  • Im trying to relocate my itunes to an external hd, now itunes cant locate

Hiya to anyone who can help, i have followed instructions to put my itunes library onto my external hd, but when i get itunes on another pc to open the hd, it has listed the songs but cant locate them, so i thought i hadnt copied them properly.
So i went back to my original itunes library on the hd of my pc, went into edit, preferences, advanced, changed my file location, had keep my itunes folder organized ticked but not the other. clicked ok, went into consolidate files and now itunes cant locate any of these songs either.
Please help, i dont know what else to do, i have spent hours on this when i am suppost to be revising. Please Please help me.

I am having a lot of trouble understanding what you have done because you still haven't explained exactly wheat you did to get your music on your new PC or where the files are located.
iTunes is very fussy about the exact location and name of files and folders and it it will loose them if there is any change after you added them to iTunes.
Which drive had you music files at the moment and what is the name the music folder?
If you look on the advanced tab in itunes preferences, what is the location of the iTunes Music folder and is it the same as the folder containing your music?
Is your itunes library file (iTunes Library.itl) in Music\iTunes or have you put it somewhere else using a shift key start.
Did you start with an empty iTunes library on the new PC and add your music files using File>>Add folder to library, or did you do something else?
I think you probably need to delete all the tracks from your library and then add them again with File>>add folder to library, but I can't be sure without understanding exactly what you have done.

  • When i download mixtapes itunes  cannot locate the songs

i download free mixtapes off datpiff and when they download they open a folder in my documents, when i open the song they open on itunes. Lately they will download but when i close the folder i opened them from itunes cannot locate the songs and i cant put them on my iphone.

    Kbick,  Glad it helped.
By the way, if you don't want to clutter your desktop, you can put them into your iTunes Media folder.  The important thing is to make sure you are using the extracted files, not the ones in the Zip folder.
    Enjoy the music!

  • ITunes cannot Location many songs even though they have not moved

I recently noticed that, locations of many songs in iTunes is showing up incorrectly, due to which its playcount, ratings etc. don't sync with my iPhone/iPad. For example
When location of original song is in folder "/Users/SiMac/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music by Artists/Devan/", and
The song is still there in the above folder
However, iTunes now shows the location as "file://localhost/Users/SiMac/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music by Artists/Devan/"
Every time I double the song, iTunes shows up a dialog asking whether I want to locate it, because it doesn't know what the folder shown above in (3) above means.
Is there a way to fix this en mass, because I have thousands of songs, which show up misplaced like above. There is no way in **** for me to locate song by song.

  • Just got message that iTunes cannot locate 2382 songs. I see them, but I don't seem to be able to "recover" them. How do I locate them in a block versus one at a time?

I installed Nokia PC Suite software  including a music player. I opened iTunes so that I could transfer music to my mobile phone. My iTunes response was that it could not locate my music files. So, I uninstalled all of my Nokia software, and restarted iTunes. My music list comes up, but when I try to play a tune, I get the message that iTunes cannot locate my music files, and asks me if I want to locate them. When I answer, it lets me locate the music one song at a time. How do I get iTunes to "locate" the entire file in one block action?.

  • After upgrading to the latest itunes, itunes cannot locate my songs

After upgrading to the newest itunes, itunes cannot locate all my music, which is located on an external hard drive. The only solution I can think is to go through each song individually and "find" it on my external hard drive. With 78000 songs, this is obviously not feasible. Is there some simple solution? I don't want to have to just delete the entire itunes library and reload the music on my hard drive, because I have all the songs just the way I want them, with ratings, info, album art, and corrected song titles and album orders, and I will lose all that, right? Please help if you can.

I figured this out - this might be of great help to some people who have the same problem. I do not know how, but somehow my external hard drive got renamed to a different drive letter, from E to F. That's why itunes wasn't recognizing my songs, because there was a new file path name. Here's a microsoft XP tutorial on how to change drive letters if this happens to you:

  • Files in itunes media folder but itunes cant locate

All my music is in my ITunes Media - Music folder, but there is exclamation points beside 4,000+ songs. How can i locate all the files at once? (When I use the locate the rest of the  media option, it says it can't find the files!) Help!!!

I was hoping to compare an actual path with where iTunes thought the file should be but you haven't supplied a correspondiing location. Typically when all music can't be found the cause is that iTunes has the layout of the library wrong. Here is an older thread on the topic..
From what you said earlier it would seem the tracks are where they are supposed to be... One trick that might work in such circumstances is to change the media folder under Edit > Preferences > Advanced to say the iTunes folder, DO NOT CONSOLIDATE, then change it back to iTunes/iTunes Media, again DO NOT CONSOLIDATE.
If that still doesn't work you can see what luck my FindTracks script has in locating the elusive files.

  • HT1711 MacBook cant locate a song I have purchased

I cant find the file to a song I have purchased off an album. How do I recover this file? Do I have to purchase the song again?

If you are in a country where you can re-download music, and if it's still in the store, then you should be able to re-download it via the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your Mac's iTunes. If it shows as 'downloaded' under that link then do you still have it listed in your iTunes library i.e. where you would click on it to play it ? If you do then deleting it from there should change 'downloaded' to a cloud symbol allowing you to re-download it.
If you aren't in a country where you can re-download music, or if it's no longer in the store, then you will need to copy it back from your backup of your downloads

  • HT203175 unable to update itunes cant locate to correct msi file

I have been unable to update of uninstall and reinstall as I keep getting an error message indicating that the iTunes.msi file is not correct, how do I reinstall the software, at this point I no longer have access to iTunes?

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get aCode 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Can't locate original song files from iTunes

I purchased songs from iTunes & cant locate original files on my computer/iPod.  Searched harddrive, recycle bin, etc.  When you click on song title in library, states cannot locate original files and asks me to locate.  Yet when I try to redownload from iTunes, it shows I purchased it but states already downloaded and won't let me download again.  I even tried to purchase again and it won't let me. How do I get these back?

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .
