ITunes causing whole system to freeze?

Hi
There are a lot of questions on this forum which are similar to this, but I have not found one that actually replicates the same problem in the same conditions.
Today I was listening to iTunes and had a bunch of other applications open. For no apparent reason, the whole system froze up on me. By this I mean: the mouse no longer responds, keyboard no longer responds, the colon that flashes the seconds in the clock stops flashing (I have that turned on so that I can see when the machine is really frozen), and all the keyboard-shortcuts like Option-Command-Esc (Forced Quit dialog) or Ctrl-Eject fail to work. Even the Ctrl-Command-Power doesn't work (for forced Restart): instead I have to hold the power button for a few seconds and the computer shuts down, but does not restart. (This is what I mean by the 'whole system freezing'). There is no warning, no beachball spinning, and the G5 does not even seem particularly hot (the fans were not blowing hard). So I am completely at a loss to understand what's going on.
Thinking this was a one-off event, I restarted, ran a "Verify permissions" and "Repair permissions" (was this a mistake?) and ran a few applications (Mail, Safari) all of which worked fine. Then I opened iTunes again. It opened OK. I then closed the window, which worked. Then I quit iTunes. This caused the whole system to freeze again, exactly as before.
I have repeated this cycle a couple of times. iTunes will open, will even start playing a song, but on Quit the whole system freezes.
More recently I found that the system froze with iTunes just playing a song.
What then happened was that I looked for help on this forum, found too many cases of iTunes doing strange things but none with my configuration, and thought (perhaps recklessly) that I should update iTunes (from 6.0.4 to 6.0.5). This seemed to work perfectly. Except when I opened it, and played a song, within seconds the whole freezing thing happened again, exactly as before.
So, apart from giving up on listening to music in the office, what is to be done? I am able to run other applications OK (I'm writing this within Safari), so it seems to be an iTunes related problem. I had no unusual devices connected (in fact nothing except keyboard, mouse, monitor), and no iPod connected.
Does anyone know what to do about this?
(I'm using a Power-PC based dual G5 which is only about 15 months old).
Thanks in advance.

Just an update (I'm answering my own post) in case anyone else has this issue:
I managed to get iTunes to stop causing hard crashes. I went through the repair disk procedure outlined here:
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
Including running Yasu at the end with most of the boxes ticked, to clean caches thoroughly.
And I also trashed all the iTunes preferences files. The first time you run iTunes after this you have to answer some questions (as it resets the prefs) but you can always restore your settings manually afterwards.
So far so good -- iTunes launches, runs, and quits without crashing the system.
I guess this might not have been an issue with iTunes itself. The damage was probably done when the first crash happened and I had to use the power button to shut down. I still don't understand what caused the first crash, though, and Yasu seems to have deleted the panic log so I'll never know.

  • Use of java application w/ Swing component causes Win95 system to freeze

    Hi All,
Until yesterday, we were having a major problem that whenever we ran a java applet or application that used Swing, the Windows 95 systems would freeze tight and require a reboot.
I had tried everything from loading the J2RE, Windows Sockets 2, J2SDK, none of which helped with the problem.
What we found out yesterday is the Windows 95 machines that were freezing didn't have DirectX on them, and that when DirectX 8.0a was installed, the freezing problem went away.
Just thought I'd share my success if anyone else is now struggling through the same items.
    Bruce

    hii,

  • I've updated to iTunes 11.02 and on start up I get Error 42110 causing the whole system to freeze a minute after or so. HELP!

Is a consistent problem even starting iTunes in Safe Mode.
I have to reboot the computer everytime and is causing system problems.
I've tryied ALL troubleshooting available so far and no solution:
    Reinstalled iTunes
    Reloaded my iTunes Library
    Deauthorized Computer, and authorized again.
Started Windows with another user account and ran iTunes.
    Checked for viruses.
    Checked firewall.
Logged in with, and without, Interet dissabled.
    Curious note:
It started when I logged in to iTunes 5 days ago and showed a couple of message windows. One was the apple id log in and showed and email address I did not recognize.  No one has access to my computer as there is no people around it but me. (really no chance of that happening).
Most frustrating is that I can't upload music to my iPod Touch 2G.
    HELP!
    Any ideas?

  • ITunes Store causing whole program to freeze on Windows 7 (64-bit)

So I installed iTunes 10.5 for Windows 7 (64-bit) and cannot open it up properly: the iTunes Store makes the entire program freeze up. I've cleared the DNS cache, closed my firewall, changed proxy settings, and iTunes it still unusable. What am I missing exactly? This is enough to tear the hair out of my head...

