has not been able to make it work.
Why then, does Apple not issue a refund for a defective product?
Macbook Pro 2.7 with 8GB ram, 10.7.3 with iTunes 10.6.1
I have created a new music library, created a new user and then imported some my music and even did a fresh install of 10.7.3 and iTunes on another computer and tried that with part of my music. Same thing.
All fail and after numerous restarts, finally hangs on step 3. I have worked on this for days, letting it run for hours, like now 0 out of 888 items uploaded.
Support calls have no troubleshooting steps to suggest. The put me on hold and finally hang up. Case # 305222983
I have seen absolutly no troubleshooting suggestions here in Apple's support communities.
After all these years with Apple, this is the most misrable mess I have ever seen.As I said earlier, "Support calls have no troubleshooting steps to suggest. The put me on hold and finally hang up. Case # 305222983"
"All fail and after numerous restarts, finally hangs on step 3. I have worked on this for days, letting it run for hours, like now 0 out of 888 items uploaded." I'm sorry if this description of the problem isn't clear enough and requires "mind reading" to understand.
I tried calling support several times and was on hold for most of the time.
Thank you for directing me to the discussion suggesting clearing the iTunes cache. That is a great and simple solution and seems like a great first step in troubleshooting the issue. (I wish it would work for me) I have also tried reinstalling iTunes. (As well as creating a new music library and creating a new user and importing music from the "public folder".)
Apple seems to have realized the problem and are now offering refunds. iTunes match seems like a great idea. I hope they are able to get it working eventually. -

Okay I have an Apple PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.3.9 Panther (purchased late Nov 2003 was originally running 10.2.8 Jaguar) and up till a few days ago everything was running smoothly. That is until after I upgraded to QuickTime 7.1.2 and installed iTunes 6.0.5 when the problem started. Somehow my login.keychain for Safari got corrupted and I tried deleting original and making a new one.
Here's what has happened since then:
Any free media I have downloaded like videos or music off free sites (without Digital Rights Management) already still work. However, if I try downloading new stuff the new files don't work.
Since day before yesterday 4 times when I open iTunes it tells me my Library has been damaged. All my music files are still on my hard drive and are still playable but my iTunes Library file is corrupted -- how and why I don't know.
No music appears in my Library nor do any of my videos in .m4v format (iPod format) show up in my Library since then. I trash damaged file and re-import or select add to library and re-add all the media to my Library seems to work fine. I play them and most of them are playable. Even when Library works a few that played earlier have a skipping problem.
In Safari all my bookmarks got deleted -- I had to back, find the websites and re-add them -- fortunately when I closed Safari and re-launched the browser they remained saved the next time I closed and re-started the browser. However, third time (normally when something doesn't work twice they say third time's the charm) well the third time I opened Safari everything got deleted again.
My iTunes Library is acting erratically -- files I download don't work although files I already have are still playable usually except when my programs run across errors that didn't exist earlier.
I have Microsoft Office X 10.1.6 with the PowerPoint X and Excel X Security Updates, the Apple Security Updates 2006-002, 2006-003 and QuickTime 7.1.2 and iTunes 6.0.5.
When I originally downloaded and installed Security Update 2006-001 my Safari completely broke and would stop running and my Dock Menu dissappeared until restart but even then Safari stopped working. Could find no other solution than reinstalling OS X to return my Mac to pre Security Update 2006-001 levels. Not even Disk Utility solved the problem.
iTunes 6.0.2 also caused problems for me (I heard it caused problems on Windows also) the problem on my Mac was Disk Utility stopped working altogether. Fortunately, by deleting the game Chess from my Mac it fixed the problem. Today, I have Chess back on my computer because since my last OS reinstall I just updated my iTunes to 6.0.3 (I think) I now have iTunes 6.0.5 and have had no problems with Chess and iTunes or iTunes and another application like Chess preventing Disk Utility from working -- but now this problem I am describing where my Library erases itself regularly -- sometimes I restart iTunes and the new user wizard shows up and asks if I want iTunes to find my media and automatically add it to my Library when it does I say yes and it re-adds everything but somehow I have 2 files for every song on my computer and it re-imports (or imports) all my music, videos and podcasts back into my Library once and then re-imporitng it again
This time Safari is working but bookmarks are being erased and re-erased, iTunes is acting all screwy, files I download don't work when they should, I tried deleting and re-downloading a video I had saved on my hard drive (that I downloaded earlier) and the exact same file (no changes had been made to the file when it was re-uploaded) had errors playing when the download completed.
Fortunately, I had burned the video to a CD so I can re-copy it to my Mac and when I play it off the CD on my Mac or copy directly to Mac and play it works just fine.
Since downloading these updates cannot download anything anymore without errors when playing them.
If I downloaded same files earlier though they would have worked.
Only as a last resort would I do a clean reinstall of OS X -- thing is it would take a lot of work just to reinstall OS X, copy all my files I have backed up back to my hard drive, re-importing my music and artwork, re-installing Microsoft Office X and its updates, reinstalling some (but not all the latest ones if neccessary) of Apple's Security Updates, reupdating to Mac OS 10.3.9 to reinstall QuickTime 7.
I had like 283 files in my iTunes Library, including all my music, videos, podcasts etc.
Imagine how long it would take to get them all back in there; and I re-did it last night until it got erased again. Don't want to re-do it unless next time it stays permanently.
Just a note I also have Virex 7 on my Mac -- and it used to be a startup item but somehow it got disabled from starting up.
Also, I do have VLC Media Player but even that has been having problems with playing newly downloaded media files since I updated my QuickTime.
So the problem now is with my iTunes Library erasing itself continuously and even when its working sometimes refusing to play an entire track (it starts playing a song and then skips to the next one) I've checked my preferences and cross shading or whatever its called is unselected but sound checker is on.
Also the problem involves my Safari erasing bookmarks on its own as described above. Please help anyway you can!
As a last resort will do a clean reinstall, re-copy all my files back to my hard drive, reinstall my programs, re-update my Mac carefully etc. Thanks for the help. I will take your advice and try running Disk Utility again. I have noticed sometimes when running Safari after quitting the application my defaults get changed -- that is my preferences go away. I have popup blocking and tabbed browing normally enabled by default it used to be if I enabled them as long as I didn't manually disable them that they would stay the same even after I quit and relaunch the browser, but now they get disabled when I quit and have to manually re-enable them again.
Also as noted bookmarks get deleted. Since the time I posted this thread I had at one time done a clean reinstall of OS X -- did it about 1-2 weeks ago. Not sure if videos I download on my Mac still have same problem but noticed if I download same videos on a PC that I used to download and play directly on my Mac that I could burn them to a CD or put them on a flash drive and transfer the file to Mac without any problems but downloading directly on Mac and then playing causes difficulty.
However, the same issue with Safari and iTunes has still been lingering for a while. I already have Mac OS 10.3.9 Combined Update installed should I try re-installing again? That would require me to reinstall OS X again and then update to 10.3.9. Or simply re-download and re-install 10.3.9 if possible over existing configuration so installing 10.3.9 over 10.3.9?
3 times out of 5 iTunes Music Library becomes damaged -- a few times I have tried since then deleting files in iTunes cache -- shouldn't become too big anyways -- otherwise it could become slow or something (good reason for cleaning Safari cache sometimes also) of course I wouldn't clean out the entire cache unless I had to or I thought that would fix the problem etc -- unless maybe it would even do a lot of good for resolving the problem.
I even tried trashing the damaged iTunes Library and the iTunes Music Library.xml file when the Library wasn't working.
If the problem re-occurs should I trash the iTunes preferences file(s) like iTunes.plist etc would help?
