ITunes causes Macbook Pro not to shut down

Dears,
For sometime now I am not able to shut down my mbp without holding the power bottom down. I tried so many things, restored lion (performance enhanced but still won't shot down), then i started deleting app thinking it could be the reason until when I deleted iTunes the problem is gone and i am finally able to shut down the machine normally. when i installed iTunes again the problem came back again!!!
any advice??
thanks

my MacBookPro recently started to have problems shutting down too... Its the Core 2 Duo model, and I only have this problem when shutting down from the windoze side...
I think there may be something to dismounting the network drives though... I unplug a ton of peripherals including an external display, as well as network drives and such...
I also noticed that the clock started losing its place... Network time has to update it on every startup after switching from OSX to XP and vice versa. Maybe this can clue someone in to a solution... Haven't tried the PRAM zap yet.. I hear OSX doesn't like that too much though- so I'm hesitant.

  • My Macbook Pro won't shut down or restart without forcing shut down. Hangs on grey screen. iTunes not recognizing iPod.

    HELP!!!
Here are the specs of my machine:
    2011 13.3" MacBook Pro
    4 GB Ram/320 GB HD
For the past several months my MacBook Pro refuses to shut down or restart without holding down the power button. Whenever I choose to restart or shut down the computer, it will hang on a grey screen. I have even tried letting it hang for an hour, and it still won't shut down. I notice that once in a while it will retart or shut down correctly if I had not used opened iTunes since turning it on. However, even manually closing iTunes before shutting down or restarting does not solve the problem. It seems as though it only shuts down if iTunes was not used since restarting the computer. Is this a registry error? Do I need to reinstall iTunes? I noticed this problem began happening after I uninstalled Kaspersky Virus Scanner, could that be the problem as well? Also, I cannot guarantee that the problem is only associated with iTunes. I just noticed that one of the few times it shut down or restarted correctly, iTunes coincidentally had not been used. Also, this problem started happening while I was still using Lion and has continued despite upgrading to Mountain Lion.
Also, whenever I update my iPod through iTunes, it won't eject properly, and a transparent icon of the iPod displays on the screen even after I have removed it from the USB port. Furthermore, the iPod will only be recognized by iTunes and will only be updated the first time I plug it in. After removing it and plugging it back in, it won't recognize or update the device unless I shut down and restart the computer. I have the latest addition of iTunes. I also have two iPods, one 80 GB Classic, and one 8 GB Nano, and I have the same problem with both.
I have AppleCare. Should I take my macbook to the genius bar?
Applications I normally use are Word, Safari, FireFox, iTunes, FinalDraft, Photo Booth, Notes, Mail, App Store, etc. No real heavy lifting.
Any feedback would be very much appreciated. :-)
    Thank you everyone!!

    I have this question too.

  • My macbook pro (late 2008) shuts down but battery is at 25-30%

My macbook pro (late 2008) shuts down but battery is at 25-30% and I don't get a low power warning box before this happens.  This only happens when the power chord is not connected, and it restarts with no problems once I put the power chord in. Does this mean I need a new battery, or is it an indication of something else? Using osx 10.5.8

Mine is Unibody 15" MBP late 2008, with the exact problem as yours. It can be a sudden shut down at 25-32%, or, after upgrading to OS 10.7.2, can be hang all of sudden on battery power.
Condition on, "Replace Soon". From 4.5 - 6 hours when new, goes down to 1 - 2 hours on discrete graphics.
But after 'abusing' it for the first year in the heat of Jakarta's climate in a non AC room when doing a video editing, before moving back to a comfort AC room at home sweet home, the battery performance is still top notch comparing to other kind than Apple. Also, it caused me to replace the right fan, after a lot of hard work on that first year. Oh, and by the way, I regularly done the battery calibration, at least once or twice between 3-6 months.

My Macbook Pro just randomly shuts down and I have to plug it into power to be able to turn it back on. Anybody got any suggestions?

Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Is the little LED on your adapter's MagSafe plug glowing when it's connected? What color?
It sounds as though your battery is drained and the adapter isn't charging it. Try resetting the SMC:

That may start the battery charging again.