I can get it running if I run it in XP Mode, but I still don't have access to the Store...nobody has any ideas?

  • HT204406 When itunes is open on my pc and iTunes match begins to run, the whole system then freezes and I have to close itunes. it then takes ages for itunes to reopen whlist it check my diary. What can I do?

I am having major problems with itunes match. I cannot operate it from my pc as every time it tries to get the information itunes stops responding and shuts down. It then can take 15 minutes of more to reopen itunes as it check my library. I have reinstalled itunes and my software is up to date. It is intensly irritating as I have to remember to tune match off or else I cannot do anything in itunes. Any ideas or do I just tell Apple I want my money back?

If I am persistent and keep tapping the download icon then one by one I can download the entire album but it normally takes a few hours/days. Anyone else had this?

  • ITunes causing cascade system failure.

This is an issue that has been going on for several months, so through several updates of both OS and iTunes. The issue is when items are added to the iTunes library. The adding starts as normal, but then iTunes just freezes and you get the spinning beach-ball. At this moment all other applications running continue without issue in the background - no matter how long it's left. I've left it in this state for up to 8 hours, but the spinning beach-ball doesn't stop.
However, should I switch to any other application, the switch happens without issue, but as soon as I attempt any action within that application (such as quitting, closing a window, etc.) then it too freezes and you get the spinning beach-ball. No matter which application you switch to, you get exactly the same phenomena occurring. It is impossible to force-quit any application because if you select the Apple menu, you get the menu, but when you select "Force Quit", the Finder then freezes and you get spinning beach-ball. If you try Alt-Cmd-Esc, if the active application has frozen then this key input produces nothing. If the active application is running, then the Alt-Cmd-Esc key combination will kill it (ie. freeze and spinning beach-ball).
If you select the any application in the dock, then that application stays highlighted (dark) and then the dock becomes unresponsive. Once several applications have gone this way, if you hover the mouse over the menu items (top-right), one by one they freeze and the mouse becomes a spinning beach-ball (even without switching to them or clicking on them). After a few minutes, the blinking dividers on the clock stop and a few minutes later the mouse stops accepting any input.
Once iTunes has failed, there is nothing to stop everything from following suit. The only way out is to hold the power button in and restart.
As I said, it's been going on for several months (could even be years). Initially it seemed completely random and it wasn't until I turned off automatic podcast updates within iTunes that it stopped happening randomly. But it still happens when I add (usually by drag/drop) more than one item into iTunes.
I seriously doubt anyone out there will have a clue as to what's going on. But if anyone could shed any light, I'd appreciate it. But please - no basics (ie. reinstall, update, reset NVRAM/SMU, repair permissions etc.), I've done all that.
    Thanks.

Same problem. Now I cannot use itunes at all. Locks up computer and I have to hold power button to restart.

  • NFS causes whole system hang

I have a home server that I just set up recently that runs Arch linux.  It exports a couple of external hard drives via NFS.  I have been mouting them with autofs on my laptop.  However, after several hours the entire system completely hangs up.  I originally thought it had something to do with the rpc-gssd daemon that the NFS wiki page recommends running as it was dying in a strange way and I thought that may have been related to the hang ups.  After implementing a different workaround (blacklist rpcsec_gss_krb5) and disabling rpc-gssd, I am still having the same hang issue.
    Here is what happens:
I boot up my computer, start Firefox, Thunderbird, various terminals, etc.  I mount the NFS share with autofs by opening up the /media/net/atomic/qx2_data directory.  After a while, the NFS mounts in Thunar start disappering momentarily.  Then a little while later the system completely hangs and requires a hard reboot.  The end of the log from journalctl is posted below.
Right now I have disabled autofs and I will only mount the drives on the server via SFTP to avoid this problem, but I would really like to get this debugged.  Also, this is not likely related to any sort of a connection issue as both computers are hardwired to the same Gigabit Ethernet switch.
Any ideas on what might be going on here?

Hi Alex - autofs mounts on demand/request, and unmounts a filesystem after 10 minutes of non-use by default.  If you set the timeout to zero (auto.master), it disables this timeout.  If this is an NFSv4 umount bug, then I don't think this will help you as you'll have to umount at some stage (e.g. shutting down).

