ITunes "cannot save library file" error in Vista

I just began ripping my latest pile of cd's into iTunes on my new Vista Media Center PC. Occasionally I get the popup "The iTunes library file cannot be saved. You do not have enough access privileges for thei operation" I checked and double checked the security on all of the iTunes files and folders, and not only do I (the system administrator), but also SYSTEM and Everyone have full access to the folder and files. My library is in C:\Users\Jerry\Music\iTunes\ , which is the default installation directory selected by iTunes. I have almost 11,000 songs, and I have already completely rebuilt the library in this version of iTunes as a means to try to resolve this problem. I am on iTunes 7.2.0.16 , everything on the PC is up to date, and I see nothing that makes this error seem correct. Has anyone else seen this, and do you have a fix? What are the implications of NOT saving the file? Thanks, Jerry

Same issue here. Running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition and newest version of iTunes. Normally happens when I am ripping a CD into iTunes and by chance multi task or the screen saver kicks in.
What ***** is if you walk away while ripping a CD(because it takes 3 times as long in iTunes vs any other ripper), and it will halt your ripping until you click "ok". I have not tried the "dont tell me again" check box just in case it is a problem I need to know about. This happened about 2 or 3 days after upgrading to Vista and I got an empty library the next time I opened the library. Somehow it got corrupted. Luckily I back up the xml file and just restored that one file from last back up.
(off subject but also getting the maxed our processor still in the newest version for Windows Vista. Wish they would fix that!)

  • Itunes cannot save library error -50

This error has been occurring for at least 2 years. I don't see anything in the community that has ever fixed this and I am now slowly moving to Spotify. I have over 400k songs and this itunes error continues to pop up any time that I search, go to the itunes store, make a playlist, add music... pretty much when I do anything. It is extremely frustrating. If I shut itunes down immediately after the error occurs, my changes will sometimes be saved. This happens about 50% of the time and takes approximately 27 seconds for the saving itunes library window to pop up. The rest of the time any changes are lost.
    Info:
    I run Itunes as admin
Library itl and xml files are NOT read only
When I clear the itunes store cache and reset warnings it lock up itunes and I have to kill it with Windows task manager
Any help that you can provide will be appreciated

    Thanks Pedro,
I have seen this article. Since the error occurs mostly when I am just in itunes adding music or listening, I didn't do any of the things that were mentioned. This time I shut off Windows Firewall and Turned Off Norton Anti Virus. The problem still occurred.
I have a workaround for adding files that is working sort of:
When adding files they must finish adding in under 1 minute.
At 1:04 to 1:43 the -50 error occurs. If I close the error and then close itunes immediately, 25-27 seconds later it will save the changes.
I then reopen itunes and have access with my updated library until the error occurs again.
Going to the itunes store then coming back to the library whether I buy anything or not will generate an error. I buy my digital music from Amazon now because of this.
I don't think that this problem will ever be fixed until Apple dedicates the necessary resources to fix this. It is a pervavsive issue that has been going on for years.

  • FYI: How to Fix "iTunes Cannot Find Original File" Error

Yesterday morning, I opened iTunes and tried to play a file. I got the old "iTunes cannot find the original file" error. I tried another file. Same thing. I tried restarting iTunes, holding down the shift key, and making sure iTunes knew where my Library file was. Yep. Still no dice. So I came here, and did a search for help. I could not find any definitive answers to this question. So I did a Google search and found the fix in an old Metafilter thread. Given that this problem seems a little common, I thought I'd post my solution here, for anyone who has this issue in the future.
First things first, make sure that it's not just an issue of pointing iTunes to your current library location. Go to your advanced preferences and double-check the library location path. If this doesn't fix it, then it's time to go my route:
    1) Open your iTunes folder in windows explorer. Look for a file called "itunes library.xml". Copy that file to your desktop or somewhere else so that it's backed up...in case something goes wrong.
    2) Open the original XML file in notepad (right-click, "open with", "notepad").
    3) In this XML file, you will see a paragraph of information for every file you have (songs, podcasts, videos, etc.). In each of those paragraphs, there is a file path specifying where the file is supposed to reside. This is how the itunes library.itl file knows where to look. In my case, it should have been "e:/my music/itunes", but instead, it was "e:/my music/itunes/itunes music". The program had created that folder for some reason, and all my files were pointing there.
    4) Check a few of the paragraphs and see if they are pointing to your actual music folder. If so, then you have another problem...sorry. If not, then continue on:
    5) Go to edit->replace (or control-H). In the "find what" box, enter the incorrect file path (in my case, e:/my music/itunes/itunes music"). In the "replace with" box, enter the correct path of your itunes music folder (in my case, "e:/my music/itunes". Then click "replace all".
If you have a lot of songs, this may take awhile. I have over 25,000 files, so it took at least 18 hours.
    6) When it's done, quit notepad and save the XML file. Open iTunes. If it doesn't automatically start updating your library, then try to play a song. If you get the same old error, then quite iTunes, then re-open it, go to the advanced preferences and select the correct file path for the library location. This should fix it.

