Itunes charged credit card instead of gift card for own ipod app (Australia)

I have sufficient credit on my gift card. The T&C conditions of the gift card allow the purchase for my own ipod. Why then was my credit card charged? This has not happened before as all other purchases came off of the gift card including purchases made after the app was bought. Thanks for your help!

Same problem. So I contacted apple with this question:
My main iTunes account has credit (because I've redeemed gift cards on it) but when I try to purchase anything in the store, it asks for a credit card.
I have another iTunes account that has credit and a credit card, and anytime I buy anything, it bills my credit card.
How do I purchase using the iTunes credit that is on my account? I don't want anything billed to my credit card, so I just haven't been buying anything on iTunes. But there are some apps for my iPod Touch that I'd really like to be able to purchase.
Thanks!
And received this reply:
...I understand that you are asked for billing information even though you have store credit. I can certainly appreciate you would like some assistance, and I would be more than happy to help you out with this today.
I'm sorry you weren't able to make a purchase using your store credit. To purchase items on the iTunes Store with your store credit, your account information in your user profile needs to be corrected. I'll walk you through this process to get you back up and running in no time.
1) Visit the My Apple ID website at:
http://appleid.apple.com
2) If the site is not displayed in your preferred language, click the Change Language link in the upper-right corner, type the name of your language in the field that appears, then click the Save button.
3) Click the "Manage your account" link.
4) Type your iTunes Store account name (which is your Apple ID) in the Apple ID field, type your password in the password field, then click the Sign In button.
5) Click "Addresses" in the column on the left. If you have multiple shipping addresses, remove any out-of-date or duplicate addresses by clicking Delete. Also, make sure the state or province field is filled out correctly for each address. To edit an address, click Edit. Edit all of your shipping addresses and make sure the appropriate state is selected in the State drop-down menus.
6) Now click "Phone Numbers" on the left. The area codes should be in the area code fields and the phone numbers should be in the phone number fields. If an area code is missing, or if it is in a phone number field, your account information may not save properly.
7) Make any other necessary corrections, then click the Save Changes button.
8) Click Log out in the upper-right corner.
When you make your next purchase on the iTunes Store, you will be asked to review your billing information. At this point, you can change your information or simply click Done at the bottom of the screen to proceed. Once you click Done, you should be able to purchase on the iTunes Store using your store credit.
And it worked the next time I bought an app on my iPod Touch! It was weird that it had my "Primary Address" and "Shipping Address" - though they were the same, I deleted my shipping address, and moved my "evening" phone into the "mobile" phone section, hit save, and problem solved. Weird that it was an address thing (I'm assuming) - perhaps the multiple addresses confused the billing process. It didn't ask to review my billing info when I bought something, but it used my store credit. Yay!
Hope this helps!

  • ITunes Charged my CC Instead of Gift Card

    Hello,
A few days ago I had an iTunes balance of about $12.  I purchased a few apps via the app store and came across a blogging app that I thought would be perfect for my husband, since he's an avid Blogger.  It was a $2.99 app.  So, I gifted it to him.  However, iTunes did NOT charge my iTunes balance as I expected, but instead charged my debit card that was on file.  This would've been fine except my debit card didn't have sufficient funds on it to cover the purchase.  The $2.99 charge went through anyways and I was hit with a $35 overdraft fee by my bank.
At no time while gifting this app did I get a pop up confirmation that iTunes would charge my debit card.  Everything I'd previously purchased was debited from my iTunes balance so I assumed this gifted app would too.  Not so.  So, I emailed iTunes 2 days ago (with an auto reply promising I'd get a reply within 24 hours and I still haven't gotten a reply) explaining what happened and stating that I do NOT want the gifted app taken away from the person I bought it for, I just want iTunes to credit my debit card the $2.99 and deduct the purchase from my iTunes balance (I'm keeping a balance of $3.13 on my iTunes account specifically for this purpose).  That way, if they credit me, I can call my bank and state the charge was an error so (hopefully) they can credit me the $35 non-sufficient funds fee.
I came across a forum thread while looking up info about this and one person stated that iTunes gift card balances can't be used to gift apps, songs, movies, etc but can only be used to purchase apps, songs, movies, etc for the account holder.  Is this true?  I really hope not because if it is I'm pretty much screwed and charged a $35 fee over a $2.99 purchase.  Also, if this is true, WHY doesn't Apple/iTunes state this before someone gifts something?  Why didn't I get a pop up confirmation?  What are the chances Apple/iTunes will credit me the $2.99 and deduct it from my iTunes balance?  It's the only way I can have that $35 fee reversed.  I really don't want to have to dispute the charge with my bank because I happen to like the ability to purchase things on my phone once in a while.  I did take my debit card off my iTunes account.  From now on I'll ONLY purchase things with iTunes cards...I don't want to risk this happening again.