  • Import seems to cause whole-system crash

Attempting to import photos via an SD card-reader crashes the entire system, not just the app. I spent yesterday fidgeting around in Safe Mode, trying to send the white screen of death back to its cave so I can use my computer again. I've found plenty of app-crash threads, but has anyone else had their entire computer crash like this? Were you able to fix it?
Thanks for any help you're able to give.

  • Using Acrobat Pro XI to open PDF causes system to freeze.

Frequently, when I open a PDF document (double click the PDF file), my Adobe Acrobat Pro XI ver. 11.0.03, (and X before) causes my system to freeze (hourglass icon runs for up to 30 seconds) not allowing me to perform any other command, and less frequently causes Adobe Acrobat Pro XI to quit.  Following the unexpected quit, Windows Error Reporting takes over and I am directed to Windows for a solution (http://wer.microsoft.com/responses/Response.aspx/5044/en-us/5.1.2600.2.00010100.3.0?SGD=83 458a54-94bd-481a-834b-9713fc92dccf&iBucketTable=1&iBucket=-692234318&BucketHash=e4711a21f7 5b0d1473d68945071e3721), and the solution always directs me to install Adobe Reader XI (11.0.03) (http://get.adobe.com/reader/).  This occurs on a daily basis.  Should I install Adobe Reader even though I have Adobe Acrobat Pro XI installed?  Any ideas why my system hangs or why Adobe Acrobat Pro XI quits unexpectedly?  My system is a Win XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 3 with all the latest updates installed; 3 GB Ram and Intel Core2 Duo CPU T5670 @ 1.80 GHz, Dell Vostro 2510.  I have Norton Anti Virus and I have performed a nightly full system virus scan, and I have performed a deep system virus scan.  There are no viruses.

Bill@VT: Thanks for the reply.  I haven't tried the suggested steps, but will shortly.  Will let you know what occurs.

  • Google Chrome causing system to freeze

Google Chrome has been sporadically causing my system to freeze. It may work fine for a few days, or for less than twenty-four hours. Without warning, the browser will suddenly begin reading and waiting on its cache, and become unresponsive. When I try to force quit the application, the system locks up and Finder will freeze but imputs are still responsive, causing me to have to do a hard reboot. Once rebooted, Spotlight re-indexes my hard drive [which I believe is a separate issue (mdworker unable to talk to lsboxd)]. This only occurs with Google Chrome and is not replicable with other browsers or applications.
I have cleared all caches and reset my PRAM and SMC controller, but the issue persists. Any thoughts?

There are several "shared libraries" in the Extensions folder. There is also "Shared Library Manager" (and "Shared Library Manager PPC") which are not shared libraries themselves, but provides support for using shared libraries. Since you know the extensions, can you post back with their exact file names?

  • ITunes causing Windows to restart

I seem to have an issue at the moment with iTunes causing sudden system restarts quite regularly - usually when I am browsing the store. It seems to date back to when they added all the coverflow to each of the categories. It's not related to any recent Itunes update and only iTunes does it; no other program.
    Anyone else getting this?

Also could it be my Vbios is somehow corrupted or causing this as it always seems to happen when windows is booting up before I have access to my machine right when it would be accessing the vBios?
    Nope

Ok so if anyone ends up having this rediculously confusing problem like I did allow me to say, simply unplug your other monitors from your computer and then run the Nvidia driver software, works every time now. Only 1 monitor can be plugged in at one time while running the driver updates.

  • System Keeps Freezing

    Hi Guys
I really need some help with this as it's really starting to wreck my brain. My iMac is running the latest software version 10.6.8 but what has started to happen is that if I have anymore then say 3 different programs open the whole system just freezes and it stays like that untill I force it to turn off by holding the power button. I'm thinking the maybe Safari is behind it all because it always seems to do it when Safari is open. I lost about 4 hours work of work yesterday and well lets just say some words were said to my iMac that I taught I'd never say to an Apple product. Has this happened to anyone else and if so how did you go about fixing it so that you can actually rely on it again. Seriously as I'm writing this I have no idea if I'll even get to post it.
Here are the specs of my iMac: 27" iMac, 2.8GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Oh and it doesn't even have to have that many programs open. I was on youtube this evening and the only thing that was going was Finder and Safari and all I did was while a video was playing clicked on a different video and well it's like Safari paniced and just froze. Seriously what's going on with it, please guys I would be thankful for any help or advise with this.
    All the best

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
