ITunes cannot save its library file

Since yesterday (Sun 4-Aug) I have been seeing this unfortunate message from iTunes:
The iTunes library file cannot be saved. You do not have enough access priveleges for this operation.
***? the iMac had priveleges before then, for weeks. It has written dozens of CD tracks since then. It seems the ONLY file it cannot write is the Library File.
All of the data is on a remote NAS unit. Loads of space. I have been adding my CD collection for months. Until now, of course. The few CDs since yesterday do not show in the listings after restarting iTunes. I can see that the album contents were copied to the same location as the Library File. It would seem the Library File is magical somehow.
How do I fix this stupidity?

I "fixed" this:
changed the the Library's path to another <iTunes Media> directory
copied the "unwriteable" library files to the new location
pointed iTunes to the new location when it started.
iTunes is functional again.
For such a popular program iTunes is not very well designed or implemented. At least not the parts where I have an interest.

    Hi there Br0x,
You may want to try rebuilding the iTunes library as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • My biggest 'pain' at the moment is that every time I go to change then save a Photoshop CS3 file it says 'cannot save as the file as it has been left open or is in use by another application'

My biggest 'pain' at the moment is that every time I go to change then save a Photoshop CS3 file it says 'cannot save as the file as it has been left open or is in use by another application'

Rule Number One - NEVER go directly uinto the iPhoto library - there are no user servicable parts in it and making any change no matter how small can corrupt your library and cause data or photo loss
Exactly how were you trying to save a copy of your iPhoto library?
Albumdata.xml does not contain your photos - and again NEVER make any changes to the content of the iPhoto library - no dragging - no changes - never go into the library
We need to know exactly what you did
And probalby the easiest solution is to load your backup from before you messed things up
For reference after you get things working
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • ITunes cannot read my library!

Just now, I downloaded the newest version of iTunes and it posted this message when I opened the application:
The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.
What should I do about this?
    Why did this happen?
    Please help.

I am having the same problem "iTunes cannot read my library", after getting a new iMac and transferring all of my data to the new computer. I have Leopard, but it is 10.4.10, not 10.5. It's quite frustrating. I tried your suggestion of launching iTunes from almost anywhere but it didn't work. Anyone else having the same problem? Or have any other ideas? Thanks.

  • My itunes recently lost its library for no apparent reason.

My itunes recently lost its library for no apparent reason. The only library backup is an old one that does not reflect my current iPhone, and I do not want to have to re-input all the lyrics for the music I have imported in that time. Does itunes not automatically create a backup of its libraries? Is there anyway to copy this information off the iPhone?
I'm okay to simply drag all my music into a new itunes library, I don't want to go through the process of editing each individual file again, whether its cutting certain start/stop times, or inputting the lyrics for every single song...
Any ideas? I've tried googling a solution for hours. I even tried to system restore. This morning when opening Itunes, it simply told me that it could not locate a library, please select a library.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Cancel cannot save to the file because it is in use

    Hi guys,
From a couple of days ago i cannot export ANY pdf file in InDesign withouth the "cannot save to the file because it is in use by one or more background tasks". It seems there is a "temporary files" are saving. So the trick is to delete the file from the Finder and save the PDF again. It is annoying that i cannot replace the pdf directly with the same name.
    Can i override this situation?
    Any help or ideas?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the fast reply
Actually i learn before from a forum that could be an issue so i take care so the file is not marked. Nevertheless it keeps telling me the file is in use. What could it be?
    Cheers

  • ITunes won't recognize "library files" of  playlists and ratings

After a Restore and putting iTunes onto an external hard drive, I can't get iTunes to recognize the library files that have my playlists and ratings.
How do you get the library files (itl and xml) to be recognized after moving all your music and iTunes to an external hard drive?
I just did a Restore on my iPod. Just before that, I had backed up my iTunes folder to an external hard drive and bought a new laptop. After I did the Restore, I was able to iTunes to recognize that my library is now on the external hard drive (to free up space on my laptop). The Apple Genius told me I could get the existing library files to work by just moving them into my iTunes folder on the external hard drive.
But iTunes doesn't recognize that I have any playlists, etc.

