ITunes cannot connect to the iTunes store unknown error (-9808)

Whenever I try to make a purchase on iTunes the above message comes up. Does anyone have any idea what it means and how I can fix it? Any help would be great, thanks

The top 3 fixes to itunes error 9808 seem to be
1) Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced, make sure that SSL 3.0 is checked and TLS 1.0 is checked. Also under Security make sure that the “Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)” is unchecked. Then click ok and fire up iTunes.
2) The culprit was Norton. The users are set up as Admin and Standard. I have Parental Controls turned on in both Vista as well as Norton. Admin users had no problems connecting to iTunes. Standard users would get the error. I had to go to Norton’s Personal Firewall and add the program “iTunes Helper.exe” and set the option to “Allowed” (”iTunes.exe should already be in the Allowed category.) in order for the standard users to be able to connect.
3) close iTunes if you have it open right now. Then go to C:/Documents and Settings/username/Local Settings/Application Data/Apple Computer/iTunes. Delete or cut the preferences.xml file which contains your iTunes preferences. Then go to C:/Documents and Settings/username/Application Data/Apple Computer/iTunes and delete or move the preferences.xml file. For Mac users, there is only one file you must delete or move a to a new location and is located at User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.itunes.plist. Restart iTunes and it will recreate those two (or one) files with the default settings. Feel free to set your preferences back to what they were and then connect to the iTunes store and enjoy!
Norton is the main culprit for iTS not working after an itunes upgrade, so try #2 first.

Did you try restarting it by holding down the hold and lock button at the same time until you get the apple logo?  If you already tried that then you should try putting it in DFU mode and doing a restore by following these instructions- http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034

Any suggestions? I replaced the battery hoping that would do the trick, but nada.

Did you try a different charger and a different cable? If it won't charge the error will go away soon also when the battery dies.

I guess this ends my relationship with the itunes store. Cannot connect despite following the boards recommended fixes, certificate changes, clock changes.
anyone else having issues connecting to the itunes store?

SO we rule out Winsock provider issue.
Can you try these entries in command prompt (Run as Administrator for Win7/Vista) one at a time?
    ipconfig /release
    then
    ipconfig /renew
    restart computer
    ipconfig /flushdns
totally shut down computer then restart.
    netsh winsock reset all
    restart computer
Now test your iTunes again. If that does not work, uninstall your Antivirus program and test again.

Okay, so I've tried this, and it didn't work:
    1.C drive/user folder/your username/app data/local/applecomputer folder/(delete cache file here)/then enter itunes folder/(delete itunesprefs here).
    2. C drive/user folder/your username/appdata/roaming/applecomputer/itunes folder(delete itunesprefs here).
I then clicked Ituneson my desktop, accepted the agreements, let it auto configure, said yes to auto arrange folders, all my music was still there. Clicked itunes store and VIOLA!
*BUT THEN I FOUND THIS, AND IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!*
*None of these solutions works for me. Not sure how many others have the issue I've been having with Win7, but I found that you could fix the connectivity problem like this:*
*Control Panel/Internet Options/Advanced Tab, click "Reset Internet Explorer Settings"*
*When that's done, start iTunes. This seems to be a recurring problem when I switch between networks and VPNs between work and home. Since I can't seem to solve it, I switched to Firefox, but iTunes is sensitive to the IE problem.*
    *THANK YOU solidifier !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*

  • WiFi-itunes "Cannot connect to the itunes store".

When trying to connect to itunes I get the message I don't have Wi-Fi but I show in settings that I do have Wi-Fi. Problem is I show I have Wi-Fi in settings but have the edge showing and no Wi-Fi bars?

Thanks, but my phone shows a checkmark next to a Wi-Fi that is active and available but I don't show the WI-fi fan symbol that it is connected. I have taken the phone to different W-Fi areas that show I am connected but and still the same problem. If I go into settings, then Wi-Fi I show a Wi-Fi network, then click on netweork and show the IP address and Subnet Mask information so, I assume I am connected to this network? I was wondering if there was a software problem or if there was something else that I am missing here, or could try. Originally, I thought it was a itune problem but my phone sinc's fine and apparently my phone just is not accessing an available Wi-Fi connection.

  • ITunes cannot connect to the Music Store, iTunes cannot connect to the Music Store

I have tried to upgrade, but all software is as up to date as it will let me. Can I add RAM to it? Can I install the latest OS? And more importantly; I would like to put Office on thos, as well as a few simple apps for my son. How can I do this? I miss iTunes!!!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
How much RAM is currently installed?
Which version of iTunes is it running now?
Do you have the original Install and Restore disc(s) that came with the iBook when it was new?
Do you have the Mac OS X 10.4 Install disc?
You cannot install the latest Mac OS on any iBook. Sorry.
An older version of Office may work, but may not be necessary.

    Hi Tehteh
    I hear your frustrations!
have you tried adding c:\program files\itunes as an exception to your anti-virus program and to any firewalls that you have running?
this seems to have worked for many people including myself (i have AVG Free and Comodo firewall on XP)
