ITunes cannot update iPod - unknown error occured.

and then it says something about (-36)
can someone help/explain this for me?

not under normal circumstances. i've done 9 or 10 upgrades (and recently an uninstall and reinstall, as part of a troubleshoot experiment), and i haven't lost any music, ever.
... on the other hand, it's always a good idea to have backups, just in case of disasters. this Buegie post is a good resource on this (and searching on posts by "Zevoneer" should also give you good information on backups):

  • Cannot update ipod-unknown error occured(-50)

I downloaded a movie to my ipod using nero 7.0 without difficulty, accidently deleted it and now when I try to redo I get "cannot update ipod, unknown error occured (-50), disk could not be read or written to. It won't even let me reload the ipod. still shows error. P.S. I've tried the 5 R's

This is the only thing I can find on apples actual website about an error (-50)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93447
But im not sure if that applies to your problem, you can check it out though.
Have you gotten any of your songs from limewire? I've seen some posts on another website about this error maybe having something to do with songs from limewire.

  • Cannot update ipod, unknown error (-208)

    Hello,
For the past two months I've been using an 80GB iPod with my MacBook Pro, automatically syncing every few days, without a hitch. Suddenly, every time I try to update the iPod, I get an error to the effect of "iPod <foo> cannot be updated. Unknown error occurred (-208)."
I restored the iPod and synced it again. Everything was copied over fine, except for my contacts and the one photo album I want to copy over. So I tweaked those settings and first iTunes said I had no contacts to sync, and would I want to open Address Book. I open Address Book and sure enough, all my contacts are there. I get the same message about iCal, even though there are appointments in it. The photos did not copy over either.
Syncing even without those settings still brings up the error -208.
I googled around and couldn't find anything specific about this error code. When I looked up Apple error codes, I found this page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=9805, and the if it's the same error as the one I'm seeing in iTunes, it's a Sound Manager Error:
-208 badFileFormat File is corrupt or unusable, or not AIFF or AIFF-C
What's also weird is that iTunes says this iPod has 12,486 songs on it, while the iTunes library itself has 12,489 songs. But in the About screen on the iPod itself, it says I have 12,491 songs. I also have bought only 5 songs from the iTunes Store. Coincidence? Those songs play on the iPod just fine.
All my music is stored on an external firewire drive. But that's been the case since I owned my previous iBook, so it's not a new issue.
Anyone see this before? Anyone figure out a workaround?
    Many thanks!

I posted too soon. Just read another post regarding
a folder called "iPod Photo Cache". I am on a Mac
and found two such folders named this: one was in
the Pictures folder, the second was in the iPhoto
Library folder. I deleted them both. I re-started
iTunes, checked off to Sync iPhoto albums in the iPod
"tab area" (not sure what that screen in iTunes is
called), hit the Apply button and iTunes proceeded to
optimize my photos for my iPod and sync them. No
    more (-208) error!
Wow, this solved my issue... Thanks!

  • Im trying to put music on my iPod, but it keeps saying "iPod cannot be synced unknown error occurred". Whats wrong?

I tried to put music on my ipod and it keeps saying "cannot sync ipod unknown error occured" whats wrong??

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPod.  Again, say "yes."

  • TS1425 5th Generation Nano iPod.  The iPod syncs on iTunes when I connect it to my MAC, but when I try to add a song from iTunes to the iPod, I receive the message "Cannot be synced, unknown error occurred (1039)

5th generation iPod Nano - iPod syncs with my iTunes and I can see it in iTunes, but when I try to move a song from my iTunes to the iPod I get an error message "Cannot by synced, Unknown error occurred (1039).  System works fine with my 4th generation iPod Nano.  I'm afraid to "RESET" my iPod because I may not be able to restore my music and videos afterwards.

    Hello Ventanilla 97,
I agree with planb77 with recreating your itunes library. That will fix your issue. If you would like more step by step info go here:

    Hope this helps.

The iTunes Library file cannot be saved unknown error occurred (-54)

I was having this issue as well, after doing two things: updating iTunes yesterday, and installing and running ClamXav, a Mac antivirus tool.
I have now fixed the issue, first I made sure that I had the proper permissions for iTunes and it's library folders. Then I completely removed ClamXav and all its related files and restarted iTunes.  Now I no longer get this error when adding new media to iTunes or updating apps, and the library file saves fine.  For some reason I think it was related to the antivirus software.
I think it was a coincidence as ClamXav only modifies permissions on the files it installs and none of those are anywhere near your iTunes folders, but I'm glad you got it working.

if itunes can no longer pickup your ipod, and you cant even do anything to your ipod, your best option is to either call apple care, or just take it to the nearest apple shop. i had a similar problem, mines currently at apple care repairs and they might just end up giving me a replacement.

  • Help error message - iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store.  An unknown error occurred (0x80092013)

This message keeps coming up everytime I try and log in on iTunes:
iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store.  An unknown error occurred (0x80092013)
I have have looked at my proxy and unclicked the box.
I have enabled iTunes on my firewall.
I have uninstalled it and reinstalled the update.
I'm at a loss, can anyone help me know where I have gone wrong?
    Thank-you

If like me you have concluded that this is not a connectivity issue.
In my case it is a problem with Webkit2 and they way it handles SSL certificates.
To test if this is the case install Safari for windows 5.1.7(if not already installed) and try to access a secure site, like facebook or your banking, if you receive a certificate dialog box saying
"Safari can't verify the identity of the website"
If you hit "Continue" and the page loads but does not render correctly ........
Then try using another browser (IE/FF/Chrome) and see if you are able to access the site without prompts and the page renders correctly.
From Safari 4.04 onwards (as well as iTunes) it uses the windows root certificate store, to test uninstall Safari 5.1.7 and go back as far as Safar 3.2.3 (oldapps.com) and then try to access a secure site, if it renders correctly (back then Safari handled it's own certificates) you have the same problem as me
If you also look in the logs for itunes when you're accessing (attempting) the store if you find a reference to webkit2 and certificates that should further help clarify the problem. btw - don't bother with windows root certificate updates if your other browsers work ok
