ITunes cannot restore iPod in recovery mode.
I connect the iPod, and iTunes recognizes instantly, and tells me that it has detected the iPod in recovery mode etc. Then I click Restore and it normally extracts restoring software, and then a window appears that it cannot sync.

open iTunes
-plug the iPod into the computer
-hold both sleep/wake and home button until iPod restarts.
-let go of of the sleep/wake button when you see Apple logo.
-continue to hold home button until iTunes pops up with recovery mode
-click yes, and your iPod will be restored to its factory settings.

iTunes gives me the message that it has detected an iPod in recovery mode and that I need to restore the factory settings. When I click the "restore" button iTunes downloads the software. This is a 30 minute process. Once the download completes, I get the same message "iTunes detects an iPod in recovery mode....". I'm running Windows Vista and ZoneAlarm security software.
I've tried this restore function multiple times and still get the same results.

Help. I am getting the following error when I plug my ipod into the desktop computer. It tells me "iTunes has detected iPod in recovery mode You must restore this iPod before it can be used with itunes." However I plug the same ipod into my laptop computer and it works just fine. It is 4 gig nano runnning version 1.3.1 ipod software. Both computers are running iTunes 7.

If you're just getting that message on the desktop, I'd check for a Windows drive letter confusion on the desktop. There's troubleshooting advice on that possibility at the end of the following document:

You could try restoring it your self by doing this:
-put the hold button on then off
-Hold the menu and centre button together for over 6 seconds
-When the apple logo appears you put it on the computer to charge it

Restoring Ipod from Recovery Mode
Hi,
I tried updating to iPod OX 3.1.2, only to be told that the update had failed, and that the iPod had gone into recovery mode. I have tried all methods listed on the support article, including using a different computer, but still get the 'unknown error' message, code 14 on the original computer, or code 1603 on the other computer I tried. Is there any way to restore the iPod, as it just fails to restore each time.

ipod touch 4g wont connect to itunes or come out of recovery mode, its just stuck on the connect to itunes screen and will not come out, i tried doing a restore but something happened and now it wont finish or do anything else please help and my itunes will not see that its connected. i also tried going though control panel and restarting the service and nothing happens. also i tried redoing the driver but its saying it cannot find any drivers for it

I updated my Ipod touch 4th gen (IO6 or whatever its called) And it has the picture that says to connect my ipod to Itunes, and I did, now it says "ITunes has detected an Ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this Ipod before it can be used with ITunes." I just updated it and now I have to restore it??! I don't wanna lose all my things on my ipod just for a stupid update! Please someone help!
Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything... and you must continue with the Recovery...

Take your time... Pay particular attention to Steps 3 and 4.
After you have Recovered your Device...
Re-Sync your Content or Restore from the most recent Backup...

I have restored and updated my ipod from recovery mode, however I still have the usb cord and itunes icon on the ipod when it is switched on. How can I get my ipod to work again? I have updated and restored 5 times! When connected to itunes it only shows the summary page saying ipod in recovery mode.
Fixed it!
1. Made sure itunes software was up to date
2. Pressed and held 'home' button and 'on-off' button at the same time for about 10 seconds till ipod reset (I hadn't done this step previously)
3. Connected to itunes
4. Pressed restore and update ipod

No idea why the upgrade to 4.3.3 failed in the first place and no idea why iTunes was not clever enough to just do it by itself when it detected that there was a problem in the first place. -

I'm trying to put my music on my new iPod and keep getting this error message "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore the iPod before it canb work with iTunes". I click "restor to factory settings" and then the same error message comes up when it's complete. iTunes does recognize my iPod, it just doesn't seem to realize that I've already done what it's telling me to do. I had some new albums I bogut from Itunes and wanted to put them on my Ipod Touch. Went to do that, ITunes said there was an update. I downloaded the update and then I couldn't see anything in my Ipod nor listen to anything. The screen of my Ipod shows a USB cable pointing to Itunes and when I plug it into ITunes again I get the message "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." And the ONLY option it gives me is to restore my IPod to factory settings. I looked online for answers but all I see are people having problems with this because they bricked their phone, which I haven't ever done or even know how to do. Would appreciate some help, planned on spending my day off listening to my new albums.

Are you sure it is 1043? I've never seen that error before. But you can try disabling your security software, connecting the phone to a USB port directly on the computer (not a hub), and trying to restore again.

Because you can't backup a device that is in Recovery mode.
You have to restore the iPod and restore from backup if you have a backup

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