I think the library database files have to be in your "My Music" folder under the folder "itunes". I have not found a way of changing this. The music library can be elsewhere, but you need to have itunes do the move to keep the library database files in sync.

Just upgraded to Mavericks. Now I cannot access scans from my hp scanner. After it complete the scans and I try to save as tiff, jpeg or pdf I get a either a grey blur or a message that says cannot save because the file cannot be written to. I did not have any problems before the upgrade. I would greatly appreciate any light shed on this.

Go to the HP site and look for drivers for your scanner. It apparently needs an updated driver to work with Mavericks.

  • Fatal error C1083: Cannot open type library file: '..\..\bin\TsAdpApi.tlb': No such file or directory

    Hi Folks:
I am doing one Dll file for TestStand , and got an error : d:\teststand3.5\teststand 3.5\examples\modaldialogs\mfc\tsapivc.h(18) : fatal error C1083: Cannot open type library file: '..\..\bin\TsAdpApi.tlb': No such file or directory
Could anyone help me out of that ??
    Thanks in advance !

This type library for the adapter API is embedded in the teapi.dll. If you are using Visual Studio.NET, there is an attribute called tlbid that you can use with the #import directive in order to import that embedded library (see the MSDN documentation for more details). For example:
    #import tlbid(2)
In VC++ 6.0, there is no way to import embedded type libraries. Therefore, you must use the attached type library file (.tlb) with the #import directive. For example:
    #import "TsAdpApi.tlb"

  • Cannot save the downloaded files

    Hello,
I usually downloaded the scientific paper (pdf file) from many sites. After I use the Adobe acrobat 9, I cannot save these pdf files which is on the window.
I usually downloaded from 'ScienceDirect' site. Download process is good. But when I click the save icon on the acrobat, there is no response.
    I use Window Vista x64.
    What should I do?

Save As. The save button should be greyed out since it is already saved to your TEMP folder as you are viewing it.

  • ITunes "cannot save library file" error in Vista

I just began ripping my latest pile of cd's into iTunes on my new Vista Media Center PC. Occasionally I get the popup "The iTunes library file cannot be saved. You do not have enough access privileges for thei operation" I checked and double checked the security on all of the iTunes files and folders, and not only do I (the system administrator), but also SYSTEM and Everyone have full access to the folder and files. My library is in C:\Users\Jerry\Music\iTunes\ , which is the default installation directory selected by iTunes. I have almost 11,000 songs, and I have already completely rebuilt the library in this version of iTunes as a means to try to resolve this problem. I am on iTunes 7.2.0.16 , everything on the PC is up to date, and I see nothing that makes this error seem correct. Has anyone else seen this, and do you have a fix? What are the implications of NOT saving the file? Thanks, Jerry

Same issue here. Running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition and newest version of iTunes. Normally happens when I am ripping a CD into iTunes and by chance multi task or the screen saver kicks in.
What ***** is if you walk away while ripping a CD(because it takes 3 times as long in iTunes vs any other ripper), and it will halt your ripping until you click "ok". I have not tried the "dont tell me again" check box just in case it is a problem I need to know about. This happened about 2 or 3 days after upgrading to Vista and I got an empty library the next time I opened the library. Somehow it got corrupted. Luckily I back up the xml file and just restored that one file from last back up.
(off subject but also getting the maxed our processor still in the newest version for Windows Vista. Wish they would fix that!)

  • ITunes cannot save library

Ive just moved my itunes library to another disk and it all seems to be working fine..... but for some reason I keep getting 'cannot save itunes library error'
I moved the library from <user>/music/itunes to /media/itunes (media is the new disk), and i did this by change the library address to the new location in the preferences and then consolidating the library.... before the actual music was organised in <user>/music/itunes/itunes music and after consolidating it put the music in /media/itunes, so im guessing that itunes is unable to write the database files into the correct location.....
How can i get the database files to write without risking losing my library?

Hi, I have read and write permissions on the newly installed disk and read and write permissions in the folder the music is in....
The verify and repair permissions buttons are greyed out in disk utility..... could this be to do with the formatting? its formatted as mac os extended (journaled).
