ITunes cant handle VBR LAME mp3s (not anecdotal case, how do I contact tech

I use iTunes primarily on Windows XP. Starting with 6.0.2, playback of MP3's encoded with LAME using VBR settings resulted in problems - namely songs cutting off too early. iTunes has always handled the timing of these mp3's wrong (showcased when the display bar says the song has 0:00 remaining but it's still playing for a good couple seconds), but it's played to the end regardless of what time it thought it was at in the song. Starting with 6.0.2 (and continued in 6.0.3), iTunes simply stops when it reaches what it believes to be 0:00 remaining - meaning songs get cut off early.
I thought maybe it was my computer or my songs or something, so I started testing. First I reinstalled iTunes - no change. Then I reripped my songs, using EAC and --aps (high quality LAME VBR encoding) - still the same problems. These songs, as well as the originals, play on my iPod perfectly (and show the correct time, mind you). All these songs play perfectly in WinAmp and Windows Media Player too, so I'd consider myself 99% sure my songs aren't at fault.
Next was iTunes itself. My iBook laptop running Tiger still had 6.0.1 so I tried the songs there - they worked fine; the time was messed up as usual (just a couple seconds off at max, and only on certain songs, but it's been like this since 4.7 when I started using iTunes), but the songs played all the way to the end. I upgraded the laptop to 6.0.2 and the songs immediately started cutting out a few seconds before the end, at the exact same spot my Windows iTunes cut out (where it thought 0:00 remaining was).
Back on my Win XP desktop, I uninstalled 6.0.2 and reinstalled 6.0.1. My songs still cut out early. I had to remove them from my Library and re-add them to make them play right again. Just for kicks I upgraded my iBook to 6.0.3 to see if the mistake was fixed, but it's still the same - even after a removal and re-addition to the Library, the songs still cut off early.
As I said before, I'm 99% sure this problem is a fault of iTunes, and not a fault of mine. Cross-platform, with songs that should be fault-free (and play as if they are in every other media player I throw them at, as well as iPods themselves, which I feel is pretty telling), so that really just leaves iTunes. Anyone else experience this? Anyone know how I can get in touch with Apple to inform them of this issue? It really feels like they only test stuff with AAC files a lot of the time...

Come on, no one can even tell me how to contact Apple tech support?

  • Some Itunes songs in my library do not play. How do I play them?

Many of the songs purchased and located in my Itunes library do not play.  One of the common denominators with the non-playing songs is the Icloud with an arrow next to the song.  I've been instructed to click on these and nothing happens.     I've also checked my account for available downloads and receive a response indicating everything has already been downloaded.     My computer is authorized. The songs were purchased through Itunes and used to play.  I purchased the Icloud last year, never really used it and did not renew.   I spent 45 minutes (on the phone) with Apple support represenative yesterday. She did was not able to resolve the issue and after 15 minutes placed me on hold.  I waited 30 minutes for her ro return and finally hung up.
Perhaps, someone has had a simliar experience and can help me out.

    Hello Jeanette,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. Sorry to that there is an issue with some of your purchased songs.  First, I recommend trying to delete the problematic songs and redownload the songs from your past purchases.
Follow these steps to delete the song from your iPhone:
Delete a song from iPhone: In Songs, swipe the song, then tap Delete.
I found the steps to do this on page 61 of the iPhone User Guide (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf ):
You can follow the steps in the section titled "Apps, Books, Music, Movies, or TV shows on iOS" in the following article to redownload the songs (as long as you are signed in with the same Apple ID you used to purchase the songs, you will not be charged for the songs):
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

If you are still not able to play the songs after redownloading them, you can report an issue with these purchases using the steps in this article:

  • My iPad is disabled and it says to connect to iTunes with my Mac. Its not working. How can I get my iPad to work?

My iPad is  disabled and it says to connect to ITunes with my Mac. It still is not working.

    Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

  • ITunes 10.5.2.11 MP3 tag import not working correctly

    Hi,
I recently had a hard drive crash so I'm starting from a clean install of Windows XP SP3.
    Installed iTunes 10.5.2.11.
When importing MP3's into iTunes now sometimes iTunes reads the MP3 tags correctly.  Sometimes iTunes ignores the tags and inserts the file name into the artist field as shown in the image below.
The same MP3's worked perfectly with previous versions of iTunes...although they were all automatic updates of iTunes and not clean installs (if that might make a difference).  The same MP3 works fine with VLC or WMP with all the tagging correct.   Now it is roughly 50/50 whether they import correctly or not.  I've run the MP3's through MP3val and they come out clean.   I am confident the MP3 files are correctly tagged.
The MP3's were either ripped with iTunes or are bought through eMusic/iTunes.  Even with bought MP3's, with eMusic you couldn't be sure the producer would tag the files properly so I have put them through Musicbrainz tagger.
If I have imported an MP3 into iTunes and it has messed up the meta data, I have deleted the MP3s from iTunes, taken that MP3 into Musicbrainz, re-written the tags and then reimported the file.  Unless iTunes is restarted it still gives me the corrupted meta data.
However, as you can imagine, with several years worth of eMusic library and my CD collection worth of MP3's, it is a very tedious process to go through each album, retag everything, then restart iTunes and continue until it finds another set of tags it cannot import correctly.
Any ideas what is causing this as it only seems to have been an issue now with this version of iTunes from a clean install?

  • Itunes version 12.1.0.71 not support MP3

ITunes,version,12.1.0.71,not,support MP3 downloads - new version of ITunes not support download of MP3 - use for books from library.  WMA supported.  Prior versions supported well.

I Use OVERDRIVE MEDIA, supplied by library to download audio books from public libraries.\ - have done so for past 2 years or so.   I then transfer the books to my IPOD touch with OVERDRIVE interfacing with ITunes to load into IPOD.   Formats are either MP3 or WMA.  Until this week worked fine - both formats.   Downloaded ITUNES update to version 12.1.0.71 and will not process MP# format - WMA still works.  Books do not come in both, only 1.  OVERDRIVE is current and I reinstalled it.  I re-down loaded ITunes and did a "repair", but no luck.  I processed same book on my other Computer with older version of ITunes with no problem.  Checks with Apple "help" had extensive instructions for deleting and reading ITunes which I will try if this is perhaps a problem with my installation and not the current version.  Checking to see if others have had problems before I venture there.   I can also wait for next update using my backup CPU.  Any similar problems??