Well seeing as I've only had my iPhone for a few months, and had never used iTunes before that, it's new to me.  Apple can't expect everyone to know all of their rules right off the bat.
So, in a nut shell, if and when I finally do get a reply from iTunes, the email will pretty much say "to bad, nothing we can do"?
*Edit: Thank you for the link.  When I sent the email to iTunes about this, I didn't know that.  I sent it as soon as I got the email recepit stating it was charged to my debit card.  Lesson learned.  I won't be having any type of currency associated with iTunes anymore unless it's an iTunes gift card.

  • Paying for itunes with a credit card instead of gift card

I currently have $ on an itunes gift card and this gift card's balance is on my itunes.  I got an email from Am. Ex. that if I use $5.00 on my credit card on itunes, I GET $5.00 for itunes.  Problem is, every time I download a song it comes off my gift card balance.  How do I change to the Am Ex credit card on file to pay for my songs instead of the gift card?

Really late on this, but just in case anyone has this question: anytime you "gift" something on the itunes store to someone else, it charges your credit card instead of your gift card. Simply send the "gift" to your own email (perhaps not associated with your apple ID) and then just redeem the code it sends you in your itunes account

  • HT201359 How can I use a credit card instead of gift card in the iTunes store

Amex is running a special where you get $5 back on a $5 purchase or more at the iTunes store.  I have a gift card balance on the account and wanted to use my credit card for the promotion.  Anyone know how to do this?

The work around.. would be to order a gift, then redeem the gift yourself. As gifts can not be paid for by your store credit.

  • Pay with Credit Card Instead of Gift Card?

I have already credited my iTunes account with a gift card and there is still a balance on it. Is there any way that I can choose to pay with my credit card instead of my gift card balance? Thanks for any help!

That's unfortunate. Is there any way that I can temporarily clear my balance somehow? American Express is doing a promotion for free songs on iTunes but you have to pay with your AmEx card in order to get the songs for free. So, if I currently have a gift card balance then I would have to burn through that first in order for iTunes to charge my AmEx. Any one have any experience trying to do this?

  • Can I use my credit card instead of gift cards to purchase apps/in-app content?

I downloaded Global War a few weeks ago and now there is in-app content that I want to buy but everytime I try to purchase it, there is a message that pops up saying "Your purchase could not be completed" then another following message saying "Sorry... In-App Purchase Failed: Cannot connect to iTunes Store". How do I fix that? The content costs $9.99 but I only have 41 cents in my account, do I have to buy a gift card to get more money in my account or can I use my credit card? Is that the reason why those messages are popping up?

If you mean for purchasing an iPad or other device from Apple then it might depend upon what country that you are in. For the US the Apple Store help page, http://store.apple.com/us/help/payments, has :
The Apple Online Store accepts a variety of payment methods. Click on a payment method below to find out more:
    Credit Cards or Debit Cards
    Wire Transfer
    Barclaycard Visa Cards
Apple Business Lease (AFS Commercial Credit)
    Apple Store Gift Card
Bill Me Later© (Consumer and Education Individuals)
Note: Bill Me Later©, business lease, wire transfers, cashier's checks, and money orders are ineligible payment methods for pickup items.
Some payment types are ineligible for orders shipping to multiple addresses. If you are using an ineligible payment type for an order shipping to multiple addresses, you will need to change the payment method, or ship your order to a single address.
Some customers may qualify for other forms of payment. Please call an Apple Store Specialist at 1-800-MY-APPLE for more information.

  • How can I charge my chinese iTunes account with a 25 euro gift card I bought in Germany?

How can I charge my chinese iTunes account with a 25 euro gift card I bought in Germany?  Thanks.

iTunes gift cards can only be used in the store in the country in which they are bought - so if you bought a German iTunes gift card then you will need a German iTunes account. If you haven't got a German iTunes account then do you know anybody with one who could give/sell it to ?

    No.
The credit is applied to the account, not the device.

  • HT2736 If I gift songs or a CD on iTunes will it take from my gift card balance or from my regular account?

If I gift songs or a CD on iTunes will it take from my gift card balance or from my regular account?

It'll take it from your credit card. Money redeemed from a gift card can't be spent on gifts or otherwise transferred to another iTunes Store account.

will apple credit to my account gift card for recycling program

If you mean the program Apple runs with partner companies to send in some computers and iOS devices, you will get an Apple Store gift card for the value. I don't know what you mean by "credit to your account", but this program has nothing to do with the iTunes Store. Apple explains the program, at least as it's constitued in the US, here:

If that doesn't answer your question, please post back and clarify.
