ITunes content on iPod with 2 computers

I really do not understand what is going on with my iPod.  I normally get iTunes store content on my Mac at home.  However, today I did not do that and while at work on my PC downloaded a new TV show using iCloud.  I then tried to put this TV show on my iPod touch but got the strangest error message.  iTunes told me that this iPod was linked to another iTunes library (which it is, my Mac at home) and that if I wanted to transfer this content from my work computer, then I would have to link my iPod to this library.  Doing so  I am warned will wipe my iPod clean of all the other TV shows.
What is this error message all about?  Why can't I transfer a show I bought from Apple onto my iPod using my work computer without wiping my iPod clean?  Just exactly what is going on here?
Thank you for your help.

You can manage music and videos among different libraries/computers by:

Thank you for the link.  However, even if I follow the directions, and tell itunes that i will manage files manually, I still get the error message that my iPod is linked to another library and if I want to transfer over files from my second computer, Itunes will WIPE clean all the other content from my iPod.
VERY VERY frustrating.  I cannot use my new iPod with two computers.
WHY?

Once I homeshare all my computers, can I sync my ipod with any of them?  Or do I always have to sync using the same computer.

What kind of iPod do you have?
For most iPods you can click Manually manage music on the summary page in iTunes. Check out Apple's document -> Using iPad or iPod with multiple computers.

Have you updated iTunes on the computer?    If you updated your iPod! but not iTunes, you will have communication errors.
Have you backed up and updated your iPod?   You should back up regularly.   Update to keep your device working well with current iTunes.
Once you have iTunes working well on the computer and have a backup saved (find your back up time and date on your iPod in settings, or on the computer under the iTunes pull-down menu, under "Preferences", choose the Devices tab and look in the box for your backup.

  • Using my ipod with multiple computers: not the usual problem I think

I've searched the forum and various help documents but I couldn't find the answer to this.
I have a laptop at the office (work-related, so I don't have any of my music on it, just itunes) and my computer at home. Ideally I'd like to:
= keep my ipod automatically synced to my home computer
= be able to connect my ipod to my work laptop and play the music stored on it through itunes there, and also keep it charged and ready for the trip home.
It seems that the 'manually manage music and videos' setting travels with the ipod, rather than being stored on the computer's itunes installation. If I set it at work, so I can play music there, when I connect the ipod at home I have to reset it (and a few times when I did so the ipod started deleting everything because 'sync my music' was not checked, grrr).
I just want to set things up in a way so that when I connect my ipod at work it will let me play whatever songs I have there (without wanting to sync anything), and when I connect it at home it will automatically update it. It's simple enough, but I can't seem to figure out how to do it.
If I connect the ipod at work and press 'cancel' when the 'do you want to erase things' pops up, it doesn't try to change the settings, but at the same time it doesn't let me play music at all, everything is greyed out
does anybody have any idea? I don't want to resort to have to buy a usb power adapter just so that I can play my ipod at work without draining the battery...

Could it be because its an iPhone and not a true iPod???
    i doubt it.
actually, syncing an iPod Touch (or iPhone) with multiple computers is not recommended @ all. click here to find out what Apple has to say about it.
all i can think of, i you really must do that, is this:
to prevent a sync when plugging in the iPod - hold down the option and the command ( on a PC that would be the shift and ctrl ) keys when plugging in the ipod - keep pressing the keys until the iPod is listed under the devices list in iTunes. now you should be able to do what you want.
however, you do so @ your own peril, as the article above outlined.
alternatively, consider a setup such as this.
    good luck !

