ITunes - cannot edit info

I am unable to make any changes in iTunes. Usually a slow double-click allows me to change Title, Artist, Genre, etc. When I right-click and select get info, the fields are all unavailable.
Is there something I can do?

I just upgraded to windows vista and iTunes 8.0 and had the same problem with all my songs that were originally windows media player songs, all in a separate folder from iTunes. I had iTunes import them all into its library, went to get info to edit and could not. Every field was grayed out. I went to my top level separate folder, clicked properties, clicked the security tab, and clicked 'Advanced". Selected the "permission entry" that matched my computer name (i.e. User (***\User) that had permission set to 'read & execute'. Then clicked 'Edit'. After the stupid vista continue dialog box, I selected the same entry again and clicked 'Edit'. Under 'Allow' in the list of permissions I checked the 'Full Control' box. Then OK, Apply, OK, etc...
Went into iTunes, I can now edit info on all my songs. Please let me know if this helps.

  • Cannot Edit Info

    Hey guys.
Today, after wiping my laptop and reinstalling iTunes, I added all my songs back onto iTunes using "Add Folder to Library". I logged into my iTunes account, and I authorized my computer. Now that I've synched my iPod Touch with my library, I've noticed that no matter what I do, I cannot edit song information. Nothing. Can't change the name of songs, Artists, Albums, or Artwork. When I go into "Get Info", the "Info" tab is completely greyed out. Along with "Video", "Sorting", "Options", and "Artwork". The only thing I can change is the Rating of the songs.
I can, however, right-click any song, click on "Create AAC version", and once that's complete, I can edit the NEW version. (Although, old and new versions are both AAC versions).
So, anyone have an easier way of setting my iTunes to edit my songs, or do I have to create AAC versions of my huge library?

I've done as that guide says, but when I get to the final steps, I get an error message saying:
"An error occured while applying security information to:
    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
    Access is denied."
So it still won't allow me to edit songs within iTunes.
EDIT: I've just noticed if I shift-click the desktop icon for iTunes, and select "Run as...", I can edit songs within iTunes, but I don't want to be shift-clicking each time I wish to use iTunes as its worked fine before.

  • Cannot edit info on tracks, have permissions set correctly.

So, I'm running the majority of my music off an external, the same external that hosts time machine. I created a seperate folder on the drive not involved with the back-ups for this to work. All of the permissions for all of the songs I've randomly checked are read and write.
But for some odd reason I cannot change any info on my tracks. Event though I have permission. I am also, the only user.
I CAN change the info for the mp3 files I have just imported from my desktop, not reading off the external. What am I missing here?

well I don't know why this happened, but it has resolved itself.
I suppose it was fixed after a reboot? not sure, but this is no longer an issue.

  • Entered incorrect Wi-Fi login, cannot edit info

So I tried to log in to my school's network, but I entered the wrong username, and I cannot seem to fix it. I have tried using the Assit Me button, but the network doesn't appear, and when I just enter its name, I don't have an option to enter a username (only a password). Anyone dealt with this before?

Sorry, but this is not really an AirPort networking issue or a problem with your MacBook Pro. I would suggest that you contact your school's IT department for assistance.

  • Cannot edit info about my upload?

The info is three years old and needs updating. Must I trash all and reupload?
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm?event=extensionDetail&loc=en_us&extid=1044 295
In 'My Account' I am told that I have no uploads, when I actually do have two. I suppose my problems are connected to the site revamp a while back. What is the fix?
    Thanx!

    Hi Digital Crafts,
Can you please post your concern to [email protected]?

I ran into the same problem, I think that, If you tab on a song that is on your IPOD, and the song data is grayed-out, I think it means that the song is probably twice on your IPOD and that the iTunes directory can not edit THAT song data for two (or more) files @once. Check if this is the case, sinceI have the same problem,am looking for a way to have One and the same song in more playlists but only keep the song once on the IPOD.

  • Cannot edit track info in itunes

    I just downloaded iTunes v. 10.6.3.25
I connected my iPhone to my computer and let iTunes see that it's there. If I try to go in under devices to my music library that is on the phone NOT in the library on the computer and try to right click, get info, I cannot edit any of the track information in there.
Do I have to sync the phone to my iTunes and transfer all of the music to the computer to be able to edit the info? I have an older iPod and I can connect it, go into devices and edit in there with no issues, it just won't let me do it on the phone.
    Please help!!

Personally, I would edit the information in your iTunes Library and then connect the iPhone and Sync the library with the iPhone.
Since it's a Sync (synchronization) of iTunes with your iPhone, any new information on the phone (such as play counts) will be synced with iTunes while the updated track information in the library will be synced with the phone.

  • I am trying to edit track names and genres from the library in iTunes, but the Get Info window has everything in grey, so I cannot edit anything. How do I edit?

I am trying to edit track names and genres from the library in iTunes, but the Get Info window has everything in grey, so I cannot edit anything. How do I edit? Any ideas?

I have the same problem since I installed iTunes 11.1.0.126.

  • HT3814 Why does iTunes on my MacBook Pro not remember/save edited info about CDs? It does on my G4.

