ITunes corrupts ID3v2 tags in mp3

First - I couldn't find any form for a bug report on this site, so I'm using this forum. If it is wrong please feel free to redirect me to correct place.
Well, the story is the following: I've tried to add a directory with it's subdirectories containing mp3's to playlist, but iTunes found only 30% of all files! Okay, I have the winamp's .m3u list of the same directory and iTunes can import it(at least there's such menu item). After I've opened m3u in iTunes it showed all the songs with national(Russian) letters in their name as <-)-< e.g. it doesn't understand this characters(winamp's m3u list is stored in plaintext, not in the unicode). After I've tried to play some of these mp3's their names displayed right. Great, I've started to play all these mp3's with "bad" names to correct them. I've uploaded them to iPod and was happy. Till I've launched winamp again. It showed all the songs names as giberish! And notice, only song names, artist name and album remained the same. I've found that iTunes replaced all the names in ID3v2 tags with their unicode variant! Why??? I really don't understand this. And I didn't found any checkbox like "don't corrupt my id3 tags".
What I need now is to return my tags to their previos state. I think that iTunes developers should 1)fix this bug 2)write an utility to restore the tags (it is their fault that the tags were corrupted).
Thanks for reading.
Waiting for response from developers.

I should have been said that I'm using iTunes for windows.
And this link http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html leads to the "Request Music" page.
I know that "plaintext" is not an encoding(the real encoding of my m3u is win1251), I've just tried to say that winamp's playlist is not in unicode.
Okay, unicode is great. But why it converted only song's title, but not artist or album name?
I still would like to hear answers to my questions:
1. why iTunes skipped a lot of mp3's when I've tried to add a whole directory with it's subdirectories?
2. why it converts only song's name and not the reset?
3. will they publish some utility to recover id3 tags? (it is not hard to write such a programm)

  • ITunes 10.5.2.11 MP3 tag import not working correctly

    Hi,
I recently had a hard drive crash so I'm starting from a clean install of Windows XP SP3.
    Installed iTunes 10.5.2.11.
When importing MP3's into iTunes now sometimes iTunes reads the MP3 tags correctly.  Sometimes iTunes ignores the tags and inserts the file name into the artist field as shown in the image below.
The same MP3's worked perfectly with previous versions of iTunes...although they were all automatic updates of iTunes and not clean installs (if that might make a difference).  The same MP3 works fine with VLC or WMP with all the tagging correct.   Now it is roughly 50/50 whether they import correctly or not.  I've run the MP3's through MP3val and they come out clean.   I am confident the MP3 files are correctly tagged.
The MP3's were either ripped with iTunes or are bought through eMusic/iTunes.  Even with bought MP3's, with eMusic you couldn't be sure the producer would tag the files properly so I have put them through Musicbrainz tagger.
If I have imported an MP3 into iTunes and it has messed up the meta data, I have deleted the MP3s from iTunes, taken that MP3 into Musicbrainz, re-written the tags and then reimported the file.  Unless iTunes is restarted it still gives me the corrupted meta data.
However, as you can imagine, with several years worth of eMusic library and my CD collection worth of MP3's, it is a very tedious process to go through each album, retag everything, then restart iTunes and continue until it finds another set of tags it cannot import correctly.
Any ideas what is causing this as it only seems to have been an issue now with this version of iTunes from a clean install?

  • ID3V2 tags with iTunes

    Hello,
I have a podcast with mp3. I added ID3V2 tags to it. However, when I view the podcast on iTunes the ID3V2 information does not automatically populate. Is there anything I need to do to see that information?
    Thanks

    Hello,
If you mean the info button, I did click that. However, the comments that I made on the ID3V2 are not visible.

  • How do you force itunes comments to ID3 tags in MP3 files?

I have comments all throughout itunes. The mp3 files do not have those comments in the ID3 info.
How do you force itunes comments to write out to ID3 tags in MP3 files?
The folder and files all have write permission.