  • CompUSA USB 2.o Card, iTunes 7.02, iPod with Video Problem

I just purchased a new 80 gig iPod with video and had to upgrade my MDD Duak 1 Ghz for USB 2.0, as transfer in USB 1 takes far too long. I purchased a card from CompUSA (SKU 304244) which adds two external ports only. When I attempt to transfer files into the iPod it seems to function at the faster speed, but will then freeze on a file, not allowing me to eject the iPod or sometimes to even force quit iTunes. I have tried this several times and there is no consistency regarding how many files have transferred or their size as to when the freeze will occur.
I originally tried this without adding a driver (using OS X 10.4.8), then I added the one from the included disc - same results. I then re-installed the 10.4.8 updater thinking this might have a more recent driver, but things are still the same.
I don't have any other USB 2 devices to use to test the card.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Not all of the USB2 PCI cards out there are completely compatible with Mac as they claim to be.
I tried a two-port IOGear card that had that same problem.
Replace it with a 5 port (1 internal and 4 external) Belkin and it works just fine.
Someone has had a list somewhere of the ones that work best. I know that Belkin is one of the good brands to buy for loading a video iPod on a PowerMac. There are others, though.
You might find more on it in the video iPod board.

  • Multiple iPods with Multiple computers

I have two iPods and each syncs with a different machine. Each has a unique music library. What would happen if I switched iPods. i.e. plugging two different iPods into one machine? Will they somehow merge the libraries, or will iTunes just complain that I'm confused.
    Thanks,

Have a look at this article: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Also, before you connect an iPod that is currently linked to a different library, read this one: Using iPod with Multiple computers

  • Charging iPod with other computers

I'm planning on taking my iPod on a trip with me, but I don't want to take my computer. What's the procedure for charging the battery using friends' computers? I don't want to upload music or apps or photos or anything, I just want to charge the battery.

If they have iTunes on their computer it will tell you that your iPod is synced to another computer (assuming you are autosyncing) and ask if you want to sync with the new computer and erase everything on your iPod. Say no and the iPod will charge.
It would probably be easier to buy a wall charger.

  • I want to use my ipod with multiple computers

I use 3 computers for my music (office, home and laptop).  I want to put music on my ipod from all 3 computers.  I have an Ipod Classic - 160gb

    Hey 707dancinann,
Thanks for the question. To achieve this, you’ll want to manually manage the content on your device:
Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535
When manually managing content, you can add content from multiple libraries to your iPod or iPad. Even when manually managing music, some content may be available from only one library at time.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • IPod freezes iTunes, content on ipod disappeared, how to restore?

I synced my 120gb ipod classic today (newest itunes, windows 7) and i might have pulled out the cable too quickly or something, because now my itunes says "no music" and "no movies", even though it only has 389mb free, so all my data is on there but it wont recognize it. So i tried syncing it again, but when i plugged it in itunes froze and the ipod did not appear in itunes. It does recognize it, but freezes. I tried going to my computer and it shows up. when trying to access it, explorer freezes too. i disconnected and tried explorer one more time and was able to access the folder, but it was very slow.
I am able to right click it in "my computer" and choose format. Is this safe or is there another way? i dont even want to try to reinstall itunes incase i lose all my ratings and all that stuff (15000 songs) and i dont think itunes is the problem.
When i disconnect my ipod, itunes starts responding again at once, and it shows the ipod sync screen showing that 111gb is used but all in the "OTHER" category. It says it cant sync because the necessary/required folder was not found.
I've tried different usb ports, disk mode and another vista pc but it freezes itunes there too...
And if i should format in my computer what settings to choose (exFAT, 256kb, quick format etc all that stuff)?
I'm going on vacation soon and i need it:s:S

UPDATE: i think i know what caused it: i synced my ipod touch today before i did the classic. The touch (2g, 16gb) synced fine, but when i connected the classic it froze. I had not synced the touch for months so that has to be what caused it. Any ideas what to do? How to format without itunes?

  • ITunes successfully syncs iPod with no errors, but nothing shows up on iPod

I plug in my new 80g iPod to by synced, and iTunes "successfully" syncs the iPod.
I look on my iPod to see if the songs were transfered and my iPod is still completely blank!
So I plug in my iPod again to see if I can find a problem, and the "Capacity" bar on the bottom of the iPod screen in iTunes shows all my music and video file space as 'Other' data.
    What is going on here?
I tried to restore the iPod and the same thing happens.