I haven't used iTunes in awhile to play CDs. Lately though it is not remembering CD info I put into iTunes. I have been using iTunes since the late 90s. I have always been able to edit info for ANY CD I play on iTunes and that computer would remember that info. Lately my MacBook Pro isn't remembering this info. I am able to edit CDs on my G4 Powerbok and it is remembering the info. (The G4 is using 10.4.11 and iTunes 9.2.1 (5). I am using 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.6.1 (7) on the MBP.) This used to work on the MBP but I haven't dealt with CDs in 6 months or so so I don't know more closley when this behavior changed.)
I've had a go-rounds with Apple Care. Some say I have to import each track for iTunes to remember any edits on that track. I tried that today and that appears to be how things work now. That was not the case up until now. Has iTunes changed how it works?
I realize that iTunes will read file names on the CD if they are burned into the CD. I used Toast for some recent CDs I burned on the MBP awhile ago and voila, those files names are appearing whern I pop the CD in. I cannot edit them so that iTunes remembers them though unless I import whatever track I wanted to edit the info from. OK. That's a step backwards but OK. (I realize I am not editing the info on the CD itself. Once a CD is burned that's impossible, I would only be editing the info that iTunes has about it...) Most of the CDs I have burned do not have track titles as file names.
I know about the CD Info.cidb file. That is where info that I add manually (and info that Gracenote adds, which I also can edit...) gets saved. In the past I could edit ANY CD, regardless of where it came from, and that info would be saved in that file. That is not happening now.
I have moved the CD Info.cidb file to my desktop and edited some info. ITunes is NOT creating a new CD Info.cidb file.
So, has anything changed with iTunes or is there something else going on here? It could be a third-party app or an OS problem.
    Thanks for any help.
    Cheers,
    John L
PS Apple Care is looking into this some more and will call me back next Thursday if not before then. My fingers are crossed that will have some info that is helpful. If I now have to import a track so that I can edit it (and save that info) on a CD, well, so be it but it doesn't seem to be a step forward...
PPS For some reason, Apple put this under the iTunes Store. I would have put it under just iTunes. I forget the page where I asked the title of this question (which has since been edited). It then brought me to this particular forum. I would have moved it if I could...

Basically anything not purchased from iTunes that is on my iPhone 6 will not sync over to my MacBook. I have tried to just manually back it up but only the purchased music will sync over to iTunes.

  • Cannot Edit Song Info

I have several MP3 files that I cannot edit the info for. I just noticed/incurred this issue after upgrading to iTunes 9.0.0.70. After the iTunes 9.0.1.8 upgrade, I am still having the issue.
When I try to click into a field, the cursor does not appear. When I right-click and choose "Get Info," everything is grayed out.
This happens to MP3 files downloaded from the internet, MP3 files that I create/record myself on my PC, and also MP3 files ripped from CD. It does not happen with every MP3, though. Also, it can happen with some MP3 files from the same source as others that I can edit.
One note is that I can find the file via Windows Explorer and physically edit the properties of the MP3 files using the "Advanced" properties. As soon as I change the title, author, album, etc. and play the song in iTunes, all of the correct/adjusted fields show.
Another note that I have noticed on one particular pair of editable/non-editable MP3 files from the same source is that one is recognized as ID3 Tag v2.2 and one is ID3 Tag v2.3.
Is this a known iTunes 9.0 bug or is there a fix for this issue?

OK...Here's something to complicate the matter for you:
I just went through some of my older MP3 files, some that I have customized the info on, and all of the info was grayed out and uneditable. I went through a few in a row and found one that I could edit. I closed the window and tried to edit the MP3s again. This time, I found that I could edit all of the ones I could not edit (just 5 seconds earlier) but could not edit the one I previously could edit. After closing the windows and trying a third time, I could edit all of the MP3 files in the list.
What is up? Apple, are you aware of this issue?

There is nothing that you can do to get rid of the balance on your own. Contact iTunes Store Support and seek their assistance. I believe that they can reset your balance for you.

  • I transferred all my Itunes music from an old PC to my new one with Windows 7.  Now I cannot edit "artist" or anything else for the songs.  It is all greyed out and I cannot enter information. Is there any way to correct this problem?

I transferred all of my music from an older PC to my new one with Windows 7.  Now I cannot edit selected songs.  The information is greyed out and I can't type over it (on all my music except NEW downloads).  Can anyone help?  I even have a few songs with NO artist tag and I can't write anything in them either.

It's a permissions problem. Try this: right click on your iTunes icon and choose "run as administrator" that might fix it.

if my external hard drive is not connected to either of my machines, and I download something onto my iMac and then something different onto my Macbook, where are my machines going to be storing the new downloaded media
when the drive is not connected, +iTunes media folder location+ will default back to <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music/iTunes/iTunes music (or media)
and when I next connect the external hard drive how will I easily get the newly downloaded media onto the external HD
you'd have to point +iTunes media folder location+ back to the external via preferences > advanced > iTunes media folder location, then file > library, organize library > consolidate files
and essentially, to have it easily readable on both machines?
in that case it might be best to copy the entire iTunes folder to the external. then, on each machine, launch iTunes while pressing option on your keyboard. when prompted, click on +choose library+ and navigate to the iTunes folder on the external.
note only one iTunes can access the iTunes library @ a time !
also, make sure the external is mounted on either machine before launching iTunes.

  • HT1386 I sync all songs, photos and videos between my computer and iPod classic with no problems, but when I get to sync info I get this message: "iTunes cannot sync Calendar and contacts to iPod. Try logging out of Windows adn then logging back in".

I sync all songs, photos and videos between my computer and iPod classic with no problems, but when I get to sync info I get this message: "iTunes cannot sync Calendar and contacts to iPod. Try logging out of Windows adn then logging back in".  Could you please help?

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.

Personally, I suggest you don't put a credit card in your iTunes account until you are actually going to make a purchase. Then there's no chance of anyone using it or your iTunes account for purchases.
To remove the old card  number, edit the account (as mentioned in the previous posts above) and select None.
