ITunes closes while updating iPod

Everytime I hook up my iPod mini to update it, iTunes closes and Windows asks to send an error report. Yeah. I need help. It's not the iPod. I tried it on my friend's PC and it loaded songs on the iPod just fine. (I'm now stuck with an iPod full of pop music...) I've reinstalled iTunes like twice and I don't know what to do next.
(iTunes works fine until I hook the stupid iPod up...)

I am having the same problem and it did not start until after I updated to the latest version. Can anybody help?

can anybody help me with this problem my itunes always crashes while im in the middle of updating my ipod

Try using the iPod software updater to restore settings to factory default and then upload all you music back onto it.
If that doesn't work, try to post some more details about it crashing; Does the iPod lock up your system? Does iTunes lock up? Does iTunes shut down?

  • ITunes froze while updating iPod firmware...

I was trying to install the latest version of software on my iPod touch (4gen) and it's frozen halfway through. My iPod has a little loading bar on it, as does iTunes, both are maybe a third of the way through and have been stuck on the exact same spot for a good hour now. iTunes says it's still running, and I really don't want to have to unplug it and have to restore it, is there anything I can do?

okay, force quit iTunes, now after about 5 minutes its done restoring, now its putting the old software back on
    hope this comes out ok

while updating ipod touch 4 i got an error message now stuck with apple symbol and empty bar. can i restart ipod?

    - What was the error message?
    - Try closing iTunes and then disconnect the iPod from the computer. Then reconnect the iPod.  If the iPod shows in iTunes then you can try again.  However, You should try to resolve the error message first.
    - If iTunes does not see the iPod try reetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - I recommend that you come back with the what the error message said and the condition of the iPod and if it is visible in iTunes.

    hi j.block!
hmmmmmmmmmmm. one other thing that might be worth a try if all else fails. i have once seen something like this turn out to be caused by a really kinky version of this issue:
iTunes: "privileges" or "permissions" issue when importing audio CD or adding music to library
... where the permissions were odd on the ipod itself ... but i've only seen that happen once. it's probably worth checking on only if nothing else seems to be working for you.

It happen to me several times, I just simply wait until it is out of battery and connect it to my itunes and it will show up in my computer. if the problem cannot be solved in this way, you can connect it to computer after several days of running out of battery and it may work. I know it is a little bit stupid idea, but it did work on my itouch

  • Itunes Error After Updating Ipod

I'm having trouble with Itunes - after it updates the Ipod it gives a fatal error ("can't read memory"). If I click "OK" Itunes closes. It does appear to be updating the Ipod.
Here's the basics of what I have:
-ipod model MA146LL (5th gen video)
    -Windows
    -Version 1.2.1 (on ipod)
    Itunes
    -7.0.2.16
Here's the thing that caused the problem:
-Plugged in ipod to computer via usb
    -It auto-launched itunes
-told me an upgrade was available for my ipod - do i want to install 1.2.1 I said yes.
-Updated the ipod with new firmware, and get error message in itunes
Here's the things I've tried to fix it:
-checked ipod and it had 1.2.1 as version
-unplugged ipod from computer, reconnected, it launched itunes, updated ipod and gave error message
    -rebooted computer - same error
-did regsvr32 on file in program files\itunes (something I found while searching discussion groups) - same error
-reset ipod and tried again - same error
-repaired itunes (via add/remove programs) and rebooted - same error
-validated that it actually is updating the ipod (is, removed a few songs and it did)
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Nope, no plug-ins.
I figured it out - here's the story:
I realized that although I got a fatal message, iTunes was still there, and as long as I didn't hit the OK on the message, I could still work in iTunes (I realized this could have screwed things up worse...but...). I Restored the Ipod. Got the same error. Even rebooted the machine and reset the ipod again. Same error.
Then I figured, forget it, I'll just use it with the error message. But, now that I restored my ipod I noticed the Contacts were blank (I'm synching with MS Outlook Contacts). I tried updating the ipod again, couldn't get the contacts. Then I remembered that since getting this new machine my contacts have been screwy in Outlook (click To: to get address list and it can't find it). I fixed that (removed the Outlook address book service and re-added). Went back to itunes to sync and it synched the contacts just fine.
And ... it no longer gives me the error message. So, the error with MS Outlook contacts is what the problem was all along. I'm thinkin.
Thanks for your time and quick reply....

  • Itunes will not update ipod

I have added a large amount of music ti itunes, but every time i try and update this onto my ipod i get an error message from itunes. unknown error(-69). has anyone had this before, if so what can I do. I have restored ipod to factory setting but still have the same problem. I have reduced the amount of songs I try and transfer, still the same.
could this be to do with he new itunes what can i do????

    hi Aubrey!
i will have my itunes up. then plug in my ipod and it says updating ipod but when it says it is okay to disconnect still my ipod has 118 songs while my library has 176
hmmm. if Katie's suggestion about the ipod updater software doesn't pan out (it's certainly worth checking), maybe try investigating this possibility:

  • ITunes won't update iPod

iTunes works normally until i want to sync it to my iPod. Then it says the usual "updating iPod" message then freezes. Just iTunes freezes not anything else i'm doing.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I had this same problem when trying to rebuild my iPhoto and iTunes libraries after a hard drive failure. I was able to track the problem down to a few images, that for whatever the reason, would not sync over to the iPod. They looked fine in iPhoto and didn't appear to be corrupted, so I have no idea what was wrong with them. I discovered that this was the case because I was able to sync photos by manually selecting specific photo albums, but I was unable to sync my entire photo library.
Here's the process I used to figure out what images were at fault. For each film roll in my iPhoto library, I did the following:
    1. Created a temporary photo album with all of the images from that roll.
    2. Told iTunes to only sync specific photo albums, not the entire library.
    3. Selected the new temp film roll in iTunes for syncing.
    4. If the sync worked, I knew that film roll was not to blame.
    5. If I got the error, I knew that I had identified the correct roll. Then I did a one-by-one removal of images from the roll until the sync worked.
While this was a very tedious process, it did finally allow me to get my entire photo library to sync over. And, I was able to re-import the faulty images and get those to sync as well. But deleting them first and getting a fresh copy was definitely what was needed here.

  • ITunes 7 problem (updating iPod)

I keep my music (all of it classical) on my iPod, and I want it organized in as rational a way as possible (which is not wonderful, given the limited sorting possibilities allowed by iTunes, but I digress...)
When I mount the (new, video, 5G, 80 Gb) iPod, I can set the columns to those I actually want to see and choose to sort by composer. However, every time I restart or otherwise remount the iPod, the default view has been restored, and I have to go through this all over again.
Further, while the iPod is mounted and playing, I keep getting a dialog saying that the iPod cannot be updated, because "the required file is in use." Naturally, it does not tell me what file is in question, so there's no way I can see to fix this. I don't actually want the iPod to be updated in any way apart from the browser view, and have tried to set things up (not) to do this.
I tried trashing the preferences file, but that had no effect on this problem. Can anyone point me to a solution, or at least give me a hint about what file may be "in use" that is screwing things up?
    Thanks,
    Steve Anderson
PowerBook, PowerMac, XServe   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Others have reported the problem with defaulting on the view for iPods.
Classical music is underserved by the whole iTunes/tag/CDDB system (which in fairness to Apple they've inherited somewhat - I just wish they'd push to fix it).
My personal fix to it is to use Playlists - with a format of Composer | Work | Artist/Conductor | (year) | (Label)
With some repetition/omission as needed, and lots of abbreviation.
I appreciate that might not address your problem - but may provide a way of sidestepping it. Good luck regardless in finding a way forward