    Hi!
I got the same problem since today.
My Ipod contains 74,37Gb in total and Itunes says 56,6 PHOTOS, 61,66 OTHER and 12,66 FREE SPACE. But this afternoon I saw I had about 700 Mb free space. I don't know what happened today, but I can only see the PHOTOS on my Ipod, no music and no video's.
    Can't find the solution...
    Best regards,
    JJ

  • Duplicating itunes content on both of my computers

I was under the impression I could duplicate content on my Mac itunes to a work pc. I can't find how to do it. Can anyone provide some guidance. Thanks!

This is not as easy as expressed; For instance; PC's use letters to identify hard drives. Macs do not. When i try and transfer the itunes library to my PC running XP it shows up as unknown partition.
In my Imac, the disc shows in d=finder and all my data is present; What is the solution; Obviously it is not as easy as was expressed above.......

  • Possible to access your iTunes library from iPod with Homesharing ?

I have many movies in the library. Is it possible to access them from my iPod ( on the same network at home ) just using home sharing ?

Yes, although it depends a bit on how your library is organised. If everything is in the iTunes standard folders, libraries are in ...My Documents\My Music\iTunes and all the media in ...My Documents\My Music\iTunes Music then you can share the main iTunes folder over your network. Install iTunes on the laptop, then hold shift immediately after clicking on the iTunes shortcut to get the option to choose or create a new library. Navigate to your network share and open the iTunes Library.itl file. Don't try to access the library from two machines at the same time.

  • 2 computers with different iTunes content

Have successfully matched newer content (laptop) to the Cloud. Would like to merge some of the older albums but don't want to risk overwriting what's already there. What are my options?

    Using iPod with multiple computers
As to transferring your tracks from your iPod back to your computer, that's been covered here numerous times, so search for something like "ipod back to computer" and you'll find several threads with information.
Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Discussions page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic before you post a question.
    Regards.

  • Using another computer with iTunes to charge iPod

I have an 8gb 2nd gen ipod nano formatted for windows. Can I connect it to another windows computer and not have it automatically try to update and just charge it instead? Same goes for a mac? My music is on my desktop (PC) which is where I sync the ipod, but I also have a macbook and a sony laptop and I don't want my ipod to update with the music on the laptops. I just need to charge my ipod using the laptops.
    Thanks

You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys. On a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7.3 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
However the safest thing to do if you want to connect to multiple computers regularly is to change the update preference to "Manually manage music and videos":
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
    iPod 101: Fill 'er Up
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • Using and iPod with 2 different computers

As a new iPod user, I am looking for some help!
Currently, I use iTunes and my iPod with an external hard disc, where my entire library is stored, and my laptop. Now, I would like to use this hard disc with a second computer as well.
Should I move "iTunes Library.itl" and "iTunes Music Library.xml" from "C" (my laptop's hard disc) to my external hard disc, and then chose the manual synchronisation between iTunes and iPod?
Thanks in advance for the advice!!!

      Windows XP Pro

    Hello podwalker,
Should I move "iTunes Library.itl" and "iTunes
Music Library.xml" from "C" (my laptop's hard disc)
to my external hard disc, and then chose the manual
    synchronisation between iTunes and iPod?
Yes, I believe that would be the thing to do. Be sure
to set your manual syncronization for both
    computers.
If you connect your iPod to a new computer (that now
would have iTunes on it), however, it may display
"this iPod is connected to another computer, would
you like to replace the content?". Be sure to click
    on "NO", and not "yes".
    -Kylene
    Thanks iPodnano_1GB!
Does someone know if I have to create a folder "My music/iTunes" on my external disc and then copy "iTunes Library.itl" and "iTunes Music Library.xml" documents there? How can iTunes know that "iTunes Library.itl" and "iTunes Music Library.xml" are to be found at this new location?
Is there anything else I should know about this topic?