Yeah, don't do that, you probably also degrade the sound quality... If you've confirmed it is something odd with multiple tags try this.
Select a group of mp3 files (You might want to start with a smart playlist so you don't mess with any other format)
Right-click and use Convert ID3 Tags > None (may need to repeat this step if multiple tags)
Then right-click and use Convert ID3 Tags > v2.3 (v2.4 support still patchy from various accounts)
Downside is that it will lose any embedded artwork, but it should preserve all other meta-data, both tag-based and stored within the library itself.
In fact, if you use my CreateFolderArt script before and after updating the tags it should archive any artwork as a local Folder.jpg image for each album and then reinsert that image on the subsequent run... Check it out on a single album first. If it doesn't work as expected let me know and I'll tweak the script to achieve this end.

  • Itunes deleted id3 tags on my mp3s automatically

the "let itunes organize your music" box is unchecked, and i imported my cds as mp3s, as i removed the songs from the itunes library (not the files), it took off all the tags!!!! i spent hours importing cds, once i removed the songs from the library, then dragged the folder back into the itunes window, the tags to the album, track #, artist, etc weren't there anymore!!!!! just the file name. WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!!!! the program shouldn't have authority to mess with the id3 tags that are embedded into the mp3s once i remove the song from itunes!!! RIGHT?! what am i supposed to do with all the unlabeled mp3s!?!1 i'm not going to use iEatBrainz for everything, thats rediculous! could someone else try removing their songs from the itunes 6 version like the one i have here and see if they have the same problem?? its gotta be from the same folder where all your imported music goes....
this is making me soooo mad. i need an alternative program cuz this ain't working for me.

If you remove a song from the iTunes library the file will remain in the location that it was previously BUT the tune is removed from the library. The id3 tag was never changed. If you go back to the file in its' original location you can put it back into the iTunes library and all the id3 info is still there.
Usually it is best to let iTunes organize you library - unless you have a special reason not to let iTunes organize.
I removed tunes from my libary - keeping the files - then added them back and all was as it should be. If you are looking at the file via the finder the only info that you will see is the song title (the same info as in the "Name" column in iTunes). iTunes names the file on the HD the same as what is in the "Name" field.

  • Missing songs / won't add or import files / corrupt id3 tags?

    Hey Folks,
I can't seem to get some songs/files to add or import to itunes...
My computer crashed while itunes was open. When I rebooted the itunes library was corrupted and all playlists and songs were missing.
    ... no problem...
I'll just add the itunes folder right... Which is what I did.
Problem is now a good 20% of the songs are missing. They are on the harddrive in the itunes music folder, but won't import or add to itunes.
I suspect maybe it has something to do with corrupt ID3 tags?
Anyone know the answer to this mystery?
    Thx

    I assume adding artwork is a tag-affecting change - but I can't
add on this track - it just reverts to the black image.
I take it the tags themselves are hidden. I see no direct
editing options for them although I read than they can be
set to different types - and there are utilities available to
    clean, fix, re-set, etc.
Ok, now I see your edit - this isn't an mp3, it's .aiff.

  • ITunes failing to reconize existing MP3 files.