I am also finding many "ghost file" duplicate files (with the exclamation point "can not locate files" message), after pointing Itunes version 8.2.1.6 to my music folder on a separate, networked hard drive. My understanding is that the "Consolidate Files" feature in Itunes is supposed to properly identify all of the file locations, but it only worked for about 1/5 of our 10,000 plus files before it stopped running. (I've read in other forums that this software is buggy, and gets confused with long song titles, etc.)It also leaves you with duplicate "ghost" files to delete, when the music from the separate drive is "added".
I can not find a file called ituneslibrary.xml to try your suggestion, when I open my Itunes folder. When I do "get info" on the individual music files in Itunes that can't be located, the "where" field = "not available". I have doublechecked the library location in preferences and it is properly pointed to "K:\itunes" which is the correct location.

  • ITunes cannot save library

Ive just moved my itunes library to another disk and it all seems to be working fine..... but for some reason I keep getting 'cannot save itunes library error'
I moved the library from <user>/music/itunes to /media/itunes (media is the new disk), and i did this by change the library address to the new location in the preferences and then consolidating the library.... before the actual music was organised in <user>/music/itunes/itunes music and after consolidating it put the music in /media/itunes, so im guessing that itunes is unable to write the database files into the correct location.....
How can i get the database files to write without risking losing my library?

Hi, I have read and write permissions on the newly installed disk and read and write permissions in the folder the music is in....
The verify and repair permissions buttons are greyed out in disk utility..... could this be to do with the formatting? its formatted as mac os extended (journaled).

  • Cannot save Library File?

I have updated my iTunes so I'm hoping it's just a bug but, recently I've been receiving this message:
"the iTunes library file cannot be saved. an unknown error occurred. (-48)."
Does anyone know if this is a bug or if not, how to resolve this?
    I have iTunes 7.4.1.2

I was wondering if you ever figured out your problem? I'm also struggling with this identical issue.

  • Cannot save library file message

I am repeatedly getting an error message "The itunes library file cannot be saved an unknown error has occurred (-1450). When I start itunes, I have to manually add a temp file which only has some to my music. What do I do?

Dude, I have the same exact problem and it just comes up randomly when I am just going through itunes and listenting to music. The exact same error code. I tried uninstalling itunes once so far, and it worked ok for two days, then all of a sudden right after I got done synching my iPod, the message appeared and i kept clicking ok over and over and it kept appearing. I've had the same error message about 5 times at different times now and it's extremely frustrating. It's the reason I joined this forum. Sorry I don't have answer but your not alone and we definitely need help itunes!

  • Error message (-48) cannot save library

I have the library saved on a network drive and it was working fine until I just started getting the error message "cannot save library error (-48). But the library is still there and it appears that new songs/pods are being saved. Any idea what this error message is? Thanks

That error is referring to the iTunes Library.itl or .xml file, as explained in this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732
WHen are you seeing this error, when you try to close itunes?
Can you rename that file? Because if you can't, the operating system is confused and thinks something has a lock on it. Restarting your PC should clear that situation.

  • Access Privileges error, cannot save library

I have had my iPod for 4+ years but after upgrading software about a year ago, I repeatedly get the error "Cannot save Library. You do not have enough access privileges." I have followed recommendations in previous threads to unmark the read-only button but to no avail. Very frustrating. Please help before I switch to a Zune.

  • I am trying to download iTunes, but cannot save the file because the thank you page comes up right away.

