ITunes can't communicate with iPod bec it's locked by another user

I'm getting this message when I connect my iPod to my computer:
"Another user on this computer is using the ipod software so iTunes is unable to communicate with this ipod. please ask the other user to log out."
I suspect at some point the Windows dialog for "what to do when this device is attached" came up and I hit ok, not realizing it. Every time I attach the iPod, it opens a Windows Explorer window showing me the files inside (Calendar, Notes, etc), and then iTunes gives me hte message above.
I don't know how to tell Windows to butt out. I'm running Windows XP. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It was my friend Gail who was having problems. I finally went over to her house to check it out this morning, and found out she was logged on to her machine twice, once as herself and once under her guest account. She logged on to the guest account to check something or other out, and didn't realize there was a difference between "switch users" and logging off of one account and on to another. :-P
So the answer to your question is "Yes". Thanks for your time. I think we can count this issue as resolved.

  • ITunes can't communicate with iPod - AGAIN

I got the pop up this morning "iTunes maybe unable to communicate with iPod". So I followed the instructions from the link. And reboot my PC. I relaunched iTunes and still got the pop up saying it maybe unable to communicate.
Does anyone know what is causing this, and have a work around? Or is there a decent 3rd party software that will do the work of iTunes?

  • ITunes can't work with iPod without entering passcode

I'm trying to get my new iTunes on my new laptop hooked up to my old iTouch. When I plug it in a window pops up on iTunes that says that iTunes can't connect to my iPod because it's locked with a passcode and I need to type in my passcode before it can be used with iTunes. This iPod isn't synched to this iTunes and I don't want to sync it quite yet. If I type in my passcode will it sync this iPod to my new iTunes? Will I lose all my music off my iPod?

Problem solved. The harddisk was formatted and Windows and iTunes re-installed. Hopefully this problem won't appear very soon.

  • Itunes can't read my ipod because it's locked.

my ipod must be restored each time the battery runs out. Now it has a lock code and itunes can't read it. I have to enter the code in the ipod but it doesn't work. What I should do?

Connect the device to your iTunes library in recovery mode using the instructions in the Apple support document below and restore it to factory settings.

  • Can't communicate with iPod

Am unable to add or amend items in new iPod. On attempting to upload a track I get a message saying required field cannot be found. On attempting to restore iPod message appears indicating 'unknown error 1415'. have latest versions of software.

Here is an article from the apple support website that will help.

Make sure the ipod is connected directly to the computer and not through a hub or keyboard connection.

  • Software not installed correctly to communicate with ipod/iphone. This message appears when itunes is opened

software not installed correctly to communicate with ipod/iphone. please install again

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • I accepted a recent update for iTunes and now my version of Spin Doctor can't communicate with it any more. I don't think I can upgrade the Spin Doctor without buying a new program.  Is there a way to undo the last iTunes update?

I accepted a recent update for iTunes and now my version of Spin Doctor can't communicate with iTunes, specifically, I can't get music files to go over to iTunes.  Spin Doctor gives me a message indicating that iTunes isn't working properly.
I am using iTunes 9.1.1(12) and Spin Doctor 3.1.1.304t.  I have investigated upgrading the Spin Doctor but I think too much time has passed and the version available are too far advanced.
Any ideas?  Can I undo the iTunes upgrade?  Is there a website that I can go to to get the upgrade for my Spin Doctor?
    Thanks.
    Mary

If your iMac is an Intel CPU model, you can upgrade the OS to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Then use software update to update 10.6 Snow Leopard to OS X 10,6.8.
Then you can run the latest iTunes to sync your iPad running iOS 6
You can purchase OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard by calling Apple at 1-800-MYAPPLE. Ask for retail software sales and purchase a copy of 10.6 for $19.99 plus shipping.

  • ITunes cant communicate with iPod Mini

Recently I plugged my iPod mini into my computer to update the songs, only to have my iPod freeze up. After a while it worked again and all my songs were gone from my iPod. When I plugged it back into my computer and opened iTunes to load all the songs back on, iTunes froze and wouldnt work, when I unplugged my iPod a message would pop up saying something like "the software needed for iTunes to communicate with IPod is missing, please reinstall iTunes" after reinstalling both iTunes and the iPod software, I still have this problem.

    So...
You have updated to iTUNES 5.0 and iPOD Mini version 1.4?
Some reports are up around the web about people having iPOD update problems after installing iTUNES 5.0.
Apparently, Apple will be issuing an update next week to fix the problem.
My iPOD updates fine, but I am getting a pop at the beginning of each song when I play iTUNES through my stereo using my Airport Express with Airtunes.
Never had a popping problem with the previous version.

I went about 20 minutes into the recovery process and got the error message, iTunes could not connect to iPod because it is locked with a passcode you must enter your passcode on iPod before it can be used with iTunes. The whole problem started with my son putting in a password that he has now forgotten. How do I get passed this?

  • Software necessary to communicate with Ipod not properly installed

    Hi,
I updated my Itunes software and have been having problems ever since. Every time I connect my Ipod I get the message: "Software necessary to communicate with Ipod not properly installed. Reinstall Itunes..." After I click Ok it goes to Itunes but it does not recognized the Ipod. Now I have reinstalled several times and even downgraded to a previous Itunes version but keep getting the same error. Even though I don't know if this has anything to do with it, yesterday I noticed that I cannot watch any YouTube videos either, i get the error: "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player" Any help would be highly appreciated!

A lot of users are getting this. See 'can not open iTunes' obove this in the forum

  • Compter says it can't communicate with Mini

This mini has been able to connect and download music. I removed several virus programs and now the computer says that it the software that itunes needs to communicate with the mini is intstalled wrong. I removed itunes, reinstalled...same problem. I simply want to connect between the mini and my PC to update files.

Yes I have Xp and you are correct that logging other users off is essential always when using this software. However, even being the only user logged on the message remains "unable to communicate with ipod itunes software incorrectly installed.
Hopefully someone from APPle actually reads these and can provide a definitive answer
    Thanks for yours too.