Ok this has happened to me more than once, but now it has gotten really sevre and to the point I'm just not willing to fix it the way I have in the past.
Before my iTunes library approx 1600songs; 128 albums, was working fine. Every single song, from every single album was in iTunes properly, and all the tags were correct as I've spent a while meticulously sorting them out. I take great pride in the cleanliness and organization of my library.
However now my iTunes wants to be a jerk to me and refuse to play certain albums, and sometimes 1 or 2 songs from an album while the rest will work. Where the album art used to be proudly displayed, there is now ugly text that just tells me "Album art unmodifiable" and will not play the song when double clicked, or the play button is pressed.
I figured it might just be some wierd problem, so I deleted the albums in question from the library and tried to re-add them by dragging and dropping them into the iTunes window; to no avail, as iTunes fails to reconize that I have added it at all.
I decided to re-install iTunes, and delete the iTunes library folder in My Music and try again. It still will not reconize these albums, and I have no idea why.
Before it's done this with maybe say one album at a time, which I can live with as I would just gain another copy of the album, either by downloading or ripping from CD to mp3. An answer telling me to rip directly to iTunes won't do, because some of the CD's I own are currently not in my posession, and exist solely on my harddrive at the moment. What I'm looking to do is re-add the existing files back into iTunes without re-ripping, or re-downloading, as the ones I have already on my computer have completely correct tags, aswell as album artwork.
So right now iTunes seems to hate me and it's decided to do this with upwards of 10 albums out of nowhere. All my songs have had thier ID3 tags updated to the newest version via iTunes so the artwork and tags edited in iTunes would be displayed on my player (archos, at the time I don't own an iPod but this may change as killed my archos during an "operation" to fix the battery)
So I've been reading stickies and other posts but none seem to directly provide an answer to my seemingly unique case of iTunes difficulty.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated as this has happened many times: too many to be considered funny.
I've read on the forum that burning to an audio CD and the using that to import into iTunes may work, HOWEVER so many full albums are doing this that it is not practical to burn so many CD's just to put them back onto my PC.
Is that an alternate solution where one does not have to use about 10-20 CDs?

Yeah, what stubchain said. If they play in WMP, then you've run into the bug where iTUnes can't read the MP3 tags.
iTunes has problems with v2.4 ID3 tags.
    http://www.id3.org/iTunes
iTunes also has a problem with v2.2 tags and artwork/beats per minutes tags on the same song.
Try setting them to v1 in another program and then see if iTunes can read them.
Then once iTnues can read tehm, I would convert them to v2.3 tags, which seem to be the most stable & have the best features.

  • Itunes refuses to import some mp3 files.

    Hi,
Can someone please advise. I have an album of MP3 tracks. For some reason Itunes refuses to import all but 2 of the songs on the ablum. I have the files on the hard drive in my music folder which should be auto sync to Itunes. This does not happen with these mp3's. Also if I try to do it manually nothing happens. Any suggestions?
P.s I am using the latest version of Itunes and the MP3's play fine with media player etc.

  • ID3v2 tags don't work properly on zen microph

I e-mailed tech support on this one, but it seemed like they spent 2 seconds reading it and then sending a template reply.
I have a lot of older mp3 files which I only used ID3V2 tags on, because that was the field with most info when right-clicking files in winamp.
When I try looking for a file which only has id3v2 tags, things don't work properly. Let's say I have this info in the id3v2 tag: "Mr.Artist - Mr. Track - Mr.Album".
Now let's turn the player on. Artists: "Mr.Artist" shows. When clicking on "Mr.Artist", "Mr.Album" shows. BUT, when clicking on the album, where the hell is "Mr. Track"? I only see blank space! I have to click "all tracks" and scroll my way to "mr. track" to find it.
This is a highly unneccesary hassle. I've updated the firmware, but that didn't do anything at all. I download a lot of unsigned, free music, which only has id3v2 information in it.
Id3v tags on the other hand, work just like they should.
Please help me out on this one. It would be greatly apreciated.Message Edited by Rognalf on 06-09-20070:57 AM

From my own experience it seems that ID3v2 tags seem to cause problems like this with most mp3 players. I'm guessing because it's newer. I've heard that ID3v2 is more flexible but ID3v is more compatible.