I am trying to download itunes 11.1.3.
    I cannot save the file,ItunesSetup.exe.
I click on Save File and nothing happens, I use XP.  The thank you page comes up right away

I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

  • I keep getting error message (cannot save as "file name" because of a program error)

I opened a pdf in photoshop and when I need to save it back as a pdf i get this error (cannot save as "file name" because of a program error). I need to save it specifically as PDF/X-1a:2001 but the only pdf options that will work are "highest quality print" and "smallest file size". None of the others work. I'm running Photoshop CS5 on a PC laptop and I tried it on my desktop and also a mac running CS 5.5 and always get the same error. I think the problem might be with the custom color settings I have but it works fine on my work computer with the same color settings. What could be going on?

Yes, it's probably related to your color settings in some way. Why you are doing it in the first place...? Since they are ISO standards there is simply no liberty in choosing arbitrary settings for PDF/X, especially the archicval flavors... So in conclusion you will have to make your color settings compliant. The crash itself is probably a bug in the PDF libraries and it may work at your office because there you may use a different version of Acrobat/ Adobe Reader and the associated PDF libraries which do not have this bug. Still, the initial issue remains: You need to work within the spec, not against it.

If you're getting that one on iTunes 7.3.0.54, try an upgrade to iTunes 7.3.1.3. (Note that Michael, who replied to you earlier in the thread, is reporting that here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4923385#4923385 )

  • PPT has found an error and cannot save the file in Microsoft Powerpoint2010

I have been working in 2010 for 6 months and this is the 3rd time I have experienced this error.  I am using my own 2010- created, macro-enabled template - I want to save the file but I get an error message stating PPT
has found an error and cannot save the file.
This has happened on both newly created files using this template, and files previously successfully saved.  The template has been used without error many, many times.
I have on occassion been able to save as a 97-2003 file and then resave (with some loss of function) as a 2010 macro-enabled file, on another occassion I was not able to do this and lost some work.
Copying into a new document didn't solve the problem. Copying into a different template didn't solve the problem.
Any ideas what is happening, and how I can stop it happening?
    Kind regards

    Hi,
Have you tried saving the file in *.pptm format (basically this extension is for powerpoint presentation with macros)
Maybe try Save As and see if you can save it under a different name.
Once you get the file closed, then reopen PPT and go to Office Button | PPT Options | Resources. Run Office Diagnostics there.
In addition, make sure you have a local printer driver installed and set as the default printer. And it really might fix the issue.
Here's info on what to do:http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00952.htm

  • Error -50 : unknown error - cannot save library

    Hello everybody,
I recently changed from windows 7 pc to windows 8 pc and I have installed the most recent version of iTunes (11.0.4.4). However, when ever I start up iTunes I get an error message that iTunes can't save library; unknow error -50. I googled on the internet for solutions. The most solutions were from years ago and not specific for windows 7. So until know nothing solved my problem. I cant imagine that I am the only one having this problem. Therefore I kinda was hoping that one of you fellow iTunes enthousiatic users has or had the same problem and can help me solving it.
Before you all redirect me to another similar threat on this forum; I have seen it and I have readt it. And I tried the suggestions. And they didn't work. And I noticed that all the answers and suggestion were for Mac OS users. I use Windows 8 ! So I was hoping that someone could suggest solutions for Windows 8 users.
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Frank

The error has been addressed in the latest iTunes version 7.3.1

  • Fixing Library Playback Issue in iTunes after Moving Library Files

I recently backed up my iTunes Library to my external hard drive and deleted the iTunes Library off of my HD to free up space. Now when I try to play songs from my library I get an error message stating that iTunes cannot find my file for each item I play. I then have to locate each file in my library to get songs to play.
I have tried checking the path to where my library is located in Preferences but when iTune tries to sync my library I get an exclamation icon next to every item!
Aaaaargh! What can I do to get my files synced back with iTunes so they play automatically without me having to locate each file manually? I have over 5608 items in my library! I cannot manually try and locate each file to listen or watch. That's a major nightmare. Can someone help?

    hey.
finally somebody with the same problem! i bought a new external drive because i was running out of space and backed up my entire library. then my computer crashed and i wanted to take advantage of a clean drive and not add my whole library back onto my computer. i'd love to be able to access my music folder on the external and have that show up as my library on iTunes when connected...
i followed all the steps as closely as possible and am pretty confident that my advanced preferences in iTunes are correct, but the library does not show these songs from the external drive. have you had any feedback or figured it out on your own?! i hope so, i'm at a deadend.