  • 13" MacBook Pro (late 2012) shuts down randomly

Mac book pro 13" retina shuts down randomly and without warning. The screen goes black and it takes several minutes before it will start back up.
I've taken my mac book pro 13" retina to the genius bar, twice. The first time I was told to remove some software, which I did and the computer continues to randomly shut down. The second time I was told to make sure that I have at least 12 GB of storage available, which I made happen and the computer continues to shut down.
What I can tell you, and what I've told genius bar, is:
The shut down happens when it is either plugged in or not. The shut downs happen toward the middle of the day when the computer gets warm. It is not hot, just warm. If I keep a external fan pointed at it all day I do not get any shut downs. I've spend almost a full day at genius bar and I am looking for some help/approach/information that would help us solve this problem.
    Computer Info:
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012)
Yosemtie 10.10.1. Note I was running the latest Mavericks and had the problem too. The upgrade did not help.
    Thank you.

Their tests are superior to the AHT and so I am surprised that they did not pick up on any hardware faults.  The responses that you say they gave you are in my opinion, to be charitable, worthless.  The fact is that the quality of the technicians at a genius bar are not consistent, some being better than others.
If I were in your position, I would firmly but politely demand the the MBP be serviced so that the AHT not produce that error any more.  If need be, send the MBP to a repair facility where more experienced personnel can work on it.  If you have Apple care, there should be no charge.
    Ciao.

  • My MacBook Pro Won't Shut Down (Sometimes)

I was wondering if anyone has experienced the same problem as me, I have searched the discussions on here and on Google for solutions but can't seem to find any.
I have a MacBook Pro (early 2011 model) - I have upgraded it to OS X Mountain Lion recently, but the problems with shutting down occured before that. When I open iTunes on my MacBook, then quit it and shut down the system, it won't seem to do it. It will bring up a grey screen with a spinning loading wheel and stay on that until the battery runs out or I hold down the power button and force a shut down.
I have tested this without opening iTunes on my Mac and it shuts down perfectly, and very quickly also. Has anyone found a solution to this or can suggest what I can do to resolve it? I can't get to an Apple store until September.
    Thank you.

  • MacBook Pro won't shut down. At all.

I have been googling this for days now. The only way I can shut down my core duo macbook pro is by holding down the power button. Using the restart and shutdown options in the menu don't work. At all.
When I try to click shut down nothing happens, I have tried waiting as long as an hour and it doesn't quit any applications or shut down.
I have tried quitting all open applications first, still no luck. I have tried resetting the PRAM, no luck.
I need to update the firmware to version 1.2 and I can't because the MBP won't shutdown by itself and a hard reboot won't let me upgrade the firmware.
    Please help!
    Ben

I am new the forums, i read a lot but don't post. but i think this might be something that will help the shutdown/restart problems. I have recently encountered the same problem and i found that it might be connected to airport wireless. the only thing that i started doing differently was using my airport and that is when i started having the trouble. if i turn off airport before i shutdown/restart then it will proceed with no problems, but if i keep it on then i get the blue screen of death that goes no where. give it a shot and let me know if it works for you. it is a bandaid at least until apple gets their airport troubles fixed.

  • MacBook pro won't shut down only after sync with iTunes?

MacBook pro stays on blue screen with spinning gear when I try to shut down only if I have synced either an iPhone or iPad with iTunes. If i have not synced with iTunes the shut is ok.
Any suggestions would be great :)

I had the same problem and just fixed it.
    What I did:
    - Launch Disk Utility > Select Macintosh HD > Verify Disk
Let the Verify run until it's done
    - If you are seeing any error try the Repair disk
It's possible you need to restart (holding cmd+r while restarting)
    - Next I did a verify disk permissions and a repair disk permissions
    - reboot
After this the shutdown issue was gone!
Hope this solves your problem as well.

Pages died today. Just downloaded the latest update 2 days ago. Last night shutting down my very new MacBook Pro Retina, Pages stopped shut down. Today Pages will not open, all my Pages docs cannot open. Help please! Anybody have a fix?

You probably have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 in your Applications folder, will open Pages '09 files but will alter/damage them. It can not open Pages '08 files.
Pages '08/'09 in your Applications/iWork folder which can not open Pages 5 files.
When you were shutting down you probably had an unsaved document open.
You probably are opening the wrong versions of Pages to open the wrong document format.
Pages 5 has had over 90+ features removed.
Most users are going back to Pages 09 whilst Apple sorts this out.