  • Nasty ID3V2 tag bug

This is for any of the Apple team. I discovered a pretty bad ID3V2 bug in iTunes for Windows, 6.0.4.2.
It has to do with the way the frame data length is encoded, or rather, in this case, not encoded. The result is that any tag data>127 bytes in length will likely break the entire tag.
The length of the data for a 2.4 version tag is the first 4 bytes after the ID field(TPE1, TIT1, etc). These bytes are syncsafe, meaning that the highest bit is always 0. So each byte actually encodes 7 bits. I had a frame that was 467 bytes in length. Its length was stored as "0x01d3". That equals 467. But it is supposed to be sync-safed, so it should actually be 0x0363. As a result, 0x01d3 actually decodes to only 211 bytes. When a tag parser jumps 211 to what should be the next tag, t'aint nothing there! So all subsequent frames are then lost.
This can get pretty nasty on Unicode tags which can then only store 64 characters before it breaks things.
iTunes and presumably the iPod and any other Apple supplied tools will probably read that data correctly as I am assuming they use a common library. But...it will break any third party tools. Not good.
    Mac Mini   Windows XP Pro

This is quite possibly the most annoying iTunes/iPod bug, and it's still kicking around in the latest iTunes version.
Note that all ID3v2 frames found in the tag prior to a frame with length greater than 127 bytes are read just fine. Once iTunes hits the syncsafe integer it gets lost.
ID3v2 frames can appear in the tag in any order. This means if you have a tag editor that lets you specify the order the frames appear in the ID3v2 tag and set it to put all frames which are "most likely" to be larger than 127 bytes (e.g. APIC, TIPL, TMCL), you can at least get iTunes/iPod to recognize a larger subset of the information. But granted, as you stated, that doesn't really help the unicode case.

  • ITunes Music File Tagging Not Working (Mac)

Hi, I tried updating my iTunes library. After updating, I restarted my iTunes. Then my artwork, mp3 tags are missing again.
Can anyone help me? I just encountered this error in iTunes Mac. I can update my music tags in Windows properly.
    Thanks!

Can someone help me, i dont want to start a new thread as i usre this could be a common problem.
Ok so when i launch the itunes store (windows) i can able to search manually in the field in the top right but i cant click on any of the links in the muic store homepage.
Its quite fustrating as I have to type in manually the name of the song or artist as oppose to browsing in the store.
Has anyone else experienced this? I tried to re install it but that didnt have any effect. PS This has only started happening within the last week or so. What could it be?

  • Can't tag my MP3 files

    Hello!
My problem is, that i can't tag my MP3 files in iTunes. Here's a screenshot in German, because I'm from Austria. But I'll translate if i you want to.

    PLEASE help me!
    Best regards, Mosa!

Make sure you have FULL control over the entire folder where that song is. It might even be a permissions problems on the folder(s) above it.
Also in Vista, it sometimes isn't enough to have read/write control. You need FULL control.

  • ITunes 11 Edited Tags Changing/Reverting

    Hello,
I have an iTunes collection that has been building since 2006. I divide my music into a few categories using the "grouping" tag. Often times when I edit the "grouping" tag I am overwriting either the label or a web address which had been previously added to that tag. I also use Mixed In Key software to analyze my music before adding the music to iTunes. Mixed In Key enters the key of the song into the "comments" tag and the BPM into the "BPM" tag.
I have been doing this for years and lately I have began to notice a problem. On some songs (most songs don't do this), when the song is played iTunes "refreshes" the tag and often times the "grouping" tag changes or reverts back to the info that was previously in the tag, such as the label or web address.
Further, sometimes the key that is written in the "comments" field will change to a long code of digits... something literally like 00007658935482748193.. Always beginning with several zeros.
Is there anything that I can do to have iTunes hard rewrite these fields so that they do not change by themselves?
    Thanks.

Yes, others are seeing this. Something in purchased media (I am pretty sure this has only happened with purchased media) is periodically checking back with the iTunes Store and resetting the tags in the iTunes library file but not in the actual media files (metadata are stored in both).  I haven't seen a truly systematic diagnosis of the issue (I use an old iTunes and have no iTunes account so I can't test anything myself).  There are temporary workarounds but tags will still revert after a time.
